“Home is the center of everything. It is the issue where everyone can come to the table.” - Sara Terry In this episode we explore the compass that developers, bankers and real estate executives use when making decisions on land use and rights when it comes to others' housing security. Mobile home parks are the lowest rung on the pole of the American Dream, but for many that's all that is feasible. But now that many mobile home parks' land is getting sold to large development companies, that dream is quickly falling apart and there's no way for those mobile home owners to stop it. How can one choose personal wealth and greed while actively destroying others' lives? Dawn and Sara discuss this in addition to comparing photojournalism to documentary filmmaking, and recounting the progress of Sara's career spanning the last several decades. A DECENT HOME is a feature length documentary film by Sara Terry that addresses urgent issues of class and economic inequity through the lives of mobile home park residents who can't afford housing anywhere else. The film asks, Who are we becoming as Americans? — as private equity firms and wealthy investors buy up parks, making sky-high returns on their investments while squeezing every last penny out of the mobile home owners who lack rights and protections under local and state laws, and must pay rent for the land they live on. Racial and political violence erupt when the country of her birth, the Dominican Republic, reverses its birthright citizenship law and she is left stateless, along with over 200,000 others.Uranium Drive-InBag ItTry going a day without plastic. In this touching and often flat-out-funny film, we follow "everyman" Jeb Berrier as he embarks on a global tour to unravel the complexities of our plastic world.New Day was initially formed because the women's movement had arrived and a group of independent filmmakers couldn't find distribution for their feminist films. New Day sustains the ideas that inspired its formation in 1971 - collaboration, hope and social change.“We met at the 1971 Flaherty Seminar, where some of our films were programmed,” recalled founding member Amalie Rothschild. “I was in production with It Happens to Us. I'd been trying to get distribution for Woo Who? May Wilson. I'd take it to non-theatrical distribution companies and they'd say 'It's wonderful, dear, we really like it. But there's no audience...' ”Founding members Julia Reichert and Jim Klein had already started self-distributing their film, Growing Up Female. "The whole idea of distribution," explained Julia Reichert, "was to help the women's movement grow. Films could do that, they could get the ideas out. We could watch the women's movement spread across the country just by who was ordering our films. First it was Cambridge and Berkeley. I remember the first showing in the deep South."Soon, a fourth member joined the three: "When I first met them," Liane Brandon explains, "I'd been inundated with requests to show Anything You Want To Be. I'd been running back and forth to the Post Office, making myself crazy. Other distributors wanted my film, but the most they would offer was a two-year contract, as they were sure the women's movement wouldn't last any longer than that. Because I'd been active in women's groups since 1969, I knew there was a huge demand, but most distributors didn't, so they offered bad deals, or they wanted to ghettoize the films. When I first talked with Jim and Julia and Amalie, I thought 'Ah-hah! Someone else who's experiencing the same things I am.'Much has changed in media distribution since 1971 when the early members were selling 16 mm film prints! But the commitment to quality content and cutting edge distribution remains.Shown at right: left to right back row: Amalie R. The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Frank Dawson and Abby Ginzberg of AGENTS OF CHANGE. AGENTS OF CHANGE premieres on Tuesday, February 20, 2018 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on WORLD CHANNEL (check local listings) as part of the new season of AMERICA REFRAMED, public media's award-winning documentary series. Streaming will begin on February 21, 2018 on all station-branded PBS platforms, including PBS.org, worldchannel.org and on PBS apps for iOS, Android, Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV and Chromecast.  The film examines the racial conditions on college campuses across the United States focusing on two seminal protests: the 1968 student-led strike at San Francisco (SF) State University, and the take-over of Willard Straight Hall on the Cornell University campus in 1969.  The two events prompted decades of social, cultural and political change on campuses which still come into play throughout the country. These protests paved the way for student equity and inclusion, and led to the creation of the first Black and Ethnic Studies departments. Today, nearly half a century later, many of the same demands are surfacing in campus protests across the country, revealing how much work remains to be done.
