On Sunday, June 1st, 1980, Ted Turner pressed a button—and CNN went live, beaming 24/7 news into homes across America and changing the media landscape forever, while shrinking time and space forever. In this episode, we sent Julia Thompson to track down and interview people who were at CNN's Atlanta headquarters on day one. What follows is the story of a visionary who dared to build a 24-hour news network on a tight budget—in a world dominated by 30-minute broadcasts and networks spending over $100 million a year on their news. With his own money and a vow to stay on the air “until the world ends,” Ted Turner took on the giants. It's a modern-day David and Goliath tale—driven by technology, entertainment, risk, and pure tenacity. This is how CNN was born. This episode features interviews with: Richard Roth (CNN original. Covered Gulf War, Berlin Wall fall, Tiananmen Square protests, and more) John Huey (former Time Inc. Editor-in-Chief, Fortune Editor. WSJ journalist covering CNN's launch) Jack Lechner (TV/Film Producer. Professor. Multiple-Time Jeopardy! Winner) Steven Livingston (Author, The CNN Effect. Social media connects us to friends and family, and gives us an unprecedented window to the wider world. But how much do we really know about how social media, and the barons who run these platforms, shape our views and our communities? Former newspaper editor and current Meta advisor Alan Rusbridger sheds light on the question of whether social media is strengthening democracy – or strangling it. Social media is now an inextricable part of our lives. It provides many social goods: connection to friends and family; more touchpoints to the world previously available only via mass media. Yet the initial promise that social media might support democracy is souring, as increasing amounts of misinformation and disinformation flourish on these platforms. With distrust in both legacy media and social media on the rise, how do we stay informed and maintain a civil society? Alan Rusbridger is deeply interested in this question. Long-time editor-in-chief of The Guardian UK and current editor of Prospect Magazine, his achievements span traditional print media as well as The Guardian’s transition to a digital-first newspaper. A supporter of social media from its earliest days, Alan also serves on Meta’s Advisory Group. On a recent visit to Australia, Alan discussed nothing less than media and the future of democracy with Mark Scott in a live event at the University of Sydney. +++ The Solutionists is podcast from the University of Sydney, produced by Deadset Studios. Go to where your audience is and make the offers there. So if you're going to master one media for traffic, that means that you choose one way and use all of the other media to support the one. Why? Because most of us are all over the place. We are running a Facebook group, we are recruiting affiliates, we're on YouTube, we're on LinkedIn, and we're doing a little bit of everything. So even if what you're doing is you're prospecting, you're going out and you're cold calling and networking the real world, you've got to kind of decide to master and hone in on one media platform and then let your media support one source of traffic. Jake BrennanTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Jake Brennan. You probably know Jake as the creator and host of the immensley popular Disgraceland podcast; but you are about to learn a bit more about him! In this episode, we chat about Jake growing up in Clinton, Mass. in the burgeoning punk / hardcore scene. We talk about his early musician days with Cast Iron Hike, and Bodega Girls, and what led him in the direction of music in the first place. One of Jake's bands even opened up for The Mighty Mighty Bosstones at a Hometown Throwdown! We talk about Victory Records, Island Records, Def Jam Records, and even how George H.W. Bush and the C.I.A. are connected to Bob Marley. We touch on Helter Skelter and Chaos by Tom O'Neill, and how those two stories helped inspire Disgraceland. I get Jake to explain exactly what the hell a MELLOTRON is, and why he decided to rely on it for the opening of his music-based true crime podcast. Then we get into his years with Bodega Girls, and how that came about; before he lets me play my favorite song of theirs (Surf's Up America). Jake explains the origin story of Disgraceland, and we touch on some of my favorite episodes, featuring: Jerry Lee Lewis, Jim Morrison, Bob Marley, and John Denver. I pry into how Double Elvis Media unfolded, and we talk about a few of the podcasts under that banner. Obviously, I have to know all about the April Fool's Day fiasco, and when we can look forward to another one. Super big thanks to Jake for sitting down with me and sharing the details on some of the things that work, and some that don't; when trying to capture the attention of new listeners, plus, what one can expect by being an ALL ACCESS supporter. Be sure to check out Disgraceland, and some of the other Double Elvis pods, including: Badlands, Blood on the Tracks, and The 27 Club.
The future of media is in great hands! Alyssa is joined by Gutes Guterman, co-founder of The Drunken Canal (RIP) and Byline, to discuss the scrappy newspaper operation that started as a bit, infiltrating the media establishment, figuring things out as you go along, getting wooed by Balenciaga, outgrowing a scene that you're a face of, why working for other people is crucial, what makes a story good, the beauty of collaboration, making branded content exciting, and honing the ability to execute — no matter what. While some may say 2023 may have been “the year of the girl,” we say, unapologetically, it was the year of the woman. Just take a look at Taylor Swift. In 2023, the term “Swiftonomics'' was coined — because Swift generated significant revenue, tourism, and jobs in every city where she performed. Like many other incredible women, she owned her power in a new way, and the world took notice. Betches Media took this concept — that ALL women should celebrate being powerful, and own our instincts to never back down — and they created a media empire out of it. Sami Sage, co-founder, and Chief Creative Officer of Betches Media joins us to talk about selling the brand, and why she's not afraid to say that she cares about making and spending money in alignment with her goals. In Mailbag, we hear from someone who's wondering if it's worth it to maintain two credit cards, and Julia Chatzky asks about best practices for sharing a credit card with your partner.
