Dylan Martinez: Glass Sculpture Confronting the Limits of Perception

Talking Out Your Glass podcast

At the heart of Dylan Martinez's work lies the striking H2O/SiO2 series, inspired by the artistic tradition of Trompe L'œil—the technique that deceives the eye into perceiving three-dimensional objects on a flat surface. Each sculpture is meticulously hot-sculpted and hand-molded by Martinez, capturing the fluid movement of rising bubbles and the delicate form of what appears, at first glance, to be bags of water. These pieces transcend objecthood; they are immersive experiences that invite stillness, inspection, and recalibration of the senses. Martinez reflects, “Our vision has the greatest effect on our understanding of the world. Through my artwork, I create scenarios where viewers must question their ability to navigate between reality and illusion.” Blending classical craftsmanship with contemporary conceptual inquiry, Martinez uses glass as both material and metaphor. His work explores how perception constructs truth—how desire and expectation often override what is actually seen. In his latest series, Martinez introduces vibrant color for the first time in years, signaling a shift influenced by pop art. Sculpted forms inspired by Pac-Man ghosts and hyperrealistic water balloons appear light, buoyant, and playful, yet reveal an intense precision beneath their surface charm. Also central to this new body of work is a group of hard-edged, geometric sculptures rooted in optical art. These pieces employ sharp lines, layered transparency, and refraction to produce illusions of shifting depth, bending geometry, and visual vibration. As viewers move around them, the forms seem to flicker, realign, or dissolve—forcing perception into motion. These optical works expand Martinez's inquiry into the unstable boundary between what is there and what is seen. Born in Stillwater, Minnesota, Martinez earned his degree in science from the University of Wisconsin–River Falls in 2008. It was during his junior year, upon visiting the university's glassblowing studio, that he discovered a profound connection to glass—drawn to how the material responded to physical forces he had studied in physics, chemistry, and geology. He recalls, “I tried it out, and it really resonated with me—in the way you move the material and how it reacts to heat and physical forces.” He later earned his MFA from Ball State University in 2017. Martinez honed his craft through an apprenticeship with Sam Stang at Augusta Glass Studio (2010–2012), evolving from functional glassware and vases into sculptural and installation-based work. He currently lives and works in his studio in Bingen, Washington. Martinez's work has earned global acclaim, appearing in public and private collections worldwide. International publications such as Elle Decoration (UK, NL, Germany), American Craft Magazine, Interior Design Magazine, and Aesthetica have celebrated his contributions to contemporary glass. His accolades include the Enrico Bersellini Award (Miano Vetro, Milan, 2018), the Stanislav Libensky Award (Prague, 2017), full scholarships to Pilchuck Glass School and Pittsburgh Glass Center (2017), and numerous Best in Show and Juror Awards. In 2021, he received Best in Show, OP ART/Glass, from the Imagine Museum in St. Petersburg, FL. In 2025, Martinez's work will be featured in More Than Meets the Eye at Belger Arts, Kansas City, MO (June 6 – September 6), as well as in a solo exhibition titled, Glass Reimagined, at Square One Gallery, St. Louis, MO (June 6 – August 1). Through a fusion of light, form, and material truth, Martinez's sculptures prompt a quiet confrontation with the limits of perception. As he states of his waterbag series, “The trapped movement of rising bubbles and the gesture of the forms convince the eye that the sculptures are exactly as they appear. What fascinates me is how our desires often override our true perception, leading us to believe what we see as the absolute truth.”

Martin Nathan and Tabitha Potts interview Tracey Rose Peyton about her beautiful and heart-breaking debut novel, Night Wherever We Go, published by The Borough Press. Night Wherever We Go is an intimate look at the domestic lives of enslaved women in 1800s America, and an evocative meditation on resistance and autonomy, on love and transcendence and the bonds of female friendship in the darkest of circumstances. It tells the tale of six women who are forced to become impregnated by their owners but decide to take matters into their own hands to prevent this from happening. Review by Sarah Waters - ‘a haunting evocation of the routine brutalities of slavery that is also a powerful celebration of friendship, community, resilience and rebellion. A hugely impressive debut.'  Tracey Rose Peyton also reads from her novel for us. This episode was produced by Martin Nathan. Martin Nathan has worked as a labourer, showman, pancake chef, fire technician, and railway engineer. Who are you when no one is looking? This question came to mind when reading Allie Rowbottom's incisive debut novel, Aesthetica. The story follows Anna, a former Instagram celebrity, on her path of reflection and redemption as she seeks to undergo a high-risk elective surgery called Aesthetica™, which is said to "reverse all her past plastic surgery procedures, returning her, she hopes, to a truer self."  As readers bounce between Anna's past and present, Allie paints a nuanced portrait of a woman stepping into herself while considering her relationship with fame, family, and the trappings of a landscape predicated on image and youth. In this interview, Allie shared more about why Aesthetica is a continued conversation from her memoir JELL-O Girls, her thoughts on privacy and pace, and embracing womanhood. An excerpt from the debut novel by Allie Rowbottom. Propulsive, dark, and moving, Aesthetica is a Veronica for the age of “Instagram face,” delivering a fresh, nuanced examination of feminism, #MeToo, and mother-daughter relationships, all while confronting our collective addiction to followers, filters, and faux realities. “This brutal tale of a teenage Instagram model teases out the ugliness of influencer culture against our rather ancient tradition of performative femininity. Under Allie Rowbottom's patiently literary hand, this novel's true gem lies in its central mother-daughter relationship—a reminder that our obsession with youth is never too far removed from what binds us to our lineage.” —Vanity Fair https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/709304/aesthetica-by-allie-rowbottom/ https://allierowbottom.com/

This podcast is sustained by sales of our debut book, Meow: A Novel (For Cats).  Episode 9: Allie Rowbottom's Aesthetica, Erasure of the Flesh, and the Polymorphic Self Allie Rowbottom's Aesthetica (available for preorder here) is a near-future peek into the inevitable. At 35, rudderless and lost, the protagonist, a former Instagram influencer, undergoes a dicey elective procedure to erase the years of fillers, lifts, laser and peels that extruded her form into one precision-engineered to resonate with a now-obsolete algorithm. We look back on the circumstances that led to her physical transformation and wonder whether yet another procedure could possibly allay her existential woes. In this episode of MEOW, we extend this scenario further into the future, positing ever-more-radical forms of physical transformation as the natural pursuit of the aging narcissist: human bodies, we suggest, will be reshaped into those of animals, insects, sculptural objects, architectural flourishes, and a variety of unfathomable machine-generated forms. Representing a compromise between Rowbottom's vision and our own, this week's narrator is a man who has had his vocal canal reconfigured in such a way as to only be able to produce the word “meow.” Human-language translation of this week's podcast is available upon request.  MEOW is the first and only literary podcast for your cat, conceived and presented in its native language. Today on What's My Frame? I'm joined by director and writer Laura Scrivano. I had the joy of meeting and working with Laura earlier this year on the set of WEDDING SEASON. Laura began her career in theatre; that ease of communicating with actors along with her composure and attention to detail while filming in an electric and at moments wild active casino was nothing short of impressive! Today we'll dive into what intrigued Laura about the HULU & Disney+ genre busting series as well as some behind the scenes stories. Laura is an Italian-Australian filmmaker now based in London. She shares details of her journey to become a working director. She speaks honestly about the challenges and limitations female creatives often face and what can be done to create an equal playing field going forward. Outside her work on WEDDING SEASON, Laura also directed two episodes of sci-fi drama THE LAZARUS PROJECT, and is also working on her debut feature as writer/director. She began her career in theatre, directing productions at Belvoir St, Australian Theatre for Young People and Opera Australia; and creating digital content for Sydney Theatre Company under the artistic directorship of Cate Blanchett and Andrew Upton. Laura's work has been described as ‘beautifully honest' (The Guardian), ‘mind blowing' (The Times), ‘groundbreaking' (Sydney Morning Herald), and ‘inspirational' (PromoNews). She was named as "Ones to Watch" for the Edinburgh TV Festival 2020-2021. A graduate of the Australian Film, Television & Radio School (AFTRS) in both directing and screenwriting, her shorts have screened at festivals internationally, including BFI Flare, Sundance, Oberhausen, Aesthetica, Cyprus Film Days, Cinema des Antipodes at Festival de Cannes and New York Fashion Week. Choreographer Okwui Okpokwasili and curator Sophie J Williamson, consider how time, history and circadian rhythms imprint themselves on our bodies. In Being Taken for Granite, Ursula K. Le Guin described a kinship with mud as a body that yields, reacts, imprints and responds. Taking this text as a guide they will unravel relationships between the body and the soil from which it is born, considering ways of archeologically excavating and reading bodies – human, non-human and geological – to understand their ever-present dialogue with the past. From the sedimentary strata of mountains to the narratives secreted in our own gestures, Okpokwasili and Williamson discuss the body as an accumulation and amalgamation of historic interactions. They will consider how lineage, past lives and trauma secret themselves in bodies, and how these silences resurface to reveal our entangled pasts, form us in the contemporary and redirect futures. Okwui Okpokwasili is a Brooklyn-based choreographer, performer and writer. Her performance work has been commissioned by the Walker Art Center, Danspace Project, Performance Space New York, the Center for the Art of Performance at UCLA, the 10th Annual Berlin Biennale, and Jacob's Pillow, among other institutions. Her work includes two Bessie Award–winning productions: Pent-Up: A Revenge Dance and Bronx Gothic. She has held residencies at the Maggie Allesee National Choreographic Center, the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, the Rauschenberg Foundation Captiva Residency, and New York Live Arts, where she was a Randjelovic/Stryker Resident Commissioned Artist. She is currently a Hodder Fellow at Princeton University's Lewis Center for the Arts. Okpokwasili is a 2018 MacArthur Fellow. The Edge is part of a series of location-based pieces exploring the stories and power of landscape. They use GPS location to trigger various sections when you run the app in the link supplied and you are in the correct location.  This piece runs from Birling Gap to Beachy head and explores some of the stories associated with the area. It works either as a clifftop walk or a walk at beach level (although you need to walk on a falling tide). Despite its beauty Beachy Head has long had associations with loss and destruction. The cliffs were a favourite place of Aleister Crowley, the notorious Great Beast and Satanist, and the piece includes some of the battles between him and local clergy. It’s getting closer to that time of the year! Here’s a few last minute suggestions in case you’re wondering what might be a useful thought-provoking gift for the teen years and over. There’s a number of popular publications that have gift subscriptions, such as Philosophy Now and New Philosopher, but you should also check out Womankind , Aesthetica and Monocle as well. Ethical Consumer, Peppermint and Sublime magazine were recommended by a friend as examples of the next generation of ethical publications; I’d also add Scientific American, Cosmos, New Scientist, Wired, and if you’re in Australia, there’s Double Helix for the younger years. In Australia there’s The Monthly, Frankie and Yen magazine, the last two are also appealing to teen readers. If you have any more suggestions, let me know in the comments!
