This Labor Day, we take a look at writing labor history with Steve Watkins, author of The Mine Wars: The Bloody Fight for Workers' Rights in the West Virginia Coalfields, a riveting true story of the West Virginia coal miners who ignited the largest labor uprising in American history. Watkins is joined by labor historian Rosemary Feurer. This conversation originally took place May 19, 2024 and was recorded live at the American Writers Festival.AWM PODCAST NETWORK HOMEAbout The Mine Wars:In May of 1920, in a small town in the mountains of West Virginia, a dozen coal miners took a stand. They were sick of the low pay in the mines. The unsafe conditions. The brutal treatment they endured from mine owners and operators. The scrip they were paid-instead of cash-that could only be used at the company store. They had tried to unionize, but the mine owners dug in. On that fateful day in May 1920, tensions boiled over and a gunfight erupted-beginning a yearlong standoff between workers and owners. The miners pleaded, then protested, then went on strike; the owners retaliated with spying, bribery, and threats. Violence escalated on both sides, culminating in the 1921 Battle of Blair Mountain, the largest labor uprising in United States history. In this gripping narrative nonfiction book, meet the resolute and spirited people who fought for the rights of coal miners, and discover how the West Virginia Mine Wars paved the way for vital worker protections nationwide. More than a century later, this overlooked story of the labor movement remains urgently relevant.STEVE WATKINS is an award-winning author of twelve books for young readers, including Down Sand Mountain, which won the 2009 Golden Kite Award for young adult fiction. He also writes books for grown-ups, and won a Pushcart Prize for one of the stories in his collection My Chaos Theory. He is co-editor of the online ideas and features magazine Pie & Chai, a former English professor at the University of Mary Washington, a longtime yoga instructor, and father of four daughters. He and his family live in Fredericksburg, VA.ROSEMARY FEURER'S research and teaching interests focus on understanding the political economy of social conflict. She focuses on labor movements and conflict within the context of U.S. capitalist development spatially, socially and economically during the late nineteenth and twentieth century. Her new work follows the story that made for violent conflict in Illinois and also helped to make it the strongest unionized state in the nation, tentatively entitled The Illinois Mine Wars, 1860-1930. It covers the epic conflicts that helped to define Illinois as one of the strongest labor states in the nation. She is also working on a new biography of Mother Jones, the renowned labor activist and agitator of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era. She has always connected her research to public history projects, including tours, electronic media, oral history and video production. Feurer is the author of Against Labor: How U.S. Employers Organized to Defeat Union Activism and Radical Unionism in the Midwest, 1900-1950.

Do you have what it takes to be a Saskatchewan RCMP officer? Proactive recruiter for the Saskatchewan RCMP, Steve Watkins, stops by to talk about his love of Sask, swap policing stories and answer questions about what it takes to become an RCMP member.
Steve picked the Outer Wilds to play through this month and we break down what we love and sometimes hate about each planet in this micro solar system. We talk about the joy of discovering something new and being able to just share that joy with someone else. We also talk deeply about what it means to travel to new and unexpected places, even though it might be scary, and why we feel the urge to keep going despite that. We also laugh a lot over the many ways to die in Outer Wilds - being crushed by a giant sand waterfall, having the autopilot fly us straight into the sun, or just forgetting to put on our space suits when exiting the ship, it's all here and we loved doing it over and over again in the name of discovery.
Hosts Andy and Tom are joined by Business Courier reporters Brian Planalp, Abby Miller and Steve Watkins to dissect some of the biggest local news stories of 2023. Those include a record number of restaurants closing in Cincinnati – more than when Covid-19 broke out in 2020 – as well as an unassuming local millionaire leaving $270 million to local organizations; Cincinnati gaining a new Fortune 500 company; what's going on with downtown real estate as companies figure out what to do about remote and hybrid work and their physical office space; and the Western & Southern Open selecting Cincinnati as its permanent home following a $400 million bid by Charlotte, N.C., to lure the tournament there.Above the Fold will go on hiatus after Dec. 25, 2023.Above the Fold is a podcast by the Cincinnati Business Courier.

In this episode, I begin a series of conversations with my best friend, Steve Watkins, about pursuing happiness, wholeness, and healing. We mentioned a few books in this episode: Yuval Noah Harari, Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind (Harper, 2015), and Pema Chödrön, Comfortable with Uncertainty: 108 Teachings on Cultivating Fearlessness and Compassion (Shambhala, 2018). We also mentioned the beautiful TED Talk by Anne Lamott, called "12 Truths I Learned from Life and Writing."
As a teenager working in his family's fields during the Farm Crisis of the 80's, any job out of the sun with a steady paycheck sounded like a better option to Steve Watkins. After working in journalism, publishing, and a variety of other fields, Steve found himself back at the start. A forty day walk down the Camino de Santiago gave him time to think and pray. After returning he wrote Pilgrim Strong: Rewriting My Story on the Way of St. James. Steve has also written a book about growing up on the farm and his return to rural life. That book is called The King of Highbanks Road: Rediscovering Dad, Rural America, and Learning to Love Home Again. Both of Steve's books can be found on Amazon or other booksellers. You can find out more about Steve, his books, and his lodges on Reelfoot Lake in Tennessee at these sites:Steve-Watkins.comReelfootSportsmanLodge.com You can also reach Steve via email at steve@steve-watkins.com. On this very special episode Steve Watkins and Sarah Amini call in to talk about the riveting game Brothers from the mind of Josef Fares. We talk about every step of the journey that the brothers Naia & Naiee take and what it all means to us. Note that there is a constant annoying clicking sound that I couldn't remove.
Steve Watkins has spent time as a journalist, capitol hill press secretary, rancher, publisher, marketer, author of two award-winning books and is an excellent chef of “down-home cooking.” His work has garnered him a reputation as a champion of authentic Southern culture. Steve and his wife Dana have recently moved into the Discovery Park neighborhood, making their home on Reelfoot Lake in Samburg, Tenn. There, he's building a hunter's lodge and planning a weekend retreat for writers Sept. 21-24, 2023. In this episode, Steve shares how a letter from Jimmy Carter he received as a child started him down the path as a writer, his philosophy for handling life when times get hard and where he finds the inspiration to continue to try new things that make a difference in the lives of those he encounters. Welcome to Louisville, Kentucky! We are here to run a race that supports the Navy Seals Foundation and attend the Bourbon and Beyond Festival! RUN In this episode, we run the Joggin for Frogmen 5K to benefit the Navy Seals Foundation on Saturday. It was at South Oldham High School in Crestwood, not too far outside Louisville. The weather was awesome and the course was almost entirely on the high school campus. It was mainly flat and it is an inexpensive race that everyone can run or walk and feel inspired knowing they are supporting a great cause. We talk to the media manager for the event, Steve Watkins, who is also a former Navy Seal, and he tells us about the foundation and what it does for families of Navy Seals as well as Navy Seals themselves. EAT We got to the Bourbon and Beyond Festival on the first day with a plan to research and prepare to film our food segments on the second day of the festival. We saw lots of local eats and we talked to several people at many booths. We were exited. I can tell you Island Noodles were tasty... we wish we had filmed some segments on Saturday. DRINK We tried many cocktails as part of the Jefferson's Reserve.VIP Lounge Area. The Jefferson's Airplane was a great cocktail that was part of our VIP experience. The Old Fashioned they made us was also awesome. We wanted to bring you so many of the offerings from the local distilleries as well. We should have filmed everything we tried that day because.... THE WEATHER HAD OTHER PLANS... It started raining like cats and dogs and we took shelter as we watched great musical acts like Keb Mo' Sheryl Crow, and Lenny Kravitz. At the end of the night, we made our way to get picked up at the Uber / Lyft shared ride location. It was ankle-deep mud because of the rain and it was difficult for many to exit the park. The city declared the park unsafe and canceled day two. We understood. Safety is always the top priority. We also knew we had to change course so we could bring you some of what Louisville has to offer should you come here to run a race or visit for an awesome vacation. We decided to go on a couple of distillery tours and to a couple of restaurants, so we will bring you those in future Quick Bites. Thank you for hanging in there with us, even though plans changed in the interest of safety for everyone. THAT'S A WRAP Thank you for watching!
