Cal Wilson is a stand-up comedian, writer, actor, author and TV and radio host. She moved from New Zealand to Australian shores in 2003 and has gone on to become one of Australia's most popular comedians. She is a favourite on television shows such as ABC's Spicks and Specks and Good News Week, as well as Thank God You're Here, Hughesy, We Have A Problem, Have You Been Paying Attention? Skithouse, Rove Live, The Glasshouse and the 2022 premiere series of Would I Lie To You? Australia, all on Network Ten. Amongst taking our screens and stages by storm, Cal landed a dream job of hers – an ensemble cast member in Whose Line Is It Anyway? Australia alongside some of the country's brightest improvisers. In 2018, she was invited by Netflix to the Montreal Just for Laughs comedy festival in Montreal to record a Netflix Original Comedy Special which was released globally in early 2019. That same year Cal become a very serious children's author, penning two books called “George and the Great Bum Stampede,” and “George and the Great Brain Swappery.” A gifted storyteller & writer, Cal was invited to join the writing team for the 2022 BAFTA Awards ceremony, as well as having previously written on the series Mean Mums and The Weekly with Charlie Pickering. She is the Melbourne live show host of the worldwide smash-hit storytelling podcast The Moth and in July this year she once again joined comedy phenomenon podcast The Guilty Feminist on tour around her native country, New Zealand. Despite an aversion to the great outdoors, Cal bravely joined the cast of I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here! in 2022 which saw her take on all the usual hair-raising challenges and biblical amount of bugs the series has to offer. Unprecedented times called for unprecedented adventures and at the very least some good material. Taking a swift move away from creepy crawlies and into all things cake – Cal has just been announced as a brand new host of The Great Australian Bake Off which will air on Foxtel in 2023. Cal also has some shows out, in particular if you're in Melbourne check her out at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival! We chat about Cal's daily reddit routine, her obsession with cats, improv and stand up comedy, collaboration and connection, her unique philosophy and mindset, supporting others, perseverance and resilience. late night chat shows are a dime a dozen in the states but Australia had two very notable shows to bring to the genre. Rove Live and Enough Rope, both involved a celebrity talking to an australian host but that's where the similarities stop they both had different ways to approach their guest and Ainslie and Zak discuss which of the two shows have the longevity to remain the GOAT of talk shows?
ALLEGEDLY! Imagine if Mark Zuckerberg went nutso, started walking around shirtless with a gun trying to take over another country? That's pretty much John McAfee. Most people know his name because he's the guy who invented the antiviral computer software that almost everyone has used at one point or another. Just another nerdy tech dude with lots of money, right? Lol no. John McAfee took off to the jungle in Belize, pretty much tried to take over the country with his own army, insisted he was creating magical new medicines out of rare jungle plants, and left a suspicious trail of abused and/or dead people in his wake. Well-known Australian comedian, producer, TV personality and Gold Logie winner Rove Mcmanus stops by and talks to Serge about being an animal lover, the origins of nicknames and getting his start in community TV.
Interview with Actor/TV Show Host/Producer Andy Nolch, who has been making The Kink TV show for 1.5 years (watch it on Fridays at 11.30pm on Channel 31). The Kink is a late night comedy TV show, in the style of Letterman or Rove Live. Andy has always enjoyed comedy and found a way into television, funnily enough, via a job he held in a plumbing store. We discuss: how The Kink TV show evolved, comparisons to Tom Green, the catharsis of podcasting, Andy’s depression which started in the later years of high school, attempting university and a postal job before taking time out to do what he loves, trying various methods to deal with depression, the side effects of anti-depressants, discovering Scientology, learning how to learn, starting a business, Naturopathy and other activities/techniques that helped Andy, Andy’s super powers, The Celestine Prophecy (by James Redfield), the benefits of gems, and Andy’s message that you can cure your mental health issues by taking one step at a time.
Ryan Shelton may be familiar to Australian TV audiences through his in-front-of-camera work on Rove, The Hamish and Andy Show & Gap Year, the improv series Thank God You’re Here, however behind the scenes there is an even bigger body of work as a comedic writer on Chris Lilley’s ‘We Could Be Heroes’, everything 'Hamish and Andy' and most recently on the ABC series ‘It’s A Date’. He has also served as a radio host on Nova FM in a multitude of formations including the famed ‘Ryan, Monte and Wippa’ drivetime show. We discuss his day-to-day process, how he broke into television and of course his Instagram comedy series(which is deserved of cult status), Cliff.
Ryan Shelton has contributed to some of the best Australian comedy on TV in recent years. He’s a founding member of Radio Karate who have made successful shows such as Hamish & Andy’s Gap Year. He’s also written for shows such as “We Can Be Heroes” and “It’s a Date” not to mention being a regular on “Rove Live” and “Thank God You’re Here”. In this episode we talk about how to focus on one thing, figuring out the essence of a successful show, how to respond and rebound when a show isn’t an immediate success, and how not all things should be done for money and profit… such as “Cliff”.
