This episode is an unusual one as I'm joined by three different guests. We are getting a different perspective on grief as we wade into the messy complexity of interacting with someone deep into grief and being the person in grief who is trying to field all those interactions. These three people have experienced grief in losing someone very close to them. I ask them the same questions about what people said and did that were helpful gestures AND those that were not helpful, along with what they wish people would have done and said. Their varying answers are insightful and revealing, helping us to understand that there is no one right answer to navigating grief. Being human is complex and messy, and there is no better example of that than when grief and loss slam into our lives. Join us to hear the different perspectives on grief from my friends, Shayna, Rachel, and Portia. *Sensitivity warning: We are talking about death in this episode, so be aware that our specific topics are infant death, spousal death, and the death of a close friend. Show Highlights: ● My first guest, Portia Burch: ○ How she lost her close friend, Tish, unexpectedly, around the same time as another meaningful loss in her life ○ The value of those who “bear witness” to our loss ○ How Portia responds to those who ask, “What do you need? What can I do for you?” ○ Why Portia wanted people to let her be, act normal around her, and not expect too much from her ○ Why it's good to ask someone how they would like for us to proceed as they deal with a loss ○ How we can rephrase our questions into statements and listen to context clues to better follow up with someone during grief ○ Things people say that are not helpful during grief: comments like “this will get easier,” and “she's in a better place” ○ What it really means to comfort someone ○ What we should talk more about the joy of a person's life instead the fact that someone is gone ○ Why Portia says, “Grief is what we feel when our love has no place to go.” ● My next guest, Rachel: ○ How she lost her husband, Jim, in 2017, just before Father's Day ○ How Rachel responds to those who ask, “What do you need? What can I do for you?” ○ How Rachel thought of grief and the people in proximity to it as ripples on a pond ○ Ways in which people were actually helpful with tangible support and care ○ Why Rachel vigilantly safeguarded how her husband's death was explained to her kids ○ Rachel's take on what to say and do to help someone experiencing acute grief ● My next guest, Shayna Raphael: ○ How she lost her daughter, Claire, eight years ago as an infant ○ How Shayna responds to those who ask, “What do you need? What can I do for you?” ○ What people did for Shayna and her family that were helpful actions ○ Things people did or said that were NOT helpful: comments about religion, closure, “a better place,” etc. ○ Why it isn't helpful when people try to force comfort on a grieving person ○ Why those who show up and “enter into the messiness” are comforting ○ How Shayna found help and support through a Facebook group ○ Why Shayna and her husband founded the Claire Bear Foundation to provide safe sleep spaces to families across the US Resources and Links: Connect with our guests: The Claire Bear Foundation Connect with KC: Website, TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook Get KC's book, How to Keep House While Drowning We love the sponsors that make this show possible! Scrutinizing the movements of the mind and the heart is never an easy thing to do. In fact we find ever more clever ways to avoid doing so. Truthful living, a willingness to acknowledge one's failings and communicate them to a spiritual guide is put before for us by the fathers as a path that we should desire. It is not meant to punish us or to humiliate us, but rather to free us in our capacity to love God and to give ourselves to Him. We see in this hypothesis how deep this kind of observation penetrates into the thoughts and actions of an individual. Spiritual fathers have the responsibility to aid their children and help them to internalize this process and to ask themselves honestly whether they love and desire Christ above all things. How often and how easily we are moved by our own self-will. We can drag our feet when it comes to doing something that we to which we have an aversion or where we feel that we have something to do that is more important or pressing. It is far more difficult to allow ourselves to be moved by the Spirit of Love. The greatest acts of love are often those that go unnoticed or are rooted in the fulfillment of the simplest of duties. To take up responsibility without grumbling or to respond with immediacy to the need of another is what God sees and values. --- Text of chat during the group: 00:25:30 Anthony: One can take this passage and read it into the early chapters of the Acts of the Apostles. Was it a kind of monastic community, and Ananias and Sapphira tries to enter the community but remain in the world, holding some of their own possessions? 00:31:34 Rachel: How old were the Apostles when Christ called them? 00:46:38 Anthony: "They" say you die as you have lived. I suppose then that Jesus' "Into Thy hands I commend My spirit." indicates He perfected this emptiness of self as He lived. 00:53:26 Eric Ewanco: "Grasps another's hand ostentatiously"? What does that mean? 01:23:34 Rachel: The fact that they scrutenize is consoling 01:24:23 Rachel: Thank you!

After laying some groundwork in the previous weeks we finally stepped in to the meat, as it were, of John‘s writing. We took up once again Step number One “on renunciation”. John moves very quickly to lay out before us the reasons why one would embrace the renunciation not only of the monks in the desert but of the ascetical life as a whole. The two fundamental reasons are the multitude of our sins and the love of God. The beginning of the spiritual life most often is the simple acknowledgment of our poverty and the infirmity that sin brings into our life. We see the emptiness of this life outside of our relationship with God. The acknowledgment of this truth bears the fruit of repentance; a fundamental turning toward God with streams of tears and heartfelt groanings that reflect an interior reality. It is then that God, as he did with Lazarus, orders that the stone be rolled away from the tomb and that we be unloosed from the passions that hold us in their grip. Yet, John would not have us see this as a path that we take in isolation. It is always to be trod with a guide or a director, a Moses figure. We need those who can help bring about the healing of the passions of the soul by their care as physicians. We need to be guided by those who have lived a life equal to the angels; that is, who have been freed from the corruption of their wounds and so have become experts and the most skilled physicians/surgeons. We do not live our Christian life out in isolation but only in communion with others and strengthened by those who have been transformed by the grace of God and the ascetical life. This life, John tells us in an unvarnished way, requires violence and constant suffering; a dying to self and sin in order that our hearts might attain to the love of God and the love of chastity and all of the other virtues. There will be great toil in this battle and the false-self, that kitchen dog addicted to barking, John tells us, is only overcome by the one who becomes a lover of chastity and watchfulness. The foundation of this journey is the courage to offer our souls to God in our infirmity, the faith to trust in Him, and the humility that we might bare all before his healing light of His Grace. --- Text of chat during the group: 00:11:31 Cindy Moran: What version of the book is being used? 00:15:58 Anthony: copyright 1979 Holy Transfiguration Monastery 00:18:01 Fr. Thank you to everyone who participated in tonight's group on St. Theophan's Letters on the Spiritual Life to Anastasia. Great conversation as always. Synopsis: Tonight we read letter 74 entitled “Yearning for the monastic life”. Anastasia has made a decision to enter the monastery; she has decided to give herself over completely to God in mind and body. And yet, Theophan senses within her a kind of urgency that is pressing her forward and making her want to rush the moment of her entrance. He wants her, however, to pray and wait with patience. He does not want her to enter the religious life in a willful fashion precisely because she's entering in order to set aside her will in the spirit of obedience. Thus, she should strive to let God act in her life and open the door for her to enter in the time He desires. For the moment she is to focus upon embracing the life of a monastic at home; deepening her spiritual life, living in obedience to her parents, making herself a novice in relationship to all of her siblings. She is to be, as it were, a soldier in training; humbling herself and preparing herself for the rigors of the religious life. Such waiting takes nothing from her. In fact it serves her by allowing her to mature emotionally and spiritually precisely that she might endure in her vocation. He reminds her of the history behind such a vocation. In the beginning monasteries did not exist - nor vows. What existed were men and women filled with a desire and yearning for God and it is this spirit that she must foster. She must enflame the desire for God within her own heart by being faithful in the moment. She must wait and adapt her life and her habits to those in the monastery. But most of all she must wait upon the Lord who says “Come follow Me”! --- Text of chat during the group: 00:06:26 Rachel: How do I get a snazzy picture like that?? 00:19:23 Anthony: And some people had her religious desire, but God (I suppose) chose them never to enter a community, such as Benedict Labre or the Pilgrim of the Russian classic. 00:28:05 Edward Kleinguetl: "Gentle, organic approach" -- love it! 00:31:20 Anthony: FYI under the Lombard Laws of the 600's to about 800s or so, Vowed and nonvowed persons living a religious life were both recognized as having special protection against violation by criminals. One living the life but not vowed as treated as or just about as at the state of a religious person. 00:38:09 Anthony: "The Ancient Path" is Talbot's book about his community 01:14:26 Wayne Mackenzie: got to go see you monday 01:16:24 Anthony: We in the West are sometimes formed by a relatively small cadre of Western Catholics, too....and that is magnified by the psychologies of certain persons who choose messages to magnify to the rest of us. 01:17:11 Rachel: I do have to say that put here in California, I am blessed with a wonderful grace filled parish.

Through a mutual friend, Jill Devine was introduced to Brandon Janous. Brandon lost his wife, Rachel, to breast cancer on March 1st, 2020. With the one-year anniversary of her death approaching, Jill invited Brandon on the podcast to share Rachel's story because as he describes in the episode, "there's beauty in the brokenness". To gain a little insight on who Rachel was, here's some information from her obituary: Rachel excelled in everything that she attempted. But it was dance that captured her heart. From the time that she could walk to the time that she could walk no more, she danced. She danced everywhere she went and never in her life had trouble finding a dance partner. Rachel attended the University of Nebraska (Go Big Red), where she not only danced on the sidelines of every football and basketball game as a Scarlet, but she also excelled in the classroom. It was here, in Lincoln, Nebraska, where Rachel would meet the love of her life (though she didn’t know it at the time.) He knew it. It just took her a bit longer to be convinced. His name was Brandon Janous, and because of a silly flag football tournament, their love story began. Brandon was introduced to Rachel through some of her High School friends (Go Oak Park) on a weekend trip he and his buddies took to Lincoln from the University of Missouri (MIZ). On March 13, 2010, Rachel and Brandon said their “I do’s” and began what they would consider the greatest love story ever told. The first of their 3 children, Hadley Mae, arrived just over a year after their wedding day, and for the next few years, Rachel would spend most of her time in maternity clothes. In 2012, they welcomed their second daughter, Cooper Grace, and in 2014 they got their boy, Macklin Lawrence, and became what is now known as The Janous 5. Rachel was an incredible nurse because she loved people so well. Rachel was an incredible mom because she loved her children so well. Rachel was an incredible friend because she loved her friends so well. Rachel was an incredible daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, cousin, sister-in-law, aunt, wife, and daughter-in-law because she just knew how to love everyone so well. Rachel was diagnosed with breast cancer. She was only 36 years old at the time. But she fought it hard, beat it and was in complete remission for about 7 months. In July of 2019, the cancer came back, and it came back with a vengeance. Down deep, Rachel had always felt that it would eventually come back, and she was prepared to battle it again. The problem was that this time, the cancer took over her entire body and before long, the doctors had exhausted all treatment options. Rachel could have easily given up and been angry for the hand she’d been dealt. But instead, she decided she’d do her best to change the world. And that’s exactly what she did. She taught us how to love people better. Not just when it’s convenient, but to love them through their ugly times and worst days and to love them well. She taught us that cancer is hard, but that everyone has their “hard.” And that you never know what someone is going through. You never know their struggle. You never know their pain. You never know where they have been or where they’re going. So to always be kind and to always love hard. She taught us that God is so dang good. And that while dying of cancer at 38 years old isn’t fun, dancing in heaven was going to be a blast! She taught us not to take moments for granted and that it’s the little moments that matter most. She taught us all how to hug better. She taught us that there is so much beauty in the brokenness. And that even in her final days, when she knew death was imminent, she was helping everyone around her heal. She was encouraging and equipping everyone for the next chapter. She was leading people, so many people, many that she’d never met, to know Jesus. If you didn’t have the chance to meet Rachel, you missed out. Just five minutes with her would have had a major impact on your life. Rachel's story is one every person should hear. Your perspective on life will change after hearing it. #LoveLikeRachel Instagram and Facebook: @brandonjanous Jill would like to acknowledge and recognize the hard work moms put in on the daily. It can be a thankless job at times, and Jill wants these moms to know their worth, so she created the Supermom Shoutout. This week’s Supermom Shoutout goes to Rachel. Jill Devine is nominating her on behalf of all who have loved and continue to love Rachel: How could I not make Rachel this week’s Supermom nomination? This is a woman who continues to touch lives, mine included. I can only imagine what it was like to be loved by Rachel. What a true gift from God! Every time I get sad thinking about Brandon and the kids, I try and relive the conversation he and I had about Rachel’s final days. In Rachel’s honor, we all need to love and love hard. Rachel - you will be forever seen and forever supported! To nominate a Supermom (or you can nominate yourself) email hello@jilldevine.com. This brand new episode has Erin and Rachel discussing our perspectives of situations. Our perspective, when something bad happens to us, can be that of negativity or blame. But when we flip the script and try to find the good in the situation we can have a more positive perspective. Erin says that a person's perspective may be a learned behavior. That as we grow up, we learn from others around us on how to respond to situations and that those responses become conditioned. Rachel likes to think that situations are happening for her, not to her. She noticed, in the past, when she thought things were happening to her that someone else was always to blame. It was never her fault. She came to realize that she was the common denominator in those situations, so she shifted her perspective to one of growth and positivity. In the end, the girls agree that we need to be self-aware when it comes to perspectives. We need to look at the situation, respond appropriately, use it as empowerment, and reflect on the past for growth. Here are some highlights: What road rage has to do with our perspective Erin's mental shift when looking back at her network marketing days How heartbreak brought Rachel to where she is today Self-awareness is a game-changer Let's take a listen! Episode two of the second season of Free the Seed! the Open Source Seed Initiative podcast This podcast is for anyone interested in the plants we eat – farmers, gardeners and food curious folks who want to dig deeper into where their food comes from. It’s about how new crop varieties make it into your seed catalogues and onto your tables. In each episode, we hear the story of a variety that has been pledged as open-source from the plant breeder that developed it. In this episode, host Rachel Hultengren spoke with Joseph Lofthouse about his process of landrace breeding to develop varieties locally-adapted to the harsh conditions of his farm in northern Utah, and about the 'Lofthouse-Oliverson Landrace Muskmelon', a variety that came out of that breeding work. Joseph Lofthouse Episode links Find seeds of 'Lofthouse-Oliverson Landrace Muskmelon' on Joseph's website. Free the Seed! Listener Survey: http://bit.ly/FreetheSeedsurvey ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Free the Seed! Transcript for S2E2: ‘Lofthouse-Oliverson Landrace Melon’ Rachel Hultengren: Welcome to episode two of the second season of Free the Seed!, the Open Source Seed Initiative podcast that tells the stories of new crop varieties and the plant breeders that develop them. I’m your host, Rachel Hultengren. Every episode we invite a plant breeder to tell us about a crop variety that they’ve pledged to be open-source. My guest today is Joseph Lofthouse. Joseph farms in Northern Utah, where harsh growing conditions can make farming a challenge. We talk about how he has addressed this challenge through his plant breeding work, and Joseph describes ‘landrace breeding’, the process by which he develops genetically-diverse crop varieties that are particularly suited to his farm. Rachel: Hi Joseph – welcome to Free the Seed! Joseph Lofthouse: Hi! Thank you, Rachel and food-curious folks. Rachel: So I’d like to start by painting a picture for listeners of your farm in Utah and the conditions there. Where in Utah are you, and what’s the weather like through the growing season? Joseph: So I am in northern Utah, in Cache Valley, in a village called Paradise. And my growing conditions during the summer are desert conditions with intense sunlight in the daytime and intense radiant cooling at night. Super-low humidity, and I irrigate once a week. Rachel: And how long have you been farming there? Joseph: My family’s been growing in the same farm for 150 years, and I’ve been doing that my whole life as well, except for when I went away to the big city to work for a career, and then I came back home. Rachel: I understand that when you came back home, you found that the conditions that you were growing in, it limited what you were able to grow. I’m curious - what did you try that at first just wasn’t successful? Joseph: So a lot of crops, if I just buy something out of a seed catalogue, about half the varieties I buy that way will just plain old fail. And some things, like cantaloupe or watermelon, might be like 95% failures. Some things like turnips – any turnip that I plant is going to do well here. But the longer season crops, or the warmer weather crops, are hit-or-miss. Rachel: What are the aspects of your growing area that are the hardest for crops to tolerate? Joseph: Well, for warm- weather crops, it’s the radiant cooling at night. And for leafy greens, it’s the low humidity, because we might have 5% humidity in the evenings. And that leads to bitter lettuce and bitter spinach and bitter kale. Rachel: How cold does it get, with that radiant cooling at night? Joseph: We have about, sometimes, a 40 degree temperature change between the highs in the day and the lows at night. And the radiant cooling on the surface of the leaf, probably adds another- or subtracts another 10 degrees from that. Rachel: So that can get pretty chilly for a warm...
