Don’s got shaving cream in the mirror, Megan’s got a mop and a plan, and Lane Pryce is one wallet away from going full American Psycho. It’s A Little Kiss Part 2! And on this episode of Mad Men Men, Jon Negroni, Will Ashton, and Mike Overhulse are breaking down the second half of Mad Men’s bold, chaotic, and deeply handsy Season 5 premiere. This episode also covers the real-world 1960s context behind the show’s uneasy depiction of civil rights “progress.” Plus some surprising behind-the-scenes trivia, including how production on this episode had to jump around thanks to January Jones’s real-life pregnancy. And yes, we finally address that Reddit theory about Masters of Sex. In case you’re new here, Mad Men Men recaps Mad Men through the perspectives of three different types of viewers: a first-timer, a first-time rewatcher, and someone who thought the best way to deal with their feelings about Don Draper was to start a podcast. EXTRA CREDITS Matthew Weiner created Mad Men, which aired on AMC from 2007 to 2015. Matthew Weiner directed “A Little Kiss (Part 2)” and Jennifer Getzinger wrote the script. The show stars Jon Hamm, January Jones, Elisabeth Moss, Vincent Kartheiser, Christina Hendricks, John Slattery, Robert Morse, and many more. Our intro music is “Mad Men Men” by Tom Davidson, which is an original remix of the show’s opening theme “A Beautiful Mine” by RJD2. Podcast illustration is by Jon Negroni. Our podcast hosts include Jon Negroni (Podcast Editor of InBetweenDrafts), Will Ashton (cohost of the Cinemaholics podcast), and Michael Overhulse (a guy who’s addicted to working at startups). We’ll be back soon to discuss Season 5 Episode 3, titled “Tea Leaves.” Subscribe to Mad Men Men on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, or wherever else podcasts are, ahem, advertised.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's ok Don, Mad Men Men doesn't have a budget for a commercial, either. That's right, this week we're getting into 'The Chrysanthemum and the Sword,' the fifth episode of Season 4. And we don't need a "gift" from you the listeners, as you just being our listeners is plenty gift enough. Just don't invite us to any sleepovers anytime soon. In case this is your first time digging into our podcast, we recap Mad Men from the perspective of a first-time watcher, someone who only watched the show once while it was airing, and a superfan who watches excessively instead of having a functional social life. We at Mad Men Men know a little something about being the rejected podcast. That's right, we're talking about Season 4 Episode 4 this week, directed by the one and only John Slattery A.K.A. Roger Sterling! If you have any criticisms, be sure to write half a sentence on your typewriter and then throw the paper out. By Editor, Concierge Medicine Today It has been a minute since my wife and I watched Mad Men. I still remember a few quotes, though. I recall Roger Sterling's sage marketing and business advice (above) with ease. Unrelated, my wife and our close family friends recalled just last week how we found Betty, a fun character with a few quirky phrases of her own pretty memorable as well. Remember when her son Bobby said, "I'm bored." She replied, "Go bang your head against a wall...Only boring people are bored." It was not great motherly advice, but her character was entertaining, to say the least. Back on point: According to a new report published by the American Medical Association, between 2012 and 2022, the share of physicians working in private practices decreased by 13 percentage points — from 60.1% to 46.7%. Additionally, Slate.com wrote, 'Doctors who run practices are essentially business owners, but many have never learned to manage a staff.' Fierce Healthcare reported that 'Medical graduate students are at a disadvantage when they don't get trained on the business elements of medical practice.' Finally, Harvard Business Review writes, 'Most physicians have been trained to keep emotion out of the job, and are not comfortable showing vulnerability in the workplace.' Established in 1907, Dan & Louis Oyster Bar is Portland's oldest family-owned restaurant. Is it really a bar though? Or just a restaurant that serves drinks? We'll leave that for you to decide. But is it a FANTASTIC place to eat, drink, and connect with Old Portland? Abso-shuckin'-lutely. Yes, like Roger Sterling and Don Draper in Mad Men's Season 1 classic "Red in the Face" oyster lunch scene, the HBTG boys were busting after a midday bacchanal of invertebrates, martinis, and cheesecake. Thankfully for all involved there were no flights of stairs to be climbed en route to the recording studio afterward and the only expulsion was the pure joy of experiencing a Portland classic for the first time. PLUS, reflections on our visit to one of the newest bars in the city -- Too Soon -- in our April Fool's episode! Welcome to the Munsons at the Movies podcast. Each episode we delve into the filmography and impact of a randomly selected actor. In this episode, we explore the career of the silver fox, John Slattery. Best known for his roles as Roger Sterling in Mad Men (2007-2015), Ben Bradlee Jr. in Spotlight (2015), and Howard Stark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Slattery has built a successful career as a supporting actor on television and film. Joined once again by guest Munson, Matti Groll, we discuss Slattery's charm on-screen, an early role where he loved golden showers, contemplate if he has any roles better than Mad Men, and brainstorm the third installment of the Dirty Dancing franchise. How does he rank on the Munson Meter? Listen to find out.
Pour yourself a martini, because ‘Mad Men' star John Slattery is joining Jen and Doug to discuss the art of smoking fake cigarettes, how he almost played Don Draper instead of Roger Sterling, and the great chemistry he developed with co-star Jon Hamm.

I should also mention that Cliff's phone was messed up and he couldn't join us. He'll come for Episode 100, series wrap up).Sally has grown up.Peggy and Stan!Three phone calls to the women in his life, not one of the is Megan, though she probably would not have accepted the charges.I want to take this opportunity to very publicly thank Steve. Set in the 1960s, this show took the television world by storm. Mad Men, starring Jon Hamm, Christina Hendricks, Elizabeth Moss and a horde of the amazing cast with brilliant writing, is about an ad agency on Madison Avenue in 1960 New York City. In this episode, I talk about the charm of a period drama executed this well along with breaking down the complex characters such as that of Roger Sterling and Don Draper. From relating an 18th-century poem to a dominant and driven man like Don Draper, to discussing sexism, culture and relationships in the series, this episode of This is not what I meant is heavy with subtext. First of many in this series called "Shows based in New York". Hello! Season 2!! Intro: A Beautiful Mine (Mad Men theme song) Clips used from the show. The boys slip into their finest suits and break out the whiskey to watch "Christmas Comes but Once a Year" from the fourth season of Mad Men (available on Amazon Prime). Do the dastardly deeds of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce put a damper on the holiday proceedings, or will the spirit shine through enough for the hosts to call this a Christmas Classic?Non-Christmas topics include: trying to address the 60's of it all, The Rock's diet, The Men Who Stare at Goats, drinking, men getting what they want, holiday humiliation, office parties, pop psychology, Alison Brie, the greatness of Roger Sterling, tropical vacations, and a game of "my uncle is better than your uncle."Wikipedia entry for this episode: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas_Comes_But_Once_a_Year_(Mad_Men)The episode's featured Christmas podcast is Weird Christmas: https://weirdchristmas.com/category/podcast/.
In which we discuss Justin's gardening and pickling failures, how many episodes we have "in the can," Roger Sterling's sexual deviance, womens' height minimums for men, what books the girls would read, whether Batman and Robin were gay, and more.
"Will's Dip Corner" is turning into a recurring segment and I'm having a manic spell. This week we talk about taste in movies, discrepancies in Roger Sterling's age, and whether things were really that good in the 90's. We end on a long thread about voting (or not) in the upcoming election, civic engagement, and what we can learn from the Tao of Will.

Ian's dog Ollie leads an all-star panel for an episode about MAD MEN. Shannon, returning guest Ian Silverii, and new guest Kristen Winkler get to talk about David Berkowitz, Madison Avenue, and mercury poisoning. Plus, they play FMK, Scootin' with Putin, Hot Takes and more... We might even introduce a new game called "Guess the Pete!" Ollie chimes in a fair bit, with a few barks and some sweet puppy grumbles, and we all berate Ian's pronunciation of "height" (which turns out to be an archaic form of the word that, while no longer in service, was once a thing). It's not often that we point to Voyager as a positive example of anything, but when Enterprise straight-up copies an episode of its older brother, we have to give credit where credit is due. We talk about "Doctor's Orders," "Hatchery," and "Azati Prime," all of which give us plenty to grumble about. Then, we continue our look at Mad Men's fourth season, as Don gets grabby, Glen stays creepy, Lee Garner gets whiny, and Roger Sterling is probably glad that "Christmas Comes But Once a Year."

Ron Moore and his wacky gang decide to test the limits of what Battlestar Galactica could be in three very, very different episodes. We discuss "Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down," "The Hand of God," and "Colonial Day," and try to figure out just what the hell the writers were thinking. In a similar vein, and everyone puts on a show in Mad Men's "My Old Kentucky Home." You think these people can't get any worse, and then Roger Sterling puts on blackface.

You may not know this, but Matt-Man and Jayman are known as the Kris Kristofferson and Johnny Cash of BTR. HA! I'm kidding, actually they're the Don Draper and Roger Sterling of BTR. Okay, maybe not. They're the Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin of BTR. What? Yeah, I guess not. The truth is they're considered the Dylan Thomas and Hunter S Thompson of BTR. Or something. Point is Matt and Jay are fairly familiar with the drinking culture and know a few things about hangovers and how to deal with them. They've got stories galore about epic partying and epic hangovers. There are several different kinds of hangovers a person can suffer from depending on what they drank and how much. Matt and Jay have experienced them all and are here to help. Why are we doing this? Because Matt and Jay expect to be nursing some serious hangovers (Matt more than Jay) during the show because this is Matt-Man's birthday weekend. Not just ANY birthday though. It's his 50th birthday!! OH MY GOD HE'S AN OLD MAN! Anyway, there will be serious celebrating happening on Saturday. PLUS, it's also our Canadian Bureau Chief Jamie Mapleleaf's brithday weekend too! She'll be here to provide some much needed decency to the show. You'll also hear from the Rev Moneymaker, Guy Ahnurdyck, Drew Peacock, Stubby Stonehenge and more of the IWS Players. PLUS YOU'RE CALLS! Call us up and wish Matt and Jamie a happy birthday. Or, call in and tell Matt just what you think of him. He's excited to hear from you. IWS Website And Like us on Facebook!
