Todays episode is hosted by Degrassi's Annie Clark and her sister, The Quiet Beatle herself, Ali - (A sophisticated treat for all, as these sisters know the Queens English!) - while Sam enjoys her mat leave. (And by ENJOYS, I mean she lives in a COT at the hospital with a gaping stomach wound, but anyway I'm not supposed to even be writing this, I'm just doing it because I had a free moment in my weird hospital dorm room, and Annie is putting Bennett to sleep. I'm NOT EVEN HERE). Today the girls answer questions about a sister being a bitch about her sisters wedding and also something about parenthood? Idk I haven't listened yet. Gonna listen now from my COT. LOVE Y'ALL!
"Top Of The World" The Emmy Award-nominated Mark Bacino is more than just a craftsman of pure pop magic--he's a producer, composer, educator and journalist. I first got on board with Mark's music in 2003 for his brilliant album Million Dollar Milkshake, which was the follow-up to his equally brilliant debut, Pop Job. Since then, he's put out Queens English in 2010 and fifteen years later he's backed that up with his brand new album Top Of The World. A sterling ten-song set, Top Of The World is filled with hooks galore, but it's also Bacino's most observational and philosophical work yet. Filled with tracks like the thrilling percussive stomp of Not That Guy to the horny swagger of Flop Of The World, Bacino has never sounded more assured. Falling somewhere between Marshall Crenshaw and Mike Viola, Bacino's music is a refreshing and charming streetsmart pop. I call him the Cole Porter of Queens because his lyrics are clever, his timing impeccable and his humor and wisdom always on full display. Bacino is the owner of The Queens English Recording Co., a boutique studio-music production house where he produces fellow artists and composes for TV/advertising. He currently serves as Producer of New Media and Audio Content for Queens Public Television in New York City where he's earned those two Emmy nominations for his audio engineering work and he hosts both the “Queens Creative” and “Queens County USA” podcasts. He also writes for Guitar World, SonicScoop and Songwriter's Market. www.markbacino.com (http://www.markbacino.com) www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradio.com) www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) Stereo Embers The Podcast Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast
This week on The Joy of Cruising Podcast, I am thankful. Thankful that you have allowed me into your personal space for 80 times over this past year. I am thankful to the listeners that have made this podcast global in 100 countries. Cruising is loved throughout the world! And I am so appreciative of our guests, who make it possible for me to attract you. I only wish I could have included all 80 guests in this show. We premiered a year ago, with Sheri of Cruise Tips TV, followed up by Ilana of Life Well Cruised. I knew early on who I wanted to start the podcast with. Both are friends; Sheri and Cruise Tips TV was in both The Joy of Cruising and Cruising Interrupted and did my first video ad for The Joy of Cruising. So in the first clip I wanted to honor her and say thank you by playing the first words of the first guest on the show. Ilana and Life Well Cruised was in Cruising Interrupted. She is also in the 1st clip and I wanted to honor her and say thank you by sharing the 1st of many of the most memorable, funniest, and most embarrassing moments in this one year old celebration. Finally in this 1st clip I share my most embarrassing moment. I am sure I butcher the Queens English from time-to-time; and in my very 1st show—that's right with Sheri—my phone rings and I discovered it well after the episode was released! My most embarrassing moment was when I was a guest on a podcast which shall remain nameless. I made a boo boo, apologized to the host and completed an otherwise very nice conversation. Of course my expectation was that the host would edit out my boo boo and apology. Uh, nope.Thank you listeners, thank youThe Joy of Cruising Podcast .guests. Here's to a great second year.Support the show

What's the difference between kiwi English and American English? And do we even go there with British English? In today's episode we're going to explore kiwi pronunciation and how it differs from Mother England and English in the USA. The key here is to not take things too seriously and remember that, as individuals, we all have our own special ways of mangling what is commonly known as “the Queens English” – even for us native speakers it can sound foreign! Happy listening

The UK rap scene is reaching critical mass. Jah has noticed, as he's dropped albums like Little Simz's 'GREY Area' in the group text. But when will the States embrace rap in the Queen's English, embrace Stormzy as much as Oasis, much less embrace some actual Black Beatles? To quote Yoh: Buy foreign verses, not foreign cars.

Regular listeners know that, on occasion, I go off the beaten path of politics, public policy and Christian apologetics and cover seemingly random topics. This episode falls in that category. I have been watching English Premier League soccer for about four years now. During that time, I found myself intrigued by the colorful language used by the British play-by-play commentators as they described the flow of the game, its players, the fans, penalties, rivalries, and the nuances of the game of soccer. It’s like having a live Thesaurus on your TV! For the last year or so, I watched games while armed with a notebook and a pen documenting all of the creative references. This episode is a compilation of my notes and, where necessary, a translation of what the commentary means. By the way, you do not need to be a soccer fan to enjoy this episode. Everyone will get a kick out of the use of the Queen's English. Foundations of Amateur Radio On Thursday the 3rd of July 2008 at 6 minutes to 7 at night a developer called Dan KK7DS started to scratch an itch and published the results. The next morning before breakfast Dan added more. Since then about a hundred people from around the globe have contributed to that project. Some people made little changes, others made large contributions over many years. In all, on average, the project saw a change every 29 hours over more than a decade of contributions. On the 16th of July, less than two weeks into the project, it got a name, CHIRP. It's been translated from US English to Spanish, French, Hungarian, Italian, Dutch, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian and the Queens English. From the beginning of talking to a single Icom IC-92 radio, CHIRP today supports 27 different Icom radios, 36 different brands of radio, hundreds of different radios in all, with new ones being added every couple of months or so. The software runs on anything that will run Python, that includes Windows, OS X and Linux and it does it with an extremely modest footprint and it's free, free in cost and free as in Open Source. If you're not familiar with CHIRP and you have a radio, then it's time to get to know this tool. It makes it simple to program your radio, to configure settings and to make backups of your current channel listings. I should mention that this is not just for hand held radios, there are plenty of HF base station radios supported. When you run CHIRP it presents you with a window where you have a spreadsheet view of the channels in your radio. You can download the channels from your radio or upload new ones. Changing a frequency is as simple as clicking on the frequency and typing a new one, with a full-human-sized keyboard, rather than the poor excuse for a dial-pad your radio has. If your radio supports it, you can supply a human readable name, configure offsets, CTCSS and tuning step size, the mode and several other properties. If you're unsure where to get started, CHIRP even comes with a list of frequencies to get you on your way. You can create different configurations for different types of operations. For example, if you're into SOTA, you can make a configuration file that has all the relevant SOTA frequencies, but when you head back home and want to use the local repeater network, you can build a set for that. If you visit a different state, another country, or if you want to copy your channels from one radio to another, you can with CHIRP. If you want to get started, there's a Beginners Guide, a list of frequently asked questions and you'll find information about what cables to use, specific errors and issues you might encounter and if you're a software developer, you'll find information on how to contribute. If you want the ability to program your radio on any computer, you can download a boot-able CD that will run CHIRP without installing it and if you need help, there's an active mailing list, going back to 2008, an up to date wiki, issue tracker and of course, you can download the source-code, if that's your fancy. CHIRP makes all that possible because one amateur wanted to scratch an itch. What's itchy in your life? I'm Onno VK6FLAB

I'm home in the U.S. now! My brother met me at the airport, and then drove me 2 1/2 hours to our mother's house. It was great to see my mother and her three cats again. . . and my brother and his cat! Yes, at the moment there are four cats at home. Wow, that's a lot of cats. :-) I'm not able to send you the last interview I had, with a hitchhiker from Singapore, because it's on the good Dell laptop that stopped working a week ago. I'm writing this on a brand new Lenovo laptop that I ordered from Amazon, which arrived yesterday. I'm writing this at 2 am, because I have jetlag. That means that I sleep at the wrong times. It will take me about eight days to get my sleep patterns back to normal. Some people adapt to new time zones easily, but I don't. Here's one of my older interviews, with a nice guy I worked with for four years, Gavin. This is from November 2015. TQ 022 Gavin from England (Replay) Gavin is my neighbor and co-worker . . . I know, it seems like I have a lot of neighbors and co-workers! He's from London, England. He explains to me that he speaks the Queen's English, also called BBC English. Compare his accent with Andy's in TQ 019. Gavin also tries to explain England, Britain and the U.K. to me, but I'm not sure I got it. Listen as he talks about world cinema, including Japanese movies and Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan. He also tells us about a unique British holiday called Guy Faulkes Day and suggests a museum for us to visit at the Forbidden City in Beijing.
In this episode of the Faith Driven Entrepreneur Podcast, Henry, William and Rusty tackle the issue of language. At one level, they aren't going to tell you anything that will surprise you....cursing is a bad thing and it's not helpful in the workplace, or anywhere else for that matter. The book of James hits this issue squarely, and so do dozens of other references. Yet there's some nuance here that we think is worth exploring as the effective use of language and even emotion are so incredibly important for us as leaders in the workplace. We look at this issue from a variety of angles in this short edition: How does one navigate the dynamic between relatability and holiness? Is the "Queen's English" sufficient to get our point across? How does one deal with bad language from others in the office? How does language and it's use help us to understand our level of anxiety, our ultimate identity and our ability to witness. Let us know if you think we're missing something in this brief look at how to communicate effectively, and please, as always, forward this to others if you think it might be helpful.....especially those you know overseas as it's our hope that this won't just be a North American initiative. That'll allow us to get more feedback on how to improve the podcast, and more ideas from a broader audience. Thank you for your partnership!
Colber Prosper and I met at the inception of the Wild Goose Festival's LEAD NOW! program in 2015. We both returned as contributors in 2016. LEAD NOW! applied his teaching and leadership skills while I joined the first-ever GooseCast, a stage dedicated to podcasters. Colber is an author and the founder of Prosper & Partners. Colber's first book, No Entry: Examining the Powers that Undermine Our Full Potential, is a unique breakthrough book. It is accessible like Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates and has substance like The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander. First, as any work of art it draws from unique combinations of sources. It synthesizes material and ideas from many wide-ranging sources, including hard sciences, music, poetry, social sciences and life experience. Second, No Entry is useful! Concepts discussed have lists, steps, or categories. You can identify what you have or what's missing in your circumstance and move to affect change in your life! And if you ever find yourself without clear direction then you can contact the team at Prosper & Partners! A third uniqueness is the code switching that takes place. By "code switching" I mean changing dialects or registers, or, in the extreme, actually changing languages. To a reader, like myself, who only knows "proper English" to be "the Queen's English," all of the content is still completely accessible. A reader might, again like myself, initially perceive there to be typos or grammatical errors. The error, however, is with the reader. The purpose of Colber's code switching in No Entry is to remain authentic to as many parts of himself as possible in the span of a short book. In our interview he says, "We need to start being able to share our full selves and not pieces of ourselves." Beyond the book, Colber is the founder and senior consultant for Prosper & Partners, an international consulting firm that specializes in professional and organizational development. He is an innovative and compassionate leader who has been recognized for his ability to educate youth and adult professionals on various topics. Colber is an experienced facilitator that has led a plethora of presentations and workshops. He has done extensive research on issues of inclusion, social justice, organizational change, middle management and higher education. He has also provided trainings in coalition building, substance abuse prevention and organizational development around the world in places such as Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Cape Town, South Africa, Nairobi, Kenya and several more. His extensive background in strategic planning and implementation has made him an asset to various higher educational institutions and non-profit organizations. Finally, Colber teaches at the University of the District of Columbia where his research is being used to increase student engagement. Northern accents at work: Trainee teachers are under pressure to speak the Queen's English. Laurie Taylor talks to Alex Barrata, lecturer in Linguistics at the University of Manchester, & author of a study which finds that certain regional accents are frowned upon in a profession that would normally oppose discrimination. They're joined by Paul Kerswill, Professor in the Department of Language and Linguistic Science at the University of York. Sensible drinkers: the drinking discourses of real ale enthusiasts. Thomas Thurnell-Read, Lecturer in Cultural Sociology at the University of Loughborough, explores the way in which some drinkers construct themselves as sociable and self controlled, in contrast to their hedonistic and unruly counterparts Producer: Jayne Egerton.
