Money is energy. The secret to manifesting is to imagine having what you desire "as if" it is already yours, and fully believing it is yours, and "acting as if" it is already yours. It is yours without question, and you fully deserve it, because you are deserving. As you imagine it being yours, feel the feelings of it being yours. Just because it hasn't shown up in physical form yet, does not mean it is not on its way. Get it? This episode kicks off Season 3 of Plantfull Life with a salty chat with CEO and founder Samantha Skyring of Oryx Desert Salt, and what a perfect way to shift into more of a focus on the pleasure of food by adding a pinch of salt to this podcast. This episode, I'm speaking with John Rushton, co-founder of Vegums. Does a plant-based vegan diet work for long-term health and wellness? Why do some people give up veganism or vegetarianism and go back to eating meat? Well, it may have to do with their genetics and need for proper nutritional supplements. UK-based biomedical scientist Bradley Jadir, founder of Vegan Powah, remained vegan after becoming a living kidney donor in 2018. Even though he struggled with his energy levels after donating, he continued to eat plant-based vegan foods. But most of his long-term vegan friends went back to eating meat due to health and energy issues, including doctors at medical school, which prompted him to employ his background in Biomedical Science to research all the medical literature he could find relevant to vegan nutrition, and ultimately how genetics affects a vegan diet. This led to the development of ‘Vegan Powah,' a supplement designed to help people maintain veganism in the long run. Eating more plants is the best thing we can do for our health. But it's not as basic as getting all the nutrition we need from fruits and veggies. There is no one-size-fits-all plant-based diet. My guests Ellie Busby (Vojo Health) and Bradley Jafir (Vegan Powah) join me in this episode to discuss the complex factors of nutrition and living a plant-based lifestyle according to our own individual genetic needs. About my guests: Ellie Busby of Vojo Health: Ellie went plant-based in 2011 after living in a Buddhist monastery. For the first few years everything was great. But 5 years in, her health started falling apart. Ellie was doing everything “right”. But it wasn't working. She was fatigued, had brain fog, and her hair was falling out. She was suffering from joint pain, running injuries and struggling more than ever with weight fluctuations. She realised she had a choice – give up, or make it work. Well, she's too stubborn to give up. So she went back to university to research precision nutrition. What she discovered was mind-blowing. Ellie researched how genetics affect our health, and analysed her own and her family's genes. Her genes explained everything – from weight and health struggles to diabetes and dementia in her family. Vojo was founded by Ellie Busby, a published scientist and nutritionist (MSc) in the UK registered with the British Association of Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine (BANT, CMA approved). She's been plant-based for 10 years, founded a vegan restaurant in 2014, and founded Vojo as a solo female founder in 2020. Bradley Jafir of Vegan Powah: Vegan Powah is a supplement that provides vegans with nutrients that are hard to find or absent on a vegan diet. They have been carefully selected by biomedical scientists and nutritionists with the intention of enhancing the health effects of a vegan diet and preventing nutritional deficiencies in vegans with a range of different genetics. My own Vojo Health DNA analysis revealed that I carry the G6PD deficiency, which is form of anemia. G6PD deficiency is a common genetic condition caused by defects in an enzyme called glucose-6- phosphate dehydrogenase, or G6PD. The G6PD enzyme helps protect red blood cells from damage. In people with G6PD deficiency, red blood cells are destroyed upon exposure to certain environmental triggers, which can lead to episodes of anemia. This test includes two common variants linked to G6PD deficiency. I have both of the genetic variants tested that are associated with an increased genetic risk of anaemia caused by G6PD deficiency. About 400 million people have the condition globally. Most of the time, those who are affected have no symptoms. Following a specific trigger, symptoms such as yellowish skin, dark urine, shortness of breath, and feeling tired may develop. Red blood cell breakdown may be triggered by infections, certain medication, stress, or foods such as fava beans. (Ohhh, I love fava beans.) Well, I learned that due to this genetic G6PD deficiency, as well as other genetic factors, my Vojo plant-based diet type is best matched with the South American type. Hey, I'm not South American. I'm genetically Scottish-Irish and Italian, with some Nordic ancestors like Ingvar "The Tall King of Sweden" Eyesteinsson, so you'd think my dietary type might be good with a Nordic type diet. And my Italian genetics might seem best to match with a Mediterranean diet as an ideal plant-based diet as well (mm, pizza al pomodoro!). You'd think oatmeal and soda bread and berries and almond biscotti is just perfect for me. Sam Turnbull NEVER in a million years thought she would ever become vegan. She grew up in a family of foodies: chefs, butchers, and hunters (yes, it's true). Her household had a flock of chickens (both for eggs and for eating), the freezers were stocked full of meat, steaks were cooked rare, and there were even real animal heads decorating the walls (not that she ever liked the heads). Raydel Hernández is an ex-meat eater who shares vegan Cuban dishes based on his Abuela's authentic family recipes. His new book "It's Delicious, it's Vegan, it's Cuban" is rich with recipe content in a heartfelt no-frills way. A first-generation Cuban-American, Ray was suffering from chronic gout. A doctor told him that his condition was a warning sign of heart disease. In this episode, Ray shares his health scare, which inspired him to try eating a plant-based diet. Weight gain after menopause is something many women struggle to lose. After an early onset of menopause at age 40, middle-age spread blew my body up like an inflatable. My arms felt like I was wearing floaties. The baby belly aka "pizza dough" around my middle from 3 pregnancies made me look perpetually pregnant. I did all the things: intense boot camp workouts, barre classes, spinning, biking, CrossFit training, running, squats, hot yoga, a raw vegan diet, matcha lattes. Short of snorting lines of green coffee beans, I'd do anything to get back into my 30-year-old body. Then one day, I fit into my teenage daughter's jean shorts. How did I lose 30 pounds after menopause? In this episode, I share the lifestyle and dietary changes I made that helped me lose weight and feel younger. Now at age 50 I'm looking and feeling like a hot young thing!
