This week on Multipolarity, something a bit different. We want to map the DC brain, from the inside. Somewhere, inside the Washington Beltway, are a bunch of very smart people who often think alike. Be they at the State Department, the Pentagon, CIA, other parts of the Federal government, or think tanks, they have been tasked with projecting the global power of the world's greatest empire. They make the decisions. Someone has to. And just as France has its Enarques. Or China has its unique mandarin examinations, the Foreign Policy bureaucracy of America have a common culture, a particular education, and a singular mindset. Yet it is so common, so super-dominant in our Western world, we seldom think to question its priors. This week, we're lucky to be joined by the very model of the modern wonk-general. Carlos Roa. A Contributing Editor at The National Interest, he was formerly the Executive Editor of the publication. He was Associate Editor of Horizons: Journal of International Relations and Sustainable Development and an analyst at the Center for International Relations and Sustainable Development. He knows DC from many different vantage points. We wanted to use his experience of being an insider to chart the anthropology of the Washington Deep State. To talk about what it is to be part of the Washington power elite - how you get started. What schools you go to. What parties you go to. Who you meet and the fundaments of the shared world view they regurgitate to each other. This episode is a Rake's Progress, if you will. How To Get Ahead In DC, who you ned to step on, who you step round, to get to the top of the totem pole.***For the full expanded edition, 90 minutes with Carlos, get us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/posts/94647483

Sometimes Jay indulges in hyperbole—but the hyperbole is not far off. In this episode, he calls Dawn Upshaw's 1989 recording of “No word from Tom” (Stravinsky) “just about the best thing ever.” You may well agree. He begins the episode with another “just about the best thing ever”: Leontyne Price in “Summertime” (Gershwin), live in Munich, 1968. Also on the menu are Mozart, Bridge, Medtner, and Szymanowski. A winning line-up. Prompters: Ever wonder what was going on behind that wooden hood at the edge of the stage? That little box is the domain of the prompter, a musician who does much more than help performers remember their lines. Conductor and pianist Robert Mollicone demystifies the art of opera prompting and describes the responsibilities that go with sitting in the best seat in the house (producer: Jody Gage). Opera on the Road: San Francisco Opera has a distinguished history of touring outside of the Bay Area, moving personnel and productions from city to city by plane, train, bus and even dog sled. Mezzo-soprano Dolora Zajick, a tour veteran from her days as a young artist with the San Francisco Opera Center, adds her perspective to this chronicle about taking the show on the road (producers: Jeffery McMillan and Barbara Rominski). Supernumeraries: The dictionary defines the word ‘supernumerary' as a person or thing in excess of the normal or requisite number. In opera, though, supernumeraries are entirely necessary. Former San Francisco Opera Rehearsal and Facilities Manager Trey Costerisan relates how the Company casts supers and where he found stilt-walking jugglers when a production required them. Testimonials on the lure of the stage are offered by San Francisco Opera supers Helen Lew and Karsten Guthridge (producer: Katherine Baltrush). My First Opera: What was your first opera? That is the question that San Francisco Opera Music Librarian Michael Bragg asks his North Stage Door and Company colleagues. Whether it was La Bohème, Das Rheingold or The Rake's Progress, the responses reveal how first encounters with opera inspired awe, curiosity, love and, eventually, careers in the field (producer: Michael Bragg).

He has appeared in The Barber of Seville, La Boheme, I Pagliacci, La Traviata, Don Giovanni, Madama Butterfly, to name a few. In this conversation, we discuss Martin Ng's journey as an opera singer. Instead of a straight path to singing, he started as an attorney early on. However, his zeal and passion for opera soon overtook his desire to practice law. So he set out for a one-year stay in Italy to learn the language and take some voice lessons. One year turned into twelve. And the law practice is now a distant past. Then life took another turn. Martin packed up and moved back to Singapore in 2017. This decision was based on an issue near and dear to Martin's heart: the development of the Italian opera in Asia. During the quarantine, it became clear; the Asian Opera Companies could now produce successful productions utilizing all Asian cast. This has a profound implication for the future of opera in Asia. Russian composer Igor Stravinsky died 50 years ago this year. Yet his influence is still felt today, whether it's the pounding rhythms of The Rite of Spring or the musical borrowings of The Rake's Progress. Radio 3's Kate Molleson explains how Stravinsky changed the musical landscape, and just why we should be celebrating a composer born nearly 140 years ago. Aurora Orchestra are preparing for their appearance at this year's BBC Proms. And the preparations involve memorising The Firebird, to play on stage without sheet music. Conductor Nicholas Collon and bassoonist Amy Harman discuss what memorising adds to the performance, and whether learning Stravinsky has any extra challenges. Dancer Francesca Velicu earned an Olivier Award for dancing the role of the Chosen One in Pina Bausch's version of The Rite of Spring at English National Ballet. How does it feel to dance to the death? Conductor Sir Simon Rattle has had a lifelong love affair with Igor Stravinsky. English artist William Hogarth's paintings were so detailed and clever they could be read like books. The Rake's Progress series of 8 pictures show the ultimate destination of a reckless life - the Bedlam madhouse in London. Just in case anyone was unclear each picture was accompanied by a poem capturing perfectly just how awful that destination was. Great painting met great writing and Thomas Rakewell's life remains a classic work to this day.

Since our last episode was a NinS installment, the most natural progression is to follow it with a SinN episode, and we've got a great one this week. Sometimes it takes time for art to inspire a composer, and this pairing was worth the two-century wait. In the mid-18th century, English painter William Hogarth created a series of 8 works entitled, A Rake's Progress; and not until the middle of the 20th century did Russian composer Igor Stravinsky write an opera inspired by that very series. We're very excited for this combination, and we hope you enjoy it as much as we did!   Art:  William Hogarth (1697-1764): A Rake's Progress (1732-34)  Music:  Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971): The Rake's Progress (1951)   Listen to the great selections from Stravinsky's opera in this week's Spotify playlist!   Follow us on Instagram and Facebook to stay up-to-date with everything we're doing!  Visit our Patreon page to see how you can support us!  Email us any time! notesandstrokespodcast@gmail.com

Almost three hundred years ago, the English artist William Hogarth created a series of paintings called A Rake’s Progress, which tell the tragic story of a man whose life spirals out of control after inheriting an unexpected fortune. He leaves behind a fiancée, and it is her story of devotion that reverberates through Igor Stravinsky’s opera The Rake’s Progress and the aria “No Word from Tom.”  In this episode, you’ll visit with Hogarth’s paintings, hear how Stravinsky captured the undying loyalty of the forgotten lover and get an inside look at how unexpected fortune and fame upended the family of Vivian Liberto and Johnny Cash. Yes, that Johnny Cash. And, yes, in this podcast about Igor Stravinsky.  And here’s the best part: the incomparable Dawn Upshaw will sing it for you from the stage of the Metropolitan Opera. The Guests: Soprano Dawn Upshaw has performed The Rake’s Progress many times and says that some of her happiest moments on an opera stage were when she was singing the role of the devoted fiancée, Anne Trulove. Tara Cash is the youngest daughter of Johnny Cash and his first wife, Vivian Liberto. When she was growing up, everyone always wanted to hear about her father’s life. Now, she welcomes the opportunity to share her mother’s side of the story.   Joanna Tinworth is the Curator at Sir John Soane’s Museum in London, where the original paintings, A Rake’s Progress by William Hogarth, have resided for nearly 200 years. Hogarth’s paintings are among the museum’s most popular exhibits. Michael Bragg is the Music Planning Associate and Librarian at San Francisco Opera. He gives lectures and talks about opera around the Bay area, and he loves Stravinsky because of the composer’s unique approach to blending old and new styles of music.  Below is the first painting in Hogarth's series A Rake's Progress, entitled "The Heir." You can see the complete set of paintings here, courtesy of Sir John Soane's Museum. William Hogarth, "The Heir," from "A Rake's Progress" series, the inspiration for Stravinsky's opera. On this episode, I talk to my friend Kristina (she/her) about Stravinsky's English language opera The Rake's Progress. It's the story of one man's path from naive country man to disillusioned urbanite to doomed soul and all the people pulling him between good and bad along the way. Get ready for some fairy tale names and silly plot points. Afterwards, we discuss the city (and our home of Berlin) as a place to live outside societal norms and how opera prioritizes relatability over realism.  Let me know what you watch by connecting with me on social media: On Instagram @opera.apero and on Twitter @OperaApero. Oliver Twist - Charles Dickens - Book 2, Part 2 Title: Oliver Twist Overview: Oliver Twist; or, the Parish Boy's Progress, Charles Dickens's second novel, was published as a serial from 1837 to 1839, and as a three-volume book in 1838. Born in a workhouse, the orphan Oliver Twist is sold into apprenticeship with an undertaker. After escaping, Oliver travels to London, where he meets the "Artful Dodger", a member of a gang of juvenile pickpockets led by the elderly criminal Fagin. Oliver Twist unromantically portrays the sordid lives of criminals and exposes the cruel treatment of the many orphans in London in the mid-19th century. The alternative title, The Parish Boy's Progress, alludes to Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress, as well as the 18th-century caricature series by painter William Hogarth, A Rake's Progress, and A Harlot's Progress. In an early example of the social novel, Dickens satirizes child labor, domestic violence, the recruitment of children as criminals, and the presence of street children. The novel may have been inspired by the story of Robert Blincoe, an orphan whose account of working as a child laborer in a cotton mill was widely read in the 1830s. It is likely that Dickens's own experiences as a youth contributed as well. Oliver Twist has been the subject of numerous adaptations, including a highly successful musical, Oliver!, the multiple Academy Award-winning 1968 motion picture, and Disney's animated film Oliver & Company in 1988.
