This week, Adam was joined in the writer's studio by Marie Darrieussecq, whose latest book Sleepless (translated by Penny Hueston and published by Fitzcarraldo) is one writer's attempt to describe, understand, and perhaps overcome her insomnia. The passages in Sleepless that take us into the mind of the insomniac are somewhat like the experience of insomnia itself— at times fragmented and hynopgogic, at others dazzlingly alert and perceptive—while those that investigate the potential cures are captivating in their detail, description and weirdness. For those whose lives have never been blighted by insomnia, Sleepless will be a fascinating insight into this strangest and most psychologically traumatic of conditions, while those who have suffered it will find in these pages solidarity and solace.Buy Sleepless: https://www.shakespeareandcompany.com/books/sleepless-5Marie Darrieussecq was born in Bayonne in 1969 and is recognized as one of the leading voices of contemporary French literature. (Riverton, WY) - Fremont County Fair 2023 is in the review mirror but amidst the anticipation and preparations with the fair a certain young participant named Devyn found herself facing an unexpected turn of events. Devyn was not able to sell her pig "Little Chunkers" this year. This would have been the pinnacle of her dedicated efforts that she has put in with her pig. The situation has led her to seek a helping hand in a venture that embodies the culmination of her hard work and dedication. I actually met Devyn before fair and she was especially excited to show off her prize pig. Can we help this young lady out? In this interview I ask Devyn a bit more about herself, she is 12 years old going into 7th grade. We find out about her love of animals and find out about this delicious pig that needs a freezer home! This young lady needs our help. Devyn gives us the dirty on the pigs, they are actually really sweet animals, that she works hard with and enjoys spending time with. Another part of showing and selling your animal at the fair is the "add-ons" which are just small donations people give to help out the kids. If you would like to make a donation or potentially buy Lil' Chunkers then call or text 307-851-1485 which is Cathy Fillin, Devyn's mother. Generous donations have become the cornerstone of uplifting 4-H kids like Devyn, enabling them to transform setbacks into success stories. Through community support, these donations pave the way for brighter futures, empowering young hearts and ambitions to flourish. Again that number to talk to Cathy or inquire about buying the pig to help Devyn is 307-851-1485.
Proposals, printed lyrics, and promised lands: the pigs recount their respective trips to the circus (literal: Maximus, metaphorical: BST Hyde Park's tiered standing) to watch the Boss this summer, in an episode that arguably hits a bit harder than last week's game of “guess the Really Hot Chili Peppers setlist”. Dedicated to our friends around the river bend, and all those remembering them. Look at that title and tell me these boys aren't serious. The purge steps up this week as Alex and Ivo discuss Live Aspects but also Non Live Aspects of their hoariest mid noughties chestnuts: one more chance to rank the Chamber Bullets' non album singles, whether the Great Scots could have had it so much better with a bit more emotional weight, a largely revelation free black hole of chat on the Cydonian Knights, and why the Really Hot Chili Peppers can't turn on their telly. Shortly after the birth of her first child in 2001 French writer Marie Darrieussecq developed insomnia, and she's not been able to get a good night's sleep since. She's spent some of her many waking hours writing a memoir dedicated to insomnia. Sleepless combines meditations from a list of revered writers (such as Virginia Woolf and Marcel Proust) with Marie's research and personal experiences. Darrieussecq is one of the leading voices in contemporary French literature. Her first novel, Pig Tales, was translated into thirty-five languages and she was awarded the Prix Médicis and the Prix des Prix in 2013.
The podcast may be in flux between seasons, but this shouldn't stop us getting our talons into one of the jewels (exact jewel ranking TBC) in the “UK festivals that you can camp at” crown. Arguably not the most total review of the sumptuous Suffolk smorgasbord, compromised by admin and rain and cold Saturday night pragmatism, but with enough regrets and soup-based hypotheticals to tide us over until Alex goes to Green Man and Ivo berates him about what he did and didn't see there. This month World Book Club visits Paris, France to be guests of the iconic bookshop on the Left Bank of the River Seine, Shakespeare & Co. There Harriett Gilbert and a bookshop audience talk to acclaimed French writer Marie Darrieussecq about her extraordinary novel Pig Tales. Pig Tales is the story of a young woman who works at a shady Parisian massage parlour, becoming a favourite with her lustful clients until, that is, she slowly and alarmingly metamorphoses into a pig. A dark feminist fable of political and sexual corruption, and a grim warning of what can happen in a society without a soul, Pig Tales scandalised its readers when it first came out and became the most popular first novel published in decades. He is currently drafting his second book, about his travels to find the historical sites and mysterious personalities associated with South Africa's now infamous Cattle Killing 1856-1857. Guest: Treive Nicholas, to discuss his recent work, 'A Nun and the Pig: Tales from South Africa'. In 1980, while Nelson Mandela languished in jail, an enthusiastic and hopelessly naïve British teenager arrived at a local school in Mandela's home state of Transkei. Wide-eyed and faced with an unfamiliar world, Treive Nicholas was about to embark on an adventure he would never forget. Looking back on this year forty years later, A Nun and the Pig offers a remarkable insight into this politically charged but little-known part of Africa and a lived experience ranging from the surreal to the heart-warming; the wonderful to the tragic. One minute Nicholas could be entertaining local Thembu chiefs or coaching the Transkei paraplegic sports team for a rare non-racial sporting competition, the next he could be witnessing the terrible death of an infant in a neglected Umtata township. Scrapes with law enforcement agencies increased in frequency and risk as Nicholas railed against the injustices of the apartheid system, and at one point found himself smuggling Communist black liberation literature across South Africa's borders. Armed only with a camera and bag of dried apricots, his hitchhiking adventures took him thousands of kilometres north to Zambian bush, where events took a dangerous turn near one of Robert Mugabe's camps. Fear, shock, joy and self-discovery were a daily experience in this forgotten corner of South Africa, where humour and kindness flourished amid grinding poverty and brutal racism. The friendship of a wise and feisty nun kept Treive Nicholas on course, opening his eyes to a side of life unfamiliar to a former milkman from suburban England. Her car, ‘the Pig', was a trusty but temperamental companion. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Sasha and Jimmy Miller were not raised on farms and they did not have much practical experience before they purchased an old farmstead within the boundaries of Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Armed with an audacious vision and self-taught knowledge, in just five years they have transformed the land into a bountiful permaculture farm where they run a CSA program and farm store, raise chickens, ducks and pigs (and a couple of boys), and grow a variety of fruits and vegetables. As the Millers prepare to expand the farm in a new way, I talk to Sasha about growing a successful farm from scratch, how a farmstead like hers can impact a community through engagement and education, and why our choice to "buy local" matters. Hint: We also talk about chasing down loose pigs.

Beginning with an in-depth look at the very prevalent wild hogs in the US, Estabrook then turns to how we farm pigs for meat. This is the book to read if you want to understand the moral, environmental, sustainability, and health failures of conventional hog farming. Join us for another great discussion.

Callie and Kaitlin discuss a dubious classic of the Satanic Panic era. It's a mixed bag of late '70s spookitude, with casual racism, lite spousal abuse, and gratuitous priests aplenty -- but also some genuinely excellent scares and a Very Good Dog named Harry. Lock your babysitter in a closet, slap on some fly repellant, and come get your ghost on!

Better than Proust -- the man who made literature out of colloquial French -- the arch chronicler of human depravity --- some of the things that are said about Louis Ferdinand Céline, author of Journey to the End of the Night - one of the masterpieces of 20th century literature. His semi- autobiographical novel, first published in 1932, is a ferocious assault on the hypocrisy and idiocy of his time. It follows its anti hero Ferdinand Bardamu from the battlefields of the First World War to Africa and America before returning to Paris and a chilling confrontation with his demons. The book established Céline as a an original and dangerous voice amongst the generation of writers who emerged from the carnage of the Great War. The fluency of his prose, its tone and bristling attitude has won him many admirers among them Philip Roth and Joseph Heller. He's entered popular culture too -- being quoted by Jim Morrison in the Doors' song End of the Night. But as well as the praise there's been criticism - not least for the vicious anti-Semitism that surfaces in some of his later work. To explore the novel and the man Rana Mitter is joined by the writers, Marie Darrieussecq and Tibor Fischer, the literary historian, Andrew Hussey, and Céline's latest biographer, Damian Catani. Marie Darrieussecq is the author of novels including Pig Tales, Tom is Dead and her latest Our Life in the Forest Andrew Hussey is the author of The French Intifada : The Long War Between France and its Arabs Tibor Fischer is the author of the novels, How to Rule the World, Under the Frog and The Thought Gang. Damian Catani teaches at Birkbeck College in London and is writing a biography of Céline that will be published in 2020 by Reaktion Books. Producer: Zahid Warley
Matthew Sweet takes to the woods with thoroughly modern witch, William Hunter, and writer and folklorist, Zoe Gilbert, to look for green men and suitable spots for a ritual. If modern magic is all about re-enchanting the world then old magic was more about fear and keeping witches out but as a new exhibition opens in Oxford, Dafydd Daniel and Lisa Mullen discuss whether magical thinking is an inevitable part of being human while in Marie Darrieussecq's new novel set in a not very far away and dystopian future, the forest is the last haven for fugitives. Our Life in the Forest by Marie Darrieussecq also looks at clones and trafficking. Her first novel, Pig Tales, was translated into thirty-five languages. As Radio 3 explores the idea of forests of the imagination she joins presenter Matthew Sweet along with New Generation Thinkers Dr Dafydd Daniel, who teaches at Jesus College, University of Oxford and Dr Lisa Mullen, who is the Steven Isenberg Junior Research Fellow, Worcester College. Zoe Gilbert's novel Folk is out now. Spellbound: Magic, Ritual & Witchcraft runs at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford until 6 January 2019. Next, he shares his pre-game adventures at New York Jock Party, a weekly exclusive gay sex party in New York City. And finally, Rick discloses what goes on at the infamous Saint At Large's The Black Party. An annual leather circuit party in an old warehouse in Brooklyn. Brian was in LA during this taping gogo dancing at The Bullet Bar
Barry says that his two books "Pig Tales" and "Tomatoland" are "rooted in this notion of commodity agriculture." And that, although our current agriculture industry leaves much to be desired, "there is something we can all do. And we can start doing it the next time we go to the supermarket." Barry's solution? Vote with your dollars. Choose the pasture-raised pork and the organic tomatoes. Be the change.

Barry Estabrook joins Katy Keiffer for this week’s episode of What Doesn’t Kill You to discuss his latest book, Pig Tales: An Omnivore’s Quest for Sustainable Meat — an eye-opening investigation of the commercial pork industry and an inspiring alternative to the way pigs are raised and consumed in America. Barry Estabrook, author of the New York Times bestseller Tomatoland and a writer of “great skill and compassion” (Eric Schlosser), now explores the dark side of the American pork industry. Drawing on his personal experiences raising pigs as well as his keen investigative reporting, Estabrook shows how these immensely intelligent creatures are too often subjected to lives of suffering, sustained on a drug-laced diet just long enough to reach slaughter weight, then killed on mechanized disassembly lines. It doesn’t have to be this way, and Pig Tales presents a lively portrait of those farmers who are taking an alternative approach, proving that it is possible to raise pigs responsibly and respectfully in a way that is good for producers, consumers, and some of the top chefs in America. Provocative and richly informed, Pig Tales is bound to generate conversation at dinner tables across America. This program was brought to you by EscapeMaker.com. “97 percent of pigs raised in this country live in these horrific crammed confinement buildings where their feet never touch the ground and they never breathe fresh air or see sunshine.” [15:00] “Gestation crates will be relics of past — they will be goners.” [44:00] –Barry Estabrook on What Doesn’t Kill You
