Quinn Ewers and the Texas Longhorns fall 27-20 to Michael Penix Jr. and the Washington Huskies in the 30th anniversary of the Valero Alamo Bowl. In their first game without Bijan Robinson since 2019, the Texas Longhorns failed to run the ball effectively, and Quinn Ewers (who showed flashes of the superstar coming out of Southlake Carroll) couldn't do enough to lead the Longhorns to victory. Xavier Worthy who has gone from fan favorite to the doghouse, had a catastrophic drop that may have cost the Longhorns the game, and overall this Texas team was just outplayed by a tough Washington team that very well could have competed for a college football playoff spot. On the defensive side, a Texas defense led by Jaylan Ford that was stout against the run allowed Wayne Taulapapa to have one of the best games of his career. They allowed this Washington offense to convert on 57 percent of their third and fourth down conversions, while holding Michael Penix Jr. below his standard offensively. Improving on 5-7 was pretty much a lock based on the talent level on this Texas football team, and Steve Sarkisian being in his second year as the head coach. But 8-5 signifies that a lot of meat was left on the bone. Texas had a chance to beat Alabama, TCU, and Washington and somehow lost all of those games. Texas had a14 point lead against Oklahoma State and Texas Tech and somehow lost both of those games. Even though the offseason ended in a sad manner, we end the show with some Kool-Aid because of course. As we sit 9 days away from the Texas Football season, there are still a lot of questions to be answered. About this football team is a given, but also we have some key questions about key personnel and members of the coaching staff at the University of Texas. One of those key questions ... what are the expectations for Steve Sarkisian heading into his second season as the head coach at the 40 acres. John Garcia Jr., Director of Football Recruiting at Sports Illustrated and curator of the SI99, joins the show to discuss what we need to see as a collective in 2022 from Steve Sarkisian. We also talk about the Red River Rivalry being the biggest matchup on the schedule for the Longhorns and what the first iteration of Sarkisian and Venables of the Oklahoma Sooners should look like this season. Next we talk about the quarterback who Steve Sarkisian has attached his success too, Quinn Ewers. Everything we're saying about Quinn Ewers at this point is projection, because we have not seen him throw a meaningful pass since he was at Southlake Carroll. What will everyone be saying about the talented gunslinger at the conclusion of this season? In addition to that, we talk about newcomers that should have a huge impact on the 40 this season like Kelvin Banks, Cole Hutson, Savion Red, Ethan Burke, JT Sanders, Jahleel Billingsley and more. The expectations range for this Texas Football team. I have seen people say this will be a 4-8 football team (yes, i know) and I've also seen people say this football team will be 11-1 (yes, I know). I'm somewhere in the middle (kinda) with my projection being 9-3 but i guess i could live with 8-4. Either way, if the eyes of Texas are upon you, then the eyes of the world are on the university of Texas. The University of Texas is one of the biggest brands in the world and naturally that comes with a lot of love but even more hate. We've seen that this offseason with two future signal callers at the 40 acres receiving an insane amount of hate. Let's start with Arch Manning, the nephew of Eli and Peyton Manning, and grandson of Archie Manning, who has received an unnecessary amount of hate since his decision to commit to Steve Sarkisian and the University of Texas on July 23rd. People have criticized his 5 star rating, his level of competition at Isidore Newman, and the fact that other quarterbacks in his class might be better. We dispel those ridiculous claims. Next we discuss Quinn Ewers, the transfer from Ohio State who is ready to set the world on fire at Texas. People have skepticism about whether he will succeed at Texas, yet did not have that same energy for Caleb Williams who was rated lower than him. People have also criticized his decision to skip his senior year at Southlake Carroll to go to Ohio State and compete with CJ Stroud. Last but not least, we talk about Steve Sarkisian, his emphasis in the trenches, and his ability to recruit at an elite level. I believe in Sark leading Texas back to the promise land.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!LinkedInLinkedIn jobs helps you find the candidates you want to talk to, faster. Dan Hunt is no stranger to the professional sports industry. His father, Lamar Hunt, was key to the establishment of professional sports in the U.S. He founded professional leagues and owned many teams – notably the Kansas City Chiefs (NFL) and FC Dallas (MLS). Dan inherited his father's passion, working with him to make Toyota Stadium a reality and Frisco, TX a premier destination for both professional and youth soccer. In 2018, the National Soccer Hall of Fame opened in connection with Toyota Stadium, honoring the history of soccer but unmistakably focused on the future. If Hunt has his way, part of that future will include hosting 2026 World Cup tournament games in that stadium here in DFW. He's part of a bid committee made up of elected officials, business leaders, and sports franchise executives lobbying FIFA for North Texas to host as many as six matches of the 2026 World Cup – including the final. Seventeen other cities are also contending for the ten or eleven North American locations to be chosen. Cementing hope that DFW might be a top contender, tournament delegates recently toured the city of Fort Worth, AT&T Stadium, Fair Park, and the National Soccer Hall of Fame in Frisco. Why would this be so significant? The World Cup is the world's most celebrated tournament; the final match would put North Texas on the world's stage and mean hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue. Be a part of this conversation with Hunt, discussing the bid, why he believes North Texas is the best location, and what all to expect should DFW be selected. Moderated by Gina Miller. In this week's interview edition of The Flagship Podcast, we talk to former Texas quarterback and high school coaching legend Todd Dodge, fresh from his retirement after winning three straight state titles and 40 straight games to finish his career at Westlake. Dodge was named the national high school coach of the year for 2021 after Westlake took down Denton Guyer for the 6A Division II state title - Dodge's seventh state title as a coach. We talk to Dodge about where it all began for him - in Port Arthur as the son of a Methodist minister and a teacher and how "moving every four years" benefited Dodge later in life. Dodge talks about becoming the first high school quarterback in Texas to throw for more than 3,000 yards in a season at Port Arthur Jefferson and how a state title game against the Permian Panthers haunted him for about 30 years. At Texas from 1982-85, Dodge, who went 19-4 as a starting quarterback, talks about the one that got away - against Georgia - in 1984 and what it was like to be booed by 80,000 at DKR in pre-game warmups and then be cheered by the same 80,000 later in the game. Dodge talks about his time at Southlake Carroll, where he won four state titles in five seasons (from 2002-06), going 79-1 during that span with the only loss a 16-15 defeat by Katy in the 2003 state title game. But the highlight of his time at Southlake Carroll was coaching his 2006 team to a state title with his son, Riley, at quarterback. Riley Dodge, now the head coach at Southlake Carroll, faced off against his dad and Austin Westlake for the state title in 2020, the last game now-Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers started before deciding to graduate high school early and enroll at Ohio State in 2021. Dodge talks about Ewers and how Texas fans will need to be patient, because "it's never ideal to start a first-year quarterback." Dodge discusses his special bond with Sam Ehlinger and Texas 2022 signee offensive lineman Conner Robertson of Westlake and why guys like Robertson are the kind of guys the Longhorns need to get back to being on top. Dodge talks about what it would take for him to get back into coaching and so much more in a must-listen interview episode on The Flagship Podcast. Learn more about your ad choices. Cam Bryan, Trustee on the Carroll ISD School Board, talks with Lynn Davenport to share their approach to school board policy that reflects the will of the community. Out of 21,000 registered voters in Southlake, an unheard of 45% came out to vote. Debates, interviews, and meet-and-greets were all part of the strategy used to get the attention and ears of the community. School boards set policy and determine the property tax rate, but people really don't know what they do, or that they control 85% of the property tax rate. Back in 2018, a video of a youth singing along to a song with a racial slur went viral, and that resulted in a60 member District Diversity Council (DDC) that came up with ways to eliminate racism on the campuses. The DDC made 340 changes to the student code of conduct which included CRT-like elements such as punishment for 'micro-aggressions' and a Cultural Compentence Action Plan (CCAP), outlined in this podcast. Under this plan, among other things stipulations, teachers would be graded on how 'culturally competent' they are, shifting attention away from reading and writing skills. The new Southlake-Carroll board is determined to lower the tax rate, balance the budget, and bring reasonable academic expectations back to our K-12 experience - and in fact, are already working through the details of successful implementation. Transparency and accountability includes bringing citizens onto the committees being created, to directly reflect the community, rather than the fragmented approach that is so discouraging for the public at large. This is not a partisan issue. The Southlake-Carroll School District is making their successful blueprint available for any school district that wants to take the reigns back for their districts, too. Social Impact Podcast is on Spotify!
