When we use the word transgender, we are referring to an inclusive umbrella term, that consists of binary trans people (trans men and trans women), as well as non-binary people and people who cross dress. There are a lot of ways that transgender people can describe their identities. Understanding the words and labels people use encourages respect. Today's Episode offers a wide view about several topics - each of them deserving plenty of space in today's world. And you might feel like being in a roller coaster, imagining how Gumisayi Bonzo, my guest today, manages to engage herself in all of them. She's fighting for equal laws and acknowledgement for transgender persons in Zimbabwe. Helping to get proper healthcare and establish support groups for transgender and intersex persons, but also for HIV-postivie persons. She's also helping HIV-positive prisoners since from her own experience, she knows how tough that can be. With the organisation trans smart trust they're fighting for inclusion, using HIV as an enter point - since usually there is no legal acceptance for trans topics at all. Be ready to listen how a person that really went through so much could become so cheerful, strong, powerful and passionate.

A study by the Harvard Business Review states that Sexual Harassment programs have backfired. Since the 1970's most US organizations have sought to address sexual harassment (basically to protect their "you-know-what's" from being sued because of it). They implemented mandatory training programs, also known as forbidden behavior training along with formal grievance procedures which made all the organizations and executives feel that they were taking care of the problem. But yet all these decades later, Sexual Harassment is still with us, as the "Me Too" movement brought to light.Today, some 40% of women and 16% of men say they have been sexually harassed at work...a number that remarkably has not changed since the 1980's! But, given how widespread grievance procedures and forbidden behavior training have become, why are the numbers still so high? For insight on this issue, I brought the fabulous and always entertaining USA Today best-selling author and Employment attorney, Jeanette Escuerdo into the studio. You will be amazed to hear her stories and the surprising Sexual Discrimination issue that is happening to women RIGHT NOW all because of Covid!!Guest: Jeanette EscuderoUSA Today best-selling author and employment attorneywww.jeanetteescudero.com

Women in rural Australia experience workplace sexual harassment at alarming rates, with a study from this week's podcast guest Dr Skye Saunders revealing 73% of rural women had experienced sexual harassment at work. Skye is an Associate Professor in Law at the University of New England, an Employment-Discrimination Solicitor and is the Vice President of the YWCA Canberra. Skye pioneered the first research in Australia on sexual harassment in rural workplaces, contained in her book 'Whispers from the Bush- The Workplace Sexual Harassment of Australian Rural Women.' In 2017 the Victorian Women's Trust produced a short documentary film called 'Grace Under Fire', which is based on Skye's research on workplace sexual harassment in rural Australia. In her work, Skye strives to ignite the inherent empathy and perception in both men and women as a central part of her mission to disrupt sex discrimination in the workplace. Skye was a delegate to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women in New York with the YWCA Australia, and was also awarded the Chancellor's Distinguished Young Alumni Award at the University of Canberra. Listen in this week as I chat with Skye about her pioneering research into gender dynamics and sexual harassment in rural workplaces, and her framework for change.

We talk to a friend of ours, Hyun Woo Sung. From all my years that I’ve known Hyun, I know him to be very respectful and most of, a peacemaker. We had him over for dinner one night a couple of months ago and as we were conversing, I was surprised to hear some of his stories he encountered at work where his co-workers were quick to label his behaviors as discriminating when he had no intent to. It was saddening to hear that political agendas overrule rational discourse in work places, creating an environment of walking on egg shells. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/smalltalkwiththelys/support
