We are over the moon to bring you the latest episode of our electrifying podcast, where we have the privilege of having none other than the brilliant Amy Simpkins on board!
In this episode, Laura and Amy discuss the energy storage and microgrid landscape, with a peek behind the curtain as Amy Simpkins finally answers her own questions as CEO of muGrid Analytics and microgrid architect.Fresh from the RE+ 2023 conference, Amy and Laura explore the gap between the marketing around battery systems as solved science versus how much more research is truly necessary. Amy explains why 15 years of industry experience led to muGrid's transition from strictly energy consultants to software vendors, tackling the current chasm between actual economic results delivered and how much more is possible, as well as why the financials are vital.According to Amy, “The intelligent economic decisions are critical for any kind of battery technology and that is something that gets lost.”Quotes - all by Amy Simpkins“The entire value proposition of an energy storage system is in its control, in its decision making piece.” "No matter which element on the periodic table you are using, you still have to intelligently command the battery to work and make intelligent decisions that will deliver financial results from your battery.” "In order to actually deploy energy storage and associated hybrid systems, they have to generate revenue."“We've made the transition from consultants who said what could be possible to a product vendor who says we can DO this. It's not just probable, it's possible, and we're doing it.”AboutAs co-founder and CEO at muGrid Analytics, Amy Simpkins solves wicked problems at the intersection of energy technology and economics using math and modeling. muGrid provides bankable techno-economic analysis, optimized control, and project development of renewable energy, energy storage, and microgrids to maximize economic return, increase energy resilience, and promote energy equity in the US and around the world. Amy is also an internationally recognized speaker on innovation and iterative development for entrepreneurs. She is the author of Spiral: A Catalyst for Innovation and Expansion and host of the Power Flow Podcast, which amplifies diverse voices in the energy revolution. In today's episode, Laura welcomes author, podcast host, co-founder, and CEO at muGrid Analytics, Amy Simpkins. Amy solves problems at the intersection of energy, technology, and economics using math and modeling. The clean energy industry is booming and changing the way we have thought about energy over the past 100 years. There is a disruption to the stability that we have relied on, due to the nature of innovation and the changes that come with it. Around this, there is a common theme of “both, and” and the balance that is necessary in order for them to work hand in hand. Innovation is for everyone; innovation is an inherently human process. Through that process of innovation, there is a leap between theory and practice - and the leap is a chasm. Tune into this episode to learn about the types of innovation, who can be an innovator (and how to do it), recognizing the need for, and knowing when to innovate, and the need for diversity, equity, and inclusion in leadership to have a boundary-breaking webbed perspective. Laura's first book – Values First. How Knowing Your Core Beliefs Can Get You the Life and Career You Want – is now available! Grab your copy today! But what we're bad at culturally is taking responsibility for our neighbors and our communities prior to the crisis.” – Amy Simpkins“Disaster is a great leveler and a great teacher.” – Jennifer Gray Thompson“There is a way forward and I believe clean energy is at the center of that.” – Jennifer Gray ThompsonIf you enjoyed the conversation, please share the episode with other innovators. It's when we all decide that we have a common purpose, a common ground, and we're going to work on this together.” -Cynthia Murray Episode Description: As we watch global events unfold, we realize that there will be more climate-related disasters in the coming years. The devastating truth is that we will never be able to stop natural disasters from happening, but there is something we can do to build our homes and communities with more tolerance to disasters. As the world becomes more and more tech-savvy and able to innovate for more sustainable answers, we now have the capabilities to not just recover from disasters, but to help prevent them, strengthen our resilience, and rebuild better. And in this regard, a focus on securing a more sustainable source of energy, communication, and delivering information is vital. And the trouble is, we can no longer say that.”“I think we need to have more spaces that are devoted to free exchange of ideas without fear of competition.”“The economic market is what's going to drive the widespread change.” “Stability and efficiency at the cost of the planet is not acceptable.”“We need to be able to take baby steps back from oversimplification, stovepiping, and this unwavering commitment to stability at any cost.”“We are all interacting with the system. Whether you work in the industry or not, you live in it.”Resources:Connect with Amy on LinkedIn.Check out muGrid's website.Connect with muGrid Analytics on LinkedIn, Facebook, or Twitter. If you enjoyed the conversation, please share the episode with other innovators. Today's guest is Amy Simpkins, CEO of Mu Grid. We talk about her life as a clean energy consultant, her history in astronautics and her new podcast, Energy Flow. Growing up in a culture of theater, music and performance, Amy has deep love for words and a connection to story. But she spent years taming the right brain and training the left as an engineer, studying aeronautics and astronautics at MIT, interning with NASA and working for the Space Systems Division of Lockhead Martin. Amy still has a pending application to be an astronaut. But in the meantime, she has stepped away from building systems for space shuttles and has turned her focus to Resilient Microgrids. After all, what is a spacecraft, but a microgrid in the sky? Together with her husband, electrical engineer Dr. Travis Simpkins (see episode 56), they have formed a consulting company dedicated to helping establish grid-tied microsystems that can withstand grid failure. Governments, schools, grocery stores, hospitals, everyone needs to move into sustainable energy consumption that can handle the wild ride of climate change. Mu Grid helps clients tackle unpredictability (see the definition of stochastic*) with data and better modeling. But, you know me, I like to ask personal questions. You'll hear what it's to manage a highly technical consulting firm with her husband while also traveling the world and homeschooling three small children. In a pandemic. How their family is growing and adjusting. And why she launched Energy Flow, a podcast dedicated to elevating diverse voices in the new energy economy. Pass the microphone. *Stochastic - randomly determined; having a random probability distribution or pattern that may be analyzed statistically but may not be predicted precisely. In this episode, Power Flow host Amy Simpkins shares her vision for the podcast and the importance of collaboration in innovation. Featuring conversations with energy experts, Power Flow showcases all things energy: the new energy economy, the all-electric future, sustainability, resilience, and equity.Learn how microgrid project development is similar to spacecraft acquisition. Also: sustainability, community resilience, the new energy economy, all-electric future, and moving from centralized to distributed architectures.Amy's objective is to start conversations that dream a new dream in the context of collaboration, understanding that no one person has all the answers to the energy crises that are facing our world right now. Using the power of collaboration to save the planet together, we can tap many people's zones of genius and learn about the exciting solutions all around us.Quotables “The way that we innovate, the way we move forward is not just diversity for the sake of diversity, but it's a diversity of conversation and experience, bringing the vast experience and knowledge and inspiration from all different kinds of people together. Those are the keys to changing the world.” “I believe that the most potent form of innovation is collaborative, where you get multiple minds to the whiteboard to solve problems together. We need to have conversations with people who don't think like us.” This Week's GuestAmy Simpkins is Co-Founder, Host, and Chief Architect of the Power Flow Podcast. “A fundamental principle of innovation is that if you want more diversity of ideas and possibilities, you need to have more diverse brains in the room. That's not a diminishment of anyone. In fact, that's an elevation of everyone.” -Amy Simpkins Episode Description: Electricity is probably one of the most significant achievements of all time. The biggest industries down to individual residences all rely upon electricity for almost everything. But what if power grids suddenly fail? With the traditional grids getting outdated and less inefficient, this is likely to happen IF interventions keep being delayed. About ⅓ of energy is delivered to end-users; the greater fraction goes to waste. Moreover, outdated traditional grids continue to pose security, safety, and equity issues. How? In this episode, Jennifer sits with MuGrid Analytics CEO, Amy Simpkins to uncover this overlooked problem we have today. Jennifer and Amy talk about the advantages of shifting from large centralized power plants that we use today to localized, distributed energy using microgrids. Learn how communities can maximize resiliency, advocate for energy equity, and ensure safety and security. The world needs a new way to define sustainability and renewable energy. Tune in and discover effective ways to pattern resilience metrics as Amy shares how to solve wicked problems with math and modeling! The energy revolution is coming, and it's all hands on deck. Amplifying the expertise of the leaders in the new energy economy and inviting diverse voices to the table, we'll talk solar power, battery storage and battery alternatives, microgrids, renewable energy, distributed energy architectures, energy policy, energy equity, and all things energy.I'm your host, Amy Simpkins, renewable energy CEO (and Rocket Scientist) and I am passionate about creating sustainable change. I believe that access to electricity is no longer a luxury -- it's a human right. I'm driven by the desire to leave this world better than I found it. I believe in the power of collaboration -- that innovation doesn't happen in a vacuum. And innovation is the only way humanity will survive. Recent natural disaster events impacting access to power, like the Texas Power Crisis during the winter storms of 2021 or the raging California wildfires of 2018-2020, combined with concern over anticipated future events, like a Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake in Oregon, have elevated conversations about resilience, independence, and sustainability to new, more urgent heights. If we are truly going to meet the challenges to the energy revolution and to achieve these ideals, we need to bring all minds to the whiteboard. That's why Power Flow Podcast was born. I've always worked in male-dominated environments. Yet, the more I engage with women, the more I witness very different approaches to innovation, problem solving, and solution implementation. We possess a treasure trove in untapped riches of expertise from female, non-binary, and BIPOC professionals, all relentlessly working to make this new energy future a reality, yet too often unseen and unheard. Solving the challenges we face in the energy industry can solve intersectional problems for Earth and its residents. A shift from fossil fuels to renewables not only increases sustainability -- an important component of slowing and reversing climate change -- it will also reduce pollution near low-income or racially diverse neighborhoods. A shift to distributed energy improves community resilience through microgrids and minigrids. Community resilience and distributed energy lead to energy equity - ensuring access to clean, reliable energy for all. Join me in a deep dive exploring the solutions clean energy can offer to our earth as we bring more voices to the microphone and more minds to the whiteboard, shining a spotlight on new ideas and perspectives, tapping into the vast expertise and intersectional thinking that's already here. “Marketing strategy is what you want to say for the next 20 days and branding strategy is what you want to say for the next 20 years.” – Laura Bull Today's featured bestselling author is branding boss and family gal, Laura Bull. Laura and I talk about her new book, branding, and tons more!! Key Takeaways: Marketing can be fun if you are being creative with it. Long and prosperous careers happen when you are hands-on with your marketing. Branding is consistent. Influencer branding involves knowing your target audience and how they need to hear your message. Marketing strategy is dependent on your brand. So know your brand first. Core values should remain but not certain marketing strategies. Try new things. The “It factor” is about having to be confident and focused on your brand. Trust is a two-way street when it comes to influencing others. Relevance and creativity go together. Your brand must be genuine to the audience you plan to serve. PIN = Product. Image. Narrative. Being able to live and have truly memorable experiences is a gift. “It's one thing to know the gift, it's another thing to nurture the gift.” – Dr. Ray Charles Today's featured bestselling author is keynote speaker, risk management specialist, certified spiritual coach, and fellow podcast host, Dr. Ray Charles. Dr. Ray and I talk about being proactive, how he serves leaders, and tons more!!! Key Takeaways: Every go-to person needs a go-to person in their time of need. Getting certifications and formal training is always helpful, but often the information you need is online. Amanda says she will, "for three days put my head into my computer and learn what I need to know". And I think it's important to remember that learning this way can help you to just start and get going. We tend to use a need to learn as a way to procrastinate and if you have an inclination towards that, then maybe it's time to jump in. One thing that digital nomads sometimes forget to consider is time zones. When your clients are in the US, but you're in South East Asia that may mean you need to stay up until midnight or later to take calls. Can you keep up with that schedule, do you want to? Currently, I'm in Ecuador, so I'm on the same time as New York or Miami, but when I'm in Eastern Europe, the difference can be more like seven to eight hours ahead. And when you're moving frequently or some countries have daylight savings time and some don't... it gets complicated. One of the things I love about Amanda's story, and is also true for Amy Simpkins, if you listened to her episode, big companies target other big companies and charge high rates. Can you target small to mid-range companies and find a pricing structure that works for you and them both? Filling that market gap can mean big business for you. Amy is the CEO of the renewable energy startup muGrid Analytics. Her company solves problems at the edge of energy technology and economics using math and modeling, and is dedicated to creating a sustainable energy future for the planet, one project at a time. As a young, female executive in the tech world, she puts her theories about disruptive innovation and bringing your whole self to work into practice every single day. In this episode Amy shares her experience as a renewable energy expert and its impact on the energy industry in general.
The US Department of Energy had a program called the Solar in Your Community Challenge, which allowed Amy and her husband to make contacts and gain contracts all while helping lower income communities. Occasionally, we hear from Compass guests that they found a government program that in one way or another helped them get their feet under them. I think we don't hear it more often because these programs aren't well advertised and we don't think to look. Taking time to run a couple of searches might get your business on firm footing that much sooner. We often talk about scaling on Compass and it's a very individual decision. Coaching, consulting, and service work tend to be on the trading time for money end of the spectrum. Downloads, courses, and books are on the recurring revenue end, and they all are types of intellectual property. Additionally, you can develop systems and models to sell to other businesses, depending on what you do. It may be time to take another look at what you do and what other revenue streams are available. Amy consults and is still keeping an eye on whether they want to look at selling their proprietary models later on. It's rare that you get to see the effect your work has on the world at large. I occasionally hear from listeners about how the show has made a difference in their lives. When you manage a company's social media account you can see how it's helping grow their business. Amy gets to see how their work sets up individual companies to shift their energy footprints and it's overall effect in the grand scheme. For full links and show notes, visit compasspod.com/032
There are seasons to each year. We know this. Fall, winter, spring, summer...and we all know what each of those seasons bring, right? But, did you know that there are seasons of life too? In today's episode, we've got Amy Simpkins on the podcast. Amy is a former aeronautical engineer. She jokes that her mom would call her a former rocket scientist and she's not wrong. She was living the dream in her field, but got the itch to challenge herself and try something new and completely different. Since her rocket scientist days, she has two new businesses - a renewable energy company and a coaching business helping entrepreneurs tap into their inner innovator. On today's podcast, she talks about identity, how it can ebb, flow and shift throughout the stages of your life and how the iterative processes engineers use actually apply to our lives and our growth as well! It's a fascinating new perspective that I have been applying to my life constantly since I was exposed to this idea and I'm so pumped to share it with you! What a joy and honor it was to hold space for reflective conversation with two change-making women who have an epic friendship that has spanned more than three decades, Pamela Slim and Desiree Lynn Adaway. The two met on a hill in Northern California on the first day of college at the age of 18 and have been best friends ever since. From completely different lived experiences, Desiree is a black woman from the south side of Chicago, and Pamela a white woman from Marin in the San Francisco Bay Area, they unite around common interests and connections that transcend while never forgetting their differences. While you’re at it, you’ll notice how your perspective and view of the world around you will change. Another challenge... when you are in any situation, school, work, office, ask yourself “who is here?”, “who’s not here?”, and “why aren’t they here?”. Many said “yes” alongside me and The Women Podcasters in Solidarity Initiative was born. First season episodes, with a focus on anti-racism and police brutality, are up at www.womenpodcastersinsolidarity.com, and episodes I recorded for our second season, on the intersectional impact of gun violence, are assembled on the latest Mother’s Quest Blog. I’m excited to share this episode of the Mother’s Quest Podcast with someone I deeply admire and whose recent book “Spiral: A Catalyst for Innovation and Expansion” was a revelation to me... speaker, author, thought leader, homeschooling mother, and CEO of the renewable energy start-up muGrid Analytics, Amy Simpkins. Before a self-described identity crisis brought her to the work she’s doing today, Amy was quite literally on the path to becoming an astronaut. After pursuing a degree in Aeronautics and Astronautics from MIT and a masters in Astronautical Engineering from USC, she began a 10-year tenure as an aspiring Spacecraft Systems Architect designing, integrating, and operating spacecraft at Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company. How she determined she no longer wanted to become an astronaut and the power of being truly seen by someone else, which led to her becoming a coach, are just a few of the topics we explore during our conversation. I first came to know Amy when I was facilitating a virtual “Power Circle” for the organization Emerging Women and Amy was a participant. Right away, I knew she was someone special, as she brought the insight of an engineer’s brain, a poet’s heart, and an alchemist’s life journey to every session. Using her unique gifts, Amy lights the way for so many of us with how she explains and embodies the iterative spiral path to life, motherhood, and entrepreneurship. And in this conversation, as we explored her wisdom and lessons learned along all the E.P.I.C. guideposts, it felt like we revealed together the creative genius, a quality she most admired in her mother, that is also inside of her. I left feeling more at ease than when I arrived, noticing the places and ways that I can bring more integration and awareness about the spiral processes in my life, and committed to making space, as Amy challenged me to do, to put down my phone, and sit in the pause and exploration of a question in my life, rather than rushing to a solution. I invite you to do the same right now...to push pause, really listen to this conversation, and create space for integration, curiosity, iteration, and creativity in your E.P.I.C. life. Much appreciation, P.S. Know someone who would love this conversation? Click forward now to pay this forward to a friend who may be interested. Think like an Engineer with Amy Simpkins
It is safe to say that all electricity customers want reliable and resilient power service. One way that some end-users are ensuring they get it is by investing in distributed energy resources and building microgrids. But rather than simply using these systems as emergency backups, more and more owners are finding ways to capture economic benefits from them. Distributed energy resources can help shave peak loads, shift time-of-use, and support ancillary services, which all provide value to owners. Nonetheless, utilities generally set the rules; they establish the rate tariffs. As such, utilities have the ability to alter how the game is played. According to Amy Simpkins, CEO of muGrid, there are a number of ways that utilities can influence how large commercial and industrial customers behave simply by modifying the rules. Simpkins will give a presentation at the Distributed Energy Conference in Golden, Colorado, October 15–17, 2018, during which she will offer a few case studies and show some sensitivity analysis. What would happen if demand charges were increased? What if the look-back period was modified? What if time-of-use rates were shuffled? Simpkins' presentation—“How to Incentivize Your Utility Customers to Do What You Want”—will focus on the “knobs utilities can turn” to sway customer behavior. Attendees may find that power companies have more control than they realize over what customers choose to do in the end. Furthermore, the solution can be win-win.

Amy’s story blew me away because she had a dream and she made it happen, going through years of education and training to become an aerospace engineer. And then she realized that her dream had shifted into something new and she answered that call. If you are contemplating a big change in your life, I think you just might be inspired by Amy’s story. Our conversation touched on her philosophy in her business, family and what can happen when you really listen to yourself. Background music provided by Pond5
Amy Simpkins shares with us what it took for her to leave her 20 year career as a rocket scientist to become a lifestyle design strategist. Amy shares how she had lost her passion, her inspiration, and her drive to continue toward the goals of her childhood and any desire to "climb the corporate ladder." Instead she found that she wanted new goals: flexibility to travel, time with her kids, and most of all, the opportunity to have a more powerful, personal impact on the world. This realization rocked her. She began to question everything, down to who she really was at her core. For so long she had identified "who I am" with "what I have done or will do," especially when it came to her career, that she realized she didn't really know that much about herself anymore. And so began a year long (and beyond!) exploration of herself as a human BEing, not a human DOing. An exploration of who she is RIGHT NOW, as an adult, with wonderful and unique experiences behind her and new passions and interests in front of her. Biggest Learning: You have those urges for a reason. Pay Attention. It can be done, You can do it! Favourite Quote: If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them. Henry David Thoreau Theme Song: Erin Shore (instrumental) - The Corrs Superhero Name: The Phoenix About Amy: Amy Simpkins is a former rocket scientist who spent 10 years in the corporate world designing and flying spacecraft. Since hearing The Call, she is now a Lifestyle design strategist, coach, and founder of Life Architecting. Her new mission is to help mid-career professionals bust the myth of work/life balance, rediscover what they need to truly THRIVE, and to design and build impactful, resilient, beautiful lives from the raw material of that deep self-knowledge, exploration, and grace. My coaching practice is called Life Architecting because I believe we all have the power to architect lives that are impactful, resilient, and beautiful. Architecture brings together art and science, form and function, beauty and structure, yin and yang. As architects, we must carry the vision for our lives and we must also determine how best to execute that vision within the boundaries of reality. Boundaries don't have to be roadblocks, they can be points of leverage from which to build magnificence. Connect With Amy: Facebook Twitter Google+ Interview Links: Amy's Website Work with Amy
