When 36-year-old Mike Abrashoff took command of the USS Benfold in 1997, he faced a demoralized crew that openly jeered their departing captain. Instead of sticking with the Navy's traditional command-and-control leadership style, Abrashoff decided to revolutionize how he led. His radical approach? Trust his crew, listen to their ideas, and make their lives better. The results were unprecedented - taking a ship with low morale and poor performance and transforming it into what many considered the best damn ship in the Navy. In this episode, Mike and Kristen break down Abrashoff's leadership philosophy and how his innovative approaches from 25 years ago remain remarkably relevant today.Highlights:What drives people to leave organizations: lack of dignity, inability to make an impact, not being listened to, and lack of responsibilityThe "Washington Post test" for decision-making: would you be comfortable seeing your actions on the front page?Three key questions for leaders when things go wrong: Were goals clear? Were there enough resources? Was training sufficient?Breaking down hierarchy by modeling the behavior you want to see from othersCreating a climate of trust through collaboration over competitionBuilding people up through praise, opportunity, and improved quality of lifeTaking calculated risks that empower your team to show initiativeHow focusing on people development led to exceptional combat readinessLinks & Resources Mentioned:It's Your Ship by Captain D. In this True Stories at Work episode, you get to meet Tara, who started her career as a behavioral specialist and found the skills and knowledge transferred nicely into HR. She worked in many industries (financial, tech, and higher ed) and understands that “the work that we do in HR is ultimately about people. The industries are definitely different. The types of people that work in them are different. But, overall there's a similar thread to humanity.” We connect around the virtue of patience, except in disciplinary situations “We would go through a corrective action process and it would be first, final written warning, second final written warning, and third final written warning. And I would have managers say, what does the word "final" mean if you're going this far?” Tara's early career aspirations were to be an archeologist. However, uncovering a revealing photo of an employee was not a treasure she was seeking when he was terminated after his 3rd “final” warning. “It confirmed was they knew this was coming… but it will indelibly be in my mind.” We discuss entitlement, and how it shows up in unusual ways across senior leadership “You know, sometimes people aren't grateful and sometimes people don't act so well… use their, their trash cans as toilets”. Tara understands that demonstrating kindness is the most important aspect of her legacy, even in challenging employment situations. After a company closure, she reflects on feedback she received from an impacted employee “If that is the legacy of my career, if that I handled something where somebody came away from a very negative experience and felt that there was kindness in that experience, then you know, then I've accomplished everything I need to accomplish.” We wrap up curious about why “HR people on TV tend to be represented as dull when we actually are amazing, have a lot of fun doing what we're doing while ensuring that there's heart in our work?” There are no answers to why our smart, talented peers are projected in media as Catbert (Dilbert's evil director of human resources) and Cody (the buzzkill in The Office). In the end, you'll hear the final workplace confession from my BFF. This one is a childish prank, gone, terribly wrong. A puddle splashing that got her banned from the work site. My growth and my development is at its highest point when I'm being pushed beyond where I think I could go. – Tristan Cammaert Hi everyone! Welcome to today's show. Today we talk about the value of continuous learning and staying curious in your life and career with Tristan Cammaert. Tristan is a seasoned leader who has held various executive-level roles at RBC, currently at Earnst and Young. We also discuss: The importance of team diversity, building trust and being aligned to one strategic vision Getting out of our comfort zone Supporting the next generation of leaders Finding your why Servant leadership Having a vision, and a lot more. Click that play button to listen! Don't forget to subscribe and rate us on Apple Podcasts! Getting out of your comfort zone I do have the voice in my head that's telling me “Stay where you are” on occasion, but I also will pause and take a step back and say, “Where do I know that I'd truly been at my best? Where have I been the happiest and most fulfilled in terms of my work?” It has always been when I am pushed and when I'm outside of my comfort zone. Find Your WHY Most companies and individuals are able to talk about the ‘what' and sometimes they get to the ‘how', but they're very rarely actually able to articulate the ‘why' – why are we doing what we're doing. Servant Leadership As a leader, you're not supposed to be bossing people around. You're supposed to be in service of the team that you have. Your job is to actually really help bring your team together, but you are in service to them, as opposed to being directive. Tristan's Advice to New Leaders Make sure you hire and grow and manage from a diversity perspective – diversity of thought, not just in terms of gender, race or age. 100% - don't stop learning. Make sure that you remain curious. There's a whole bunch of ways you can do that – consuming videos, podcasts, books, etc. Don't try and boil the ocean – stick with one or two things that worked for you. Tithing and The Church

Giving money to the church is often not a popular topic but this week we discuss tithing. God calls us to be joyful and sacrificial givers of our time, money and "first fruits", giving us opportunity to trust God in our dependance on Him. Yet sometimes we are guilty of critiquing God's bride and justifying why we don't need to give to His church that He loves so much, He came to die for her? We also get into what it means to follow Jesus's example as a Servant-Leader, as the head of our house and lead our family well in reading God's word, prayer and tithing... all things that God uses to transform our hearts, minds and lives. NOTES: This Weeks Whiskey: Eagle Rare by Buffalo Trace Disterery Christian B. shares a trick to be able to better smell the notes in the whiskey What does it mean to Tithe and are we still called to do it? What does it mean to give God our "first fruits"?  Tithing is just as much about our heart and motivation when giving, as it is about how much we give, just like we see with Cain and Able in Genesis, where Able's offering was the best of his best to God... not what was left over. Tithing is an exercise of obedience and reminder that we are to be fully-dependent on God, that all things come from Him, and that we are simply stewarding God's resources and money that he provides, in order to do His will on earth. The principles for tithing obediently is that our giving should be joyful and sacrificial, and through giving of our first fruits back to God, we are acknowledging our dependence on Him and remembering where all good things come from. Does our American outlook of individual consumerism and "exchange of goods" economics influence our attitude towards tithing to our local church if we feel like we (as attendees or members) aren't getting what we think we should be getting from our Church? Specifically if that church as attracted attendees by being "seeker sensitive" and catering to the felt-needs of their congregation. Some Christian's say they don't attend church or don't give money to a church for a variety of reasons: If we were hurt by a church in the past or jaded against the church or "organized religion", does that get us off the hook for not needing to tithe? God doesn't give us the option to "love Jesus but hate the church" or not participate in a weekly gathering of God's people. Jesus came to earth in human form to die for His bride, The Church. We can't both love Jesus and hate His Bride that He came to die for. Biblical tithing IS NOT a means of "give to get", like what is proclaimed in the heretical "prosperity gospel" or "name it and claim it" movement, which is common with tele-evangelists who claim that if you give them money, you will be healed... become rich... become holy, etc, etc. You know you are a "Consumer-Christian" when we are quick to criticize the church, not give of your money or time regularly and often complain about not liking the church music or preaching... because we see participation in church as a consumer, where we are served, catered to and entertained... rather than the Biblical definition of church were we ARE the church and called to give our money, volunteer our time and get off the side-lines and into the game instead of being an "arm-chair" quarterback.  If you say you love Jesus but you hate the church... you don't love Jesus and don't get the Gospel and whole purpose of why Jesus came to earth to die for our sins, to bring us back into relationship with God the Father. Tithing is one of the means in which we can practically and tangibly meet each others earthly needs. Tithing should be considered the baseline/starting point. We are still responsible to hearing God's call and the Holy Spirit's prompting when we encounter people with tangible needs in our lives. How does this apply to being a husband or father? As the man, God has proclaimed us as the head of our household, which doesn't simply mean you are in charge and everyone needs to listen to you but more accurate and in-line with Jesus's example as a Servant-Leader, being "the head" has more to do with the responsibility of taking care of and leading your family... which includes spiritual and financial leadership, like tithing. We as husbands and dads will be held accountable for how we loved and lead our families and churches. Simon Sinek - "Leaders Eat Last" book
