What do you do?   For this Women of Color Rise episode, Analiza talks with Sonia Pérez, COO of UnidosUS, the nation's largest Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization. Sonia was the youngest of eight siblings, growing up in the projects in Brooklyn, New York. Despite limited access to quality schools, she was able to enter an elite public high school and then later Brown University. But her father did not understand why Sonia wanted to leave their community to attend Brown. He did not speak to Sonia for the entire summer.   What did Sonia do? She stayed true to her commitment to education and opportunity. She also stayed true to her family. She knew she was not leaving for good. Her plan was to come back.   The day before Sonia left for Brown, her father reconciled with her, “You will always have a home here.”   Sonia shares how this experience helped shape her life choices. She returned to family–caring for her mother in law in Puerto Rico and then back to New York. She also chose a career in education policy after attending the Kennedy School at Harvard. Hello Friends! Today begins my 3 episode series: All About Gut Health! Some of you may know that I am a Ph.D. student who has a love for conducting research on the gut-brain connection. Gut health is so important, and I will be posting a 3 part series sharing gut health stories from two inspiring athletes, Sonia P, and Ali Feller. Sonia is a Division 1 runner who has an inspiring story of how she dealt with gut health issues due to underfueling, overcame underfueling, and healed her gut. Growing up in Brooklyn, Sonia Pérez recalled how her father would drink beer, sit on the sofa and lose himself in records from Puerto Rico, where he grew up. One day, he stopped listening. Sonia and her siblings wondered why.  On the other side of the world, in Ireland, Grainne Armstrong recalls the moment she experienced her daughter's love for the first time, set to a soundtrack of opera and birdsong. Today, two stories about a parent and child longing for a deeper connection – and how music sparked their understanding of one another.

Niños callados, apartados, extraños, que viven en su mundo particular, un mundo al que no podemos acceder y que no podemos entender. Pero en realidad no tenemos claro qué sucede exactamente en su cabeza. ¿Sufren? ¿Piensan? ¿Entienden qué les ocurre? ¿Se emocionan o, por el contrario, les cuesta experimentar sentimientos? ¿Ven y oyen como nosotros? ¿Tienen su propio lenguaje? ¿Están realmente desconectados del mundo por completo? Si salimos a la calle y hacemos estas preguntas a cualquiera, al azar, seguramente casi nadie sería capaz de contestarlas ni con un mínimo de certeza. El autismo está rodeado de mitos, de ideas preconcebidas, de rumores y sobre todo de silencio. Ese silencio insoportable con el cubrimos todo aquello que nos asusta, que no comprendemos o ante lo que nos sentimos impotentes. Hoy en El Abrazo del Oso intentamos junto a Alberto Cabañas y Sonia Pérez, madre de un niño con autismo, romper ese silencio para comprender qué es el autismo y quiénes son los autistas.

Sonia es una chica de 41 años, normal, con una vida normal, con un trabajo normal y con un problema cada vez más común. Es celíaca y por lo tanto alérgica al gluten. Lo supo hace relativamente poco cuando estuvo a punto de morir por una intoxicación severa que afecto a uno de sus órganos. Cuando consiguió superar ese mal trago decidió que iba a cuidarse mucho más... Y también mejor. Con el apoyo de su familia y sus hijos empezó a correr.
