Roy L Hales/ Cortes Currents - The federal election in North Island–Powell River (NIPR) may be far closer than recent projections suggest, but the ‘progressive' vote is split between three parties (Green. Liberal and NDP). Some people are urging voters to rally behind a single alternative to Conservative candidate Aaron Gunn. The Votewell and Smart Voting websites both declared the strategic vote in our riding is the NDP candidate Tanille Johnson. As of Thursday, April 17, Johnson became the 18th Canadian candidate officially endorsed by Lead Now. So did the participants in a recent virtual townhall meeting on Cortes Island.

“Digital advocacy organizations are recognized as influential actors by the media, politicians, and some academics. In 2016, GetUp, an Australian digital advocacy organization, was named by the Australian Financial Review as one of the top ten actors with ‘covert power' in Australia.1 Campact in Germany has powerfully mobilized public opinion against the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership. MoveOn was one of the ‘leading advocacy organizations' mobilizing people against the Iraq War in the United States. Meanwhile, Leadnow, a digital advocacy organization in Canada, helped to unseat Prime Minister Stephen Harper in the 2015 Canadian federal election. The leader's private life, their character and their values, are more important than ever in today's culture. Listen in to find out how to avoid sinking the ship & lead with integrity. I got mixed reviews after not preaching during last week's midweek worship service. Some of you felt like something was missing. Some of you were thrilled that something was missing. To be clear, I wasn't just being lazy or trying to shirk my responsibilities – though it was nice not to have to prepare a sermon and to get to just be here in worship without having much to add. See, the Holden Evening Prayer liturgy doesn't call for a sermon. It's supposed to – and I think it does – speak and sing for itself, so I was going to let it just be. A colleague of mine actually suggested it might be a little arrogant and egotistical to presume I could or should try to add something to it, with my two cents. So I was properly convicted and decided to NOT, for a change.Well, for those of you who wanted a little something else – notice I didn't say “more,” but something “else” – I decided on a compromise for this evening. This won't take long.In my sermon from Sunday, I talked about listening to and learning from voices and perspectives and the life experiences of others, so I thought I would share with you a poem from a woman's perspective – Kaitlin Shetler – who writes what she calls “Poems for the Resistance.” They are beautiful and sometimes R-rated, which can, in fact go together, in my opinion. This poem is not R-rated, but beautiful and challenging, just the same. And it's very much what I was getting at on Sunday about those “voices in the wilderness,” that the likes of John the Baptist, represent for me if I'm willing to listen. It's called “sometimes i wonder.”sometimes I wonderif mary breastfed jesusif she cried out when he bit heror if she sobbed when he would not latchand sometimes I wonderif this is all too vulgarto ask in a churchfull of menwithout milk stains on their shirtsor coconut oil on their breastspreaching from pulpits off limits to the mother of godbut then i think of feeding jesusbirthing jesusthe expulsion of bloodand smell of sweatthe salt of a mother's tearsonto the soft head of the salt of the earthfeeling lonelyand tiredhungryannoyedoverwhelmedloving and i thinkif the vulgarity of birth is nothonestly preachedby men who carry power but not burdenwho carry privilege but not laborwho carry authority but not submissionthen it should not be preached at allbecause the real scandal of the birth of godlies in the cracked nipples of a14 year oldand not in the sermons of ministerswho say womenare too delicateto leadNow, I don't know Kaitlin Shetler so I wonder what she would think about me reading her poem – this poem, in particular, I mean – as a man, in worship. I'm hoping it's more holy than heretical, from her perspective.Because I decided all of this is something worth sharing, myself, because men like me would, could, should – and do, believe it or not – wonder about these things, sometimes:Like, what was it like to be Mary, weak in the eyes of the world, but so strong in ways that too often go unappreciated or accounted for.Or, what does it mean for men to carry power, but not burden; to carry privilege for which we haven't had to labor; to have authority, but never having submitted in ways that humble us.What is the “vulgarity of birth, honestly preached?” And do we hide from that? And when did we start hiding from that? You can start wondering about that by reading the accounts of Jesus' birth in scripture. To say it's “cleaned up” there is an understatement. In Matthew's Gospel, we hear that Jesus was born, but there's no mention of labor pains, no water breaking, no dilated cervix, no blood, no sweat, no tears at all.In Luke's Gospel, what we just heard tonight, all that is covered and presumed in a single sentence: “she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth and laid him in a manger...,” just like that. The Gospels of Mark and John don't even mention Mary or the birth narrative in any way that implies there was ever a baby Jesus – he just appears… fully grown… ready to be baptized, in the river, by his cousin, John. So, it's easy to imagine that what mattered to the men who wrote, recorded or decided which versions of the story mattered, might have been different from what a woman would have chosen to include had she been asked.Which is why I think it's good for the words of a woman to come from the lips of a man, not only because women have been saying and singing the words of men for so very long, but because men, like me, have so very much to learn from women who wonder differently about the world than we do a lot of the time. All of that said, let's hear Kaitlin Shetler's poem again, mostly because it's worth another listen. But also, because it's worth another listen, from another voice, more like Mary's. And so we can wonder in a new way what “the vulgarity of birth, honestly preached,” might inspire for us about the coming of God, in Jesus, by way of a young girl with more strength and power, more brokenness and beauty than we often give her credit for. (Thanks to Lily Haeberle for being the voice we got to hear from this evening.)sometimes I wonderif mary breastfed jesusif she cried out when he bit heror if she sobbed when he would not latchand sometimes I wonderif this is all too vulgarto ask in a churchfull of menwithout milk stains on their shirtsor coconut oil on their breastspreaching from pulpits off limits to the mother of godbut then i think of feeding jesusbirthing jesusthe expulsion of bloodand smell of sweatthe salt of a mother's tearsonto the soft head of the salt of the earthfeeling lonelyand tiredhungryannoyedoverwhelmedloving and i thinkif the vulgarity of birth is nothonestly preachedby men who carry power but not burdenwho carry privilege but not laborwho carry authority but not submissionthen it should not be preached at allbecause the real scandal of the birth of godlies in the cracked nipples of a14 year oldand not in the sermons of ministerswho say womenare too delicateto leadAmen.

The NDP candidate for Halifax -- Lisa Roberts -- hopes to follow in the footsteps of her predecessors Meghan Leslie and Alexa McDonough. Halifax is a riding that was held by the NDP from 1997 until 2015, when it was won by Liberal Andy Fillmore. As a mother working the campaign trail, Roberts told our national politics reporter Stephen Wentzell that a September election is an even bigger hurdle for parents -- primarily for women candidates, who often take on much of the child care for their families. "I think the beginning of September is an inappropriate time to be making important decisions about who our leaders will be," Roberts said, adding it's so far from an ideal time to be asking people to engage in political debate. "I am in a party and was in a provincial caucus with a high number of female candidates with relatively younger families, and it makes it very, very difficult," Roberts said. Meanwhile, Libby Davies sat down -- virtually -- for a Q&A with Regina -- Lewvan candidate Tria Donaldson, who is running for the NDP. Donaldson spoke about facing a "Blue wall" meaning in her province of Saskatchewan, there is a slate of Conservative incumbent candidates. That wasn't necessarily what Donaldson was worried about in this election, however. Here's what she told Davies: A lot of people are feeling powerless. Especially in Saskatchewan. A lot of folks I talked to have this idea that [the election] doesn't matter because things are decided far away in Ontario and that by the time our polls close, things are already being decided in eastern Canada. So there's a lot of disengagement and disillusionment. The way we combat that is by getting down to what power is and what kind of power people have. Voting is one form of exercising our power, but so is mobilizing. We need to make sure that we're holding our politicians accountable. The cynicism people have is really challenging and something we all need to overcome when we're encouraging people to live their politics and get out and vote or take action for things like public health care or education funding. These are many issues people care about, but they don't feel like voting will make a difference. I think we just need to do a lot of work on getting people to engage politically. Also this week at rabble, Robert Hackett writes about how you can vote strategically and still vote your conscience: vote for the climate. Instead of voting automatically for a particular party, support candidates with a reasonable chance of winning, and a strong track record of backing climate action inside or outside Parliament. The campaigning organizations LeadNow and 350.org have identified thirty candidates as "climate champions." For a list of those champions, head to the site to read his article. As far as strategic voting in the traditional sense goes? It's utter bullshit, writes Judy Rebick. She unpacks what a feminist vote actually looks like this election cycle. I'll leave you with her advice: Vote for the candidate you support. Having strong local and progressive representation in government matters. In recent years under President Farmaajo, Somali has tried to steer away from the indirect election in the respective elections for the lower and upper houses. Failure to fix the issues that led to the indirect elections have come back to haunt and as Lead Now co-founder Ruqia Botan spells out, this may just prove to be the journey into the political unknown for a rather versatile and complex Somali society.

Episode #12 Do you always feel like there's a lot going on in your brain? Are you having a hard time when it comes to problem-solving and decisions making? How do you leverage your brain at work? Our brain is always functioning and performing behind the scenes...that's why it demands so much from your body. We need to differentiate the decisions, changes, and choices that are important from those that aren't. Recognize that not every activity you engage in requires the same level of brainpower. Schedule your day from a 'brain energy management' perspective and not just an 'importance' perspective. It is also very important to give yourself a little quiet time to mentally adjust and process before making big decisions. Let your mind connect the problems that are still unsolved and your brain will solve them behind the scene. You just need to turn off distractions to listen to some of those answers. When it comes to black talent in today's workforce, do you believe there's not enough of it? Or maybe, we just aren't intentionally looking for it?Today, we're bringing back Angela Shaw to dive deeper into what every day feels like for a black person, especially in the workplace, and how people need to intentionally welcome diversity into their business instead of depending on systems that are currently in place. And how we do that? Ironically, it's not through large movements and aggressive battle cries - it's as simple as sitting down, having genuine conversations, and actively pushing for diversity in the workplace.8:17 - Black talent in today's workforce: if there not enough? or are we not looking for it?11:22 - A diverse workforce is a better workforce20:30 - Diverse people often have to assimilate to the white standard of professionalism.27:00 - White people don't consciously think about equality because they don't live in fear of prejudice.28:06 - Change starts with cleaning your own house. Revolutionary change is expensive - start with small steps.33:00 - Diversity - does it have any benefits to your life as a whole?40:16 - The line between supporting black culture and appropriation.51:06 - Lack of understanding is what creates fear.1:04:00 - Small changes are more digestible. Dramatic changes create barriers and make people defensive.1:12:45 - Being picked out because you're the only one is definitely better than being ignored because you're the only one.1:19:50 - Angela's passionate plea to entrepreneurs"Get to know people who are different than you, give value to their stories and let it change the way you do things" GET IN TOUCH:Mark Leary: www.linkedin.com/in/markhlearywww.leary.ccAngela Shaw:www.linkedin.com/in/angelalshaw Production credit:Engineering / Post-Production: Jim McCarthyArt / Design: Immanuel Ahiable

1. Keep it AUTHENTIC.Authentic works more than ever before. Who you are is more important than your production level. If you can produce on a huge stage that's fine. People need you and need real, genuine, and authentic even more than well polished and produced. Keeping it real is calming and anchoring. 2. Keep it PERSONAL Look into the camera lens, but visualize the faces of your people. When you imagine your audience your tone of voice becomes more expressive and full of empathy as well as more natural. Place pictures of people so you see them. Be warm, friendly, engaging, even more than you would in a live setting. SMILE. 3. Keep it SHORT5-7 minutes for students. Twice that for adults. When communicating live you can hold a room for 30 min. The best of the best communicators will struggle to engage an online audience for that length. Online viewing is much less polite. I just swipe or click right out and nobody knows. In a live setting, I have to get up and walk out. Take your 30 min message and divide it into 2 or 3 parts. Think daily dose rather than a weekly message. 4. Keep it UNPOLISHED Don't recreate what's already gone. Don't try to figure out how to do what you used to do the way you used to do it. Everything is different now. And some of that, quite honestly, is for the better. You can do things now you would never typically do: Sit on a couch and teach, team teach, allow for a more interactive experience with Q&A5. Keep it TRANSPARENT You're at home and so are they. Put yourself into their presence. Preach from your heart as if you were right there with them, sitting in their living room. Talk family, show pictures, talk about life. People may love what you say, but they identify with you. - Carey Nieuwhof When you're real a person is able to see God is real. 6. Keep on WORKINGPractice, practice, practice. Get feedback. Watch yourself on video. FaceTime a friend and practice. If you don't like watching yourself why would anyone else? 7. Keep it RESPONSIVEShare the gospel. The HS is present even if you feel no one else is. Give them a specific way to respond through your platform - raise a hand, type a message, send a text. 8. Keep it CREATIVELeverage the medium. Be creative. More responsive ways to engage. Add more videos, interviews, Q&A, use it beyond the weekend timeframes, etc…9. Keep it GOSPEL-CENTEREDIf you want your church audience to invite, share, and post your message make sure you include the gospel and give the opportunity for response. Pray. People need your prayers. 10. Keep it RELEVANTRecording multiple sermons in a day to cover several weeks might not allow you to change your content as needed to address how quickly things are changing and moving in our culture. Leading in Chaos5. Embrace Challenge.Challenge Zone - I attempt to do what I've not done before. Comfort Zone - I do what I've always done. Everything worthwhile is uphill. - John MaxwellCoaching Question: What challenges am I avoiding during this season? 6. Embrace Creativity. “Change before you have to.” - Jack Welch A crisis is a wake-up call for creativity even when you're working through fear. Good fear makes me prepare. Bad fear makes me stare. Crisis and chaos require extraordinary flexibility. The mission and vision of the organization should stay the same, but sometimes the plans and strategies must change. For leaders facing chaos, it's natural to retreat to what is familiar, but a strong leader must know when to set pride aside and make choices that may not feel natural but are the best for the organization. The No. 1 Mistake Leaders Make in CrisisDuring a crisis, leaders tend to hyperfocus on managing the threat and neglect long-range thinking. That's a mistake because vision is critical both for evaluating short-term decisions and for creating a better future. - Michael HyattCoaching Question: What changes would you make if you tossed out the old church calendar and started from a blank slate?7. Embrace Trust.“God is too good to be unkind, And He is too wise to be confused. If I cannot trace His hand, I can always trust His heart.” – Charles SpurgeonCoaching Question: How do I lead people in faith in a culture driven by fear? Leaders navigate crisis - that's what leaders do. Get more info on Lead the Generation at www.leadthegeneration.comInterested in over 100 hours of training videos from our conferences. Leading in ChaosCrisis & Chaos is fundamentally what moved the church from being gathered to scattered. It happened at the beginning of the church and it seems to be happening again in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. 1. Embrace RealityFace reality as it is, not as you wish it were - Jack WelchGreat leadership embraces both the real and ideal - Carey NieuwhofThe wisest leaders will embrace what Jim Collins calls the Stockdale Paradox. Jim Stockdale was an American general captured and imprisoned during the Vietnam war. He was held and tortured for seven years. Stockdale said the first people to die in captivity were the optimists, who kept thinking things would get better quickly and they'd be released. “They died of a broken heart,” Stockdale said. Instead, Stockdale argued, the key to survival was to combine realism and hope. In Stockdale's words: “This is a very important lesson. You must never confuse faith that you will prevail in the end–-which you can never afford to lose–-with the discipline to confront the most brutal facts of your current reality, whatever they might be.”Coaching Question: What parts of my current reality am I ignoring or avoiding? 2. Embrace UncertaintyChaos occurs when we FEEL too many things are out of our control. “Uncertainty is not an indication of poor leadership. Rather it indicates a need for leadership. The nature of leadership demands that there always be an element of uncertainty. The temptation is to think, ‘If I were a good leader, I would know exactly what to do.' Increased responsibility means dealing more with more intangibles and therefore more complex uncertainty. Leaders can afford to be uncertain, but we cannot afford to be unclear. People will not follow fuzzy leadership.” - Andy StanleyCoaching Question: What decisions do I need to make now even though I'm uncertain? 3. Embrace Opportunities.Do you see the opportunity or the obstacle? “You're not made in a crisis, you're revealed in a crisis. Squeeze an orange or lemon and orange juice or lemon juice comes out. Squeeze a human in a time of chaos or crisis and what's inside comes out.” - John KinderCoaching Question: What opportunities am I currently missing? 4. Embrace Teamwork.Law of Mt Everest - As the challenges escalate, the need for teamwork elevates. John Maxwell - 17 Indisputable Laws of TeamworkThe Mountain Way - It takes 200-300 on the team for 2 climbers to succeed. Coaching Question: How do we (think team) create meaningful ministry in this season? This week's show was a full one because it looked into a pressing issue: the lack of interurban ground transportation in Northern and Interior British Columbia since Greyhound pulled out of Western Canada. And we looked at the issue from a variety of perspectives: In our first segment, we spoke with Jo-Anna Larson of LeadNow.ca, a Prince Rupert-based educator who led the grassroots campaign for the BC government's replacement service, BC Bus North, a solution she now deems inadequate. In our second, we spoke with Jeremy Hainsworth, who covers this beat for the Prince George Citizen and the other Glacier News papers about the economics and financing behind busing in BC's North. In our third and fourth segments, we spoke with Laura Parent a Prince George activist, who organized the campaign for BC Bus North that took place inside the BC NDP about her views of the service and of the changes to Prince George municipal bus fares this fall. We ended with Vancouver-based transit expert, Richard Campbell who helped to place this issue in comparative international and ethical context.

In May and June, over a hundred groups across the country came together for town hall meetings to discuss climate change and what a Green New Deal for Canada could look like. And the energy continues – there are still a few town halls happening in the month of July. This week, a report was posted online summarizing what some of those findings were, and what communities were saying about how the Green New Deal could be applied in their cities, towns, villages and townships. The Green New Deal town halls were organized by a coalition which included the Council of Canadians, Leadnow, GreenPeace Canada, The Leap and 350.org. According to the report released this week over 7,000 people took part in 150 town halls. On today's show: 1) rabble radio executive producer Victoria Fenner went to one of these town halls in Barrie, Ontario, just north of Toronto. What she discovered was a discussion that was wide ranging, going way beyond what is usually considered to be environmental issues. In a series of questions prepared by the national organizers, participants were invited to look at issues relating to environment and sustainability in the broadest terms possible. The solutions people came up with had to do with environment, economy, transportation, health and every facet of life which is or will be affected by climate change. 2) She also talked to Tim Ellis, one of the national organizers of the Green New Deal town hall project to find out what the next steps are. He works with Leadnow. 3) Also on today's show – Johnny Got His Gun is a musical response to school shootings in the United States, performed and composed by Emilie Feldberg, also known as E.L.F. She contacted rabble radio with her song, which is on today's show, along with an interview with E.L.F. about why she wrote the song. Her songs are strongly inspired by her political views, the impact of her environment on her, and the regular life of a seventeen-year-old today. She has studied music for most of her life, receiving training in classical studies as well as performing indie music. Emilie has taught both piano and voice and plays multiple musical instruments. She completed the royal conservatory of music grades in voice and uses her knowledge of vocal technique and classical styles to inspire her songs. She first became inspired by activism through feminism at a young age and has attended protests throughout her city. Since then, her music reflects what she sees in the world around her. New Year Bonus Coverage & a Look Ahead for what's to come in 2019 for the LeadNOW with Michelle Bembury Podcast!
Days after warning young voters to cast ballot or old white people will determine the election, Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne offered voters everything under the sun in a desperate throne speech. As Wynne, and her foreign funded allies like Leadnow, ruin Ontario, a new poll shows that the province and most of the country are turning their backs on Justin Trudeau. The Angus Reid Institute poll shows millennial voters fleeing Trudeau's Liberals. If an election were held today, the Conservatives would win a majority. And a preview of the gun legislation with a suburban mother and grandmother who loves shooting at the range and doesn't want the new legislation to punish her.
Alex Pierson speaks with President and CEO of Working Canadians Catherine Swift about advocacy group Leadnow's latest efforts against new Ontario PC party leader Doug Ford.
Alex Pierson speaks about supposedly independent advocacy groups like Leadnow that are backed by foreign money and aimed at taking down conservative initiatives and politicians- seen now with their NEVER FORD campaign.

Colber Prosper and I met at the inception of the Wild Goose Festival's LEAD NOW! program in 2015. We both returned as contributors in 2016. LEAD NOW! applied his teaching and leadership skills while I joined the first-ever GooseCast, a stage dedicated to podcasters. Colber is an author and the founder of Prosper & Partners. Colber's first book, No Entry: Examining the Powers that Undermine Our Full Potential, is a unique breakthrough book. It is accessible like Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates and has substance like The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander. First, as any work of art it draws from unique combinations of sources. It synthesizes material and ideas from many wide-ranging sources, including hard sciences, music, poetry, social sciences and life experience. Second, No Entry is useful! Concepts discussed have lists, steps, or categories. You can identify what you have or what's missing in your circumstance and move to affect change in your life! And if you ever find yourself without clear direction then you can contact the team at Prosper & Partners! A third uniqueness is the code switching that takes place. By "code switching" I mean changing dialects or registers, or, in the extreme, actually changing languages. To a reader, like myself, who only knows "proper English" to be "the Queen's English," all of the content is still completely accessible. A reader might, again like myself, initially perceive there to be typos or grammatical errors. The error, however, is with the reader. The purpose of Colber's code switching in No Entry is to remain authentic to as many parts of himself as possible in the span of a short book. In our interview he says, "We need to start being able to share our full selves and not pieces of ourselves." Beyond the book, Colber is the founder and senior consultant for Prosper & Partners, an international consulting firm that specializes in professional and organizational development. He is an innovative and compassionate leader who has been recognized for his ability to educate youth and adult professionals on various topics. Colber is an experienced facilitator that has led a plethora of presentations and workshops. He has done extensive research on issues of inclusion, social justice, organizational change, middle management and higher education. He has also provided trainings in coalition building, substance abuse prevention and organizational development around the world in places such as Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Cape Town, South Africa, Nairobi, Kenya and several more. His extensive background in strategic planning and implementation has made him an asset to various higher educational institutions and non-profit organizations. Finally, Colber teaches at the University of the District of Columbia where his research is being used to increase student engagement. We're in the home stretch of Election 42. Just a little under three weeks to go. We're not running out of things to talk about yet. Far from it. On today's show — 1. We hear from Amara Possian of LeadNow about their campaign Vote Together. It helps us figure out who we should vote for to get rid of Stephen Harper. Especially in the swing ridings where a Conservative upset is a possibility. 2. And you know how Stephen Harper is always going on about how he's the best manager of the economy? The Conservative government's reliance on austerity and trickle-down economics has led to the most poorly-performing Canadian economy since the Second World War, according to Jim Stanford. He's co-author of the recent report, “Rhetoric and Reality: Evaluating Canada's Economic Record Under the Harper Government.” Jim Stanford is an economist with Unifor. He spoke with Redeye host Jane Williams. 3. And finally, remember that Harperman song that everybody was singing a couple of weeks ago? You heard the song .. now … The Movie! When Ottawa civil servant and folk singer Tony Turner created his now wildly popular singalong Harperman, he didn't anticipate getting suspended from his job. Since then, the song has spread. Harperman singalongs happened in over 40 communities across Canada on September 17. And people are still singing it. And now, there's not just a song. There's a documentary in the works — two versions — a short one which is planned for release two days before the election. And a longer, full 90-minute piece which will explore some of the larger themes. Cody Lanktree and his company HamiltonSeen is doing the documentary. He talked to me enroute to a shoot in Ottawa this week. Photo: Sean Connors/flickr
The Toronto Water Doc Festival is coming up soon, so this week we talked to Melanie Howe the Water Docs Programmer right off the bat about some of the films and other screenings happening over the next couple weeks. The festival opens with a (free) screening of the powerful 2014 documentary 'Monsoon' by Canadian writer and director Sturla Gunnarsson. After the second break, we speak to Sturla himself about making the documentary and his time in India. Finally, Stefan attempts to bring us some good news to talk about this week, and Kevin and Daryn do their best to ruin his fun with concerns. :D And of course a reminder that if you are in Toronto (or not) our friends over at LeadNow have organized a rally regarding bill C-51 as well as a petition and some other information you should read about the implications of the bill.
