Season 3 Episode 15:  Pretense Everyone knows all of the Starfleet Captains are also the winning-est of lawyers, but did you know MacGyver can get a friend off (basically) death row with just two matchsticks, a hardened wad of chewing gum, and a single archaeologist? Well he can and he did. The other team had a pretty stupid argument though, so maybe it was an own goal. Also they tried to blow up all of the judges and the judges' whole planet, so. . . . . ----more---- 00:00 - Intro 6:37 - 24 Seconds 8:58 - Episode Debrief 1:11:26 - Were We Comforted 1:13:42 - Yeh Neh or Meh 1:17:58 - Next Episode 1:20:13 - ComeTrya 1:21:41 - Get to know Your Hosts

Star Trek: Discovery, Series 1, Episode 12. First broadcast on Sunday, 21 January 2018. This week, the crew of Discovery find themselves trapped in the Mirror Universe with nothing much to do except to incrementally advance their individual plot threads. Paul chats to himself and his dead partner, Saru tries to persuade Voq's girlfriend to help him through an identity crisis, Michael partakes of an extremely upsetting hors d'œuvre, and Lord Ealing goes off somewhere in search of a mop and bucket. Fortunately, Cousin Michelle — Her Most Imperial Majesty, Mother of the Fatherland, Overlord of Vulcan, Dominus of Qo'noS, Regina Andor, Philippa Georgiou Augustus Iaponius Centaurius — is being absolutely as fabulous as she sounds, while Gabriel Lorca becomes the first Starfleet Captain to defibrillate some poor bastard's head before stomping it into a soft paste. Nathan — if no one else — loves it.

First up, the race is on to save a stranded Starfleet Captain who the "Defiant" has made radio contact with in "The Sound of Her Voice". After that, the charge to invade Cardassian space is on, but the Federation will be up against automated turrets and a Pah Wraith in "Tears of the Prophets"! And after that, it's our season 6 wrap! It is time to meet the greatest Starfleet Captain ever, Edward Jellico, who unlocks the full potential of the Enterprise by... going from 3 shifts a day to 4? How many people does it take to crew a starship exactly, and who is Steve on Comms? Deep down, the HR person inside of us is all proud. This is also the pair of episodes where we get to see Sir Patrick Stewart's Full Moon illuminated by four, maybe five, lights. Follow us on Twitter and Instagram!

The Beige and The Bold

I know it's a classic, but can we agree that this TNG run has revealed a few hidden gems and a bit too much fool's gold? Look, is old Picard too impulsive or not impulsive enough? Is he altering his character or just a few actions that young Picard is going to retroactively justify? Given that Picard straight up chooses to DIE rather than not be a Starfleet Captain, what's up with later episodes pretending that he might have become an archaeologist? I feel like if our lesson is clear then that's fine, but I don't see any message here about coming terms with your past action that isn't just a status quo bias. "You're comfortable in the world your flaws made, so isn't it better to live in this world built on your sin because it's easier?" It sounds insane! I think Derek nails it; learn from your past, but don't regret or idealize it. Most importantly: Did he or did he not crack a yo-mama joke to a Nausican? The Beige and The Bold is hosted on Anchor and is available on most podcasting platforms. New episodes are posted on Sunday nights at 9:00 PM CST.

AND CQ: Will you be getting your hands on the D’Quarka?... the new T6 D’Kora Update. TREK IT OUT by Elio LLeo DS9 & Voyager get a Hi-Def Treatment When Star Trek The Original Series and The Next Generation were given the hi-def treatment --- breathing new life into both series in stunning high-definition -- it didn’t take long for fans to start asking… when are we getting DS9 and Voyager?! Unfortunately, that wish might never be granted --- at least not according to Robert Meyer Burnett -- the writer, director, producer and editor of the bonus features included with The Next Generation and Enterprise Blu-ray releases. You see, back in 2017, Burnett went on record to explain that remastering these series is expensive and time consuming -- but, mostly expensive… and the return on investment wouldn’t be the same as with the other - more popular - series. However, a couple of fans took it upon themselves to apply some machine learning and digitally enhance several scenes from DS9 and Voyager into 4K Resolution. Last year, a fan that goes by CaptRobau uploaded a couple of comparison videos with scenes from DS9. Now, Billy Reichard ran a similar process to a couple of scenes from Voyager. Although Chabon and Goldsman have explained that ideas are starting to formulate, Sir PatStew can tell you what it won’t be about… Pandemics. Now - although Sir Patrick has gone on record explaining his goals for Season 1 of Picard and how contemporary issues affected the themes of the first season -- he doesn’t believe tackling a pandemic storyline would be appropriate explaining “This is a disturbing and frightening and sad time for many thousands of people… It is too sensitive, too upsetting, too frightening, I think.” Russo & Hawley While we’re on the topic of future productions, Star Trek Picard’s composer - Jeff Russo - chatted with flickeringmyth.com to talk about his involvement with the Star Trek Franchise…. Including his connection to Noah Hawley --- who is supposed to take the director’s chair on the next Star Trek Film. The question --- has Russo spoken to Halwey about the next film. His reply “I have! We have spoken about it, and we’ve talked what he is going to want from a musical perspective, and how to approach it, and what the story is looking like it’s going to be, which is extremely exciting to me… He’s one to definitely talk about music with me, so when he called to say that his film was in the works, I was extremely excited.” Roddenberry Impact Awards Calling all Television Content creators! AND CQ: With the new changes to the Event Campaign for another T6 ship will you be playing daily to get your progression or do you plan on buying out any of the individual events? TREK IT OUT by Shane Hoover Star Trek Picard Movie & TV Collection on Blu Ray If your ideal Starfleet Captain is principled, intelligent, diplomatic, tough, inspiring… in a word, Picard, then it's a great time to be a Trekkie! Just in time to prepare yourself for the forthcoming Picard series, CBS Home Entertainment has released a six disc Blu Ray set dedicated to the great Captain himself.   Titled the “Star Trek Picard Movie & TV Collection”, the set includes all four Star Trek: The Next Generation movies (Generations, First Contact, Insurrection and Nemesis) as well as special editions of two-part episodes “The Best of Both Worlds” and “Chain of Command”.  These specially reconfigured episodes have been edited to play both parts seamlessly, like a single film.  The new Blu Ray set also includes over 10 hours of previously released special features, like behind-the-scenes interviews and featurettes, gag reels, deleted scenes, and more. And to cap off the set, IDW Publishing, the home of official Star Trek comics, has created an exclusive 16-page comic book titled “Star Trek: Sky's The Limit”. Several sample pages of the issue are previewed on StarTrek.com. In the preview, we pick up with a scene of the Enterprise-D crew reminiscent of where “All Good Things” left them - playing poker with Captain Picard. Just as Riker applies the pressure to Picard, calling his bluff, the game is interrupted by a priority Starfleet communication. The Enterprise must respond to a Maquis hostage situation on Akavan 3. Sir Patrick Stewart Beaming Into Destination Star Trek And if you're an international Star Trek fan who watched, maybe a little enviously, while we brought you our New York Comic Con and PaleyFest coverage of Star Trek Picard, then hold your breath no longer and book your trip to Destination Star Trek in Birmingham, England.   The Captain himself, Sir Patrick Stewart, has been confirmed as a special guest appearing on Saturday, October 26th to talk about the new show. Tickets to his appearance in the main theater are available through the event website, linked in our show notes.  Each ticket also includes a limited edition DST “Star Trek: Picard” poster. UK's Channel 4 Buys Into Star Trek: Discovery In other news of interest to our U.K. listeners, British TV network Channel 4 has purchased the rights to stream Star Trek: Discovery on their E4 digital channel, along with the comedy “Man With a Plan” starring Matt LeBlanc.  According to CBS Studios International president of sales, Barry Chamberlain, “Channel 4 is already a licensee for several of our top-rated franchises, including ‘The Good Fight' and ‘Charmed', and we are confident they will have continued success with ‘Star Trek: Discovery' and ‘Man With a Plan'.” Galaxy Quest Documentary Coming to Theaters If I asked you, “What's the funniest Star Trek movie, what would be your answer?” Obviously, the only right answer is the 1999 classic “Galaxy Quest”! We're coming up on the film's 20th anniversary, and Fathom Events have announced a One-Day-Only special event “Never Surrender: A Galaxy Quest Documentary”.  The documentary, which will screen on November 26th in select theaters, explores how the movie has become a cult classic and fan favorite.   The film features interviews with almost the entire cast, including Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, and Sam Rockwell, as well as appearances by Wil Wheaton and Brent Spiner and other celebrities. Sadly, of course, Alan Rickman passed away before he could be interviewed, but his cast mates share their touching recollections of working with him. Roth Cornet, a producer, says “If you love Alan Rickman, that's the moment for me, when we talk about Alan passing. I got choked up.” Of the documentary and the film itself, Cornet also says “Something like this highlights [that] when people love something and they come together, it can really, really, really have a huge impact on their whole life, even just a little movie about a TV show. And we're making a documentary about a movie about a TV show.” Star Trek Online and Gaming News by Anthony Cox U.S.S. Franklin from Star Trek Beyond The Kelvin Universe continues its invasion of Star Trek Online with the newest Tier 6 ship being that of the U.S.S. Franklin, from the third Kelvin-JJ-Lens Flare movie, Star Trek Beyond. The Freedom-class exploration frigate features a Lt. Commander Universal/Miracle Worker Bridge Officer Station and a Lt. Commander Universal/Pilot station. It can be equipped with 5 forward weapons and 5 tactical consoles. It comes with the Universal console, VHF Disruptive Transmission, which when activated blasts high frequency radio waves towards nearby foes dealing electrical damage, and will increase the ship's maneuverability. The console also passively boosts electrical damage and hull capacity. The level five starship mastery trait is Smooth Landing, when slotted activating Evasive Maneuvers will apply Brace for Impact, and activating Brace for Impact will also apply Evasive Maneuvers. You can obtain the Freedom-class frigate from the Special Requisition Choice Pack found in Research and Development packs from now until October 31st. R&D packs purchased from the Ceeeee-store will grant either 10 Lobi crystals or the Tier 6 Promotion Ship Choice pack. You can choose from any of the previous ship available in the choice pack or you can fly home this brand new U.S.S. Franklin style Freedom-class frigate. For more details and stats on the ship, trek out the show notes. Defend the Kobayashi Maru to Earn another Free T6 Ship With the return of Starfleet's ultimate test, the Kobayashi Maru, captains on PC can also earn rewards towards another free Tier 6 ship from the Ceeee-store. You can now find the event details in the shiney new Events tab in the mission journal. There are a few changes to the event. First, the amount of progress needed to claim the reward has been reduced from 3,000 to 2,100. Because the overall progress is spread over several events, when you use the buyout option for a single event you will receive up to 700 progress in the Event Campaign. The actual amount will be determined based on the amount of progress you've already made in the single event and the pro-rated discount. There will still be bonus progress periods, however, expect them to be less frequent this time around. Also, the Kobayashi Maru scenario will see some changes as a Featured TFO. There is no minimum level to participate. As long as your character has completed the tutorial, chosen an allegiance for Romulan and Jem'hadar, or traveled to the present timeline for Discovery and TOS characters, they can participate in the TFO. Also, while the TFO is featured it will complete after wave 6 and the failure conditions of either all players being dead or the transport being destroyed have been removed. After its run as the featured TFO the “infinite” version of the scenario will return with the failure conditions and normal rewards. This feature TFO runs from now until November 7th. Weekly Top Tip The Gambling Device, found in the Lobi store for 30 crystals, is probably the best buff device you can get. For those of you not familiar with the Gambling Device, it's a ground item that when you activate and win, it will buff you +10% Crit Chance, +10% Crit Severity, +15 Dodge for one hour. If you lose it will give you negative buffs for one minute. Now the really great thing about the Gambling Device is that you can remove it and swap in another device without removing the buff. Now don't get too excited, this buff does not stack with Tribbles. But if you really need that Laser Dino, Hypospray, Frequency Remodulation, and Shard of Possibilities, you can swap in the Gambling Device, buff up, and then swap the good stuff back in.

AND CQ: With the new changes to the Event Campaign for another T6 ship will you be playing daily to get your progression or do you plan on buying out any of the individual events? TREK IT OUT by Shane Hoover Star Trek Picard Movie & TV Collection on Blu Ray If your ideal Starfleet Captain is principled, intelligent, diplomatic, tough, inspiring… in a word, Picard, then it’s a great time to be a Trekkie! And to cap off the set, IDW Publishing, the home of official Star Trek comics, has created an exclusive 16-page comic book titled “Star Trek: Sky’s The Limit”. Sir Patrick Stewart Beaming Into Destination Star Trek And if you’re an international Star Trek fan who watched, maybe a little enviously, while we brought you our New York Comic Con and PaleyFest coverage of Star Trek Picard, then hold your breath no longer and book your trip to Destination Star Trek in Birmingham, England.   The Captain himself, Sir Patrick Stewart, has been confirmed as a special guest appearing on Saturday, October 26th to talk about the new show. Literary Treks: A Star Trek Books and Comics Podcast

David R. George III: Original Sin. Benjamin Sisko has inhabited many roles in his life: husband, Emissary, and Starfleet Captain. But when a terrifying alien force attacks the USS Robinson and abducts 87 children, including Sisko's daughter Rebecca, his role as her father threatens to overwhelm all of the others, especially since this incident mirrors the kidnapping of Rebecca as a toddler six years earlier. Can he remain objective through this crisis and see it to a peaceful end, or will the possibility of the loss of his daughter spell doom for the mission? In this episode of Literary Treks, hosts Dan Gunther and Bruce Gibson are joined by author David R. George III to talk about his latest book, Deep Space Nine: Gamma: Original Sin. We discuss the two stories told in tandem, the character of Jasmine Tey, crime drama as Star Trek story, the nature of Rebecca Sisko, a completely alien encounter, the possibility of a Gamma series going forward, and where to follow David R. George III online. In the news segment, we invite Amy Nelson of Earl Grey and The Edge back on the show to discuss issue number four of the Mirror Broken comic series from IDW. Standard Orbit: A Star Trek Original Series Podcast

Voyaging Home. In this episode of Standard Orbit, your Refit Crew continues their voyages through the Original Series Cast Movies with Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, as they head towards July 22 and BEYOND! After the dramatic gravitas of The Wrath of Khan and The Search for Spock, there is a very obvious and light-hearted approach towards this movie as Leonard Nimoy wanted to take this in another direction. It wound up being the most successful of the Original Series cast movies at the time in 1986. And it was no secret that the return of Nicholas Meyer had a profoundly positive impact as well. One of the strongest aspects to The Voyage Home was the story itself as the writing contributions of Harve Bennett and Nicolas Myer added to the overall partnership with Nimoy at the helm. Most of the cast got their "moment" in the movie and we discuss several of our favorite. We also discuss several Star Trek firsts in this film: we saw the first female Starfleet Captain, Christine Chapel in the background in charge of Starfleet Medical and, in our opinion, a story where the team is actually trying to make an impact to the timeline instead of restoring a timeline. The Captains on the series Enterprise not named Jonathan Archer. On Warp Five, we often talk about the important role that Jonathan Archer had as Captain of the NX-01. Since he was the first Starfleet Captain for the first Warp Five capable ship, he didn't have the luxury of Captain's Logs or the precedents laid by the commanders before him. While it's true that Archer often had to rely on his own training and instincts, it is also true that he wasn't completely without contemporaries. Even though he was Captain of the Enterprise, he still had colleagues and friends in command of other ships and areas within Starfleet.   In this episode, we're going to take a closer look at the other Captains seen on the series Enterprise...not named Jonathan Archer; more specifically A.G. Robinson and Erika Hernandez (and even Captain Gardner to a smaller degree). What can their experiences tell us about Starfleet in the 22nd century? Would Captain Hernandez's role have been expanded if the series had continued beyond Season 4? Or...how would circumstances have been different if Robinson or Hernandez were given command of the NX-01 instead of Archer? Captain Jonathan Archer...Into Darkness.   In the beginning, Archer was a Starfleet Captain namely in rank, but not a Starfleet Captain of any measurable EXPERIENCE. It is fair to say that he was unprepared for deep space, but is this merely a valid criticism or in fact a sheer truism? Think about the validity of that specific critique and ask yourself, “How does one truly prepare for the unknown vastness of uncharted space? How CAN one prepare for the unimaginable - as experienced by the Xindi attack on Earth? That is simply and logically a true and undeniable IMPOSSIBILITY.   Every Starship Captain that succeeded Archer all owe something, even in the smallest of ways, to the flawed and at times tragically tarnished career that Archer had to endure in order for humanity to survive - specifically against the Xindi; the mission that changed him forever. In the final analysis, Archer's vision of an even greater future for all sentient beings was built upon a career rife with personal and professional sacrifices and regret. In the end, his crucible was the catalyst for a Coalition of Planets that would change everything.   Host Norman C. Captain Jonathan Archer: The Untested Optimist.   Jonathan Archer was far from being the quintessential Starfleet Captain, which made his overall character growth across four seasons of Enterprise one of the most interesting character journeys in Star Trek. His command was wrought with trial and error, and his humanity and moral center usually set him at odds with certain aspects of the mission and Starfleet diplomacy. However, in the end, it was that same humanity that became the catalyst for unifying the founding members of the Coalition of Planets and ultimately The Federation.   Pride, arrogance and uncertainty are not traits that one usually associates with a Starfleet Captain. Unfortunately these personal flaws influence Archer's early decisions to prove his quality and illustrate his internal struggle between morality and duty as he experiences the perils of deep space exploration firsthand. Norman C. Lao and his guests in the Decon Chamber have chosen very specific episodes from Enterprise Seasons One and Two that illustrate the nearly insurmountable expectations placed on Archer at the very beginning stages of his career.   Host Norman C. Lao   Guests Will Nguyen and Tommy Kraft   Editor Matthew Rushing   Associate Producers Norman C.
