Sermon: InseparableTeacher: Jack GuerraConfidence in God's PLAN‭‭Romans‬ ‭8‬:‭28‬-‭30‬‬And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.‭‭Philippians‬ ‭1‬:‭6‬‬being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.Confidence in God's PLANConfidence in God's LOVE‭‭Romans‬ ‭8‬:‭31‬-‭34‬‬What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.“The judge of all has pronounced acquittal and justification; who can call his sentence in question?  The prosecutor may not venture to appear but counsel for the defense is present and active: the Christ who died and rose again and is enthroned at God's right hand , making prevalent intercession for his people.  Nothing can come between them and his love- not all the trials and afflictions which they have experienced or may experience. In the spiritual conflict mighty forces, supernatural as well as natural, are arrayed against them, but through him they overcome them all and remain irrevocably encircled and empowered by his unchanging love.   -FF BruceConfidence in God's PLANConfidence in God's LOVEConfidence in God's SON‭‭Romans‬ ‭8‬:‭35‬-‭39‬‬Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written: “For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.” No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.Spring Lake Church WebsiteFind out more about Spring Lake Church at our website.https://www.springlakechurch.org/Financially Support Spring Lake ChurchGiving financially is simple. He hears (John 16:13). 2. He can be lied to (Acts 5:3). 3. He makes decisions about right and wrong like the Father and Son (Acts 15:28). 4. He intercedes for believers (Romans 8:26). 5.. He knows which is a function of being not a force (1 Corinthians 2:11). 8. He gives gifts (1 Corinthians 12:8,11 9. He wills (1 Corinthians 12:11). 10. He grieves (Ephesians 4:30, Isaiah 63:10) The Holy Spirit is not just a force, characteristic,or attitude rather He has personhood (in collaboration with the Father and Son) being infinitely superior to finite human beings who were created by Him with the Father and Son.  11. Believers are called to be led by Him (Romans 8:18, Galatians 5:18). 12. Believers are commanded not quench nor grieve Him (1 Thessalonians 5:19, Ephesians 4:30). 13. Do. you expect an inheritance from God?   "For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. Romans 8:14 ESV   Back in the time the Bible was written, sons inherited things. Paul uses the term "sons" here to denote that we will be expecting an inheritance. We are heirs of God. We're his children. He's going to give us his glory and his riches. Once we trust God, and get in the position as a Follower of One, we are children. It's done.   Are we led by the Spirit? We decide that once and he comes to live with us. He leads us and we "are" children.   So how does that show up in the world today? Our eternal wealth is more than we can imagine. We have an unlimited supply now. We get the opportunity to live on-mission with Jesus. His purpose was to save mankind. Our purpose is to be led by the Spirit and take part in this grand strategy.   We can be a blessing. We can do things to make the world and life better for everyone we meet. Maybe it's a prayer. Maybe it's a gift. Maybe it means we will do more so they can do less. Maybe we need to fix something. Imagine getting up every day and asking the Spirit what he would like you to do today. That's our first daily habit. We want to get in the habit of living on-mission with Jesus and being available to do what he calls us to do with and for others.   What's stopping you? Do you think about all the things you can't do? Ask God to show you what you can do. He made us an heir. You're part of God's strategy. Let's get in the game.   It may be that you would like to see how this is done? Check out our Marketplace Mission Trips. These are either 2-week online or 6-week offline exercises where we practice living like a child of God. Check them out at www.marketplacemissiontrip.com.

I pray for you constantly, asking God, the glorious Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, to give you spiritual wisdom and insight so that you might grow in your knowledge of God. I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can understand the confident hope he has given to those he called—his holy people who are his rich and glorious inheritance. I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God's power for us who believe him. This is the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honor at God's right hand in the heavenly realms. Now he is far above any ruler or authority or power or leader or anything else—not only in this world but also in the world to come. God has put all things under the authority of Christ and has made him head over all things for the benefit of the church. And the church is his body; it is made full and complete by Christ, who fills all things everywhere with himself.'  Ephesians 3:14-21 NLT 'When I think of all this, I fall to my knees and pray to the Father, the Creator of everything in heaven and on earth. Your roots will grow down into God's love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God's people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God. The selection of a book of Scripture and start of a new sermon series is a big deal. Not that studying any part of the Bible would be bad (all His works are great and studied by His people for their delight, Psalm 111:2), but certainly some sections at some times are more relevant. Because of my approach, preferring to preach about paragraph at a time, a book with some size could be a year of two of Sundays. Over the summer at least three people recommended Romans to me, about a month apart from each other and completely unaware of each other. They also had different reasons. There was no other consensus to consider, and all the elders affirmed the choice of Romans. Here we are. I have taught through Romans about one and a half times already, and it was twenty years ago. I got into chapter eight with the seventh and eighth graders at Grace Community Church before moving to Marysville in 2001, and started over in chapter one that fall until finishing all sixteen chapters. Some of you here today not only heard those sermons, I think you'd say that some of those sermons were vital to your understanding and appreciation of the gospel. Maybe you remember titles such as “The Performance Treadmill” and “God's Display of God.” What shouldn't be a surprise, but is still quite surprising, is that I am almost a completely different preacher than then, and while I still believe probably everything I said/taught, I can't imagine saying/teaching it that way now. I believe the same gospel, and I've also come to see the gospel's dominion in ways I didn't have categories to imagine back then. “Jesus is Lord” (Romans 10:9) is a confession like a deep and full well; the water on the surface is the same as the water further down, but by grace the taste keeps getting *gooder*. In addition to commentaries, I've now read some of Livy and Suetonius and Tacitus; the historical context for Romans is more clear, and more ugly than I thought. I knew about paganism and idolatry and nationalism from the Old Testament, but now I've also read more about the myths and the “futile ways inherited from … forefathers” (1 Peter 1:18), so the religious context into which Jesus came and Paul preached is even more desperate and bleak than I had considered. I was living 2000 or so years into church history, but now I've learned more about how that history doesn't make sense apart from the “flood-tide of Christ” (a phrase used in the third century). It has affected even the angle from which I see the purpose of Paul in writing it, and how that makes it relevant for every context, but maybe especially as an encouragement for us, right now, staring wide-eyed and jaw-dropped at a society abandoned to God's wrath like Romans 1, full of moral goodie-two-shoes (which we've nicknamed social justice warriors) like chapter 2, and headed toward the collapse of an empire with exactly the truth we need to repent from sin, resist sin, and rejoice in the God of our salvation. It was a verse in Romans that converted Augustine (albeit in sort of a “random” reading). It was a phrase in Romans that liberated Martin Luther and ignited the 16h century Reformation. The truths in this letter are the core of Christianity's dominance in Western Civilization. The gospel has done more to topple idols and tyrants, to undo sinners and Caesars, than any other single influence. The gospel of Christ is the power of God to subdue rebels and remake men. And it is all **gift**. The two greatest works of God are creation and redemption. Both are undeserved, unearned, and un-asked for. Both are *givens*. Both are gifts. Both gifts establish new ways of life. Paul's epistle to the Romans is perhaps *the* single greatest and sustained (let alone inspired) writing on salvation. As early as Romans 1:16, Paul presents the letter's theme: *the gospel*. And as he had previously written to the Corinthians, and expands to the Romans, the gospel is the giving of Christ by the Father, the giving of Christ's body to death, resurrected on the third day, and received by faith (1 Corinthians 15:1-5). That faith is a gift (Ephesians 2:8), and by faith we are justified as a gift unto righteous standing and new life and eternal life. > all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, (Romans 3:23–24) More gift than the sun is the Son, and more than breath is His blood, and more than fruit is the indwelling Spirit, and all the good is gift. The central event in human history is gift. The nature of God is that of generous giver. Paul argues in Romans 8 that if the Father has given His Son, how will He not with the Son graciously give us all things (Romans 8:32)? These gifts are what disrupted the Roman Empire (and Roman Catholicism 16 centuries later). What do you know about Rome around AD 57? As a city she could trace her history back to the 8th century BC. But by the time Paul wrote to the Romans the Roman Empire was *the* game in town, and Rome was the capital city. Nero had come to power in AD 54, and then scapegoated blame onto the Christians in AD 64 for burning the city. Before him, Rome had centralized power in Julius Caesar and Augustus and Tiberius and Caligula and Claudius, and they had conquered a wide territory. The luxury in Rome was only outdone by the slavery in Rome. Paul himself was a Roman citizen (Acts 21:39), and after writing this letter (from Corinth) he would get his chance to visit, having appealed to Caesar as a prisoner. He had never been there (Romans 1:10), and we don't know how the church started there (though we do know that there were Romans in Jerusalem at Pentecost, Acts 2:10). He would later be under house arrest in Rome, and be martyred in the city between AD 64-67. But this world superpower was built on idolatry and superstition, and every sort of glory they knew was worldly, fleshly, hellish. Rome was undone by her sin. Chapter 1 describes God's abandoning wrath, as men refuse to acknowledge God, and He gives them over to their lusts. The lust of the flesh eats itself. But it is also true that, considered from a different angle, Rome was undone by God's gifts. The fall of the Roman Empire, and the subsequent two-thousand years of church history, are a record of how the gospel of Jesus Christ has been leavening the lump of the world. I am not a post-millennialist, for a number of reasons, but this does not deny the greater work of God's gift in Jesus Christ, in the gospel, even in the book of Romans, to change the world. We do not live in the same world as those Christians to whom Paul wrote because of what he wrote, and those who have read it and been changed by God's power. They have been changed by gift. The empire of sin did not begin with the Caesars (obviously), but began when Adam sinned. The reign of sin and death has been disrupted not by better rules but by gift. > But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man's trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. And the free gift is not like the result of that one man's sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification. For if, because of one man's trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ. (Romans 5:15–17) > Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Romans 5:20–21) Can't we say that *gift reigns*? At least we can say that God reigns, who gifted His Son. We can say that Jesus reigns, who gave Himself and then gifts His people with the gift of justification, the gift of sanctification, the gift of His Spirit. This new dominion is a dominion of gift. Jesus Christ is *Dominus*, Lord, and the new management *gives*. Here are five descriptions of the gift/gifts as we'll see throughout Romans. ## A Divine Gift I read this observation, but it's good. There is no noun used more in Romans than “God,” and the word God is used with greater frequency than any other book in the New Testament, about 1 out of every 46 words (Morris). This is what our current rulers, and many of our neighbors, do not get. Paul was “set apart for the gospel of God” (Romans 1:1), he wrote to those “loved by God” (Romans 1:7), and exalted the grace and peace and power of God (Romans 1:7, 16). Gifts come from somewhere, from someone (see also James 1:17). ## An Ordained Gift God exists, and God reigns. This is the only way that it is possible for "all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28). And, in fact, individuals are chosen for salvation in Christ, the nation of Israel is chosen to (come back to) salvation Christ, and the great chain of our eternal life is secure as well as the great timeline of human history. God has “predestined (us) to be conformed to the image of his Son” (Romans 8:29). ## An Eternal Gift It goes beyond human history. What Jesus has accomplished has effect on earth and in heaven, it has effect in this life and the next. The promise is eternal life. > For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23) The gospel lifts up our heads beyond the sun. ## A Loving Gift This is personal, from and through and to God. Jesus is the Son of His love (Colossians 1:13), and Jesus is the proof of His love for us, and in Jesus we can never be separated from His love. > God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8) > Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress…? (Nothing) in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Dominus. (Romans 8:35, 39) ## A Potent Gift The gospel is "the power of God to salvation" (Romans 1:16). The word for "power" is *dunamis*. It obviously cannot mean dynamite, because no such thing existed in Paul's day. The gospel is not God's dynamite, not at least in Paul's mind. But, as we acknowledge that dynamite can't be the right interpretation, I've come around to wonder if dynamite isn't a good *illustration*. The gift of God demolishes our lusts. It ruins our ungratefulness and selfishness and disorder and division. It breaks our slavery to brokenness. But the gift of God does so in such a way that it's still gift, and bankrupts our self-righteousness. We don't fight lusts with better rules, we fight lust with the gift. We are not saved by what we don't do or what we do, not at all. We're saved in such a way that we have nothing to boast in save Jesus Christ and His righteousness (Romans 3:27). Gift all the way down and around, gift that destroys our immorality and our morality. Gospel grace leaves us with nothing except *everything*. Gospel grace potently strips away what we think are our virtues while also putting to death our vices. Where the gospel of gift has gone, where the dominion of gift has spread, there are more politics without coercion, there are economies based on supply more than demand, there are men who give themselves in responsibility rather than demand service to themselves. # Conclusion From Him and through Him and to Him are all *gifts* (per Romans 11:36). What do we do with this? We say, Amen! We believe. We receive the gift by faith (as we receive the gift of faith itself). We live *from faith to faith*. > Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the [merciful and gracious and free GIFTS] of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, 1acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. (Romans 12:1, NASB) And the wrath of God comes on those who refuse to acknowledge God and give Him thanks. Give Him thanks for what? For all the gifts He's given. ---------- ## Charge Most of the time I don't aim to raise more questions than answers, but there are some questions that stimulate more faith than doubt. Let these questions, relentlessly relevant because of the evangel, be gifts to your faith in and obedience to the Lord this week. ## Benediction: > What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? (Romans 8:31–32, ESV)

2/28/21: For the readings of the Second Sunday of Lent we discuss the theme of God's plan and faith. God's PROVIDEnce--all that God is more than willing and ready to give us--is beyond our imagination. In the previous episode we discussed God's faithfulness to his promises, in this episode, we discuss God's extravagance and generosity in fulfilling all of His covenant promises. Our response is faith. Faith is more than just a knowledge of God but a lived knowledge that ends in personal trust in God and His will and power. “What eye has not seen, and ear has not heard... what God has prepared for those who love him” (1 Cor 2:9, cf. Isaiah 64:3). Link to the Readings: https://bible.usccb.org/bible/readings/022821.cfm 1st Reading: The attempted sacrifice of Isaac proves Abraham's faith in a God whom Abraham knew to be able to “raise up children to Abraham from these stones.” (Jesus in Matthew 3:8, see also Luke 3:8). The key to Abraham's faith was that he held nothing back not even his “only begotten Son.” Sound Familiar? Responsorial Psalm: “I will walk before the Lord in the land of the Living.” To walk in God's presence is a euphemism for living a life of true faith and constant prayer. We walk with God to the “Land of the living”--heaven. 2nd Reading: “If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son…” Romans 8:31-32. Paul writes rhetorical questions to prove God's goodness and generosity. God gives us His “Only begotten Son”--that which is most precious to God. There is nothing else that God would keep from us if He did not even hold back His Son. Gospel: The Gospel is the story of the Transfiguration--the fourth luminous mystery of the Rosary. It reveals Jesus as God's “beloved Son” (Mark 9:7), His Only-begotten. This reveals to Peter, along with James and John, that Jesus is beyond anything he imagined Jesus to be. #ProjectWhetstone #BlazeMinistry707

Scripture Reading: Matthew 5:43-48 “I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” Matthew 5:44 In this passage Jesus flips a common saying from that day on its head. People would commonly splice the Old Testament command to “love your neighbor” (Leviticus 19:18) with a vengeful phrase: “. . . and hate your enemy.” The people typically considered anyone from another nation as an enemy. And they were probably stunned to hear Jesus say, “I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” What’s radical about Jesus’ demand is that it’s not just aiming for “peaceful coexistence,” “live and let live,” or “let bygones be bygones.” He’s commanding proactive, practical love. We are commanded to love our enemies and to seek the best for them—not just so that they will leave us alone. An important part of loving our enemies, Jesus says, includes praying for them. Frankly, it’s impossible to keep hating someone if we’re praying for their good. Praying for our enemies helps us to see them as God sees them. It helps us to begin to care about their needs and treat them like a neighbor. Unfortunately, we all have antagonists of one sort or another. Jesus himself calls us to love those people and to pray for them and for their well-being. After all, that’s what he did for us. “While we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son” (Romans 5:10). Father, we were your enemies, but now, in Jesus, we are your children. Help us to pray for and to love our enemies. Amen.

God is for you! Is that not the best statement in the world? He is not against you; He is for you. God is on your side. He is your Creator and wants nothing more than to be your Father. The question is not His love you; but your love for Him. Those Who Love God Not only has the Father gone to great lengths to bring you back into the Family - not even sparing His own Son (Romans 8:32) - but He promises to work all things for good. Think about that. All things will work out good - even the awful things - for those who love God. Who are those who love God? According to Jesus in John 14, those who love God are those who keep His commandments. Conversely, those who do not love God are those who do not keep His commandments. Pretty straight forward. Your obedience to God's commands are the evidence and proof of your love for Him. Don't follow Him and it's clear you don't love Him. That simple. The Reward So what is the reward for those who love God? How does His reward reflect that God is for you and not against you? Again, simple. He has already pre-determined (i.e. predestined) that you will receive a glorified body just as Jesus has received His. Remember the context of Romans 6-8. Paul is describing our relationship as redeemed spirits to the Law of God. Our yet-unredeemed-body is still corrupted by sin and resistant to our desire to serve God through obedience. The "reward" for faithfully pursuing holiness - after being justified and born again for this purpose - is exchanging a corrupted flesh for uncorrupted flesh. Our "hope" is the promise of full and complete redemption; a "born again" body to house an-already-born-again-spirit. The Bible calls it our "resurrection from the dead." And as such, Jesus was the first to experience it. Our inheritance is to experience and possess the same. God Is For You The evidence of this fact is clear. As the Judge in your trial for sin, He has already determined that, though you are guilty, your penalty has already been paid. Therefore, no charges or accusations against you can result in any eternal punishment. That's the promise of justification. Likewise, the promise of regeneration and sanctification is that regardless of any circumstances you may encounter; in spite of any and all sufferings, pain, tragedies, or disasters you may experience, God still loves you. His love for you will be made evident through the completion of your redemption. Meaning, you will be glorified and made whole in your salvation. Nothing is more awesome than that! ______________________________________ Study Romans From the Beginning - Click Here

Sermon Recording Sermon OutlineSpeaker: Rev. Charles DrewSermon Series: SufferingGenesis 1:1-5, 26-31, John 1:1-5 (ESV) 1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. 3 And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day… 26 Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth." 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. 28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth." 29 And God said, "Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. 30 And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food." And it was so. 31 And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day. John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.Sermon OutlineIntroduction: Suffering is woven into everything. How are we supposed to understand and cope with it? I) We tell ourselves that God is good.God made a “very good” cosmos because he himself is good. • Psalm 100:4-5: Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name! 5 For the LORD is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations. Why should we believe it, especially at a time like this?A) God’s goodness, though real, is not always easily discernible.“Were you there when I laid the foundations of the earth?...Have you commanded the morning since your days began?...Can you bind the cluster of the Pleiades, or loose the belt of Orion?...Who has put wisdom in the mind? Or who has given understanding to the heart” (Job 38:4, 12, 31, 36)God moves in a mysterious way, his wonders to perform; He plants his footsteps in the sea and rides upon the storm.Dark in unfathomable mines of never failing skillHe treasures up his bright designs, and works his sovereign will.Blind unbelief is sure to err, and scan his work in vain.God is his own interpreter, and he will make it plain. (William Cowper)Embrace our limits.Don’t be glib.B) God’s goodness is committed to our long-term transformation.Genesis 1.26: Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.”Made for him, we tend to “worship the creature rather than the Creator” (Romans 1)What the corona virus teaches us: C) God’s goodness is always richly present. Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth." 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. 28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth. 29 And God said, "Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food." “Why hasn’t it fallen out before—or for such a long time?”The earth is filled with the steadfast love of the Lord (Psalm 33:5)Deliberately itemize God’s love.• Learn from Jeremiah:“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases. His mercies they never come to an end. They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness, O Lord.” (Lamentations 3:23). • Note God’s steadfast love to us in the gift of his Son.He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? (Romans 8:32) II) We deal with suffering by fighting it“Let there be light!” means more than, “Let’s have some photons so that we can see what is going on.” “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (John 1:5) When God walked among us he assaulted and threw down evil and suffering wherever he encountered them. God invites us to join him in the assault. We get to applaud health care workers…wave at bus drivers…support vaccine research…wear masks…champion efforts to insure that the poor, hungry, and jobless find relief…because God has come “to wipe every tear from our eyes”. We get to protest police brutality…looting…and destruction because…How good it is to have something legitimately to hate! How good to rejoice that God hates it too: “Behold, I am making all things new!”Prayer of ConfessionAlmighty God, our heavenly Father, you tell us that you are good and that our lives and world are full of your steadfast love. You have shown us your love vividly in the gift of your Son and have guaranteed in him that it will triumph. But we are more apt to believe our circumstances and our feelings than your word. We are more apt to dwell on our sufferings than on yours. We are more apt to want happiness than goodness. We are more apt to blame you for our broken world than to ask ourselves what we have done or failed to do that has contributed to the brokenness. Forgive us. By your Spirit fill us with your goodness: increase our zeal for fighting against all that is wrong and untrue in ourselves and in our world. We pray in the name of Jesus, who lived and died to put all things right. Amen.Questions for ReflectionSuffering is woven into the fabric of our lives. Sometimes we cause it for others (as when we infect someone with the corona virus because we don’t wear a mask), sometimes others bring it upon us (as with police brutality), sometimes we bring it on ourselves (as when career obsession isolates us), and sometimes it just happens without reason (as when covid-19 infection is deadly for one person and unnoticeable for someone else). Recall one instance in the past month when suffering has been woven into your experience. How have you dealt with it? Some argue that suffering proves either that God does not exist, or that he does not care, or that he is weak. How do you respond to this problem? The Bible asserts that God is good but that the way he works out his goodness is not always discernable to us. Reflect on the questions he puts to Job when he comes to him towards the end of the book. How would you respond to these questions: “Were you there when I laid the foundations of the earth?...Have you commanded the morning since your days began?...Can you bind the cluster of the Pleiades, or loose the belt of Orion?...Who has put wisdom in the mind? Or who has given understanding to the heart” (Job 38:4, 12, 31, 36) Paul writes that God “causes all things to work together for good” and then goes on to say that that “good” is that we should be “conformed to the image of his Son” (Romans 8:28, 29) How might this definition of “good” differ from yours and how might it help you understand why God permits certain difficulties to come your way or to come the way of those you love? When the bottom falls out of our lives, or threatens to, it is very hard. But it is also potentially revealing. If we are spiritually attuned, we will ask, ‘Why hasn’t it fallen out before—or for such a long time?’ And this question can lead us to a sense of wonder and gratitude for the ways that God has quietly and consistently cared for us through long stretches of our lives. Take five minutes to write out a prayer of thanks to God in which you itemize the particular ways he has shown his kindness to you over the past week: start with meals, shelter, and zoom calls with friends, and move on from there. It is the gift of Jesus (who is here to stay), and not the gifts of this life (which come and go), that proves God’s goodness and secures our future. He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? (Romans 8:32). Thank God for the gift of Jesus. When God walked among us in Jesus, he assaulted and threw down evil and suffering wherever he encountered them. God does not explain suffering; he attacks it. And he invites us to join him in that attack. What is one way that you can go on the offensive against covid-19 or injustice this week?

I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think. Glory to him in the church and in Christ Jesus through all generations forever and ever! Amen.' Our natural tendency is to hate our enemies or at least to avoid them at all cost. But if you run from conflict, you’re going to be miserable most of your life. Jesus calls us to a higher standard. He calls us to be peacemakers — not peacekeepers. There’s a huge difference. Peacekeepers avoid conflict and pretend it doesn’t exist. But peacemakers resolve conflict and reconcile relationships.18 And those who are peacemakers will plant seeds of peace and reap a harvest of righteousness. (James 3:18 ).When you plant a seed, you always get back more than you started with. If you plant an apple seed, you get a whole tree full of apples in return. It’s the law of sowing and reaping. If you plant a seed of conflict, you’ll wind up with a lot more trouble than you bargained for. But the Bible says if you plant seeds of peace, you will reap a harvest of peace, kindness, and goodness in return. So how do you do that? One of the most important life skills that you will ever learn is conflict resolution. Make the first move. Don’t wait for the person to come to you. You take the initiative. Buy that person a cup of coffee or go to lunch together. Jesus took the initiative to show mercy to us. The Bible says, “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us .... While we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son” (Romans 5:8b, 10a ESV). Jesus didn’t wait for us to apologize. He didn’t even wait for us to feel bad about our behavior. Jesus made the first move. And he wants us to do the same thing. Ask God for wisdom. God is always glad to help you when you’re doing what he says. The Bible says, “If you want to know what God wants you to do, ask him, and he will gladly tell you” (James 1:5a TLB). Ask God to help you decide the right time and the right place to plan a peace conference. Ask him to give you the right words to say and the right way to say them. Have you ever witnessed the raw, transformative power of unconditional love? Our latest episode delves into the heartwarming parable of the prodigal son, illuminating the beauty of reconciliation and the boundless grace that awaits us all. We share an encounter that beautifully exemplifies the joy of embracing our identity as beloved children of God and the overwhelming gratitude that can flow from such acceptance. Alongside this, we tackle the challenging directives of Romans chapter 12, verses 17 to 21, which compel us to replace retaliation with compassion and to disarm hostility with sincere love.Join us as we explore the striking metaphor of "heaping burning coals" on an adversary's head, peeling back layers of traditional interpretation to reveal a message of shared humanity and the warmth of kindness. We discuss the surprising ways that simple acts, like sharing the very essence of our hearth with a neighbor in conflict, can be a catalyst for reflection and transformation. Listen as we uncover the unexpected impact love and kindness can have in overcoming evil, and how these actions can lead to growth and change that resonates with the true spirit of the gospel.**Description generated by AI.Save the dates! lovereality.org/events

Loving people is hard. Loving unlovable people is particularly difficult. But loving your enemy? That command seems insane. But this is the love of Christ: “While we were God's enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son” (Romans 5:10). And this is why God calls us to love our enemies. He doesn't call us to do something he hasn't already done. Dr. Preston Sprinkle unpacks Matthew 5:38-48 which contains Jesus's final, and most radical, example of his way: enemy love. Jesus' command to “love your enemies” was the most popular verse in the early church. Matthew 5:44 was the so-called John 3:16 for the first 300 years of Christianity. It seems that Jesus's cross-shaped nonviolent, non-retaliatory, enemy love should be the dominant, most pervasive rhythmn of evangelical Christianity—and yet, it's currently not.
