Happy Father's Day to all the fathers around the world!01 The Origin of Father's Day父亲节的起源父亲节originated in(起源于)美国,began in the early 20th century(开始于二十世纪早期),是因为Sonora Smart Dodd想要honor(纪念)她的父亲William Smart。 This became what we now celebrate as Father's Day. 现在这个节日is widely celebrated on the third Sunday of June(普遍在六月的第三个星期天庆祝)。 在1945年,it was proposed in 1945 by patriots in Shanghai(它在上海由爱国者们提出),为的是honor fathers who died in the war(纪念在战争中牺牲的父亲们)。 02 The Image of Fathers in Different Cultures父亲在不同文化中的形象在中国文化里,the traditional father image(传统的父亲形象)is mainly determined by(主要取决于)the family division of labor(家庭分工),也就是我们常说的“男主外,女主内”。• division /dɪˈvɪʒ(ə)n/ n.分配这种cultural tradition(文化传统)对男性角色的定位是:男人们必须assume the economic responsibility of the family(承担家庭的经济责任),并且engage in more social activities outside the home(更多参与到家庭以外的社会活动中)。在美国,父亲也是traditionally seen as(传统意义上被看作)breadwinners(养家糊口的人)。不过现在,越来越多的父亲are more involved in parenting(更多地参与到养育孩子的过程中)。• breadwinner n. 03 The Fathers of Our Hosts主播们的父亲主播Erin的父亲has always been present(全程都在)。He had always been there for her(他一直陪在她身边)since she was young. Erin会记得父亲在elementary school(小学)的时候taught her to skate(教她滑冰)和ride a bike。She trust him so much.这些对培养一个人的sense of potency(力量感)和spirit of adventure(冒险精神)都是很重要的。• potency /ˈpoʊt(ə)nsi/ n.支配力She's so thankful for her father. 在过去的十年里,当她spent a lot of time commuting to swim practice(为了游泳训练而花很长时间通勤)的时候,她的父亲总会坐在车里,边工作边等她,never once complained(从来没有抱怨过一次) 。这种从父亲那里得到的companionship(陪伴)和encouragement(鼓励),让Erin总能感受到他的silent support(默默的支持)。• commute /kəˈmju:t/ v. 他们可以带给孩子们security(安全)、strength(力量)还有encouragement(鼓励)。他们会foster(培养)a sense of adventure(一种冒险精神)和creativity(创造力)in their child,这点是essential for their growth(对于孩子们的成长不可或缺)。• foster v.促进,培养主播Flora的父亲fits the stereotypes of a traditional Chinese father(很符合一位传统的中国父亲的形象)。He was hardly involved in her life and studies.(他几乎不参与她的生活和学业),但与此同时,he was very strict with her(他对她要求非常严格)and very demanding of her(对她要求很高)。当她想起父亲的时候,the first thing that comes to mind(第一个想到的)就是他的harshness(严厉),所以她发现自己不知道如何去to be grateful(感恩)以及appreciate(领会)这种严厉的爱。• stereotype /ˈsteriətaɪp/ n. You cannot decide who loves you, but you can always choose to love yourself.(你无法决定谁爱你,但你总是可以爱你自己。)• altruistic /ˌæltruˈɪstɪk/ adj.
Send us a Text Message. This week I decided to replay Episode 3 a fathers Special I recorded last year. I hope you enjoy This Flashback Podcast. I will be back in two weeks with another missing persons podcast. Historians say the first Father's Day card was created nearly 4000 years ago by a young man that carved it in a piece of clay, assuming a tablet of sorts. He carved his special message wishing his father good health and long life. The first Father's Day memorial service was held on July 5, 1908, to honor the 361 men that were killed in a Tragic mine disaster in Fairmont West Virgina December of 1907. Out of these 361 men, 250 of them were fathers. It was a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd that is credited for Father's Day becoming what it is today. According to a story on education.com, Sonora Dodd, the daughter of a widowed Civil war veteran came up with the idea while listening to a Mother's Day Sermon at her church in 1909. She was inspired to create a special day to honor her father as well as others. She wanted the first Father's Day to be June 5th which was her father's birthday, however, the city and community leaders said they needed more time to prepare so it was moved to June 19, 1910. The idea caught on, by 1924 President Coolidge supported a petition for a national Father's Day and a national Father's Day committee was formed in New York city in 1926. President Johnson in 1966 designated the 3rd Sunday in June as Father's Day but it wasn't until 1972 that President Nixon established Father's Day as a national holiday. Sonora is also credited with making the rose the official flower of Father's Day. Wearing a red rose signified your father was still living, wearing a white rose was to honor your father that had passed away. She was said to have brought roses and gifts to any father in the community that was unable to make it to the church services where roses were given out to honor the fathers of the church. Some fun Facts about Father's Day, Because of Sonora Dodd, Washington was the first state to celebrate Father's Day. Sonora was from Spokane, Washington.Across the pond in Europe Father's Day has it roots in the Middle Ages to honor Saint Joseph on March 19th Saint Joseph was the foster father of Jesus. It eventually turned into a day to honor the institution of fatherhood in general. For the French its all about lighters. Still being related to the celebration of Saint Joseph, this tradition had started to fade in the years after World War II. to reignite the consumer interest in spending money on dad, a French lighter company called Flaminaire created a new Father's Day in 1949 to help sell their products and the ad campaign was successful and has been observed in France ever since. Father's Day is a holiday honoring one's father, or relevant father figure, as well as fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in society. The single most common date among world countries is the third Sunday of June, which was founded in the state of Washington, United States, by Sonora Smart Dodd in 1910. The message was brought to you by Rev Dr Jesses Williams.
Someday I will find my Prince, but my Daddy will always be my King.” So true, so cute, and so very innocent. Isn't? I found this beautiful quote while exploring the greeting cards section in my local store. Father's Day in the United States is the third Sunday of June. It celebrates the contribution fathers and father figures make to their children's lives. Today, at Mother's Gurukul podcast, let's celebrate Father's Day!! I was curious to know more about Father's Day, and I found something interesting. ‘A woman called Sonora Smart Dodd was an influential figure in the establishment of Father's Day. She is also recognized as the mother of Father's Day. Her father was a civil war veteran who raised six children by himself after the death of their mother. This was uncommon at that time, as many widowers placed their children in the care of others or quickly married again. Sonora was inspired by the work of Anna Jarvis, who had pushed forMother's Day celebrations. Sonora felt that her father deserved recognition for what he had done. The first time Father's Day was held in June was in 1910. President Nixon officially recognized Father's Day as a holiday in 1972.' The first celebration of Father's Day was in the Spokane, Washington YMCA on June 19, 1910. It had been founded by Sonora Smart Dodd who thought after hearing a sermon about Mother's Day that there should also be a similar day for fathers. Her own father, William Jackson Smart, was a Civil War veteran and was a single parent who raised she and her five siblings. The celebration didn't catch on immediately and with Dodd's studies taking much of her time, she didn't promote it. However, U.S. President Calvin Coolidge recommended it to be observed as a national holiday in 1924 but stopped short of issuing a national proclamation. In 1966 President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers and designating the third Sunday in June as Father's Day. Six years later, the day was made a permanent national holiday when President Richard Nixon signed it into law in 1972. Today, Father's Day is celebrated around the world on various dates. Mexico, Germany, Thailand, and Japan all celebrate the holiday, though some on a different day. So as we look forward to celebrating dads on Father's Day, think of some special ways to honor a special man in your life. Respect is one of the qualities that is lacking most in many households and actually in our society. Just remember that respect and honor for each other should not only happen on a single day. The development and nurturing of relationships and friendships happen over a lifetime. They are worth the effort and the little bit of self-sacrifice to make others feel appreciated, respected and listened to pays off in droves for each other. I encourage you on this Father's Day to not neglect those men in your life who have, are or even will be taking on the role of a Father. Because you really can't buy back these years! In this episode the Origins of Father's Day a little history and some special guests that are near and dear to my heart sharing some memories hopefully to incite some of your own. I'm here with Michael Herst I'm here with my lovely wife and Co host Diane Welcome to One More Thing Before You Go Over the Teacup Sunday “The campaign to celebrate the nation's fathers did not meet with the same enthusiasm– as mother's day perhaps because, as one florist explained, “fathers haven't the same sentimental appeal that mothers have.” But here we are June 17, 2022 celebrating another Father's Day to everyone of you fathers out there which I'm told there are about 70 million of us here in the United states alone. So stay tuned we're going to talk a little bit about the history of Father's Day and here for some very special people in my life as well to share this day with you “On July 5, 1908, a West Virginia church sponsored the nation's first event explicitly in honor of fathers, a Sunday sermon in memory of the 362 men who had died in the previous December's explosions at the Fairmont Coal Company Monongah mine, but it was a one-time commemoration and not an annual holiday. The next year, a Spokane, Washington, woman named Sonora Smart Dodd, one of six children raised by a widower, tried to establish an official equivalent to Mother's Day for male parents. She went to local churches, the YMCA, shopkeepers and government officials to drum up support for her idea, and she was successful: Washington State celebrated the nation's first statewide Father's Day on June 19, 1910. It was not until 1972—58 years after President Woodrow Wilson made Mother's Day official—that the day honoring fathers became a nationwide holiday in the United States. Father's Day 2022 will occur on Sunday, June 19.” (The History Channel June 16 2022 https://www.history.com/news/hitler-death-cause-teeth-analysis) More at https://beforyougopodcast.com This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Podcorn - https://podcorn.com/privacy

In 1898, when Sonora Smart was 16 years old, her mother died during the birth of her sixth child. Sonora was the only daughter in the family. She helped her father raise her younger brothers. I'm sure it was a lot of hard work as they ran a farm near Spokane, Washington. Eventually, Sonora married John Dodd.2 In 1909, Sonora Smart Dodd wanted to create a holiday to honor fathers. At the time, 45 states were observing Mother's Day. Dodd thought that fathers should be honored in a similar way. You see, she had experienced the dedication of her father in caring for his family following her mother's death. So, Sonora worked to convince churches, store owners and the government to create the holiday. She wanted the holiday to be observed on her father's birthday. The Spokane churches picked the third Sunday in June instead. Because of her efforts, the State of Washington recognized the first Father's Day on June 19, 1910. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge encouraged all states to observe the holiday. But it was not until 1972 that President Nixon proclaimed Father's Day a permanent federal holiday.1 This week the podcast will spend time looking at Fathers. We'll see the importance of earthly fathers as well as gain appreciation for our heavenly Father. Today, take a moment to join others in honoring your father and the fathers around you. This episode of The American Tapestry Project continues our exploration of how Americans weave the common objects of their love into the fabric of their national story through the things they celebrate, the games they play and sometimes the politics they forget. We'll meet more Unsung American heroes – people who changed America who you might not know. Who was Ann Reeves Jarvis and her daughter Anna Maria Jarvis and what did they have to do with Mother's Day? Who was Sonora Smart Dodd and Marian McQuade? Everyone knows Jackie Robinson, but who were Larry Doby, William Clarence Matthews and Moses “Fleetwood” Walker? Who was Ed Abbaticchio? And, although he's scarcely unsung, who was Henry Clay and what was his “The American System”? We'll begin with Henry Clay's “The American System” which invented the business model upon which America was built. Then we'll switch to Freedom's Faultlines and The Immigrant's Tale exploring baseball, segregation & immigration. And, since this program first airs on Mothers' Day, we'll conclude with a detailed look into the origins of those venerable American holidays – Mother's Day, Father's Day and Grandparent's Day.
Yes, I’m still way behind on taming the weeds in the garden, the beans still need to be planted. And to top it off, harvesting is beginning. I’ve already picked green peas for shelling and snow peas. I froze four packages and had plenty left over for several meals. Now the shelling peas need to be picked again. This time there will be lots and lots and lots of them. I may freeze some and can some. We’ll see. Freezer space is at a premium right now. The potatoes are ready to be dug up and dried and I have plenty of spring onions available to add fresh to any dish. Happy and good lamb news. We had a late arrival a few days ago. That brings our total to 10 lambs this year and zero loses. We’ve never had that kind of success rate. Mother nature usually has her way with at least one or two. We have been truly blessed this year. The herd shares are going gangbusters. Only a couple of slots left there. And so many are interested in the cheese. During the summer we offer milk, yogurt, butter and cream, while winter will provide lots of cheese and butter. My schedule may change in that area due to the requests of the herd share owners. Many want the cheese now in lieu of the milk. Next month their wishes will become reality. The quail are growing like crazy. Scott devised a way to alter their feeding trays so they don’t waste so much. That’s working out fine. The roosters are beginning to crow. It’s not a like a chicken at all. When I go and visit them and care for them, they are all standing in a row in front of the door looking out. They are so cute and funny. Scott is moving along with the creamery walls. And that’s about it for the homestead updates. Let’s get to the topic of the day. The Tradition of Father’s Day Last month we looked at the tradition of Mother’s Day. Today we look at the tradition of Father’s Day. And more importantly, why children need fathers (or at the very least father-figures) in their lives. Today retailers and marketers, in an effort to make a quick buck, have completely changed the original meaning of Father’s Day. A holiday that was created to honor dad and enumerate his special qualities is now used as a marketing tool. Such is the way of life in our very affluent country. Let’s take a look at the roots and history of Father’s Day. The Religious Roots and Tradition A customary day for the celebration of fatherhood in Catholic Europe is known to date back to at least the Middle Ages, and it is observed on March 19, as the feast day of Saint Joseph, who is referred to as the fatherly Nutritor Domini ("Nourisher of the Lord") in Catholicism and "the putative father of Jesus" in southern European traditions. This celebration was brought to the Americas by the Spanish and Portuguese, and in many countries Father's Day is still celebrated on March 19. The Catholic Church actively supported the custom of a celebration of fatherhood on St. Joseph's day from either the last years of the 14th century or from the early 15th century. The History of Father’s Day in the United States Father's Day was not celebrated in the US, outside Catholic traditions, until the 20th century. As a civic celebration in the US, it was inaugurated in the early 20th century to complement Mother's Day by celebrating fathers and male parenting. There are two stories of when the first Father’s Day was celebrated in the United States. According to some accounts, the first Father’s Day was celebrated in Washington state on June 19, 1910. A woman by the name of Sonora Smart Dodd came up with the idea of honoring and celebrating her father while listening to a Mother’s Day sermon at church in 1909. She felt as though mothers were getting all the acclaim while fathers were equally deserving of a day of praise (Likely she would be displeased that Mother’s Day still gets the lion’s share of attention). Sonora’s dad was quite a man. William Smart, a veteran of the Civil War, was left a widower when his wife died while giving birth to their sixth child. He went on to raise the six children by himself on their small farm in Washington. To show her appreciation for all the hard work and love William gave to her and her siblings, Sonora thought there should be a day to pay homage to him and other dads like him. She initially suggested June 5th, the anniversary of her father’s death to be the designated day to celebrate Father’s Day, but due to some bad planning, the celebration in Spokane, Washington was deferred to the third Sunday in June. The other story of the first Father’s Day in America happened all the way on the other side of the country in Fairmont, West Virginia on July 5, 1908. Grace Golden Clayton suggested to the minister of the local Methodist church that they hold services to celebrate fathers after a deadly mine explosion killed 361 men. While Father’s Day was celebrated locally in several communities across the country, unofficial support to make the celebration a national holiday began almost immediately. William Jennings Bryant was one of its staunchest proponents. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge recommended that Father’s Day become a national holiday. But no official action was taken. In 1966, Lyndon B. Johnson, through an executive order, designated the third Sunday in June as the official day to celebrate Father’s Day. However, it wasn’t until 1972, during the Nixon administration, that Father’s Day was officially recognized as a national holiday. It took a while, but we got there. Fathers are celebrated in our country every year on the 3rd Sunday in June. Father’s Day Around the World Other countries also picked up on the idea of Father’s Day. It is, after all, quite profitable. While many followed suit by celebrating it on the third Sunday in June, some decided to honor dad on different dates. So, to make sure you know when to pay your respects to dear old dad wherever you may be, here’s a list of the two most prominent dates and associated countries where Father’s Day is celebrated around the world. March 19– The religious celebration, is observed in Angola, Belgium, Bolivia, Croatia, Honduras, Italy, Lichtenstein, Portugal, Spain, and Switzerland. Third Sunday in June– The US version, is also observed in Antigua, Bahamas, Bangladesh, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Columbia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Cyprus, Czech Republic, France, Greece, Guyana, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Jamaica, Japan, Malaysia, Malta, Mexico, Netherlands, Pakistan, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Singapore, Slovakia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, Trinidad, Turkey, United Kingdom, Venezuela, and Zimbabwe. A few made the list twice. Once for the religious celebration and the second for the secular celebration. Why Fathers are Important in a Child’s Life This is a topic I’m very interested in these days. In a time where men are often demonized at every turn for the smallest infraction, I feel the need to reiterate the facts and truth of the importance of men and father’s in the family. It is my opinion that way too many children are born today without a father’s loving presence. It has become common place for modern feminists to think they can “do it all” and they don’t need a man. It may be the biggest lie being perpetrated out there. I’ve spoken of this before and likely will again. It is detrimental to the health of women, their children and their relationships with the loving fathers of their children. It’s simply ridiculous to think that the full-time job of parenting and a full-time job providing financial income can be done at the same time. There simply aren’t enough hours in the day to do both simultaneously and do them well. The reason there was a separation of a wife and husband’s duties was not to somehow suppress the intelligence and creativity of women. Nope. It was simply the best arrangement for the best outcome of family cohesion and stability. There was never anything stopping women from having careers. In fact, many did have careers. It was a choice then and is still a choice now to be a wife and mother. And in today’s environment, having a career is still quite feasible after the little ones reach their teens and begin experimenting with adulthood. Moms will sometimes have lots more time to pursue whatever they desire. The children are raised by someone else and jobs often become drudgery for working mothers today. According to an article a few years ago in the Huffington Post, woman are unhappier today than ever before. It’s no wonder. We have to make choices. No one can “do it all”. We all make choices. And sometimes the choice is simply a matter of timing. Kids now, career later. Do it all in a linear fashion as opposed to lumping it all into a limited 24-hour day. The traditional family evolved over time and has sustained itself over time because it works. It works to ensure that society moves forward in an orderly fashion. Sure, there are all kinds of fancy family configurations in our world today and all have value. All families have value. Having said that, it does not change the scientifically proven fact that children do best in a stable household with both a father and a mother. The special family configurations seem to be getting all the attention these days, which is great. I’m just bringing a bit of attention back to our traditional family structure. It’s what this podcast is all about. It is my opinion that the traditional family structure is being neglected and pushed aside. There are many reasons, but my current pet peeve is for the welfare state that encourages single motherhood and discourages fathers from being part of their children’s lives. Money and other resources are severely cut back if a man is present in the household. As I said, it encourages single motherhood. This makes the life of mother and children much more difficult than it would be with a man in the picture. But for many growing up in the second and third generation of welfare, they know no other life. They know no other way to survive. My heart goes out to them. Anyone can father a child, but being a dad takes a lifetime. Fathers play a role in every child’s life that cannot be filled by others or state provided financial benefits. The role of the father can have a large impact on a child and help shape him or her into the person they become. Fathers and Emotional Development Fathers, just like mothers, are integral in the development of a child’s emotional well-being. Traditionally, children look to their fathers to lay down the rules and enforce them. They also look to their fathers to provide a feeling of physical and emotional security. Children naturally want to make their fathers proud. An involved father can promote inner strength and personal growth. Studies have shown that when fathers are affectionate and supportive, it greatly affects a child’s cognitive and social development. It also instills an overall sense of well-being and self-confidence. Fathers are important to your children’s emotional development. Fathers Set the Bar for Relationships with Others Fathers not only influence who we are inside, but how we have relationships with people as we grow. The way a father treats his child will influence what that child looks for in other people. Friends, lovers, and spouses will all be chosen based on how he or she perceived the meaning of the relationship with his or her father. The patterns a father sets in the relationships with his children will dictate how they relate to and interact with other people. Fathers and Their Daughters Young girls depend on their fathers for security and emotional support. A father shows his daughter what a good relationship with a man is like. If a father is loving and gentle, his daughter will look for those qualities in men when she’s old enough to begin dating. If a father is strong and valiant, she will relate closely to men of the same character. Fathers and Their Sons Unlike girls, who model their relationships with others based on their father’s character, boys will model themselves after their father’s character. Boys will seek approval from their fathers from a very young age. As human beings, we grow up and mature by imitating the behavior of those around us; that’s how we learn to function in the world. If a father is caring and treats people with respect, the young boy will grow up much the same. When a father is absent, young boys look to other male figures to set the “rules” for how to behave and survive in the world. Enter social media and online father-figure personalities. Enter the gangs. Enter the unsavory characters that can lead naïve youngsters astray. Again, mothers need to be at home with their children and they need to have stable relationships with the father of their children. A two-parent household consisting of a man and a woman is the ideal situation. Fathers are just as important as mothers. The online community is filled with great people that can be role models. But why have a substitute? Why not continue the tradition that has worked for as long as there have been humans? Have we thought deeply about what we are leaving behind? That online community is also filled with evil people who wish to do harm to others – often targeting children and young adults. The primary job of a parent, I would argue, is to protect our children – to keep them safe from harm. We need to be there for them. Fathers need to be there for them. As you celebrate your father on the third Sunday of June, ask him to show you how to grill a delicious, grass-fed burger. Tell him you love him and how much you appreciate him. Gourmet Grilled Chevon Burgers This recipe calls for ground goat. It's a great alternative to the same old hamburger. Goat, or chevon as it is widely known, is a staple red meat for much of the world outside the US. However, you can use whatever ground meat you prefer. The instructions call for using a cast iron skillet with lots of butter or oil. However, the grill works just as well. What you Need 1-pound goat burger, grass-fed is preferable 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard 1 teaspoon sea salt (or to taste) 1/2 teaspoon black pepper (or to taste) 1 teaspoon rosemary leaves, dried 1 teaspoon thyme leaves, dried 1 teaspoon cilantro, dried 1 teaspoon cumin, ground 1 medium onion, chopped 6 tablespoons vegetable oil or butter, divided Instructions Place the goat-burger in a mixing bowl, add Worcestershire sauce, mustard, salt, pepper, rosemary, thyme, cilantro, and cumin. Mix well. In a medium skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of the oil over medium to high heat. Add the onion, lower the heat, and sauté for about 2 minutes until nicely browned and caramelized. Add onions to burger mixture. Mix well. Shape into 4 patties. In a cast iron skillet heat the remaining olive oil or butter over medium-to-high heat. Cook the patties in oil or butter until medium to medium-well, about 8 - 10 minutes on each side. Notes NOTE 1: Don't skimp on the oil when using goat. Grass-fed chevon burger is very lean and needs the fat to help retain moisture and to prevent sticking. NOTE 2: As an alternative, you can use your gas grill. Final Thoughts That’s it for today’s Peaceful Heart FarmCast. If you are keeping up with the activities on the homestead, let me know what questions you have about what we do and why. As you move closer to the celebration of Father’s Day in a couple of weeks, why not contemplate why this structural tradition has been in place for as long as it has? And there is nothing better than smiling across the table at your dad while chomping on a delicious gourmet, grilled, grass-fed burger with all the trimmings. Sonora Smart Dodd was raised by her father William Smart along with her five brothers and sisters. Sonora Smart Dodd decided to celebrate the first Father’s Day in June, 1910 in her church in Spokane, Washington, with the support of the city ministerial association. President Calvin Coolidge declared the first national Father’s Day in 1924. It is right and good to recognize the irreplaceable place in human life of fathers and godly men. James Dobson said, “The very fiber of Western Civilization depends on the future role of masculinity in the home. The future of the family depends on the fathers.” Men, never underestimate your value, especially to your family and children as this story illustrates.

Both mothers and fathers are of vital importance in building a great house. They are our cornerstones of society. Today, we focus on fathers since it is Father’s Day. Father’s Day began in June 19,1920, with Sonora Smart Dodd celebrating her civil war veteran father William Jackson Smart, a single dad who raised six children. It was not until 1966 that President Lyndon B. Johnson proclaimed Father’s Day to be observed annually, and in 1966, President Richard Nixon signed Father’s Day into law. Now, today, we celebrate fathers and we identify what makes a great father.
The campaign to celebrate the nation's fathers did not meet with the same enthusiasm–perhaps because, as one florist explained, “fathers haven't the same sentimental appeal that mothers have.” On July 5, 1908, a West Virginia church sponsored the nation's first event explicitly in honor of fathers, a Sunday sermon in memory of the 362 men who had died in the previous December's explosions at the Fairmont Coal Company mines in Monongah, but it was a one-time commemoration and not an annual holiday. The next year, a Spokane,Washington woman named Sonora Smart Dodd, one of six children raised by a widower, tried to establish an official equivalent to Mother's Day for male parents. She went to local churches, the YMCA, shopkeepers and government officials to drum up support for her idea, and she was successful: Washington State celebrated the nation's first statewide Father's Day on July 19, 1910. Slowly, the holiday spread. In 1916, President Wilson honored the day by using telegraph signals to unfurl a flag in Spokane when he pressed a button in Washington, D.C.In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge urged state governments to observe Father's Day. However, many men continued to disdain the day. As
Last year I put together this set as a musical tribute to my father and to father s and fathers figures everywhere. The response was overwhelming. I got many comment from listeners saying how much the liked the mixed and how it reminded the of they father or how they had lost their fathers and this meant a lot to them. As a result "Father Says" became and remains my most popular podcast/mix to date. So For all of those who loved it and for my new followers who my not have heard it. I'mn releasing it again in honor of Father's Day. With this being father's Day Weekend I wanted to pay musical tribute to my father and to all the real fathers out there Happy father's Day. My father is a southern raised, God fearing, man full of home spun wisdom who did his best to provide for his wife and children. He would often spend time talking to us and me in particular (as I was his only son) in order for us to become self-reliant adults. I remember he would be fixing something around the house and would always tell me "come on son you need to learn how to do this, one day you will have a house of your own” as mentioned he was raised in the south during the '40 and '50 before moving to Chicago for good in 1957. He experienced, prejudice, segregation, and racism first hand, so he always taught us to know our history and be proud of who we were. He taught us how a good education, work ethic and self-respect would lead to a successful life. For all these things I'm thankful. In 1909, Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, was inspired to create a holiday honoring fathers. William Jackson Smart, her father, was a farmer and Civil War veteran that raised Sonora and her five younger brothers by himself after his wife, Ellen, died giving birth to their youngest child in 1898. While attending a Mother's Day church service in 1909, Sonora, then 27, came up with the idea. Within a few months, Sonora had convinced the Spokane Ministerial Association and the YMCA to set aside a Sunday in June to celebrate fathers. She proposed June 5, her father's birthday, but the ministers chose the third Sunday in June so that they would have more time after Mother's Day (the second Sunday in May) to prepare their sermons. So it was that on June 19, 1910, Sonora delivered presents to handicapped fathers, boys from the YMCA decorated their lapels with fresh-cut roses (red for living fathers, white for the deceased), and the city's ministers devoted their homilies to fatherhood. So here's a set full of tracks reminiscent of my father's words of wisdom and inspiration. Hope as you listen it reminds you of the things your father or father figure would say to you. Enjoys and I wish you peace, love, and a happy Father's Day.
