Connecticut's innovation ecosystem is thriving. Leaders like Jessica Dodge, Managing Consultant at the Connecticut Office of Innovation are focused on supporting startups and small business initiatives throughout the state. HAYVN Hubcast host Nancy Sheed talked with Jess about how Connecticut fosters entrepreneurship, supports small businesses, and invests in the future of innovation. Building a Stronger Innovation Economy Jess emphasizes that the state leverages its vast resources, including higher education institutions, venture capital networks, and private-public partnerships, to create a dynamic business environment. "We continue to look for ways to de-risk the challenges that entrepreneurs face and create a support system that enables innovation," says Jess. The Power of Community and Collaboration One of the key themes was the importance of relationship-building in Connecticut's innovation space. The Office of Innovation serves as a bridge between entrepreneurs, investors, universities, and policymakers, ensuring that startups have the resources and mentorship they need to succeed. "Listening to entrepreneurs is at the core of what we do. Our role is to develop initiatives that are directly responsive to their needs," Jess explains. Connecticut's Strengths in Emerging Industries The state is making significant strides in advanced industries, including manufacturing, quantum computing, AI, and biotechnology. Connecticut's strong foundation including a highly educated workforce, cutting-edge research, and a supportive business environment makes it a prime location for companies looking to innovate. "Good ideas and good businesses don't fit a one-size-fits-all model. What we see time and again is that the right team and the ability to adapt are what drive long-term success," Jess notes. New Initiatives Supporting Entrepreneurs The Office of Innovation has launched two major programs: Partnerships Initiative – Connecting entrepreneurs with service providers and resources to help grow their businesses. Innovation Spotlight – Showcasing startups and innovative projects to amplify their impact. Connecticut's innovation ecosystem continues to evolve to meet the needs of business leaders and entrepreneurs.

Your Stories Don’t Define You, How You Tell Them Will

338 Potential Prospect Throughout our lives as we work towards our goals, whether that be in a company or in our own personal pursuits, we often need to reflect on whether or not what we are doing is in alignment with our values and what we want to do in the future. Then we take the steps to ensure that our actions are in alignment and working in tandem without desire for a better future. In this episode Sarah Elkins and Bryce Arii discuss the importance of self reflection, legacy, and staying in alignment with your values as you work towards your future. Highlights What legacy are you leaving behind? Finding what matters to you, your team, and keeping that in alignment. Use your words, people cannot read your mind.  Self reflect on the reasons you are doing things, is it in alignment.    Quotes “You know what matters to you, you know what matters to the business, and you know what matters to your team, and you're in perfect alignment.” “Well why do I want it? And that kicked off this whole series of self reflection, self transformation where it was really about ‘well I want to do that because of the unlimited potential of the people that I'd be leading', to go and do really transformative things.” “It really came down to Why am I doing this.”   Dear Listeners it is now your turn, I'm really curious where you will take the messages that you got from this conversation with Bryce Arii and me, and if you're a leader who are you missing their potential and why? Is it because you are only seeing them as one component of who they are and what they do, or are you seeing them from the past, an experience that you've had in the past that they've transformed since then and you might be missing something important for their impact in your organization. Are you that person? You can't expect someone like Bryce to swoop in and save the day and propel you to stardom, it doesn't work like that most of the time. So I'd really encourage you to share your competency and the why behind it through your stories, that will help people see you beyond what their direct experience has been so far And, as always, thank you for listening.    About Bryce Founder and Managing Consultant for Humagined, LLC, Bryce has been leading complex transformation programs focused on business process improvement. Bryce has a human forward approach that gets results. Be sure to check out his LinkedIn and Humagined! About Sarah "Uncovering the right stories for the right audiences so executives, leaders, public speakers, and job seekers can clearly and actively demonstrate their character, values, and vision." In my work with coaching clients, I guide people to improve their communication using storytelling as the foundation of our work together. What I've realized over years of coaching and podcasting is that the majority of people don't realize the impact of the stories they share - on their internal messages, and on the people they're sharing them with. My work with leaders and people who aspire to be leaders follows a similar path to the interviews on my podcast, uncovering pivotal moments in their lives and learning how to share them to connect more authentically with others, to make their presentations and speaking more engaging, to reveal patterns that have kept them stuck or moved them forward, and to improve their relationships at work and at home. The audiobook, Your Stories Don't Define You, How You Tell Them Will is now available! Included with your purchase are two bonus tracks, songs recorded by Sarah's band, Spare Change, in her living room in Montana. Topics covered include a) elements and attributes of resilient data centers, b) creating and maintaining a resilient and adaptive data center, and c) the different types of risks – geological, meteorological, and human – that must be considered when building and maintaining the data centers.Time Stamps00:02 -- Introduction00:49 -- Setting the Stage and Context for the Discussion01:54 -- Guest's Professional Highlights02:56 -- Overview of Data Center Resiliency05:41 -- Criticality of Data Centers 07:53 -- Key Elements of a Resilient Data Center12:06 -- Build Your Own or Co-locate15:00 -- Assessing the Effectiveness of a Data Center19:32 -- Significance of Simulated Exercises/Tabletop Exercises21:46 -- Importance of On-Site Visits23:56 -- Technical, Commercial and Operational Due Diligence26:17 -- Adaptive Design28:32 -- Data Center Facility Locations30:15 -- Best Practices & Final ThoughtsMemorable Spiros Liolis Quotes/Statements"Everything we do today, as professionals and as consumers, relies heavily on data centers.""There's a cloud of course, but nothing up there, 35,000 feet above the ground, is hosting servers. The cloud is practically data centers on Earth, right.""What do we mean by secure and resilient data centers? will refer to the ability of essential data center infrastructure to withstand and recover from disruptions and ensure their continued operations.""When we talk about potential threats, we need to think of them in terms of geological, meteorological, accidental, or even intentional risks. These are primarily the risk types we talk about when it comes to data center resiliency.""The moment you power up a data center, you practically cannot shut it down.""So the resiliency of a data center must consider how to build enough redundancy by design and by implementation into these data centers.""So our methodology is to look at the different risk factors that may have an impact on the facility itself, whether it is your own, or whether it is being hosted; you need to evaluate, and measure the impact of different risks and these are geological risks, meteorological risks and human risks, whether accidental or unintentional.""Nothing beats an on-site visit to check a data center's resiliency.""So the hybrid design is really all about building the necessary critical infrastructure that capitalizes on multiple sources of energy.""Education awareness is absolutely paramount. And that is probably one of our faults as well, data centers today are considered to be the naughty neighbors. I mean, they say, Oh, they're energy consuming, they take our water, they take our power; we as an industry need to educate our communities, we need to tell them what is it that we do. And of course, we need to make sure that we build them in a sustainable way, we'll use renewables, we will become community friendly. All of that must happen."Connect with Host Dr. Dave Chatterjee and Subscribe to the PodcastPlease subscribe to the podcast, so you don't miss any new episodes! He's had a wonderful career that seems to go on and on! [3:48] Check out the link and listen to the RIMS Risk Leaders series episode I did with Chris a few years back. Chris is also the President and Managing Consultant for Excellence in Risk Management, an LLC based in Tennessee. He's here today to discuss all things ERM. [4:11] Chris will lead two sessions at the RIMS ERM Conference 2023 in Denver, CO on November 2nd. In the morning, he will lead “The Value Proposition and Process for Operationalizing Risk Appetite Strategies and Frameworks.” [4:28] In the afternoon, Chris, with leaders from HUB International, will co-lead a 45-minute session titled, “Nerd-Out on Numbers: Why Analytics Are Key to Extraordinary ERM.” Chris will also be leading a RIMS CRMP Virtual Workshop on December 13th and 14th. He just can't quit risk management and we're all better for it! [4:55] Justin welcomes Chris Mandel to RIMScast. Chris was RIMS President in 2002–2003. Chris spent the first half of his career in traditional risk management in large corporations. In the first part of this century, Chris was asked to create an ERM strategy and ultimately became Chief Risk Officer for USAA in San Antonio, for 10 years. [6:02] That was where Chris's career became more progressive. Chris was on the RIMS board for seven years, was Risk Manager of the Year in 2004, and received the Goodell Award in 2016 for lifetime achievement. He has retired twice but he can't seem to stop. He has a consulting firm specializing in ERM. [6:27] Chris spent eight years doing strategic work for Sedgwick. He is on the faculty at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, where he teaches ERM. ERM is a key aspect of his skillset. The risk discipline is advancing and maturing, so there's never a dull moment. [7:41] The risk management profession has changed since 2002. In 2002, risk managers were focused on insurable risk. The Enron debacle raised the question of whether risk was being managed effectively in a lot of companies. Risk management became an explorative discipline of embracing risk and exploring the ERM version of the discipline. [8:53] Chris calls the years since 2002 a time of expanding, exploring, and innovation until now when we are executing on things that were more conceptual in the past, employing progressive tactics and strategies to manage an ever-expanding landscape of risk for organizations that are increasingly being challenged by risks. [9:29] ERM is constantly maturing. RIMS has published its second ERM maturity model. It's recognition of getting to a level of maturity where we might accomplish some other objectives that might push this more from a discipline into a profession. Risk professionals need recognition in their organizations so they can influence decisions. [10:17] Organizations are discovering the need for robust ERM and how it adds value in risktech and insuretech. If you ignore rare risks, and they blow up in your face, you get asked, “How did you miss that?” ERM is coalescing into an issue for serious practitioners who want to rise in the ranks to be more influential in their organizations. [12:30] There are still detractors who believe all you need to worry about is how you insure the organization. They believe that as long as nothing uninsured blows up in their faces. Then they believe in ERM. [12:45] Chris will present “The Value Proposition and Process for Operationalizing Risk Appetite Strategies and Frameworks” at RIMS ERM Conference 2023. Chris just co-authored a paper on risk appetite in financial institutions that is being considered for publication in a journal of risk management for banking. [14:16] The presentation is to convince the audience that even if you're not in financial services, there's good reason why you want to manage risk to risk appetite. That's a simple way to state what can be a very complicated approach and process. How can you manage risk if you don't know how much risk you're able to take or need to take? [15:14] Chris will be presenting with Barry Franklin, former CRO for Zurich North America who is an actuary. [15:31] In the afternoon, Chris, with leaders from HUB International, will co-lead a 45-minute session titled, “Nerd-Out on Numbers: Why Analytics Are Key to Extraordinary ERM.” Jeff Guttman and Chrystina Howard from HUB International, Client Analytics and ERM, had asked Chris to join them on this presentation. [15:53] The session focuses on the evolution from total cost of risk (TCOR) to applying concepts and tools that get risk quantification done in a more robust way and move beyond just those things that are insurable. A lot of people are still skeptical about that. That's one reason risk appetite frameworks and strategies are not always adopted. [16:28] There will be some compelling arguments presented about some ways in which risk can be quantified that people may never have been exposed to. If you thought strategic risk was unquantifiable, you're wrong. Strategic risk has been shown to be the most destructive kind of risk, over financial, operational, legal, and compliance risks. [17:16] These two sessions dovetail nicely for Chris. They are hot topics for him, what he teaches at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, and what he practices in his consulting. [17:32] RIMS plug time! Sponsor an episode of RIMScast! Contact us at pd@rims.org. Webinar registration is complimentary for RIMS members. [20:38] Even in college, Chris was deathly afraid of public speaking. For the last 15 or 20 years, it seems all he has done is talk to audiences. As RIMS President, he talked to conference audiences in the thousands. He traveled the world talking to chapters and regional conferences. It's almost 2nd nature to him now. It's what he loves doing. [22:05] Chris brings that same feeling to a RIMS ERM 45-minute session on numbers as well as to an address. He makes it concise and engaging. He plans it as a conversation with the audience, including questions. [23:46] Chris will be leading a RIMS-CRMP Virtual Workshop on December 13th and 14th. Chris was in the first 200 to take the RIMS-CRMP as soon as he qualified for it. He felt he needed it if he was going to keep speaking on risk. There were no preparatory materials at the time but he passed. Now there are the Virtual Workshops to help you. [24:55] Chris tells us how to be better prepared for the RIMS-CRMP examination. It's a reflection of experience and knowledge that goes way beyond the surface. It's designed to cause people to think. People need to properly prepare for it to get through it. CRMP reflects, more than anything, the advancement of the discipline closer to a profession. [26:24] You can't memorize the CRMP test. The test changes every time around. You're learning core concepts in the workshop. The RIMS-CRMP is about what you've put into practice over the years; it's an attempt to measure the depth of your experience, knowledge, and skills. [26:44] Chris uses interaction in his presentation of the RIMS-CRMP Virtual Workshop. It's a combination of lecture and group exercises that keep people engaged throughout. Chris teaches it at the university or master's level. [27:40] Chris created an ERM LinkedIn group in 2004 or 2005. See the link in the show notes. It has around 51,000 members from around the world. Chris blocks people who try to sell things or present topics that do not relate to risk management. Justin is going to post a link to this episode on the group. Any ERM enthusiast can learn from Chris. [31:03] Chris Mandel will be at the RIMS ERM Conference 2023 in Denver, Colorado on November 2nd. The first session he's going to do is 60 minutes, called “The Value Proposition and Process for Operationalizing Risk Appetite Strategies and Frameworks.” [31:19] In the afternoon, Chris, with leaders from HUB International, will co-lead a  45-minute session titled, “Nerd-Out on Numbers: Why Analytics Are Key to Extraordinary ERM.” [31:26] Chris has always been supportive of Justin's work at RIMS. Justin thanks Chris for joining RIMScast. [31:41] Special thanks to former RIMS President, Chris Mandel for joining us on RIMScast. Matthew Pines is a Managing Consultant at the Krebs Stamos Group and a Fellow at the Bitcoin Policy Institute specializing in national security. In this interview, we discuss the rapidly changing geopolitical order as China competes with the US for dominance, and how Bitcoin may become one of a number of alternative global reserve assets to US debt. - - - - There are moments when the world pivots when events change the course of world affairs. The Russian invasion of Ukraine was one such event. More to the point, it was the western sanctions imposed on Russia that will come to be seen as a paradigm shift. It was when the world went from working in an open Eurodollar system to a closed system involving alternative forms of money. In the face of increasingly fraught geopolitics and a loss of faith in the US dollar, certain countries are seeking to diversify the reserve assets they hold. This will create problems for the USD-UST system, at the same time the US is facing significant headwinds: dealing with huge structural debt, ‘reshoring, restocking and rewiring', and countering China's rise. What was once a theory is now turning into reality: China is on the cusp of being able to compete with the US, principally within the Asian geopolitical sphere. To this end, China has a strategic imperative to secure reliable commodity and energy sources, and will likely move towards a proto-petroyuan system, and coerce other countries and entities to follow. In this context, Bitcoin is emerging as a viable alternative to fiat currencies and gold as a global reserve asset. It is a unique form of money: a digital commodity with global fungibility, limited counterparty risk, and large liquidity. But critically it is a politically neutral asset, an increasingly attractive attribute for countries seeking to hedge their exposure to increasing geopolitical risk. In the US, the rise of Bitcoin companies, along with the Biden administration's Executive Order on Digital Assets and positive statements by officials, suggests the US could accept Bitcoin's gradual adoption and monetization. From a national security perspective, key decision-makers may realize that allowing Bitcoin to serve as a new global reserve would disproportionately benefit the US.
