The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves. What is your version of happy? Sure, we don't all have the same things in mind, but we do have something in mind when we think of personal happiness. Joining us this week to discuss how we work toward obtaining our vision of happiness is Rosetta Thurman, the Founder of Happy Black Woman. Rosetta and I chatted about how happiness is not about having stuff but instead about doing the stuff that you care the most about, how minimalism amplifies what we deem the most important, and how a minimalist approach to life can lead to us accomplishing dreams we'd never thought we'd see in this lifetime. If you’ve ever wondered how to develop confidence in yourself this podcast episode was recorded just for you. It features Kimberly Dunlap, one of the Happy Black Woman inner circle who has been wowing people with her insights into personal confidence, inner healing, empowerment, and a whole lot more. On this episode, Rosetta talks with Kimberly about the things that have led her to the point in life where she feels free of her own inner turmoil and empowered to help other women reach the same levels of satisfaction and confidence - and beyond! Do you realize the power of your own story? Most of us see our story as a path riddled with liabilities, hurts, and disappointments. We find it hard to believe that the things we’ve experienced can be of help to others. And while your path may be fraught with those kinds of experiences it’s nevertheless true that what you’ve experienced equips you to be an asset to others who have not yet overcome those same things in their own lives. This episode of the podcast features Kimberly Dunlap, a woman with her own past and share of pain, but she’s leveraging those experiences to use her story for the benefit of others. If you need inner healing, a newfound confidence in yourself, or a sense of greater purpose then you need to hear Kimberly’s story! To begin building confidence it's vital that you learn to quiet the inner noise. In this conversation on The Happy Black Woman podcast, Rosetta asked her guest, Kimberly Dunlap, what the first step is in moving toward inner healing and the building of personal confidence. Kimberly said that the very first thing every woman needs to do is learn how to quiet the inner noise that distracts and condemns. You know what she's talking about, don't you? It’s those nagging voices from the past that tell you that you are no good, not enough, or a failure. Silencing those noises enables you to begin hearing the truth about yourself so that you can start moving past the limitations those negative beliefs have impressed upon you. Find out more about how to find confidence and inner healing, on this episode. Do you struggle to trust yourself? Every person on the planet is riddled with a past full of missteps, mistakes, and wrong calls. That kind of track record could cause anyone to begin doubting themselves, to find it hard to trust that they are even capable of making the right call when important decisions arise. If you struggle with those things, you’re not alone. Kimberly Dunlap was plagued with the same kinds of insecurity and doubt until she determined that she was going to overcome. On this episode you’ll hear Kimberly’s story and find out how the insights she’s learned on her own journey to self-confidence can help you learn to trust yourself again and move toward greater things. How to know if you’re living out a charade that’s not authentic. You’ve seen people on TV and internet videos who seem to have it all together, but there’s something wrong in the way they come across, something that doesn’t seem real or authentic. None of us want to be that kind of person but we can easily fall into the trap of putting on a facade for others to see. We do it to feel better about ourselves and to hide our insecurities. How do you know if you’re living out that kind of charade? There’s one clear sign. You don’t have joy. Kimberly Dunlap shares how a lack of joy is the main tip-off to an inauthentic life, on this episode of Happy Black Woman with Rosetta Thurman. The path to understanding your African heritage is one that each black woman has to take in her own time. But June Nzinga White believes that the sooner a woman begins the journey the better she’ll be able to know herself and the unique things that make her a light in the world. On this episode of The Happy Black Woman podcast, Rosetta welcomes June and together the two of them unpack what it means to go in search of your Afrikan heritage, why it matters, and the benefits that come from being more clearly connected to your roots as a black woman. You won’t want to miss this enlightening and motivating conversation. Are you disconnected from your past? If you don’t know where you’ve come from - where your people have come from - you don’t truly know the context out of which you’ve been raised. There is so much from your past that informs and shapes who you are. June Nzinga White is passionate about helping black people understand their heritage so they can better live out the unique place in the world they have been given. In this conversation, Rosetta asks June a series of questions about her journey into understanding her own past and uncovers how a connection to her Afrikan roots has empowered her and placed her on the mission to help others find their true identity as well. Your African heritage not only tells where you’ve come from, but who you are. It may not seem clear to you that your African heritage powerfully informs who you are in the present day, but it’s true. As a black woman, you have unique characteristics that flow out of the cultural, historical, and spiritual traditions that have been passed down to you, whether you knew about them or not. June Nzinga White helps women just like you become better connected to their heritage so they are able to live it out more powerfully and authentically. Rosetta chats with June about that journey, on this episode of The Happy Black Woman podcast. What happens when you know your own heritage and history? Confidence. Confidence is one of the most important things we all need in order to fulfill our calling and step into our place in the world. As a black woman, confidence can be lacking for a number of reasons. On this episode, June Nzinga White describes her journey into confidence that began when she first read the writings of Marcus Garvey and began to understand the Afrikan heritage that had shaped her without her knowledge. It’s this knowledge and the time spent understanding her past that led June to a confidence she didn’t know she was missing. Now June helps other black women embrace their true identity and live in their confidence. You can hear more of June’s story on this episode, so be sure you listen. Do you need a place to connect with other Black Woman? There is something powerful about coming together with other like-minded, energetic women who are on the same path as you. About JUNE NZINGA WHITE June White is on an Afrikan centered journey. She did not begin her life’s journey with an Afrikan-centered mentality. She was taught that education is everything. So she received a BS in Accountancy and a Masters in Taxation from one of the top 20 Universities in the country. After 2.5 years of feeling lost in the accounting industry, she needed a change. She realized she was exhausting her energy in the wrong field and for the wrong purpose. Everyone kept telling her "just be yourself," but when she tried to do that, she drew a blank. She didn't know who she was or where she came from. She knew nothing of my history. There was this intense feeling of shame screaming out “how am I supposed to be myself if I don't know anything about my past?” After that realization, June began searching and came across the following quote from Marcus Garvey: “A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.” This quote led her to begin doing extensive research about her true history; which led her to the start of an arduous, yet rewarding journey towards an Afrikan-centered Life. One of her newfound duties is to lead people towards Afrikan excellence by giving them knowledge. Another is to lead by example. Today's guest, Jesse Krieger is an amazing example of the kind of life you can live if you strategically take action to make it happen. His publishing company, Lifestyle Entrepreneur Press is based around his personal success as a best-selling author, with his book hitting #1 in the Personal Success category on Amazon. He's leveraged his success to help other entrepreneurs who desire to build a brand or business around a book get that book published and ranking high on the best-seller charts as well. In this conversation with Rosetta Thurman, Jesse shares some of his story and practical tips about heading into a life that allows you the freedom and income to pursue your dreams. You won't want to miss this! [Tweet "You can leverage a book to build your entire business. Find out how on this episode"] You can build a brand and a business around a book, and Jesse Krieger is the man to show you how! Even if you wrote a best-selling book that would likely not be the means by which you'd gain a ton of income. But the content of the book does a number of things for you. #1 - it enables you to have a “business card” that is a book, a way for you to demonstrate your expertise in a tangible publication that people naturally respect. #2 - it lays the groundwork for you to build additional content off the topics you cover in the book, anything from online courses and video sets, to live events and speaking engagements. There's no limit to the ways you can leverage a book, if you know how to do it the right way. Today's guest, Jesse Krieger, is the man to help you do it, so be sure you listen to this episode of the Happy Black Woman! Start rough and improve as you go. Jesse Krieger may be a best-selling author and a publisher, but his success didn't happen on the first take. In this conversation he tells how he created a small, partly finished book, then modified it by adding more content, then continued to tweak and update it as he went along. That enabled him to get something finished and continue to build. Alongside his improvements, his business was growing at the same time. It's a philosophy he subscribes to and suggests that you follow. Don't wait for your “thing” to be perfect before you release it. Get it out there and make improvements as you go. That's how you learn what your market wants and needs and it's how you get yourself rolling toward creating the great things you have in mind. Learn Jesse's thoughts on this important issue by listening to this episode. Have you heard of the “big rocks' philosophy of goal setting? Jesse Krieger refers to an illustration his mentor taught him that uses a jar, large rocks, small rocks, sand, and water. It's a great way to conceptualize how you should go about prioritizing things in your life and business. The original illustration was taught by Stephen Covey and it continues to be a guiding principle for many entrepreneurs and business people today. You can see the illustration in this video, or even better, listen to this episode of the Happy Black Woman Podcast to hear how today's guest, Jesse Krieger, uses the concept to move his publishing empire forward month by month. You want freedom? Then you'll have to develop structure in your life. That may sound a bit counterintuitive, but it's actually very logical. Freedom is like any other goal, you have to put things in place that will enable it to happen. You can't just live a free flowing life and expect your desired freedom to come about. Jesse Krieger, today's guest, suggests that you need to put the systems and tools in place that enable you to manage the demands of life in a way that affords you the freedom of lifestyle and time that you want. If you don't, you'll be at the beck and call of whatever comes your way. Find out how Jesse does it on this episode. [Tweet "If you want lifestyle freedom it's going to require structure. Today's guest, Liana Chaouli, has been in the work of Image Therapy for over 30 years. She wants to help as many people as possible to see their own beauty – to become empowered through their clothing choices. She loves to teach women how to choose clothes that flatter their bodies and made them feel worthy, strong, and as uniquely beautiful as they truly are, so they can show up authentically in the world! With thirty years' experience as a custom clothing designer, color specialist, and a Master Couturier, Liana is a high-level clothing craftsman, patternmaker, and seamstress who understands all the facets of clothing that fits the way it should on your body. This is a very interesting conversation that reveals much of what Liana is about. You'll be intrigued by the things she has to share today, on the Happy Black Woman podcast. [Tweet "Image Therapy encompasses everything. Find out why on the Happy Black Woman Podcast"] The confusing contrast of confidence in one sphere and insecurity in another. Liana Chaouli was an interpreter at a foreign embassy when she saw this contrast for the first time, and it broke her heart. She was working with the wife of a foreign ambassador, a woman who was stately and confident in certain contexts. But at the same time, hidden deep within was a lack of confidence, possibly even a self-contempt that impacted the way she lived and most importantly, the way she felt about herself. It was that experience that motivated Liana to become an advocate for women (and eventually men as well) finding their true self and living out of the beauty of who they have been made to be. You can hear Liana's unbelievable story on this episode of the Happy Black Woman podcast, so be sure to listen. “When I see a client step into their greatness, that is the proudest moment for me.” That's what today's guest, Liana Chaouli says when asked what makes her the most proud. It's not about her or her accomplishments. It's about seeing other people realize the deep truths about who they are and begin to live those out in the real world. It's an honor she's been able to have over and over as she's worked with people from all walks of life, helping them understand their own personal style and come into their own. You can hear about her fascinating approach to helping people on this episode of The Happy Black Woman. [Tweet ""If we want to get bigger, there is a way." - Liana Chaouli"] Inspired by the presence of awe. When Rosetta asked Liana Chaouli who inspires her, the first answer she gave was “children.” But she quickly rephrased her response to explain that it's the awe and wonder that children experience and express that is what inspires her. She feels energized and alive, ready to tackle the next dream when she sees people enjoying and living in the wonder of life. It's her desire to do that through helping people maximize their wardrobe and appearance to reflect the real person who is inside. Learn more about Liana's approach and work on this episode of the Happy Black Woman Podcast. The #1 tip Liana Chaouli gives to the Happy Black Woman community. On the road to your destiny you'll have many people tell you that you can't do it, that you should do it, that it's dangerous or foolish to go after your dreams. Liana Chaouli has advice for anyone who finds themselves facing that kind of discouragement: Don't listen to people. Well meaning people will bring their past into your present to destroy your future, if you let them. You can't listen to their objections or discouragement. You have to stick to your guns and keep pressing toward your dreams. In today's episode of The Happy Black Woman Podcast, we have the honor of speaking with Molesey Crawford, founder of “The Queen Code,” a personal development community that is changing the lives of women all over the globe. As you listen to this episode you're going to hear how Molesey learned about her own feminine desires and self, how she channeled that into a business that was true to who she really is, and how that business has grown to provide her with the true channel of expression and purpose she was meant to have while providing her and her family with the freedom they enjoy today. Be sure to take the time to listen to this one, it's a real gem. What IS the Queen Code? Molesey's journey toward becoming the founder of the Queen Code has not been overnight or easy. It's through that journey that she discovered the principles of the Queen Code in the first place (as it should be, right?). She believes that there's a feminine evolution happening in the hearts of women all around the globe. Women are beginning to awaken to the truth that they are here for a reason. She believes that women all over the globe are feeling the calling to return, rebirth, reconnect, recover, remember and reclaim their feminine birthright. She desires to support those women on a journey of deep healing and transformation. Hear more of her journey to those realizations and how she's helping women all over the world as you listen to this episode. [Tweet "You need the “know who” before you need the “know how” - @thequeencode"] Finding a mentor early on made all the difference. Molesey's business was still very small and she had almost no money when she first decided to find and pay for a mentor - and she's never regretted it. In fact, that decision was the catalyst to moving her life and business forward in a powerful way. She started with $10 a month as part of a coaching program and now has elevated her involvement with her coach to a much higher level, and it's continued to reap great rewards. If you're stuck, needing help, or even moving backwards in your entrepreneurial or personal development, you may need to take that bold step and find a coach or mentor that fits your lifestyle. These two ladies (Molesey or Rosetta) may be just what you need. Find out more on this episode. [Tweet ""The longer we stay in indecision, the longer we are kept from what we want" - @thequeencode"] Be. Do. Have. That's the sequence in which personal transformation and business success comes. Molesey Crawford has discovered that nobody can have a truly free lifestyle and invigorating business without first going through this necessary sequence. BE - has to do with discovering who you are and what you are passionate about. Only when you function out of the fullness of your identity are you able to bring your intended value to the world. DO - This is the action step, where you put your dreams and calling into action. Most people start here and find themselves spinning their wheels and becoming burned out and frustrated as a result. HAVE - This is the aspect where you begin to receive the fruits of your labors and see the fulfillment of the calling you're acting on. Hear Molesey explain this progression on this episode. Slow down so your blessings can catch you. Too often women are so busy doing that they fail to BE who they truly are. Too often they believe that what they do is what makes them who they are. But the reverse is true. It's time to stop all the hustle and busy-ness so that you can find your true self, learn to do your work out of that place, and see the blessings that flow more naturally as a result. Moseley Crawford has learned these principles and they are what guide her work at The Queen Code. Hear her explain the importance of embracing and applying these concepts on this great episode of The Happy Black Woman, with Rosetta Thurman. [Tweet ""Queens! Today's podcast is all about you and equipping you to build the life that you've been called to build. And today's guest is going to get down to the practical nuts and bolts of how to do it. Dee Marshall is considered to be on the short list of top Coaches for women. She has built a women's empowerment empire that inspires, encourages, motivates, challenges and supports women. In this conversation with Rosetta Thurman, Dee shares some of the most practical, get-your-life-in-order tips we've had on the podcast yet. You'll walk away with some great ideas and plenty of practical things you can do to take your everyday life to the next level. Business and ministry, all in one package. When Dee Marshall talks about “Girlfriends Pray” she lights up. That's because the mission of the organization is something God put in her path and that she delights to be a part of. It's a movement to get women all over the world united in prayer, seeking God and His best for their lives and the worlds they touch. But Dee is also a businesswoman and coach whose expertise and knowledge is sought out by many top level women of faith who are in the business world. How does one woman pull off so much in two distinctly different areas? She shares the key to her success in this episode of the Happy Black Woman podcast, and you'll be surprised how simple it is. How structure can set you up for massive success. There are lots of “free spirits” out there, women who love to be spontaneous, living on the edge day to day, enjoying whatever life brings their way. Dee Marshall is one of them. But she says that women who are leaders cannot allow themselves to be so free spirited that they lose all sense of intentionality. Leaders have to live according to structure because people and results depend on the actions they take. For that reason they need to organize their lives around basic structures that can provide the context through which their dreams can be realized. Hear how Dee Marshall does this in her own life as she breaks down her daily schedule for all of us to hear, on this edition of the podcast. What really makes you happy in life? That's the question Rosetta Thurman asked Dee Marshall near the end of this conversation, and Dee's answer was very powerful. What she says is this: When you live a life of purpose, you are happy. She wakes up happy every morning because she knows that the things she will be involved in during that day are lasting, important things that will make a difference in people's lives. That's meaning. That's purpose. And it's the source of ongoing happiness for Dee. Listen in to hear how you can find that purpose for your life as Dee shares her perspective on how to get it. Dee Marshall's #1 tip for women who want to build a business they love. Dee doesn't hold back on this episode. When Rosetta asks her to share her best tip for women wanting to move forward with a passion or a business, she says this: You do need to pursue something you are passionate about, but don't let the passion take over the business. It IS a business so make sure you run it like one. You have to be concerned with things like income, costs, conversions, bottom line, because if you aren't you might as well quit today and just follow your passion as a side project or hobby. Keep clear on the facts that if you want to have a business that follows your passion, you've got to organize and structure it so that it can support you to pursue that passion. And a bonus tip from Dee Marshall… If you want your level of success to grow, then you've got to be growing. Work on you. Keep yourself always in the stream of personal development. Without constant improvement you'll fall into the rut of seeing things the way you've always seen them. You can't afford that. Your success and business growth will be hampered by it. That's it. Keep growing. Hear more powerful but practical advice like that on this episode of Happy Black Woman. Welcome to this first ever episode of the Happy Black Woman podcast! We're so glad you've taken a few moments of your valuable time to check out what we're doing. This podcast is the only show designed to help black women create lives of happiness, success, and freedom, and you'll be led on that journey by your host, Rosetta Thurman. Rosetta's story is an exciting example of what could happen in your life if you're willing to take the steps to make it happen. You can hear that story in this introductory episode of the podcast, so be sure to listen in! This podcast is not for everyone. There are people who are very happy and comfortable with their life the way it is at present. That's great. Really. Those people probably won't be interested in this show. There's too much shaking up of the status quo going on here, too much rocking the boat. So who IS this show for? It's for black women who want to be free, black women who want to set the terms for their own lives and build the happiness and lifestyle they've only dreamed of. But equally important, it's for women who are willing to step out and take action. If you won't do that, there's nobody who will. So listen in to hear Rosetta tell her story of stepping out. Maybe it will encourage you to take some steps of your own. Rosetta's move from working as a successful nonprofit organizer to becoming an entrepreneur, speaker, and coach. Rosetta had a pretty comfortable job. She was paid well. Everything was going her way. But something happened she didn't expect. People began inviting her to speak at their companies and events, asking her to share the wisdom she'd learned in her comfortable job. So Rosetta started traveling, speaking, experiencing the new things you can only experience when you're on the road traveling the globe. That's when she began to realize that the 9 to 5 corporate role she was in was actually very limiting. That was the first time she began to think that maybe she could step out of that comfortable job and begin a life of her own making. The story is incredible, and you can hear the rest of it on this episode of the podcast. Rosetta's year of liberation It was 2010 when all the pieces came together and Rosetta made her fateful decision. She quit her corporate job in the nonprofit sector and began her entrepreneurial career. The rest is history. Rosetta has traveled the world seeing sights she never thought she'd see and meeting people and having opportunities that she never dreamed. Her story is one of inspiration, hope, and courage. Rosetta has begun this podcast to help you learn how to do the very same thing in your life. So be sure to listen in during those spare moments of your day - when you exercise, drive, or do chores or busywork. Redeem those moments to further your own education, encourage your heart, and move yourself step by tiny step into the life of your dreams. You can do it, and Rosetta is here to help. What you can expect from the Happy Black Woman podcast. Rosetta's mission is to help women transform their lives through personal development and entrepreneurship. It's about more than Rosetta, it's through the community she's been able to establish at www.HappyBlackWoman.com. This podcast is a new resource she's going to be using toward that end. She'll be featuring inspirational stories, expert guests, sharing her own insights and coaching tips, and doing it all to help you move your life to the next level. Let Rosetta know what you think!
