This week Dr. I. David Daniels speaks with Michael Flynn, a Cultural Anthropologist, about his views on culture, anthropology, safety, diversity, equity, and inclusion, his experience, and his focus on social inclusion and exclusion from the view of a social scientist. Cultural anthropologists study how people who share a common cultural system organize and shape the physical and social world around them and are, in turn, shaped by those ideas, behaviors, and physical environments. Michael's view of this topic is informed by his experience as the child of immigrants, who settled in the Midwest, but often felt both in and out of the social settings he was in at the same time. He'll share his professional journey focusing on how “in-groups,” “out-groups,” and the "cultural boxes" that humans create directly impact physical and psychological safety.

She is the first Polynesian Explorer and female Fellow in the history of the National Geographic Society. Episode 150: A Critical Analysis of Heritage Preservation in Libya In this podcast, AIMS Cultural Heritage Fellow Reem Furjani discusses her research in the Old City of Tripoli, the field of critical heritage studies and her work bridging scholarly research and practice. Cultural heritage studies is a burgeoning academic field that seeks to contribute and expand classic work on heritage practices by introducing bottom-up approaches to preservation theory and practice. Reem's work specifically integrates the involvement, thoughts and practices of inhabitants in preserving sites and spaces. In this approach, heritage moves beyond a static condition and instead becomes a living, and dynamic area of focus. Furjani eloquently condenses this academic field into approachable terms, thereby putting her own work in critical heritage studies into practice. The debate on heritage is not and should not be approached as something exclusive and limited to a field of technical experts, but as an inclusive movement that takes into consideration those living and experiencing heritage every day. Furjani integrates examples and experiences from her own work, specifically her various projects in the Old city of Tripoli, throughout this talk. Reem Furjani is a cultural activist and researcher focused on critical heritage studies and cultural democracy. She is the founder and director of Scene, a non-profit that protects cultural heritage in Tripoli. She is completing her PhD and holds a Masters Degree in Architecture from Cardiff University. Furjani was the AIMS Libya Cultural Heritage Fellow and is currently a fellow at the Oxford Center for Islamic Studies. Episode 149: Roman Dougga (Thougga) Heritage Preservation in an Antique City Dougga (Thugga) is one the best-preserved Roman towns in North Africa and it is just an hour and a half away from the capital Tunis in the governorate of Jendouba. Because of its excellent preservation and its position as a popular tourist attraction, Dougga serves as a wonderful example and experience of one of the many spaces of cultural heritage in Tunisia. In this podcast, Prof. Mounir Khélifa guides listeners through the basic history of Dougga and contextualizes broader discussions of cultural heritage in Tunisia. In his analysis of this specific ancient Roman site, he outlines what Tunisians need to prioritize as they move forward in their journey of preserving cultural heritage. Seeing as though Tunisia has a long and beautiful history it is up to individuals as well as the government and private organizations to protect and celebrate Tunisia's culture.  As a former professor and now director of the School for International Training study abroad program in Tunisia, Prof. Khélifa is well practiced in condensing thousands of years of history for listeners that are new to Tunisia. He works diligently to make sure his students understand Tunisia at a historical and political level by connecting multiple lines of thought.  Mounir Khelifa studied English at the Sorbonne and Yale where he received his MA and PhD. A professor of English language and literature at Tunis University he has taught for more than three decades poetry, poetics, literary theory and comparative literature. In addition to teaching, he has also been a director of English graduate studies and a senior advisor in the cabinet of the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, responsible for international cooperation and curricular reform. In 2012, he was made a lifetime member of the Tunisian Academy for the Arts, Letters, and Science. Episode 146: The Worlds of Safia Farhat   In this podcast, the visual artist Slim Gomri speaks about his role in preserving the artistic legacy of Tunisian fibre artist Safia Farhat (1924-2004). Having worked for a number of years at the Abdallah and Safia Farhat Foundation in Radès, near Tunis, Gomri has been involved in the programming of both the Centre des arts vivants and the Safia Farhat Museum in Radès. Established by Safia Farhat in 1982, the Centre des arts vivants offers residencies for artists and workshops in calligraphy, ceramics, textiles, photography, etching, and painting. The Safia Farhat Museum, which opened in 2016, displays Farhat's works, hosts a group exhibition once a year, and organizes film screenings.  Slim Gomri is a visual artist based in Tunis. His photobook Vie de pêcheurs (2021) is inspired by the artist's contact with the world of fishermen in different towns along the Tunisian coast. He is currently preparing a film on the fibre artist Safia Farhat, one of the most recognizable artists in Tunisian modern art. “If you are white, therefore, you are American. So where does that put everyone else who isn't?” inquires Suzette Chang, Cultural Anthropologist, Founder, and CEO of Thick Descriptions. In today's episode host D-Rich sits down with guests Suzette Chang, Speaker Vic Sorrell, and Anti-Racism Leadership Coach Jill Nagle to talk about white supremacy mythology and how to navigate white fragility when speaking about racism.    White people tend to look at racism as an intentional action, one they as “good white people” would never participate in. However, due to whiteness being the structural basis for socialization, white people cannot escape the inherent biases that result from the socialization process. White supremacy is a mythology in that it is an invented belief system that has been woven into our society to keep white people in power while keeping Black and Brown people in oppressive situations for hundreds of years. In order to make progress radicalizing white people to be anti-racist, they have to first understand that racism is not about being a good or bad person. And speaking about race is not in itself a racist undertaking. White people often become uncomfortable anytime race is mentioned, especially if they are addressed as “white” because of the stigma built into society around racism as a morality issue rather than a structural one. Ashely Meredith serves as the National Cultural Anthropologist and Deputy National Historic Preservation Officer for the Federated States of Micronesia. Micronesia is a sovereign island country in Oceania situated north east of Australia and Papua New guinea. consists of 600 islands covering a massive area of around 1 million square miles. There are 18 languages spoken across the islands. Echoing what we might call a traditional fieldwork approach, Ashley works with a team to document, preserve, and establish cultural pathways for different Micronesian communities. This includes work like demographics, surveys, linguistic studies and observational fieldwork. Her work also is applied anthropology. She talks with communities to understand what they want in terms of infrastructure, tourism, education, or heritage development and works with them to find resources, generate funding and support. Beyond this, she interfaces between communities, government and international relations including with the United States and UNESCO. Ashley's breadth of experience provides a key perspective for rethinking how we use data. This includes why we need qualitative data in a world obsessed with numbers, but also how transmission matters. As we explore in this conversation, transmission has to do with cultural practices like storytelling as much as with technological limitations such as internet speed across the islands.

Philip L. McKenzie is an anthropologist who uses his expertise in culture to advise organizations on how best to thrive in an increasingly challenging and uncertain environment. He is formerly a Junior Associate of the Museum of Modern Art and a member of the Apollo Circle of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He is a rabid music fan and accomplished DJ under the name 9 Is Water. Prior to his Duke MBA, Philip earned a bachelor of business administration from Howard University majoring in finance with a minor concentration in philosophy and African-American studies. Philip is born and bred in what he terms “Real Brooklyn” but travels extensively wherever the wind takes him. He is completing his first book titled No Shortcuts! The Revolutionaries Guide To The Future.

Although he certainly has a way with words, as evidenced by his success as a writer, it will surprise most people to know that he never thought of himself as a writer.  As the author of 23 books, and countless articles, Wade Davis sits down with host Richard Wiese on the Explorers podcast to tell us about where he came from and what he's passionate about.  Wade Davis grew up in Canada, and that's where he lives today. He made many alternative choices that others might not have but felt he didn't get much direction from his parents when he was young.  Later in life, on the other hand, his dad told him that there's good and evil and that he needed to take his side and get on with it.  That's pretty sage advice.  In the discussion about intentions, Wade tells us that you must own your choices to become the architect of your own life!  He considers his role as an “elder,” encouraging us to appreciate the younger people coming behind us. They are essential and should be acknowledged, according to Wade.   The empathy and love for people he brings to his work have played a huge part in his success. It's our 200th episode and we had planned to release an episode with an awesome DJ, but we don't feel right about a ‘business as usual' approach right now. The world is still in the grips of the COVID pandemic and now America is on fire due to yet another murder of a black man by a police officer. Mr. George Floyd was murdered on May 25, 2020. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all who love him and are mourning his loss. Protests are taking place in all 50 states and half of those states still have some shelter in place mandates. We asked ourselves, how we could be supportive and IF we should release new episodes about weddings while all of this is going on. We decided this week to use our platform to share perspectives and truths from two black women we have connected with through the podcast to share their thoughts with us and with you and they were extremely gracious to lend us some of their time and energy.
