Current estimates put the global tiger population at around 4,500 individuals, having plummeted from the 100,000 tigers estimated at the start of the 20th century, and they are currently found in less than 6% of its historical range. The situation doesn't seem to be getting any better, as detailed in the recently released report titled, Skin and Bones: Tiger Trafficking Analysis from January 2000 – June 2022, which points to no let-up in tiger trafficking in the last couple of decades. This new study by TRAFFIC revealed that authorities worldwide have seized tigers and parts equal to an average of 150 tigers a year over almost 23 years, with seizures in the first half of this year signalling the relentless pursuit of remaining wild tigers. We speak to Kanitha Krishnasamy, a co-author of the report and the Director for TRAFFIC in Southeast Asia, who sheds more light on the findings of this study, and expands on the issues contributing to this illegal trade of tigers and tiger parts.Image Credit: TRAFFIC

Ben Clark is a singer, songwriter, composer and an Indiana native. Ben has been writing music since age 14, and The Circus In Winter was his first full-length musical work. For the piece he received praise from both educational and professional worlds including the Kennedy Center Award for Outstanding Musical Composition, and a full production at Goodspeed's Norma Terrace Theatre in East Haddam, CT. Ben has a band in NYC called Ben Clark and the Long Shadows, as well as two other musicals in development: Skin And Bones, a collaboration with University of Nebraska playwright Andrew Kramer, and Bruno and the Gospel of Infinity. @blcofficial

On this episode of BSing with Badasses, we chat with Taylor from Skin and Bones! We discuss how busking on the Venice Boardwalk built up both the band and their fanbase, how the first jam with a potential new band member can be like a first date (or one night stand), and we talked about their EP Ghost in This Town! Tune in!

Tuesday’s show was bound to sell out because Berklee forces arrived with a couple hundred students, faculty and alumni and because their very distinguished alums Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings asked if their performance and award presentation could be nested in a special Roots show. That means a lot to us, and both parties pulled out the stops to create one of the finest and most meaningful shows we’ve ever put on. Liz Longley has a song with a chorus that starts “You’ve got that way…” and wow, so does she. Armed with an acoustic guitar and her cool, smoky and nimble voice, she took the stage for our first set. The songs have become hits for me from repeated listening to her debut album. “Memphis” and “Bad Habit” are new soul folk standards. “Skin And Bones” has a darker Appalachian edge. Then it was on to a very different voice in Sierra Hull, with her musically entwined new string trio and songs from her fascinating new Weighted Mind album. After the title track we heard the baroque and intricate composed interplay of “Queen of Hearts/Royal Tea” (thank you Berklee training) and the silk pillow of a song that is “Lullaby.” We were only one song into Maureen Murphy’s set when Photographer Tony whispered to me that we were experiencing the finest singer in the show’s history. There’s a case to be made. I’ve rarely seen so much refinement and technique mingled with so much power and passion. Murphy delivered four very different songs with a rocking, versatile quartet, but the capstone was her ode to her singing idol Lisa Fisher “How Can I Ease The Pain.” The song’s free form gave Maureen ample ways to shape and craft and massage and emote. It was simply breathtaking in its range of textures, from delicate to forceful. And she got to hit a classic money note in Martin Sexton’s “Smoke.” It would have been difficult to pack more musical range or magic into 20 minutes. I’ve been watching Gillian and Dave perform for twenty years, and it’s always riveting. Certainly, seeing the MCR logo behind them was extra inspiring and gratifying. They opened with spectral unison singing on “The Way It Will Be,” making the harmonies of “The Way It Goes” and “Miss Ohio” all the more bloom-like. When Berklee President Roger Brown presented the school’s American Master Awards to them (as individuals by the way not a group), he cited Dave’s harmonically rich and inventive guitar playing. And yes, that’s one thing I’ve always loved about it – close, dissonant intervals delivered with bebop command and a staccato attack, like Bill Monroe downstrokes on Eddie Lang’s guitar. And on this night I got to be about 20 feet from his shredding solo on “Red Clay Halo,” one of my favorite Gill and Dave songs. Their final number “Everything Is Free” includes the line “we’re gonna do it anyway, even if it doesn’t pay,” and that’s how GW and DR always sounded to me. Their old friend T Bone Burnett, who collected the night’s other Master Award, played amiable electric guitar strokes and sang a bit on that final tune before adding a whole new verse about a certain orange presidential candidate in the rollicking Nashville Jam on “I’ll Fly Away.”

SHOW #290 - Live, Uncut & Uncensored Conversations With "Musicians You Should Know" We begin the evening with Anthony Geraci.  Founding member of Sugar Ray & The Bluetones has also been a keyboard force for folks like Muddy Waters, Otis Rush, Big Mama Thornton and Jimmy Rogers to name just a few.  With the backing of some good friends, known here as The Boston Blues All-Stars, Anthony delivers Fifty Shades Of Blue, a 13 song tour de force.  I will speak with Anthony about his career and the new album. Couch Kid New Music with Tommy McCoy, who has been performing around the globe and with a legendary listing of performers since the 80s.  He has just released 25 Year Retrospective, a collection of songs representing every album along with 3 brand new tracks. Featuring performances alongside folks like Lucky Peterson, Garth Hudson, Levon Helm; the album is a true picture of Tommy’s musical life. He and I will chat about the new album and more. Lazer Lloyd is finally making his way onto The Couch.  We will discuss his incredible success, which began in Israel and has spread to the rest of the world.  We’ll find out about his writing and the new self-titled album. We’ll also talk about the new video for his song “Never Give Up”, in response to the murder of a young couple in Israel, in hopes of raising money for their orphaned children. As Lloyd makes his way back to the US for a series of tours, we’ll learn more about this special musician. Couch Kid New Music with Dudley Taft and his about to be released album Skin And Bones.  I am thrilled to share some songs from the album with you before its October 16th release.  We’ll also find out what has been keeping Dudley busy since he last appeared on The Couch in May 2014.

This week is my skin and bones episode of my podcast.  Now, not that it is not full of rambling goodness, far from it.  My audio book review is of Break No Bones by Kathy Reichs, the latest Temperence Brennan mystery.  My guest interview is with Jesse Kalosza who runs the Lucky Devil Tattoo Art Studio in Lindsay, Ontario.  We discuss the art of drawing on skin and how popular it has become and some of his more interesting client requests.  The music for this podcast is by Universal Hall Pass and is called Dragonfly and a link can be found on the website for thier page on Garageband.com and was chosen for what some people get inked on thier bodies.  As always your comments and suggestions are appreciated.
