In this episode, we explore the evolution and achievements of Scotland's Emergency Medical Retrieval Service (EMRS), a lifeline for critically unwell patients in rural and remote areas. The EMRS, established in 2004, has transformed emergency care in Scotland, expanding its reach nationally in 2010 and opening a second base in Aberdeen in 2019. This service operates within the Scottish Specialist Transport and Retrieval (ScotSTAR) division of the Scottish Ambulance Service, providing vital pre-hospital critical care and retrieval services. Our discussion today centres around a comprehensive retrospective cohort study covering the first decade of the EMRS's national service. We'll examine key findings, including the significant number of taskings, the crucial role of geospatial modelling in reducing transfer times, and the service's targeted support for socio-economically deprived areas. We will delve into the critical factors associated with clinical deterioration and pre-hospital mortality and learn how the EMRS addresses these challenges. We'll also explore the future directions for the service and its ongoing efforts to improve emergency medical care and address health inequalities across Scotland. The paper that Ryan mentions in the interview on: Equity in the provision of helicopter emergency medical services in the United Kingdom: a geospatial analysis using indices of multiple deprivation can be found here: https://sjtrem.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s13049-024-01248-4

From Antonin Scalia's sudden death, to four new justices, a leaked opinion draft, the overturning of abortion rights, and the pandemic-era introduction of live audio for oral arguments—a lot has happened at the Supreme Court in the past decade and Cases and Controversies has been there for all of it. The Bloomberg Law podcast started in very lo-fi way in a virtual closet has grown over the years as a staple of Supreme Court coverage with studio space with really good microphones, its own producer in David Schultz, and up to three hosts offering behind-the-scene takes, and insight and analysis of court happenings and all of the turbulence that's gone along with it. Created by Tom Taylor, Bloomberg Law's former high court correspondent and now its newsroom's chief of staff, Cases and Controversies marks 10 years this term with a special edition. Taylor and current co-hosts Kimberly Robinson, Greg Stohr, and Lydia Wheeler offer their observations on heightened public interest in the court, what's changed for the justices and how the court operates, and what may be in store in coming years. Keeping a long-term relationship/marriage happily together throughout your twenties and into your thirties is not an easy thing to do (as so many of us know). The majority of us spend a large part of our twenties just trying to figure out what it means to be an adult! We are continuously learning what traits and characteristics we like, what our values are and over all the kind of person we want to be and the vision we have for our future and often, by the time we approach the age of 30, that vision has changed, maybe more than once.Clarice Harrison, (also known as Outzilla) is a Mindset & Meditation Coach who, during her twenties transformed herself from an anxious people pleaser, into a happy, calm and confident women all while maintaining her relationship of over 10 years.Clarice shared how working on yourself and putting yourself first can create huge benefits for both your partner and your relationship. How to create self trust and how that self trust will keep you calm, grounded and stop an over reaction, even in the most stressful of times throughout your relationship. Finally, we discuss the issue of why so many relationships that began in the couple's late teens/early twenties end up breaking down by the time they reach the age of 30 and how we can not only make sure our relationships & marriages survive this time, but thrive and have the most loving, fulfilling and happy connection.Instagram:* @outzilla* @charlottejonespresentsWebsite:* outzilla.co.ukLink to E-book mentioned in introduction:* https://www.outzilla.co.uk/product-page/e-book-out-of-comfort-into-living

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Results from the First Decade Review, published by Lizka on May 13, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Tl;dr: The Decade Review happened: Forum users voted on which posts from the first decade of effective altruism they found most useful and important and reviewed the posts to explain what they appreciated. We're awarding $12,500 in prizes to authors and reviewers. The distribution of prizes to authors was based on your votes, the results of which are linked. I'm using this post to highlight some aspects of the winning posts and reviews. I encourage more discussion in the comments (and in new posts!). Prizes for posts We're awarding a total of $10,000 to the top posts (and $2,500 for the top reviews). Note that some authors chose to donate their prizes. Summary We're awarding $10,000 to authors of the posts, broken down as follows. $1,500 to Hauke Hillebrandt and John G. Halstead ($750 each) for Growth and the case against randomista development $1000 each to Helen for Effective Altruism is a Question (not an ideology) Jai for 500 Million, But Not A Single One More Greg Lewis for Beware surprising and suspicious convergence Nate Soares for On Caring Luisa Rodriguez for two posts(!) : What is the likelihood that civilizational collapse would directly lead to human extinction (within decades)? and How bad would nuclear winter caused by a US-Russia nuclear exchange be? $500 each to David Althaus and Tobias Baumann ($250 each) for Reducing long-term risks from malevolent actors Will MacAskill for Are we living at the most influential time in history? Holly Elmore for We are in triage every second of every day “EA applicant” for After one year of applying for EA jobs: It is really, really hard to get hired by an EA organisation Brian Tomasik for Why Charities Usually Don't Differ Astronomically in Expected Cost-Effectiveness Julia Wise for You have more than one goal, and that's fine Peter Singer for Peter Singer – Famine, Affluence, and Morality First prize ($1500): Growth and the case against randomista development by Hauke Hillebrandt and John Halstead Randomista development is “an approach to development economics [that focuses on] interventions which can be tested by randomised controlled trials (RCTs).” This is popular in effective altruism, but, as this post argues, might systematically undervalue or miss the interventions that have been responsible for some of the biggest improvements ever in quality of life. In particular, the authors discuss the importance of economic growth for human welfare and argue that the welfare gains from increasing GDP per capita in a country are so large that they outweigh the benefits of randomista development programs by orders of magnitude. As a result, they argue, researchers and grantmakers should spend much more time looking for interventions that can promote growth. The post also discusses objections and explores the limitations of GDP/growth, but emphasizes that this topic is under-prioritized by people in effective altruism. I like a lot of things about this post. I had to print the post out and read it carefully (pen, highlighters, and all), and don't claim expertise in the subjects involved, but I understand enough to see that it's making some important and true points (although you should also read the comments on the post for a discussion on potential weaknesses and more disputable claims). I think more people should explore the value and tractability of economic growth, and more people might want to read this post as an introduction to that subject. Beyond that, it's also a good example to follow if you're considering writing or researching something. So I'm glad this post has won the first prize. Or, as Maxime CdS put it, [...] this post makes a very good point in a very important conversation, namely that we can do b...

What is the power of writing to carry a voice, or many voices, particularly defiant ones? In this final episode, we return to the impetus for this series, the exhibition Stories of Resistance, as an invitation to consider the medium of words and storytelling. Artist Banu Cennetoğlu and poet Treasure Shields Redmond discuss their work attending to the writings of American Civil Rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer and Kurdish freedom fighter Gurbetelli Ersöz, respectively. They acknowledge the responsibility of caring for the words of activists, especially those who gave their lives to struggle for what's right.Banu Cennetoğlu is a cross-disciplinary artist whose practice incorporates methods of collecting and archiving and enquires into the politics of the production, classification, and distribution of knowledge. Her work Gurbet's Diary (27.07.1995–08.10.1997) inscribed words from Gurbetelli Ersöz's diary—which Ersöz kept while she was a Kurdish freedom fighter before she was killed—onto 145 press-ready lithographic limestone slabs. Cennetoğlu lives and works in Istanbul, where she founded BAS, an artist-run space dedicated to artists' books and printed matter.Dr. Treasure Shields Redmond is a St. Louis metro-based poet, performer, and educator. She has been featured at the Nuyorican Poets Café, and published poetry in such notable anthologies as Bum Rush the Page: A Def Poetry Jam, Breaking Ground: A Reader Celebrating Cane Canem's First Decade, and in journals that include Obsidian and The African American Review. A Cave Canem fellow, Treasure has received an MFA from the University of Memphis, and a PhD from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.-As a major component of the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis's exhibition Stories of Resistance, Radio Resistance assembles the voices of intersecting local and global agents of change. Artists featured in the exhibition are paired with figures from the past, present, and future of St. Louis, coming together to transmit messages of dissent. Eleven episodes will be released over the course of the exhibition, amplifying shared struggles, collective dreams, and models of individual and group action. Using a historically rebellious medium, Radio Resistance broadcasts social narratives of defiance and hope.Selections of Radio Resistance will be broadcast on St. Louis on the Air, the noontime talk program hosted by Sarah Fenske on St. Louis Public Radio. Full episodes will be released biweekly in a listening station at CAM, and on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Stitcher. A publication celebrating Stories of Resistance, featuring episode highlights, will be released later this year.

In this week's episode of the Get Lit Minute, we spotlight American poet and professor, Camille T. Dungy. Included in this episode is a reading of her poem "Characteristics of Life." Addressing the paucity of African American poets in anthologies of nature poetry, Dungy stated in a 2010 interview for the Oakland Tribune, “I miss seeing writers of color in the conversation. Until we have greater variety in the conversation, it is not a conversation—it is a monologue.” To that end, Dungy edited Black Nature: Four Centuries of African American Nature Poetry (2009), which won a Northern California Book Award and was nominated for an NAACP Image Award. She was also co-editor of From the Fishouse: An Anthology of Poems that Sing, Rhyme, Resound, Syncopate, Alliterate, and Just Plain Sound Great (2009), and assistant editor for Gathering Ground: A Reader Celebrating Cave Canem’s First Decade (2006). Dungy's most recent work includes the essay collection Guidebook to Relative Strangers: Journeys into Race, Motherhood, and History (2017). Support the show (https://getlit.org/donate/)

In this episode of The Best Practices Show, Kirk and the ACT Dental team speak with one of their favorite clients, Dr. Kevin Groth. Kevin talks about his time working with ACT Dental and how they have coached him as a young dentist. Over the course of the conversation, Kevin describes what it is like being fresh in private practice, the growing pains of a newbie, and how to leverage your connections into mentors to grow as an individual. Only newly into his thirties, Kevin displays great character and resolve for someone so young. Having spent time with the ACT team, Kevin talks about how each of them contributed to his development as a dentist in meaningful ways. But all of them, he says, exhibit a few like traits that any young professional can take heed to model for themselves. Kevin lists a fearlessness, a passion for continuing to learn, and a desire to work hard as key motivators. But perhaps most valuable to the young dentist is the power and magnitude of being mentored by great people. It's by being coachable—and being determined about it—that you can access the kind of teaching that's most consistent with the goals and vision for your practice and your life. Finally, Kevin cannot harp on this enough, you need to understand what it is you want out of your career. Without a grasp on this, it is impossible to chart a path forward. But in all of the striving there are two key things to keep in mind, and they are lessons that Kevin has held onto dearly. The first is a poignant quote from Kirk, that "the happiest people have the simplest lives". And the second is that "having the freedom to do what you want with your time is the greatest luxury, and we should not forsake that in the moment". Kevin shares a brief story of walking up a path with his daughter and how he didn't want that moment to end. It's a profound discovery to find meaning in the small things, but Kevin and the team urge a sense of purpose, and for that purpose to drive you in everything you do. Main Takeaways: The older generation needs to know that millennials are jaded. Millennials don't want to kill themselves for a retirement life: they want to enjoy their lives now. Five characteristics of the dentists at the top of their game: 1) They started their careers out of dental school without anything. 2) They are all passionate about continuing education. 3) They actually apply knowledge learned. 4) They all have had amazing mentors. 5) They all have an amazing work ethic. Do not let fear dictate your ability to be the best and provide the best care. You don't have to start out being great—look for lessons and be willing to learn. Get as much experience—from a variety of sources—as you possibly can. You have to make the hard decisions that will allow your practice to sync up with your vision. Engage in discussions where you promote vulnerability, so that people can learn. Emphasize what you want to spell out the direction going forward. There isn't a mentorship booth—you have to seek them out. You can inspire people with small gestures, like a thank you note or a beloved book. You have to pursue the mentors. Quotes: “My main concern was my team.” (5:30) “I think millennials are going to change the way we do things.” (11:00) “I was really intentional about picking up as much as possible from all these different practices.” (14:30) “Just take the action and start—don't be afraid to fail.” (17:45) “It's okay to let a toddler fall. The best teachers allow those moments to happen.” (20:15) “Education is everything, but you have to structure what you want to learn, too.” (25:00) “The happiest people I know have the simplest lives.” (26:20) “Falling in love with perfection is dangerous. The important thing is excellence.” (30:30) “Ask a mentor; ‘Tell me something I don't know about myself.'” (35:10) “This is what happens when you have a team that aligns with what you want.” (39:15) “When you are a mentee, your job is to inspire...

Aaron Klein is the co-founder and CEO of Riskalyze, one of the most popular risk alignment tools in the financial services industry today, whose mission is to empower the world to invest fearlessly by pinpointing an investor's risk number to build just the right portfolio for every individual. He is also the co-founder of Hope Takes Root, an initiative that is changing the future for orphans and at-risk kids in Ethiopia. Listen in as Aaron and I discuss how the global pandemic has launched us into a "risk-first" decade, why financial advisors without a risk alignment tool in 2020 are like advisors without computers in 2000, and why using a quantitative approach to risk assessment is superior to a qualitative one. You'll hear how the Risk Number® can help financial advisors harness investor behavior rather than change it, and his single best piece of advice for making ERISA fiduciaries smarter by getting participants fully bought into their investments. You'll also hear his personal story about international adoption, and what led him and his wife to co-found Hope Takes Root.

Dana Denis-Smith joins me this week for a special episode celebrating Women’s History Month where she shares with us her first decade in business and how she also found the time to create the First One Hundred Years, a project celebrated the centenary of women in law throughout 2019 and is followed by the Next 100 Years. Dana is a serial entrepreneur, former lawyer and international journalist. In 2010, she founded Obelisk Support, a London-based alternative legal services provider built around flexible, highly- skilled ex-City lawyers. During this episode Dana shares how her childhood, contrasting careers and time in India inspired her to becoming an entrepreneur and what the first ten years in business has taught her. “It’s about the methodology and the finish but then its also about how targeted you are and really at the end of the day — how motivated you are in seeing the goal being achieved, no matter how difficult it is to achieve it” - Dana Denis-Smith This week on She Rebel Radio : Why she retrained as a lawyer whilst being a journalist. How India has been a source of inspiration and place where her business ideas have been formed. Why spotting the problem is not enough, it’s about distilling and creating powerful solutions. How her passion for optimising and problem solving as well as people and disliking waste created a powerful business model for her. Why she has never been afraid of failure and trusted whatever happened would make her a bigger and better person. What inspired her (and how she found the time) to start the First 100 Years Project around her business and motherhood. What is next for women and entrepreneurship and how she plans to continue to support women founders in the legal profession. Additional Quote : ‘’The legal profession and journalism was such a contrast but it gave me a sharper focus of what I was good at. Sometimes it’s good to be a fish out of water as then you realise you like the water and where you can flourish ” - Dana Denis-Smith Resources https://first100years.org.uk/ Connect with Dana https://twitter.com/ddenissmith https://www.linkedin.com/in/ddenissmith/ https://www.instagram.com/ddenissmith/ Connect with Obelisk https://obelisksupport.com/ https://twitter.com/ObeliskSupport https://www.linkedin.com/company/obelisk-support/ https://www.instagram.com/obelisksupport/ Join our Free Webinar : Why Women’s Entrepreneurship is the New Women’s Movement www.luluminns.com/women Join the She Rebellion! This month's selection is book I of Machiavelli's Discourses on the First Decade of Titus Livius. If you think this title refers to a dry academic commentary on an ancient historian, think again. Machiavelli is one of the most brilliant and original political thinkers in human history, and this is his by far best work. I first read it at the suggestion of (or rather under orders from) my friend Sam Francis, who (like James Burnham and other political analysts) viewed it as the political equivalent of sacred writ. Machiavelli takes the first ten books of Livy's History of Rome as a backdrop, but he talks as much about the Italian and European history of his own time as he does of ancient Rome. Some knowledge of Livy's stories is helpful, but several of the translations have sufficient notes, if you have forgotten about Tarquin the Proud and Brutus the liberator. The most useful edition is the Oxford paperback for under $10 on Amazon, with a Kindle version at $7.55. There are other good translations at lower prices, including Kindle editions of all his political works for $.99. Between 1838 and 1841, an enterprising London teenager broke repeatedly into Buckingham Palace, sitting on the throne, eating from the kitchen, and posing a bewildering nuisance to Queen Victoria's courtiers, who couldn't seem to keep him out. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll describe the exploits of Edward Jones -- and the severe measures that were finally taken to stop them. We'll also salute some confusing flags and puzzle over an extraterrestrial musician. Intro: Tourists who remove rocks from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park face a legendary curse. On Episode 3 of the podcast, we interview Rev. Janet Watrous. She is an Episcopal priest, in her fortieth year of Ordination. Janet entered into seminary at the height of the Women’s Movement of the 1970’s. She is considered to be “one of the earliest women ordained into the priesthood of our [Episcopal] church”. Janet talks about her experiences of growing up in the Church and finding her own “calling” of full-time vocational church work. Janet was in the charter class of Kirkland College in New York and graduated from The University of East Anglia, in Norwich, England. She graduated with her Master of Divinity from the Episcopal Theological School in Cambridge, MA. Janet is featured in the book, Women Priests in the Episcopal Church: The Experience of the First Decade by Mary S. Donovan. She has served in local parish churches and for twenty years as the Chaplain at St. Mary’s School in Raleigh, NC. “Live into the change” – Rev. Janet Watrous.
