Rifkin's Festival is the 49th film written and directed by Woody Allen, first released in 2020. Wallace Shawn stars as Mort Rifkin, a film teacher who accompanies his wife, Sue, played by Gina Gershon, to the San Sebastián Film Festival. During the festival, Mort has strange dreams that seem oddly familiar, and realises he has some regrets in his life that he has to face. Filmed in gorgeous San Sebastián in Spain, Rifkin's Festival is a playful conversation about cinema itself. But at the heart it is a somber character study of a man who might have left it too late. Welcome to the Woody Allen Pages Podcast. This week, episode 20, we talk about 2020's Rifkin's Festival. How it was conceived, how it was made and how it didn't quite get released properly with COVID and all. Spoilers are everywhere so please watch the film and come back. This is Play It Forward. Real people. Real stories. The struggle to Play It Forward. Episode 376 with actress Gina Gershon from the Woody Allen movie Ripkin's FestivalWoody Allen taps into his deep appreciation for cinema history for this adventurous tale of a onetime film devotee who miraculously rediscovers his love for the art form.Mort Rifkin (Wallace Shawn), a retired film studies professor, accompanies his publicist wife Sue (Gina Gershon) to the San Sebastian Film Festival in Spain. He goes not for the films but because he's worried that Sue's fascination with her young buzzed-about film director client, Philippe (Louis Garrel), might be more than professional. In addition, Mort hopes the change of scenery will provide a respite from his struggle to write a first novel that lives up to his impossibly exacting standards. Turned off by the lavish praise showered on Philippe's film, which he considers banal, Mort becomes preoccupied with the cinema classics he once taught, by masters like Bergman, Fellini, Godard, Truffaut and Buñuel. His relentlessly dismissive opinions of Philippe, and Sue's sharp focus on her career as well as Philippe, strain their already frayed relationship. Mort's mood lightens when he meets Dr. Jo Rojas (Elena Anaya), a kindred spirit whose marriage to tempestuous painter Paco (Sergi López) is causing her pain as well. While Mort's personal tastes have sometimes pushed people away, Jo's intellect and shared sensibility draw them together. While Sue spends her days with Philippe, Mort's relationship with Jo deepens and he rekindles his love for classic films. Reflecting on the events of his life through the prism of those great movies, Mort finds renewed hope for his future. Written and directed by Allen, the wistful comedy stars Elena Anaya, Louis Garrel, Gina Gershon, Sergi López, Wallace Shawn, and Christoph Waltz.

February used to be a slow time of the year in the entertainment business. Not anymore! There are big time movies and series coming at you from every which way this year. So it's a good thing we've taken it upon our weary selves to sort it all out for you. We start with "Moonfall." It stars Halle Berry and Patrick Wilson and it's about a mysterious force which knocks the moon from its orbit around Earth and sends it hurtling on a collision course with life as we know it. Bill Bregoli saw it, but is it worth venturing out to a theater to see it? We'll let you know. There's a new Woody Allen movie - Bill McCuddy and Neil Rosen saw "Rifkin's Festival" and they can't wait to fill you in on it. And of course we all watched "Pam & Tommy," the new miniseries that follows the story of Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee's relationship, going back to their whirlwind romance that started with them marrying after only knowing each other for 96 hours in 1995. And speaking of romance gone awry, we've got "The Tinder Swindler" it's the hot new Netflix true crime documentary about a real life weasel who wooed women online then conned them out of millions of dollars. We've also got updates on "The Gilded Age" as well as "And Just Like That." As always, we're brought to you by the Accutron Show, so listen in!

I have followed Woody Allen since I was a boy, from his heyday as a standup comic to his emergence as one of America's most original (and prolific) filmmakers, so he is very much a part of my life. At 86 he is as busy as ever. His latest film, Rifkin's Festival (starring Wallace Shawn and Gina Gershon) opens today in theaters and on VOD. He has another film ready to shoot, a play about to be produced, and a new book of humorous essays called Zero Gravity, all dependent on pandemic conditions. This conversation gave Jessie and me an opportunity to ask about his beginnings as a gag writer while still in high school, his passion for playing New Orleans-style jazz, and his singular work ethic. He was uncommonly generous with his time and typically self-deprecating about his talent.
First, the great Gina Gershon joins us to promote her new movie "Rifkin's Festival" and chat about jamming with Slash, Duff, and Matt Sorum. Then, "Fan Obsession" with podcaster Wayne Roberts. We extensively chat about his love of radio, Guns N' Roses, and Charles Manson! #ginagershon #gunsnroses

Stephane Wrembel has been a preeminent exponent of the Django Reinhardt style for over 20 years and is famous for providing music for not one, but two Woody Allen films! (Midnight in Paris, Rifkin's Festival). Here we talk about Carl Jung, the book of Genesis, ancient Egyptian mythology, St Augustine, Friedrich Nietzsche, Cartesian skepticism, black magic and whether or not recording music is a good thing... Django Reinhardt is mentioned at some point also... We were joined by London based guitarist Andrea Vergani. ep_15_podbeann7kvbe

See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
