http://www.attractionchecklist.com - It's time to set sail on a journey around the Rivers of America aboard Disneyland's Sailing Ship Columbia on this episode of Attraction Checklist!    Attraction audio recorded on September 30, 2023. TRANSCRIPT: Welcome to Attraction Checklist. This episode we head to Frontierland in Disneyland to ride Sailing Ship Columbia. The Disneyland website describes this attraction saying: Sail into the wilderness aboard a full-scale replica of a majestic ship from the 18th century.  There are no age or height requirements for this attraction and the Thrill Level describes it as being a Slow Water Ride that can get Loud. Before we embark on our journey, here are five fast facts about the Sailing Ship Columbia. 1. The Sailing Ship Columbia opened at Disneyland park on June 14, 1958. 2. The story goes that in the early days of Disneyland, Walt Disney wanted more traffic on the Rivers of America.  He asked Joe Fowler to come up with an idea for a new ship and, after research, Fowler suggested the Columbia Rediviva - The first American vessel to circumnavigate the globe. 3.  The original designs for the ship were sketched out on a napkin by Ray Wallace.  The masts, rigging, spars and sails of the Columbia were constructed at Todd Shipyards, Los Angeles Division, San Pedro, CA 4. The Columbia can hold up to 300 guests on each 12 minute trip around Tom Sawyer's Island. 5. The Columbia has a starring role in the nighttime spectacular Fantastic!  Serving as Captain Hook's ship, the Jolly Roger, in the original and current incarnations of the show and as The Black Pearl from Pirates of the Caribbean in the version that ran from 2017 to 2023. Let's set sail on the Sailing Ship Columbia.  John B. deHaas is joining me again today and after we ride, we'll give you our thoughts on this attraction.  This is a binaural recording so if you have headphone put them on now as we ride Sailing Ship Columbia at Disneyland! He said that the phased reopening will take at least another year. The resort has rehired or hired 28,000 cast members to bring the current staff to 30,000, 2,000 shy of pre-pandemic levels. Potrock also commented on the ability for the resort to move quickly and try different things, even if they are not perfect, knowing that they will get to a right place in the end. – https://www.ocregister.com/2022/04/01/disneyland-resort-president-ken-potrock-takes-stock-at-halfway-point-of-phased-reopening/ As early as April 18th, guests will once again be able to get up close and personal with their favorite Disney characters in the parks, resorts, and cruise ships! The new MagicBand+ will offer “glow with the show” type color changing lights, haptic vibrations, and gesture recognition. The new version will allow guests to interact with things in the park, making it a more immersive experience. The previous features of the MagicBands like theme park tickets, room keys, and purchases will also still be available. MagicBand+ is expected to debut in Disneyland in 2022, after Walt Disney World. – https://d23.com/just-announced-disney-parks-shares-new-details-on-guardians-of-the-galaxy-cosmic-rewind-the-30th-anniversary-of-disneyland-paris-and-more/ and https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2021/09/just-announced-magicband-will-debut-in-2022-at-walt-disney-world-resort-as-part-of-50th-anniversary-celebration/ The cancelling of the new hotel on the west side of Downtown Disney a few years ago left everyone wondering what was going to happen to the space that is now empty, like the old AMC theater location. At the Destination D event this weekend, we got a glimpse into what is planned. The old AMC theater building will be demolished, and a new green space with room for guests to lounge and relax will be in it's place. The area will also have a stage for performances. This means that the current Starbucks, Earl of Sandwich, and Sugarboo & Co. will again be forced to close for a second time. The concept art does show a building to the east of the area that may offer a place for these establishments in the future, but no announcements have been made. – https://d23.com/just-announced-disney-parks-shares-new-details-on-guardians-of-the-galaxy-cosmic-rewind-the-30th-anniversary-of-disneyland-paris-and-more/ It has been a while since we have heard anything about the new Disney Vacation Club tower coming to the Disneyland Hotel in the future. Work has been progressing on the site recently, and Disney showed off some more concept art from the project, including what the rooms will look like. The new room design will take inspiration from the “sketching style of Walt Disney himself.” The new tower will feature 350 guest rooms and should open in 2023. – https://d23.com/just-announced-disney-parks-shares-new-details-on-guardians-of-the-galaxy-cosmic-rewind-the-30th-anniversary-of-disneyland-paris-and-more/ and https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2021/11/20/photos-take-a-look-inside-the-new-dvc-tower-coming-to-disneyland-hotel/ The new dinign area for Harbor Galley opened last week, sooner than expected. Pelican's Landing is the name and theme of this new seating area along the Rivers of America between Harbor Galley across from the Haunted Mansion, and the rafts to Tom Sawyer Island. The area has a lot of nautical details and adds a lot of seating in this area of the park. Some informational signs are also on display, giving some information about the Mark Twain, Sailing Ship Columbia, and some of the local plants and nautical equipment. – https://www.micechat.com/308538-dateline-disneyland-redevelopments-major-changes-possible-strike/ The day has finally come! Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance is testing standby only, with no boarding group required. This is testing our theory that the attraction is in so much demand because of the queue system. We will see this week what the wait times are with just standby. The removal of the virtual queue is also a first step in heading towards Genie+ and Lightning Lane coming to Disneyland in the future. – https://www.micechat.com/308538-dateline-disneyland-redevelopments-major-changes-possible-strike/ With all of the holiday fun going on inside the parks, Downtown Disney has joined in on the fun as well. The Disney Ultimate Toy Drive, which supports Toys for Tots is available, in addition to lots of treats, drinks, food, and merchandise offerings. Of course there is also entertainment! Holiday Harmony, The Moonrays, and The Sugarplums a capella carolers will perform in the evenings Fridays through Sundays November 26th through December 26th. Main stage bands will also perform near the Downtown Disney District main stage. Of course the Star Wars: Tales fro the Galaxy's Edge will also entertain guests. – https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2021/11/enjoy-the-splendor-of-the-season-at-downtown-disney-district-at-the-disneyland-resort/ An interesting take on gift cards is coming to Disneyland and Walt Disney World soon. The Holiday Pin Series features a gift card, along with a character pin as an added bonus. The gift cards with pins must be activated at $100, with the limited edition pin included at no additional cost. There are 4 sets, with Stitch, Mickey Mouse, Grogu, and Olaf. – https://dlnewstoday.com/2021/11/first-look-new-100-holiday-gift-cards-with-pins-coming-to-walt-disney-world-and-disneyland-resort/ One of Teresa's favorite details that was added outside of Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout has been having some issues recently. The “space goo” that is scattered around the area has started to shrink in some areas, causing the area to be uneven. Some of the goo has even come undone from the walkway, leaving holes. No word on if Disney is going to repair, replace, or just remove this theme detail. – https://www.micechat.com/308538-dateline-disneyland-redevelopments-major-changes-possible-strike/ The vote on the cast member union agreement did not go as smooth as it should have. Some voting irregularities came up, such as cast members getting the wrong park ballot, observers being kicked out before counting was complete, and rejected ballots. We are waiting for what the next step will be, and will pass that information along to you once we know something. – https://www.micechat.com/306249-disneyland-contract-troubles-leave-cast-concerned/ Discussion Topic: Author and Former Cast Member Bruce Edwards – Main Street Magic Shop Amazon – https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09J7HJ851 Barnes and Noble – https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/nothing-up-my-sleeve-but-pixie-dust-bruce-edwards/1140355973 Etsy – https://www.etsy.com/shop/bruceedwardsbooks

The stages had audioanimatronic humans and household appliances showing how appliances and electronics advanced about every 20 years from the turn of the century to the "modern" era of the early 1960s. The audience stopped in front of each stage while the characters joked with each other, described life at the time in history, and demonstrated their kitchen. This ride originated at the 1964 New York World's Fair and was installed at Disneyland after the fair closed. In 1974, Carousel of Progress was moved to Florida's Walt Disney World, and the show building was used for America Sings and Innoventions. The PeopleMovera train ride that ran along an elevated trackFirst built in 1961A great way to relax and enjoy a unique view of TomorrowlandClosed in 1995Rocket RodsPeople mover closed in 1995 as part of a Tomorrowland overhaulRepurposed trackDragster-style thrill attraction - more thrilling than PMOverhead view of TLQuick launchSlowed down at every turn - they lost GM sponsor/budget - didn’t build in banked turns on the flat PM trackSpeed up/slow downNot thrilling enough/Too thrillingLong wait timesMechanical issuesInfrastructure wasn’t altered to accommodate the quick/slow - stress on track & vehiclesAfter weeks went down for 3 months to try to fixStill constantly breaking downTrack and structure was breaking down, making it unsafe - cracks, broken concrete - lawsuitClosed again in 2000 to reopen Spring 2001Didn’t reopen - announced permanent closureSad skeleton in the middle of TLVideopolis (1985–1995): A nighttime dance club targeted at young adults. Videopolis featured television monitors playing modern music videos and also hosted live musical acts. It also featured its very own snack bar, "Yumz". Videopolis was converted into an amphitheatre in 1990 and was renamed Fantasyland Theatre in 1995.Mike Fink Keel Boats (1956–1994, 1996–1997): The Mike Fink Keel Boats were based on two episodes of the Davy Crockett miniseries which aired on the Disneyland TV show in 1955 -- "Davy Crockett's Keel Boat Race" (Nov 16) and "Davy Crockett and the River Pirates" (December 14). The ride was named after Mike Fink, the "King of the River" who lost the keel boat race. The two 38-foot boats, the Gullywhumper and the Bertha Mae, were the actual props that had been used in making the TV shows a few months earlier. The boats were free-floating and traveled around Tom Sawyer Island Riders would sit on benches either inside the cabin or on the roof of the cabin.1997, the Disneyland Gullywhumper boat began to rock side to side. It capsized, dumping a full boatload of passengers into the Rivers of America, leaving several with minor injuries. The boat was removed from the waters for inspection and neither the Gullywhumper nor the Bertha Mae returned for the next operating season. The Bertha Mae was put up on Disney's eBay Auction Site and was sold for $15,000 to Richard Kraft, and was later featured in a scene from Kraft's documentary Finding Kraftland. It was billed as an unseaworthy craft. In 2003, the Gullywhumper returned to the Rivers of America as a prop and is moored on Tom Sawyer Island, where it is visible from the Mark Twain Riverboat, the Sailing Ship Columbia, and the Explorer Canoes.Swiss Family Treehouse (1962–1999): Treehouse based on the film Swiss Family Robinson. Rethemed as Tarzan's Treehouse in 1999 and still open under that name.Jolly Trolley (1993–2003): The Jolly Trolley was a Trolley providing transportation from one end of Toontown to the other. Closed due to crowded walkways presenting major safety hazards, meaning the trolleys could only operate on days with sparse crowds. The Jolly Trolley's track is still present in the main walkway of Toontown, and one car stands stationary in the middle of Toontown. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The Bootstrappers spend most of their day wandering around New Orleans Square in Disneyland, singing a wide variety of their favorite sea shanties including Yo-Ho, Yo-Ho a Pirate’s Life for Me. Sometimes, if you time it just right, you can catch them on the high seas, or the Rivers of America, on the lower deck of the Sailing Ship Columbia. There is no better place to catch a pirate band than on a pirate ship at sea after all. Be sure to check your times guide; typically, The Bootstrappers can be found in front of Pirates of the Caribbean in New Orleans Square, but they may have a special performance on the Sailing Ship Columbia!!! I just couldn’t resist!! Lets’ head to the lower deck for The Bootstrappers on the Sailing Ship Columbia at Disneyland Summer 2019. Be sure to subscribe to the youtube channel

**Rated PG-Headphones Suggested** This episode begins with the RETURN OF SAUL and his Disney park adventures. Join Saul as he experiences a trip through Florida's Fantasyland. Of course, Saul's journey through Fantasyland is a tad short on the fantasy and we can safely say that he visited something more like Scaryland. Next, The Meandering Minnie and I enjoy Philharmagic where we experience a bit more fantasy than poor ole' Saul. After leaving Fantasyland, we travel outside of the Disney bubble and hit the streets of Orlando to explore the creepiness of off-property souvenir shops. No comforting or pleasant souvenirs are found. Instead, we discover some of the oddest objects on Earth. Last, The Meandering Mouse returns to DISNEYLAND to explore some sound oddities and take a ride on The Sailing Ship Columbia. In the sound oddity portion of the Disneyland audio, we stumble upon Maynard, the rather famous but odd Disneyland cast member, as he tells us a really weird story on Main Street. We also stop in New Orleans Square and discover that Californians have NO rhythm whatsoever while we listen to a live street act. This episode is packed full of goodies so get ready for some fun!!!
