The Art of Making Things Happen (Bluefishing) Steve Sims

When writer / director  Seth Ferranti received a twenty-five year LSD kingpin conviction, after faking his suicide and landing on the US Marshals Top-15 Most Wanted list, he thought his life was over. As a first time, non-violent offender, the lengthy sentence attracted media attention from The Washington Post, Rolling Stone, The Washington Times, and others.    Turning despair into drive, Ferranti earned an associates, bachelors, and masters degree while in prison and started penning prison and gangster stories for VICE, Don Diva, FEDS, Hoopshype and others. He became a true-crime publisher from the cell block and built a website and publishing house,  Gorilla Convict, that documented stories that the mainstream media was not willing to share.   In February 2015, after serving 21 years, he was released from the Bureau of Prisons, to seek his fortune. Back in the world Ferranti continued his writing career as a journalist penning pieces for VICE, OZY, The Daily Beast, Dazed, MERRY JANE, and features for Penthouse and Real Crime Magazines, among others. He also embarked on his true passion, filmmaking.    Ferranti joined forces with Shawn Rech and Transitions Studios to make WHITE BOY, a top ten Netflix feature documentary on Richard Wershe Jr. Seth also starred in the season one finale of VICE's I WAS A TEENAGE FELON. Modeling himself as the Quentin Tarantino of documentaries,  he currently has four documentary projects in production and three in post at his studio OUTLAW FILMS. It appears there is no stopping him…

William Leonard Pickard is a former research associate in neurobiology at Harvard Medical School, Harvard fellow in drug policy at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, and Deputy Director of the Drug Policy Analysis Program at UCLA. His 1996 prediction of the fentanyl epidemic was published by RAND in The Future of Fentanyl and Other Synthetic Opioids. In 2015 Pickard published The Rose of Paracelsus: On Secrets & Sacraments, a 656-page autobiography that blends fiction and nonfiction. The book centers around six chemists in an international drug organization. One of the Six tells Pickard, the book's narrator, that the making of psychedelics is not just following a recipe or formula but requires "the requisite spirit ... the purest intent, a flawless diamond morality". He says it's the same spirit described in Thomas De Quincey and Jorge Luis Borges's short stories about Paracelsus, the 16th-century physician and alchemist of Basel who resurrected a rose from its ashes: "there could be no creation for lack of faith and the trust of gold". Writing while incarcerated, Pickard wrote the entire book with pencil and paper. In an interview with Seth Ferranti, Pickard recounted: "The Rose was handwritten in two years, without notes and based on recollection, but seemed too trivial to honor the reader. I destroyed the work in minutes, then began again. It took another three years to compose, then a year to edit the 656 pages." Readings of The Rose of Paracelsus were presented at the University of Greenwich in London in June 2017. Readers included British artist and Resonance FM radio host Simon Tyszko, SEED Restaurant founder Greg Sams and post-doctoral fellow in literature Neşe Devenot. In November 2016, British actor Dudley Sutton did readings of The Rose of Paracelsus at Reading Gaol, in Oscar Wilde's former cell. The Rose also has been reviewed by author and Psychedelic Museum founder Julian Vayne. In November 2017, readings from The Rose were presented at the Altered Conference Berlin, and in December 2017 The Rose was discussed on the major podcast The Joe Rogan Experience with Duncan Trussell. Season's Greetings n' Upful vibrations! Please welcome back to the show Dave from Dopey Podcast - now going by his gov't: David Manheim. After 5 years of my dedicated listening/contributing to Dopey, plus his epic, record-holding May 2020 appearance on Upful Life ep.033, and much correspondence between us in the interim, the man they call "Dopey Dave" and yours truly finally met in person, live n' direct at Park City Song Summit in Utah, Sept.2022. A cosmic convergence in stunningly beautiful environs where we were both there in our respective official capacities: as podcast hosts and journalists. We dropped in pretty deep on the last evening of the 4-day event. The revealing - at times intensely-personal - conversation was recorded from the cozy confines of my palatial suite at a high-falutin' ski lodge I really had no business staying. 2:30- Upful Update: Give Thanks n' Gratitude in 2022 10:30 - Introducing DAVID MANHEIM of Dopey Podcast, + a personal message why I feel called to produce programming on wellness/addiction/recovery. 22:00 - INTERVIEW w/ DOPEY DAVE (100min) 2:03:30 - Reflections on Dave + Vibe Junkie JAM Dopey Podcast is a unicorn program - a dark comedy on drug addiction and recovery, plus all the dumb sh*t that happens in between. (check out the profile on This American Life). In addition to holding down 2 full-time jobs (executive for Katz's Deli in NYC, father to two young daughters) - plus numerous losses and unfathomable grief - Dave has not missed a Friday night episode since he started the show with his late friend Chris over six years ago. Dopey recently celebrated it's 8 MILLIONTH DOWNLOAD, and has a legion of fiercely-loyal, dedicated listeners around the world, known colloquially as the Dopey Nation..  On Upful Life ep.033 in May 2020, for nearly 2 hours Dave meticulously and painstaking recounted his journey through heroin addiction of nearly 2 decades. We covered the nascent beginnings of Dopey pod, his relationship with Chris and his friend(s) sudden death, the tragedy and resurgence of Dopey in the wake of their passings, losing his family due to his addictions - then reuniting with them thru sobriety, and a whole lot more. (It's somewhat essential listening before tapping into ep.063, a  reconvergence 30 months on down the number line.) For Episode 063, we pick up where things left off, digging into the evolution of Dopey, embracing the transition to David Manheim, the legitimization of Dopey Podcast into professional wellness/recovery spaces, the concept of survivor's guilt, why Dave is a habitual line-stepper, and beyond.  After unpacking his magical interview with Carolyn 'Mountain Girl' Garcia, former wife of the late Jerry Garcia, we hear about his relationship with Seth Ferranti, renowned chronicler of outlaw/drug/psychedelic cultures. As we delve deeper beneath the surface, Dave and I chop it up on some real sh*t: more polarizing topics/Dopey guests like "Fentanyl Jay" and divisive shock-rapper Tom MacDonald. From there, things get a bit serious - and personal. The dialogue detours into family politics and our divergent approaches to conversations on the culture wars. Fret not, as friends we certainly course-correct for a properly warm n' fuzzy landing.   Thanks to David Manheim of Dopey Podcast for always bringing the Upful vibes! Shoutout to the Dopey Nation - WE SEE YOU!! If any Upful LIFE listeners would like to know more about the Dopey podcast, Dopey Nation, Dopey Zoom meetings, or link w/ Dave, send me an email or DM! Would you become a fugitive if you were looking at 25 years in Prison? Writer/Director Seth Ferranti did just that. He faked his suicide and landed on the US Marshals Top-15 Most Wanted list. He was finally captured and sentenced to 25 years in prison for selling marijuana and LSD. As a drug dealing teen, Ferranti sold drugs at 15 East Coast colleges, crisscrossing across five states. This story attracted media attention from The Washington Post, Rolling Stones, and others for this  first time, non-violent offender. Seth did not waste his time in prison. He found a passion for writing. He also studied the trade earning a associates, bachelors, and masters degree while in prison. With unlimited access to criminals and their stories Ferranti began crafting raw portrayals of prison life and crack era gangsters. Seth wrote 22 books while in prison, while also penning columns in VICE, Don Diva, and others. He began building his brand from prison, Gorilla Convict. Ferranti became a true crime publisher documenting stories mainstream media refused to share. He became the most prolific writer of the War on Drugs era.  In 2015, Seth was released from prison after 21 years behind bars. Seth hit the ground running, continuing his writing career penning pieces for VICE, The Daily Beast, and others. Ferranti teamed up  in Hollywood with Shawn Rech and Transitions Studios to make "White Boy", a feature documentary on Richard Wershe Jr., that aired on STARZ, and became a Top 10 hit on NETFLIX. There was also a movie "White Boy, Rick." He has over 5 documentary projects in production. This man is relentless. Adolph Coors III was in an enviable position. His grandfather had founded the Coors Brewing company, and by 1960, Adolph Coors III was the company's CEO. He had a wife and four children. He was one of Colorado's most influential business people. But that also made him a target. So when Adolph's car was discovered abandoned on Turkey Creek Bridge, just two miles from his home, the FBI quickly stepped in. Then Brandi tells us about the disappearance of Gail Katz. When Gail met Robert Bierenbaum, she thought she'd found the perfect guy. He was studying to become a doctor. He spoke multiple languages. He even flew planes. Their dates were incredibly romantic. They help keeping people off of alcohol through accountability! https://bitly.com/Soberlink About Dopey: Dopey Podcast is the world's greatest podcast on drugs, addiction and dumb shit. Chris and I were two IV heroin addicts who loved to talk about all the coke we smoked, snorted and shot, all the pills we ate, smoked, all the weed we smoked and ate, all the booze we consumed and all the consequences we suffered. After making the show for 2 and a half years, Chris tragically relapsed and died from a fentanyl overdose. Dopey continued on, at first to mourn the horrible loss of Chris, but then to continue our mission - which was at its core, to keep addicts and alcoholics company. Whether to laugh at our time in rehab, or cry at the worst missteps we made, Dopey tells the truth about drugs, addiction and recovery. We continually mine the universe for stories rife with debauchery and highlight serious drug taking and alcoholism. We also examine different paths toward addiction recovery. We shine a light on harm reduction and medication assisted treatment. We talk with celebrities and nobodies and stockpile stories to be the greatest one stop shop podcast on all things drugs, addiction, recovery and comedy!

I'd spent my late teenage years dealing weed and psychedelics while following the Grateful Dead, only to get busted by cops in Northern Virginia for selling LSD and marijuana at East Coast colleges back in 1991. In my youthful, defiant brain, I'd just been selectively disregarding the law, just like everyone else does — albeit on a scale that involved thousands of hits of acid. I'd get LSD sent to me by an associate on the West Coast, and then distribute it, wholesale, to a network of suppliers and dealers. Unfortunately, one of the people on that supply chain turned out to be an undercover cop."

Peter “Chappy” Meyerhoff sits down with ex-con filmmaker Seth Ferranti.A military brat, Seth was into drugs at the ripe young age of 13. At age 19 in high school, he had built an empire, supplying around 15 colleges across five states. In 1991, he became one of the first targets in the expanded war on drugs. He was initially arrested on the state level for “conspiracy to distribute LSD”. But upon discovering his extensive, nationwide network, he was reindicted at the federal level with a Continuing Criminal Enterprise (CCE) charge.Seth decided to fake his suicide in order to avoid jail time and moved to L.A. to lay low until all was forgotten. However, y then, he was one of the U.S. Marshals' 15 Most Wanted Fugitives and it was quickly discovered that his “suicide” was a hoax. He was incidentally arrested when a shop owner called the cops after finding Seth and a friend smoking a joint behind his property, and in three days, the police matched Seth's prints. At 23 years old, Seth was sentenced to 25 years.Determined to move past this period in his life as fast as he could, Seth found refuge in education. His love for writing and studying brought him a surprising amount of success while in prison: Seth earned three college degrees, including a Master's, wrote 22 books on gangsters, drug lords, and prison gangs, and, alongside his wife, founded a publishing house and website, Gorilla Convict, and started a career as a journalist writing for VICE, Penthouse, and others. After being released he started making films. Thompson-style outlaw whose hero's were Henry Rollins, Axl Rose, and Jim Morrison. Seth Ferranti spent twenty one years in federal prison after being convicted as an LSD kingpin. He had initially faked his suicide to evade law enforcement and was on the US Marshall's 15 Most Wanted list before his eventual arrest. Being a first time, non-violent drug offender, the severity of his sentence garnished national attention and was covered extensively by The Washington Post, Rolling Stone, and many other publications. Ferranti received a bachelor's and master's degree in journalism while he was incarcerated and once he was released, Seth continued his career in journalism and made a transition into film, writing and producing White Boy, a documentary about legendary Detroit-based drug dealer White Boy Rick. help us make more money: https://bit.ly/koncretepatreon sponsors https://liquiddeath.com - Use code KONCRETE at checkout to get a free koozie 2-pack with a 12-pack purchase. danny https://www.instagram.com/jonesdanny https://twitter.com/jonesdanny

Over the last 21 years, 43-year-old Seth Ferranti earned a master’s degree, got married, launched a writing career and founded a publishing house. And he did it all from behind bars. His crime and punishment are so out of line, it is difficult to believe that the USA would treat a college kid selling pot and LSD as if he were Pablo Escobar, but that's what they did. He got the highest possible sentence. Even Adam Diaz, head of the Dominican drug cartel featured in the book Betrayal in Blue, served far far less time in an American prison. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/burl-barer/support

Interview with Seth Ferranti, a former LSD Kingpin who was on the top 15 U.S. Marshal's most wanted list. He started out life as a quintessential all American boy growing up in the suburbs. This changed as he rose through the ranks of the drug game, moving LSD and cannabis to over a dozen colleges up and down the east coast. He was eventually caught by law enforcement but managed to evade capture for two years til he was sentenced to 25 years in federal prison. He quickly adapted to life inside the penitentiary and was able to build a successful writing career while serving time.
