"Getting paid playing with Serena Williams on a daily basis, I don't care if it's in Palm Beach Gardens or a stadium, it doesn't get much than that." Sascha Bajin joined the TENNIS.com Podcast with Nina Pantic and Irina Falconi while he was in New York for the US Open. The 34-year-old has a decorated resume, having worked with Serena Williams, Victoria Azarenka, Caroline Wozniacki, Sloane Stephens, Naomi Osaka and now, Kristina Mladenovic. The German reflects on how he got his start as a 21-year-old hitting partner for one of the greatest athletes of all time. He would be part of Serena's team for 13 of her 23 Grand Slam wins. He explains how he made the shift to coaching, as he was in Osaka's player box as her coach for her 2018 US Open and 2019 Australian Open victories. Coaching was a natural fit for him thanks to a selfless demeanor that makes him eager to help his player with everything and anything she needs, from picking up laundry to figuring out how to win a match during a changeover. The 2018 WTA Coach of the Year has come a long way, and he's driven to do even more in the months, and years, ahead. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
On this week's episode, host Jon Wertheim talks with Sascha Bajin, current coach of Kristina Mladenovic and former coach of Naomi Osaka. Wertheim and Bajin also discuss whether he would consider coaching a men's player; how he handles information when switching between different players; what he has learned from some of his former clients, such as Serena Williams and more. Bajin also talks about his forthcoming book, Strengthen Your Mind, which will be published in Japanese in July and details how he transformed Osaka's mindset and gives insight into his years working with Serena. Ben and Courtney catch up on the happenings on the tours over the past couple months, which has been dominated by the story of no one dominating. What's to explain the spread of unique winners on both tours? And is the real story, perhaps, the youth movement? We discuss some of the more intriguing individual plotlines from this stretch as well, including Naomi Osaka splitting with her coach Sascha Bajin, how players like her will adjust to clay, Bianca Andreescu's mature breakout, and Denis Shapovalov's rapping and its reception. Then onto the older guard, we talk about Roger Federer's relaxed, low-stakes mood going into clay, and if that could ever be possible for Serena Williams to enjoy in her career. Then we discuss the problematic fave status of John Isner, the coup of ATP chief executive Chris Kermode, the new-look Miami Open, and the slumping Daria Kasatkina. As always, thanks for liking us on Facebook (leave comments on the episode thread! We chat about the Osaka-Tsitsipas social media mess, as well as Naomi's words on her split with Sascha Bajin. Finally, we try to grapple with the mess that Martina Navratilova has gotten herself into. 03:26 Recapping a long list of winners the last fortnight 06:25 The dire Long Island Open gets a lift 13:52 Bend it like Bencic in Dubai, if you can! 20:14 Our Québécois fav busts out in Rio 27:44 Tsonga to miss Indian Wells due to Sickle Cell Trait 31:29 What in the hell was Stefanos thinking?! 36:47 Osaka talks Bajin breakup 45:18 Martina Navratilova and her controversial op-ed 68:55 Sometimes you need to call something by its name
In this episode of The Passing Shot, your tennis catch-up podcast, Joel & Kim look back on what has been a jam-packed last couple of weeks in the tennis season. On the WTA side, we discuss all the major events going on at the back-to-back Premiers in Doha and Dubai whilst on the ATP circuit we cover the 500s in Rotterdam and Rio as well as all the 250s in Europe and South America. Elsewhere, we have a look at what's been a very productive week for Dan Evans in Del Ray whilst we get our heads around the surprise split between Naomi Osaka and her coach Sascha Bajin, the current debate surrounding the newly reformed ITF World Tennis Tour and what records were broken at the New York Open (clue: it involves serving and John Isner).
On this week's Serve and Volley, Nick Hilton and Pavel Linshits are back to discuss the last week in tennis and a couple of juicy controversial subjects. THE BASELINE: starting with Gael Monfils' win in Rotterdam and taking in Dan Evans' run in Delray Beach and Naomi Osaka's break with coach Sascha Bajin. BACKHANDED COMPLIMENTS: This week we're looking at Nick Kyrgios. One of the games most exciting players or a squandered talent? COURTING CONTROVERSY: Is the Davis Cup revamp a good or bad thing? Three and a half years after an extraordinary title run in Toronto, Belinda Bencic has produced another one, this time in Dubai. On The Tennis Podcast, Catherine Whitaker, David Law and Matt Roberts discuss what makes Bencic such a brilliant player, and wonder whether she can start producing these exceptional weeks more often. Elsewhere in Dubai, Naomi Osaka lost her first match without Sascha Bajin and afterwards gave an emotional press conference. Is there cause for concern? Or are we just not used to a player being so in touch with their emotions? And who might her next coach be? David has a hunch...On the men’s side, Dan Evans came so close to winning his first title, but fell short against Radu Albot in Delray Beach. What made it such a fun match to watch? And how much can Evans achieve this year? In Rio, Felix Auger-Aliassime made his move by reaching the final. Why is he being tipped for stardom? And tribute is paid to the victorious Laslo Djere, who has tragically lost both of his parents to cancer. Finally, Stefanos Tsitsipas won his second career title in Marseille. How significant is it that he’s backing up his form from Australia? The Tennis Podcast is produced weekly throughout the year and daily at the Grand Slam tournaments, thanks to our Kickstarter backers. It is produced in association with The Telegraph. This week on the Lucky Letcord Podcast Richard Pagliaro joins to talk about Naomi Osaka's stunning split with coach Sascha Bajin. He believes that the sky is not falling for the World No.1. We also discuss the impressive title run of Gael Monfils at Rotterdam while also making a point not to overlook the notable performances put in by Stan Wawrinka and Kei Nishikori. We take a peek at the latin swing and admit that we are both mightily impressed by Marco Cecchinato's clay-court game. And we wonder how good American Reilly Opelka might become as we discuss his breakthrough title at the New York Open. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
After a few weeks apart, David Law, Catherine Whitaker and Matt Roberts are back together on this week’s podcast, and the only place to start is Naomi Osaka’s split with Sascha Bajin. What could be the reasons behind it ? Should we have seen it coming? And how important is it that she’s prioritising her mental health over her on court success? On a similar theme, is Simona Halep on a mission to prove she can win big without a coach? Her trial period with Thierry Van Cleemput was unsuccessful, but she still reached the final in Doha. What makes her conqueror Elise Mertens such a brilliant player? Elsewhere, the biggest men’s results from the past fortnight are discussed. How good could New York Open champion Reilly Opelka become? What makes Stan Wawrinka’s return to form so uplifting? Will Gael Monfils kick on from his win in Rotterdam? And why should we be paying close attention to the form of Daniil Medvedev? The Tennis Podcast will be weekly throughout 2019 and daily at all the Grand Slam tournaments. It is produced in association with The Telegraph.
