“St. Jerome is best known for compiling the Latin edition of the Bible, called the Vulgate, and rightly so,” said David G. Bonagura, Jr., an adjunct professor of classical languages at St. Joseph's Seminary, New York, and adjunct professor of theology at Catholic Distance University. He serves as Religion Editor of The University Bookman, the flagship publication of the Russell Kirk Center. He is the 2023-2024 Cardinal Newman Society Fellow for Eucharistic Education.  “He is also known for a famous quotation: ‘Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.' But there is more to St. Jerome than this. We have 123 of his letters, written in a style equivalent to the modern essay, on a variety of topics. His letters of consolation stand out as some of the greatest examples of Latin prose and of pastoral care." The book contains seven letters written by St. Jerome from the years 389–412. In addition to translating the letters, Mr. Bonagura wrote an extended introduction to St. Jerome's life, work, and thought. He also wrote a brief paragraph before each letter identifying the deceased, the bereaved, and the context. Birmingham is gearing up for the Commonwealth Games and faith communities across the West Midlands are involved in the preparations, including Ranjit and Manpreet from Wolverhampton Wrestling Club who will both be taking part in The Queen's Baton Relay. William speaks to them about Wolverhampton, wrestling and what it means to be a Sikh on the mat. Conservative party members are preparing to vote for their new leader and our next Prime Minister. As they decide between Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak, we discuss the candidates' religious hinterland and ask what bearing, if any, religious questions might have on the leadership race. The smash Netflix hit, Stranger Things, has just aired its fourth series. Some religious commentators say the success of Stranger Things is down to the fact that, at its heart, is the age-old battle between good and evil. In the latest series there seems to be no let up on the religious iconography. Culture writer Sophie Caledecott decodes some of the deeper, spiritual meanings at work in the series. Pope Francis flies to Canada this week where he's expected to apologise for the abuse of Indigenous children in church-run residential schools. William hears from Dark Cloud, who was adopted by a British family as a child after being forcibly taken in what is known as The Sixties Scoop. Joy Spearchief-Morris, Indigenous Black Canadian writer and advocate tells us the situation in Canada and the BBC's Religion Editor, Aleem Maqbool highlights what we can expect from the Papal visit. As East Africa faces the worst drought in 40 years, William speaks to Elizabeth Myendo, Tearfund's Disaster Management Lead for East and Southern Africa live from Nairobi with an account of the impact on people living in countries like Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia. The 15th Lambeth Conference is to be held in Canterbury from 26 July to 8 August. The bishops will issue affirmations and “calls” from the conference based on their discussions around mission, the environment, safe church, interfaith relations and Anglican identity but there are some notable absences. Church leaders from Rwanda, Nigeria and Uganda are boycotting the conference in protest at what they see as a liberalisation of teaching on human sexuality. The Archbishop of Cape Town, Dr Thabo Makgoba, is chair of the Lambeth design group and speaks to William Crawley about the boycott. And Daniel Mullhall, Ireland's ambassador to the United States, tells us about religion in James Joyce's Ulysses.

The Episcopal Bishop Michael Curry is the first African American to serve as presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church. He talks candidly about the soul of America, his hopes and fears post the Coronavirus pandemic, and his concerns about the what he calls a "pandemic of deep and entrenched racism". Until recently, Muslims in Sudan could be sentenced to death for converting to Christianity; even discussing other religions could lead to arrest. Former British Ambassador to Sudan, Dame Rosalind Marsden explains why the liberalisation of such laws in Sudan is a significant step in the country’s development towards a stable and peaceful future. In an exclusive interview with the Dean of Westminster Abbey, Dr David Hoyle, talks about the "breathtaking" loss of income the Abbey has incurred as a result of Coronavirus. Dr Hoyle tells the BBC's Religion Editor, Martin Bashir, the steps he might have to take in order to preserve one of the Nation's most historic buildings. Being a preeminent researcher and independent scholar did not leave time to pursue being the consummate businessman, and particular self-serving characters took advantage of this as an opportunity to exploit. Over the years, Jordan had a string of peculiar personalities come into his life, ostensibly offering help, only to find out later their true intent — take for themselves everything Jordan was trying to do. This caused Jordan severe economic harm, and made it very difficult for Jordan to obtain the necessities required to sustain life, let alone pay legal fees to defend his rights, but Jordan battled on for his name, image, and life's work, and now he continues with his research and work. Outgrowing Richard Dawkins: Rupert Shortt on the missionary of atheism

“Richard Dawkins is the most outstanding missionary of atheism in Britain today”, Hugh Montefiore wrote in the Church Times in 2005. The next year, Dawkins's The God Delusion was published. Now, Dawkins is taking aim at God again, with the publication of Outgrowing God: a Beginner's Guide, which his publishers say is aimed at “a new generation”. Rupert Shortt is the Religion Editor at The Times Literary Supplement, and the author of books including God is No Thing (Hurst) and Does Religion Do More Harm than Good? (SPCK), which he spoke about on this podcast in March. Rupert's new book is Outgrowing Dawkins: God for grown-ups, published by SPCK. It is not a point-by-point rebuttal of Dawkins's book, Shortt tells me. Instead, he says, he is trying “to demonstrate why Dawkins's arguments aren't nearly as coherent as he imagines, but also to say some positives about the coherence of religious belief from a philosophical standpoint but also its practical value.” Outgrowing Dawkins is available from the Church House Bookshop for £9. Should you make a promise you can’t keep? We reflect on the ethical issues thrown up by the week’s events in Parliament. Pope Francis has embarked on a 3 nation African tour. He’s visiting Mozambique, Madagascar and Mauritius. Martin Bashir, the BBC’s Religion Editor, has been travelling with the Pope. The historian Dan Jones has just written a new account of the era through the multiple perspectives of characters whose stories have seldom been heard. Much of the coverage of Robert Mugabe’s death has pondered on how a liberator became a tyrant. The answer is complex, as is the relationship between Christians in Zimbabwe and their former leader. And we have an in-depth investigation into the allegations of sexual and physical abuse against Sogyal Rinpoche. Producer: Louise Clarke-Rowbotham Rosie Dawson Editor: Amanda Hancox

Rural Northeastern Pennsylvania was a bucolic farming region in the 1800s—but political tensions churned below the surface. When a group of fugitive slaves dared to settle in the Underground Railroad village of Waverly, near Scranton, before the Civil War, they encountered a mix of support from abolitionists and animosity from white supremacists. Once the war came, 13 of Waverly’s black fathers and sons returned south, into the bowels of slavery, to fight for the Union. Their valor under fire helped to change many minds about blacks. "Embattled Freedom" lifts these 13 remarkable lives out of the shadows, while also shedding light on the racial politics and social codes they and their people endured in the divided North. The men had found a safe haven in Waverly, but like other people of color in the 1800s and early 1900s, their freedom was uneasy, their battle for respect never-ending. Jim Remsen is a journalist and author of two prior books, "The Intermarriage Handbook" (HarperCollins, 1988) and "Visions of Teaoga" (Sunbury, 2014). Since retiring as Religion Editor at the Philadelphia Inquirer, Jim has pursued his keen interest in history, with a focus on underappreciated aspects of our nation’s local histories. Being a native of Waverly, Pa., he is pleased to be bringing his old hometown’s remarkable black and abolitionist period to light.
