In today's Daily Fix: New details on the much-hyped PlayStation 5 Pro have leaked, including a likely design sketch and what the console might actually be called (bet you can't guess what it is). No other details, like price or release date, have been revealed, but hopefully this means an official announcement is imminent. In other news, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 has a new voice chat feature: you can now chat with your human shields. So if you're sneaky enough to grab someone and use them them as your personal bullet protector, you can now have a nice friendly chat before they inevitably get killed from friendly fire. And finally, the ambitious MMO from Bandai Namco and Amazon Games, Blue Protocol, is being shut down. It likely won't be the last live service game to fall victim to a crowded market.

Avec un chiffre d'affaires qui atteint plus de 200 milliards par an et une audience de plus de 3,6 milliards de joueurs, le jeu vidéo est de loin la première industrie culturelle du monde. Et pourtant, entre durcissement de la régulation, présence ambitieuse des Big Tech et vagues de licenciements, le tableau n'est plus si idyllique…Il est certain qu'en regardant les chiffres, cela donne le vertige. « Il y a 3,6 milliards de joueurs, soit 40 % de la population mondiale, le temps de jeu moyen quotidien est à 1h45… », pose d'emblée Guillaume Monteux. Le président de Gadsme, spécialiste de la publicité dans les jeux vidéo, a forcément beaucoup d'arguments pour appuyer l'idée d'une industrie vidéoludique assise à la même table que le cinéma ou la musique : « c'est de loin la première industrie culturelle au monde ». Pas mal quand on sait que le jeu vidéo est né près d'un siècle après le 7ᵉ Art…Crise, ou simple transition du jeu vidéo ?Mais pour le publicitaire, même si le jeu vidéo continue de mobiliser plus d'utilisateurs que Facebook et TikTok réunis, « depuis 8-10 mois, l'industrie avance avec prudence ». Arrivée du Digital Markets Act, ambitions croissantes de géants de la tech comme Apple, Google ou Microsoft -qui s'est récemment offert Activision Blizzard-, et surtout une vague de licenciements sans précédent chez Unity, Amazon Games ou encore Electronic Arts… Les nuages se sont accumulés à l'horizon. Même « la plateforme Twitch va encore licencier 500 personnes » précise Guillaume Monteux. À l'entendre, le ralentissement était prévisible, car « s'il y a un intérêt toujours plus grand pour les jeux vidéo, la rentabilité n'est pas au rendez-vous ». Le COVID a contribué à ébranler le modèle économique, mais il n'est pas le seul responsable. « Aujourd'hui, toutes les entreprises du secteur vont chercher à être profitables, à faire de la marge, alors qu'il y a 2-3 ans, elles cherchaient à conquérir des parts de marché, à faire du chiffre d'affaires, même à pertes ». Un exemple ? « En 2024, Nintendo va continuer à vendre une console, la Switch, qui est sur le marché depuis 2017, question marge, c'est formidable ». Un exemple que pourrait avoir envie de suivre Sony avec sa Playstation 5, sorti en 2020 et déjà vendue à 50 millions d'unités.De la révolution free-to-play à la révolution multiplatformePour Jean-Baptiste Godinot, le jeu vidéo est tout simplement en train de vivre une période charnière, mais ce n'est pas la première selon le vice-président exécutif de Gameloft. « Il y a déjà eu un grand changement de business model, il y a une dizaine d'années, avec l'émergence des jeux free-to-play. Cela a principalement affecté le mobile (spécialité historique de Gameloft, ndlr), où les acteurs ont dû basculer d'un modèle premium -on paie, on télécharge le produit fini- vers un modèle « game as a service », et donc un jeu qui ne se termine jamais, avec des achats intégrés ». S'il a conscience que certains acteurs vont rester sur le carreau, Jean-Baptiste Godinot préfère porter le regard sur les opportunités avant les risques. « La révolution du free-to-play avait permis l'explosion du jeu vidéo et son adoption par des générations qui n'étaient pas forcément concernées jusque-là ». Maintenant que l'industrie a franchi le fossé entre les générations, la prochaine révolution associera, selon lui, technologie et modes de consommation : « le free-to-play continue d'exister, notamment sur les téléphones, mais émergent les modèles d'abonnement, et plus récemment celui du multiplateforme ». Netflix et Disney, par l'odeur du jeu vidéo alléchés… « Nous, chez Gameloft, on a été “mobile”, mais on veut se développer vers le PC et la console parce que le marché va tendre vers une érosion des frontières qui existaient », explique Jean-Baptiste Godinot. Preuve que le marché devrait continuer sa marche en avant, les gros poissons sont à l'affût, « comme Netflix, qui a beaucoup accéléré sur le sujet ces dernières années ». Guillaume Monteux de son côté, cite « Apple et Google, des géants discrets qui génèrent plus de chiffre d'affaires que Sony, dont on parle pourtant plus ». Mais il entrevoit également l'appétit de nouveaux acteurs d'envergure comme Disney, « qui vient d'investir 1,5 milliard de dollars dans la société Epic, qui édite Fortnite -70 millions de joueurs chaque mois- ou Rocket League, tout en produisant le moteur de jeu Real Engine. C'est un investissement énorme de Disney dans un acteur important et militant du secteur qui tente de casser le monopole d'Apple et Google ».
