On this episode of the Xian Archive Podcast, Matt is joined by music producer, drummer & DJ Zach Morillo. As the artist ‘ MORiLLO ', Zach has released three albums, three ep's, and a multitude of singles and remixes on established labels such as Gravitas Recordings, Muti Music, High Vibe Records, Tribal Trap, Hybrid Trap, Simplify, and Play Me Records. As he continues to build his project, Zach's music has been celebrated by music lovers and DJ's on stages and at festivals around the world. During the conversation the two discuss Zach's musical path, his experiences with festivals, psychedelics and synchronicity. They also discuss ecstatic dance, musical gear, DAWS and mindset for creating, plus more. At the young age of 7, Zach's journey in music began when he became close friends with his next-door neighbors, the children of the late legendary drummer, Jeff Porcaro. Through spending time at Jeff's house in Orlando, Florida, Zach was exposed to the life of a musician and first sat down behind a set of drums. He quickly discovered his natural talent and passion for music and rhythm. Making music has been his life's focus ever since. Zach attended the Music and Performing Arts magnet program at Dr. Phillips High School where he learned to master rudimentary skills, serving as the captain of the drum-line and studying privately with jazz greats, Danny Gottlieb and Joe Morello. His musical education continued at the University of Miami's Frost School of Music where he was awarded scholarship for a Jazz Drums major in the Studio Music and Jazz Bachelors program. During his time at UM, he quickly became one of the most sought after drummers in school and in the greater Miami and South Florida area. He performed regularly with many of the local hip-hop, reggae, and rock bands while working steadily in the corporate top-40 circuit. With a desire to expand his opportunities across the music world, Zach moved to Los Angeles in 2012. He quickly found work as a touring drummer for internationally acclaimed artists RHYE, Childish Gambino, and Groundation and has traveled the world performing at the biggest and best festivals and venues like Coachella, Red Rocks, and The Hollywood Bowl. In addition, he has been creating and developing his own unique sound and identity through music production and djing. Reid Speed is recognized worldwide as a highly skilled drum & bass DJ as well as a pioneer of the hybrid-genre bass music movement. From her start at legendary NYC drum & bass store/label Breakbeat Science to founding her own labels Play Me Records and Play Me Too, she has remained a fan favorite DJ, a chart topping producer, and was seen as an instrumental player in the development of the North American Bass Music sound. She’s known for dropping blistering multi-genre sets that have inspired a generation of female DJs. With her keen ear, Play Me has become a launchpad for more hot new artists than any other label of its kind, helping to kickstart the careers of the likes of Dillon Francis, Must Die, Figure, Bare, Singularity, Cyberoptics, and many more. Reid is one of the few old skool DJs who opened the door for women and who continues to set the standard high for female DJs in EDM. We're thrilled to welcome our good pals Keith MacKenzie & DJ Fixx back for this their third Armory Podcast appearance! Press play. Get down. Keith MacKenzie has emerged as one of the driving forces behind the global breakbeat scene, regularly gigging across the US and Europe. Now based in Chicago, Keith spent his formative years in the now legendary Florida rave scene racking up early credits on influential labels like DJ Icey's Zone Records and After Dark before launching his own label. Illeven:Eleven Recordings, now in its 11th year of operations, built a reputation for releasing quality collaborations from a diverse roster of artists (Audiostalkers, Deekline & Ed Solo, Fixx, Infiniti, Bass Kleph, Gigi Barocco, Rico Tubbs, Sporty-O, Sue Cho and Whiskey Pete have all released on the label) making it a Beatport mainstay in the process. Under the informal moniker of KMFX alongside Fixx he's gone on to release internationally on labels like Deekline's Rat Records, as well as Punks, the venerable UK imprint formed by breakbeat stalwarts Stanton Warriors. In 2012 Keith teamed up with long time creative collaborators Fixx and D:RC to form Smookie Illson, a new bass music alias for studio experiments that fall outside the rather strict umbrella of breakbeat music. After trying their hand at everything from electro house to moombahton (signing their first demos to Potty Mouth Music in the process) they found their footing in the EDM "trap" scene, churning out bootlegs and originals at a brisk pace and gaining steady support from fans and peers alike. Their 2013 bootleg remix of Yo Majesty's 'Club Action' turned into one of the longest-running festival season selections, gaining support year after year from scene favorites like Skrillex & Diplo, Baauer, RL Grime, Brillz, and Loudpvck. 2015 saw Smookie Illson releasing their 'Compound Riddims EP' a highly-rated collab with the UK's Ragga Twins on Play Me Records, as well as releases on Seattle's Simplify Records and Australia's Safari Music. Over the past 15 years, breakbeat pioneer DJ Fixx has been stocking the shelves of record stores everywhere. Said by many as one of the most innovative and consistent producers in the industry, he continues to deliver some of the most sought after breakbeat tracks available. Making his debut in 1998, Fixx produced over 75 anthems on the classic Kaleidoscope Music label. Many of these timeless tracks are still played frequently today. This was then followed by Fixx's own personal imprint, Bottom-End Records (2004-2008). Managed by Afterdark, the BER trademark produced some of the biggest anthems in the industry, easily claiming the spot of one of the top five best-selling domestic labels in the country. Alongside of Keith MacKenzie, Fixx is currently a leading producer for Keith's illeven:eleven label. Frequent solo installments can be found on ILL, as well as collaborations with Keith under the production duo 'KMFX'. With over 150 12-inch releases, over 300 exclusive digital releases, and twelve massively-distributed CDs under his belt, Fixx has assembled one impressive Discography. All of this resulting in one of the strongest and most loyal followings in the industry. https://www.facebook.com/keithmackenzieofficial https://soundcloud.com/keithmackenzie https://twitter.com/illeveneleven https://instagram.com/keithmackenzie/ http://www.soundcloud.com/dj_fixx http://www.instagram/fixxisill http://www.twitter.com/fixxisill http://www.soundcloud.com/smookieillson Artwork by Jem Panufnik

Cappa Regime is a creative collective composed of Jake Kasheta, Shane Sherzai, Richard Nash (Rykr), Rob Enea (Erratic), and Charlie Doughan. With complementary production skills and a mastery of instruments ranging from piano to drums to guitar, they are endeavoring to break out of the "banger" soundscape that EDM has constructed for itself. In the studio, they aren't confined to a single genre, and channel influences as disparate as The Isley Brothers and E40. They produce melodic, expectation defying tracks to keep bodies moving and fresh minds blown. This year, Cappa Regime played a West Coast tour culminating in a play at Coachella, and were also chosen to play at EDC Las Vegas and Beyond Wonderland. Their live show is an energetic amalgamation of many dance genres; they integrate urban, vintage, and modern electronic dance elements throughout, so it has something for everyone. Their most recent remix of James Egbert's Exit Wounds was endorsed by the artist, and hailed as “brilliant” by EDM.com. They also just released a 2 track EP with Play Me Records. Constantly creating new content, they plan on releasing collaborations with Nina Sung and Del The Funky Homosapien (one of his first electronic collaborations since his work with Gorillaz) in spring of 2014. Episode 003 of Head-Fi TV was just uploaded. This episode is a short video overview of the Cypher Labs Algorhythm Solo, which, as far as portable source components go, is a game changer, in my opinion (based on what's currently available). Products mentioned in the video: Cypher Labs Algorhythm Solo battery-powered iPod/iPhone/iPad digital dock and DAC (digital-to-analog converter) beyerdynamic DT 1350 headphones Sennheiser / adidas HD 25-1 II Originals headphones Audeze LCD-2 planar magnetic headphones ALO Audio: various dock cables and headphone cable (with adapter system) for Audeze LCD-2 Ray Samuels Audio SR-71B fully balanced portable headphone amp The music in the video was by Twis7 (pronounced "twist"), and the track is called "Ghetto Bass," and can be found on the Bass Rinse EP. Thank you to the Play Me Records record label for giving us permission to use it. (Audeze's Alexander Rosson is one of the principals of the Play Me Records label, by the way.) One thing I didn't mention in the video that I really wanted to (but left out, in the interest of not running too long like I did in Episode 002) was the use of Apple Airplay to stream to an iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad-->Algorhythm Solo-->portable amp rig, when I'm at home. This allows me to feed the Solo music that is being streamed from my multi-terabyte primary iTunes library to the portable iDevice. So, when I'm out of the house, the rig in the video is what I've been using. But when I'm at home, I usually lash an iPhone to this rig (in place of the iPod Classic), for use with Airplay. I also wanted to mention that the Solo can be used while plugged into its wall power adapter. Thanks to joe for working with me on these videos--I couldn't do it without him. Also, we may occasionally include a Q&A segment in future episodes of Head-Fi TV. If you want to submit any questions (or comments), you can do so via email to tv@head-fi.org

The Panda Dubstep Mix Show presents Reid Speed. This American dubstep, drum and bass and electro producer and DJ is the founder of Play Me Records, one of the labels making splashes in the dubstep genre right now. Reid started out years ago in the New York City underground working behind the counter at the legendary Breakbeat Science store while in college at the School of Visual Arts. Drum and bass at the start, she was soon seduced by the sounds of 2-step and speed garage and began DJing full time, producing tracks and throwing her own events. Recently garnering new acclaim as the founder of chart-topping Play Me Records. In just over 2 years, Play Me Records and Play Me Too have taken the Beatport charts by storm, with 6 #1s, more than half the releases charting in the top 10, and nearly every release charting in the top 100. They have broken more new artists and launched the careers of artists like Cyberoptics, J. Rabbit, Tremourz and Bare. 2010 saw Play Me Records voted Dubstep Label of the Year by Beatport, and Beatport has now signed on to sponsor the Play Me Bass Monster Tour for 2011. Play Me's self-described mission is to bring the joy of bass to everyone. With Reid Speed on the lead, they're sure doing that. In this mix, Reid Speed bring us 18 of her label's best and latest tracks, remixes and exclusives in a 40-minute mix. Leave your appreciation for her in the comments! ★BIOGRAPHY★ Reid Speed has been a dancefloor destroyer for over a decade and is best known for skillfully throwing down all genres of bass music. She has recently garnered new acclaim as the Bass Boss of her top-charting labels Play Me Records and Play Me Too. Respected the world over as one of America's best DJs, with a host of mix compilations and a slew of original and group productions under her belt, she now devotes most of her time to running the Play Me brand.
