The entire Auckland train network has been suspended following a large toxic blaze at a scrapyard in the suburb of Favona. It has caused the evacuation of the city's Train Control Centre which is in the zone of the poisonous fumes. AT says train services will be disrupted until further notice. The evacuation follows an earlier emergency message alert which asked residents of neighbourhoods south of the fire to stay away from the smoke and keep doors and windows closed. RNZ reporter Felix Walton is at Penrose Rail station.

In this week's episode, we had the pleasure of chatting with Kristen Hoard, a uber-talented metal sculptor whose work is quite elaborate and innovative. Her pieces are made from recycled materials, which she finds in Scrapyards and transforms into amazing works of art in her garage studio, equipped with all sorts of cool tools like welders, plasma cutters, drill presses, and grinders. One thing that really stood out to me was how Kristen incorporates LED lighting and fire into her pieces to create a whole other level of depth and dimension. When the lights are turned on, the artwork is completely transformed with an amazing light show. Seeing her work, it's hard to believe that Kristen didn't start out as an artist. In fact, it was a psychic friend who saw metal sculptures in her aura and suggested she take a metal class. And, that class ended up changing her life and she's been creating amazing metal art ever since. Throughout our chat, Kristen emphasized the importance of experimentation and finding your own voice as an artist. Overall, Kristen's art-infused life is a testament to the power of creativity and following your passions, even if it takes a bit of courage to get there. So keep on experimenting and creating! In this episode, Chris welcomes back Lisa from the "I Love That Movie" podcast to discuss the first volume of one of her favorite manga, “Battle Angel Alita”. Yukito Kishiro creates what many consider to be his magnum opus with this seminal manga series. In a dump in the lawless settlement of Scrapyard, far beneath the mysterious space city of Zalem, disgraced cyber-doctor Daisuke Ido makes a strange find: the detached head of a cyborg woman who has lost all her memories. He names her Alita and equips her with a powerful new body, the Berserker. While Alita remembers no details of her former life, a moment of desperation reawakens in her nerves the legendary school of martial arts known as Panzer Kunst. In a place where there is no justice but what people make for themselves, Alita decides to become a hunter-killer, tracking down and taking out those who prey on the weak. But can she hold onto her humanity as she begins to revel in her own bloodlust? Last week, Lauren Bianchi and Chuck Stark, two teachers at George Washington High School on the Southeast Side of Chicago, were on the verge of losing their jobs. In what Chicago Teachers Union officers suspect was an act of retaliation from Mayor Lori Lightfoot, Chicago Public Schools recommended that Bianchi and Stark be fired for their involvement in the student-, teacher-, and community-led effort to stop the relocation of the General Iron metal shredder from the wealthy Northside neighborhood of Lincoln Park to a site half a mile from their school. With the union and their community behind them, though, the Chicago Board of Education issued a stunning rejection of Chicago Public Schools officials' recommendation to fire the two teachers. In this min-cast, we talk to Bianchi and Stark about the struggle to stop General Iron and the importance of teachers serving the needs of their communities. Additional links/info below...
