The rich tidal marshes and mixed oak and pine forests of the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge stretch back into time. Into this lush, mysterious world of cricket song and nesting waterfowl in Dorchester County on the edge of the Eastern Shore, Araminta Ross was born in March 1822. Araminta would later be called “Moses” by the enslaved people she led to freedom along the Underground Railroad. Most of us know her as Harriet Tubman. The steadfast abolitionist grew up on a 10-acre property near the mouth of the Blackwater River. Over decades, Tubman's childhood home was lost in the swampy marsh, but then rediscovered in 2021. A new documentary, “Ben's Ten: Chattel Slavery on Maryland's Eastern Shore,” visits the site, and explores, the lives of enslaved people who lived, worked and died here. It's called “Ben's Ten: Chattel Slavery on Maryland's Eastern Shore.” The documentary was produced by Maryland Public Television in partnership with the state's Department of Public Transportation State Highway Administration. We speak to Dr. Julie Schablitsky, Chief of Cultural Resources at the Maryland Department of Transportation, who helped rediscovery the historical site. We are also joined by Ernestine “Tina” Martin Wyatt, a descendant of Harriet Tubman. (Photo by Lorie Shaull, via Flickr. BIO: Dr. David Kass received his Ph.D. in Business Economics from Harvard University and has published articles in corporate finance, industrial organization, and health economics. He currently teaches Advanced Financial Management.STORY: In his early 20s, David invested $2,000 in a company giving out high dividends. Only after he invested did he realize that none of the senior executives in the company owned its shares. Soon enough, the stock went down to zero due to accounting fraud.LEARNING: Only invest in a company if senior executives, especially the CEO, own a significant stake. The value of the CEO's stock in his own company to his annual salary should be at least 3:1. “Look carefully at proxy statements and make sure the CEO and other senior managers have skin in the game, that their interests are likely aligned with yours and have a large stake through their stock holdings.”Dr. David Kass Guest profileDr. David Kass received his Ph.D. in Business Economics from Harvard University and has published articles in corporate finance, industrial organization, and health economics. He currently teaches Advanced Financial Management. Before joining the Smith School faculty in 2004, he held senior positions with the Federal Government (Federal Trade Commission, General Accounting Office, Department of Defense, and the Bureau of Economic Analysis).Dr. Kass has recently appeared on Bloomberg TV, CNBC, PBS Nightly Business Report, Maryland Public Television, Business News Network TV (Canada), FOX TV, Bloomberg Radio, Wharton Business Radio, KCBS Radio, American Public Media's Marketplace Radio, and WYPR Radio (Baltimore), and has been quoted on numerous occasions by The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg News, The New York Times and The Washington Post, where he has primarily discussed Warren Buffett, Berkshire Hathaway, the economy, and the stock market. He has also launched a Smith School “Warren Buffett” blog. Dr. Kass has accompanied MBA students on trips to Omaha for private meetings with Warren Buffett and Finance Fellows to Berkshire Hathaway's annual meetings.Dr. Kass received a Smith School “Top 15% Teaching Award”, a “Distinguished Teaching Award (Top 10%),” and the prestigious “Krowe Teaching Award” on two occasions.Worst investment everDavid was fortunate to start as an investor in the stock market at age 12, courtesy of his grandfather, who gave him a gift of five shares of a $20 stock. Since then, David started following the market.Fast forward ten years or so, in his early 20s, when David was working and earning some money investing in the stock market. In 1969 the stock market was doing reasonably well, and a stock caught David's attention. Back then, every day, the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, or Financial News would list the ten most active stocks by number of shares traded. Near the top of the list was this computer software company called Scientific Resources. It had a common and preferred stock. David noticed that the preferred stock was paying a 9% dividend yield.David didn't understand the relationship between risk and return then. The average stock in the stock market then had an average dividend yield of 3%. Cash dividends were higher because more companies back then did not buy back their shares. They'd return capital to shareholders through a cash dividend. So a stock paying 9% was a huge deal. David bought 100 shares at $20 per share. The $2,000 was all the money he had to invest at the time. Then the share price started going down daily.Once a year, shareholders would be asked to vote under SEC...

He has a new album  out & we talk about the next movement with Love Groove Ent/Festival John Tyler is a 21-year-old artist, multi- instrumentalist, multi-genre producer, Founder of Love Groove Music Festival, and film scorer for Under Armour, Bloomberg Philanthropies, Visit Baltimore, and Maryland Public Television.  He has been featured in Charm TV, Hulu Advertisements, BET Instagram Promotions, Baltimore Magazine, Afro Newspaper, Baltimore Sun, B'more Art, Baltimore's 92Q, & WTMD.    At 16, John released his first mixtape and has since released two more. In 2019, John's debut album “The Good Side of Things'' dropped, setting a high standard for Baltimore music.  This project highlights his abilities to merge multiple genres into one. At 17, John started the Love Groove Music Festival to bring together young artists from different genres of art to showcase talent and to offer learning and networking opportunities.  This year marks his fifth showcase, partnering with Hot Sauce Artists Collective, Baltimore Center Stage,  to bring an ultimate music, arts, and education festival. After two long years since John Tyler's debut album, “The Good Side of Things”, he is finally back with his new EP and documentary entitled “ Free Spirit”. Free Spirit is a soulful, yet relaxing four-song collection highlighting his musicality and inspired by his desire to take a step back and appreciate life. John made this relaxing EP because he was overwhelmed with the fast forward nature of his life, the good and the bad.  He describes this EP as “from sunrise to sunset”.    It is his hope that this EP serves as a relaxing tool for those who are facing anxiety and constantly in motion.  Join John on his upcoming 2022 winter tour as he performs the full free spirit project! Today on Midday, It's Midday on Politics. We'll be previewing Governor Larry Hogan's final State of the State speech tonight, and talking with two political journalists about what bills are moving forward in these first few weeks of the General Assembly Session. One of those bills is called the Juvenile Interrogation Protection Act, and Tom's first guest is its sponsor, State Sen. Jill Carter, a Democrat who represents Baltimore City and District 41 in Annapolis. Sen. Carter joins us on Zoom from Baltimore City. Governor Larry Hogan will give his 8th and final State of the State speech at 7pm tonight (Wednesday, Feb. 2). Hogan is the first Maryland Republican Governor to serve two terms since the 1950s. He has remained very popular among Republicans, Democrats and Independents, but he is term limited and prohibited from running for a third term. Because of the pandemic, like last year, he will not deliver his remarks to a live audience. He has chosen the room in Annapolis known now as the Old Senate Chamber, where George Washington resigned his military commission in an emotional and historic speech two days before Christmas in 1783. Washington ended his tearful remarks by saying, “I take my leave of all the employments of public life.” That didn't quite work out. Six years later, Washington was elected the first President of the United States. Whether or not Gov. Hogan will tear-up tonight remains to be seen, but it is doubtful that he will announce he is leaving public life. His frequent appearances on national cable shows have fueled lots of speculation that he is preparing for a Presidential run in 2024. Mr. Hogan is being courted by Mitch McConnell and other GOP leaders to run for office sooner than that, They would reportedly like him to challenge Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen in 2022. Joining Tom now are two veteran political journalists. Bryan Sears covers government for The Daily Record… Bryan joins us on Zoom from Crofton, Maryland. And Jeff Salkin is the host of Direct Connection and State Circle on Maryland Public Television. State Circle is now in its 40th season… Jeff joins us on our digital line from Columbia, Maryland. In the fall of 1968, just a few months after Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was gunned down on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, an extraordinary thing happened in northwestern Montgomery County. A Black Methodist church in a community called Quince Orchard, and two nearby White Methodist churches decided to merge into one congregation. Cities across the country, including Baltimore, were dealing with unprecedented racial tension in the aftermath of the riots and uprisings that erupted after King's murder, just as these three churches began a nearly unprecedented odyssey together. A film that tells this amazing story will air on Maryland Public Television this coming Monday as part of MPT's Standing Against Racism: Fostering Unity Through Dialogue initiative.  It's called Finding Fellowship, and Tom's guest today is the film's director and co-producer, Jason Green. He is also an attorney and former associate counsel in the Obama White House who is co-founder and senior vice-president of Skillsmart, a local technology firm. Today a conversation about the interplay of music and medicine.Parkinson's disease is a chronic degenerative brain disorder that affects about 3% of people over the age of 60. That’s the average age of people who develop the disease, but Parkinson’s has been diagnosed in people as young as 18. The Parkinson’s Association reports that about 60,000 Americans are diagnosed with the disease every year. There may be as many as 7-10 million people living with Parkinson’s world-wide.There’s a story in the Baltimore Sun by Andrea McDaniels that describes how some patients use boxing to help stave-off the tremors and balance problems they experience. And, there is some encouraging research that indicates that music may also be a helpful tool in treating the devastating symptoms of this pernicious disease. Dr. Zoltan Mari is the director of the Cleveland Clinic’s Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health in Las Vegas and the head of the Nevada Movement Disorders Program. He joins us on the phone from his office in Las Vegas.Dr. Alexander Pantelyat joins us here in Studio A. He’s an assistant professor of neurology, and the co-founder and co-director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Music and Medicine, a research and treatment initiative with the Peabody Institute. Not coincidentally, as you can see in this brief clip produced by the Baltimore Sun, Dr. Pantelyat is also an accomplished violinist.Carolyn Black-Sotir is here as well. She’s a singer, actress and journalist. You may have seen her perform in concerts, or as a host on Maryland Public Television. She lost both her parents to Parkinson’s Disease, and she has a concert series called the Steinway Series at Silo Hill in Baltimore County that is devoted to raising awareness of, and funding for, research on Parkinson’s Disease. An outgrowth of Dr. Pantelyat's research at Johns Hopkins Center for Music and Medicine is ParkinSonics, a research study group-turned-community chorus that's open to anyone with PD or atypical Parkinsonism. No musical experience is necessary, and everyone is welcome. Sponsored by the Maryland Association for Parkinson Support, Inc (MAPS), and Johns Hopkins Pacing for Parkinsons Campaign. When Jeff Mose earned his insurance license and became a financial advisor in 2002, some might have seen it as a somewhat radical career change. In truth, however, Jeff’s extensive and accomplished background in the fields of communication, education and entrepreneurship served as the perfect foundation from which to launch a career in financial services.  Today, Jeff draws upon his impressive past to provide a uniquely high level of expertise and client service. With a focus on proactive communication and education, Jeff teaches clients how to take ownership of their personal finances and confidently build toward a secure financial future.  Having successfully managed and grown businesses in the midst of all the market turmoil and economic challenges of the past 30 years, Jeff has a unique insight into the financial tools and strategies that work best in varying market conditions. He knows first-hand the importance of “financial defense,” and teaches clients how to grow their money using conservative, “bird-in-the-hand” strategies designed to also protect their portfolios from potentially devastating losses. A Maryland native, Jeff got his start in business with a part-time job in a sporting goods store while still in high school. He served in the U.S. Navy and Reserves near the end of the Vietnam War, and afterward went into sales and marketing for an upstart company called Nike. While studying mass communication at Townson State University, Jeff worked behind the scenes and as on-air talent for Maryland Public Television. From there, he moved to the executive offices as a fundraising developer. Returning to Maryland, Jeff worked as Development Director for Baltimore-based WJHU-FM, and his success there led him to similar positions with the Maryland Chapter of the American Lung Association and the historic ship, Pride of Baltimore II.  Then, recognizing that the Internet was poised for explosive growth, Jeff used his skills to become the marketing and communications manager for start-up Aether Systems, one of the first software developers for web-based handheld devices to track financial data. In 1995, Jeff helped prepare the company for its Initial Public Offering (IPO) and contributed to its eventual growth into a $12.8 billion company. After leaving Aether, Jeff co-founded the data-security company KoolSpan, Inc., and helped oversee its growth until leaving to pursue his career in financial services.  In 2009, Jeff opened his own company, adopting a unique business model geared primarily toward retirees and near-retirees and focusing on conservative financial strategies designed to provide reasonable growth, dependable lifelong income and protection from damaging losses.  Jeff has been quoted in USA Today and the Wall Street Journal, as well as featured on the cover of Senior Market Advisor.   Questions Answered:    1) It appears that there’s more than one type of annuity. If I’m correct, what are the different types of annuities?   2) With all these good reasons to love annuities, why don’t more people buy them? Studies show that just .25% of the IRA market are in annuities.   3) Pensions are the monthly paycheck for most of America’s current retirees. But that’s changing as the secure income offered by pensions is no longer being offered to the majority of today’s workers. They now have a 401k or similar retirement plans. Can these plans be counted on for a guaranteed paycheck or is that something an annuity can provide?   Grow the value of your business by 71%!
