In this episode, we get into the military transition of Tami Thacker, a former Navy corpsman whose journey epitomizes the essence of service and resilience. Her story is a profound exploration, from a tumultuous childhood to becoming a trailblazer in the armed forces. Tami's early years were marked by hardship and instability. Despite these challenges, she found her calling in the Navy, a decision that set her on a path of remarkable achievements and personal growth. Tami's spent 12 years in the Navy and got out in 2011 as a Senior Chief. Her naval career is a narrative of breaking barriers. She distinguished herself as the first female corpsman assigned to the Marine Corps Basic Reconnaissance Course, a role that tested her mettle and underscored her commitment to serving alongside the best. Her experiences in the Navy not only shaped her as a service member but also prepared her for the challenges of transitioning back to civilian life. This transition, a journey familiar to many veterans, was a period of adaptation and self-discovery, highlighting the critical need for veteran assistance and support in adjusting to life after the military. Today, Tami is the Veterans Services Coordinator at the University of California – Riverside. She is passionately involved in helping other veterans navigate their post-military lives. Her work focuses on providing guidance in career planning for veterans, advocating for mental health resources, and aiding in adjusting to civilian life. Her dedication to veteran assistance is a testament to her enduring commitment to the veteran community, offering a beacon of hope and practical support to those embarking on their own transitions. On this week's episode, we have chef Russ Zito. Russ has been a culinary instructor at Johnson & Wales University for 26 years. You might have heard our "What is a Chef" mini-episode.Chef Zito was one of my instructors and my senior advisor when I was a student at Johnson & Wales University. But a lot has changed since I graduated in 1998. I wanted to find out how the school, and the curriculum, have changed (or stayed the same) since I've been gone. He talks about the newer courses and classes dealing with things like sustainability, dietetics, and entrepreneurship. They even have a garden there now. I asked his opinion about who was a good fit for culinary school. We also talked about his thoughts on community college as opposed to a top-tier culinary university. If you're a current or former culinary student, or are thinking about going to culinary school, this is the episode for you.  Erik has always loved music, performing, dance and laughter. He didn't like school. Erik's mother, Gerri, was very clear from the beginning  on how exactly he was to get through high school. As an english teacher, she knew the benefits of a great education and wasn't about to let him slip through her fingers. Nor was she going to take any part in his decision to not get out of bed, which meant, she wasn't going to be responsible for him not graduating. She was very specific when she said she wouldn't be attending any parent teacher conferences or discussions when Erik had issues at school. It was his responsibility. If he had to repeat a grade, "he'd have no one to blame but himself."That said, Erik and his mother were extremely close. She was a devoted  and committed mother.  She found the joy and humor if life. Having a role model like his mom has helped him raising his two daughters.  Erik says one important lesson he learned from his mom is  "she was present. She was not 'unavailable' when she was physically present." With all the distractions that we have in life now, this one memory of his mother really helps him with his girls. They are his priority when they're together.Looking back, Erik recalls how his parents fostered self reliance and individuality. His mother taught english at night to help others who wanted to empower themselves.   She often worked with bartenders, cashiers and workers who hoped to get a business degree and  change their lives.Erik The Travel Guy : like and subscribe to his youtube channelhttps://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=erik+the+travel+guy
