The South Bend Cubs left ten men on base and, despite a strong relief appearance from Chase Watkins, dropped the series to the Beloit Sky Carp, four games to two, after a 4–3 loss on a beautiful, sun-soaked afternoon at Four Winds Field. Beloit scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to build a 3–0 lead. South Bend answered in the bottom of the fifth when Drew Bowser roped his fourth double of the year, driving in Jefferson Rojas and Carter Trice to cut the deficit to 3–2. In the bottom of the sixth, Reginald Preciado tied the game with his first home run of the season, a solo shot to center. In the top of the eighth, with Vince Riley on the mound, the Sky Carp strung together three consecutive singles to reclaim a 4–3 lead. Riley and the Cubs’ defense limited the damage, throwing out a runner at home. South Bend put two runners on in the bottom of the eighth but could not capitalize. South Bend Cubs starting pitcher Ryan Gallagher made his third professional start against the Beloit Sky Carp in a mid-afternoon game at a somewhat windy Four Winds Field. Gallagher came out sharp, retiring the first eight batters he faced consecutively before allowing an infield hit. That infield single eventually came around to score in the top of the third inning, tying the game at one apiece. The South Bend Cubs had gotten on the board early, plating a run in the bottom of the first. Jefferson Rojas led off with a single and later scored when Ariel Armas lined a base hit to left field for an RBI single off Beloit starter Jake Brooks. In the bottom of the third, the Cubs threatened again, loading the bases after Armas was hit by a pitch. Edgar Alvarez followed with a single over the infield, scoring Ivan Brethowr and Andy Garriola to give South Bend a 3–1 lead. Armas was thrown out at the plate trying to score on the same play, ending the rally. Gallagher kept the momentum going with a scoreless top of the fourth, but ran into trouble in the fifth. He gave up two runs before being replaced by reliever Joe Nahas. The Sky Carp tied the game at 3–3. In the top of the sixth, Nahas struggled early, allowing the first two batters to reach base. He then committed a balk, moving the runners to second and third with nobody out. Colby Shade doubled to right field, scoring Ryan Ignoffo and moving Yiddi Cappe to third, giving Beloit a 4–3 lead. Michael Snyder followed with a single to left field, scoring both Cappe and Shade to extend the Sky Carp lead to 6–3. After the damage, Nahas managed to get the Cubs out of the inning by inducing an inning-ending double play to stop the bleeding. In the top of the seventh, Johzan Oquendo came in to relieve Nahas. He walked the bases loaded but stood strong under pressure, managing to keep the Sky Carp from scoring any more runs and keeping the Cubs within striking distance. In the bottom of the eighth, the Cubs made a strong push, hitting two rockets, one of which was snagged in the outfield and the other stopped by a great play in the infield. The Cubs were unable to get anything going, as the Sky Carp defense held firm, preventing a rally from forming. In the top of the eighth, Cubs pitcher Sam Thoresen struck out the side, keeping the Cubs in the game. However, while warming up for the top of the ninth, something happened, forcing him to leave the game before he could pitch the inning. Marino Santy came in to relieve Thoresen but struggled, issuing a few walks. The Sky Carp capitalized, scoring a run to extend their lead to 7–3. The Cubs made a last-ditch effort in the bottom of the ninth, loading the bases with two outs. However, a ground out ended the game, and the Sky Carp secured a 7–3 victory. What an electrifying night at Four Winds Field! A near-historic evening ended in late drama as the South Bend Cubs narrowly avoided being no-hit. Beloit Sky Carp pitchers Karson Milbrandt, Alex Williams, and Ike Burton combined to carry a no-hitter into the bottom of the 9th. But leading off the inning against Beloit’s closer William Kempner, Cristian Hernandez broke up the bid with an infield single—South Bend’s first and only hit of the night. Despite the late blemish, the Sky Carp held firm, closing out a 3–0 victory behind dominant pitching and timely scoring in the 1st, 5th, and 9th innings. South Bend’s pitching was also impressive. Jaxson Wiggins got the start, going 4 innings, allowing just one unearned run and striking out 7. Evan Aschenbeck followed with 4 strong innings of relief, surrendering a single run in the 5th and striking out 3. In total, Cubs pitching tallied 12 strikeouts, making this a classic pitcher’s duel from start to finish. Fans at Four Winds Field were treated to a tension-filled game under ideal baseball conditions—mostly cloudy skies and a comfortable 73°F (23°C). Though the Cubs dodged the no-hitter, it was a night to remember. Cristian Hernandez’s clutch infield hit kept South Bend off the wrong side of history—for now. The win clinched the three-game series for the Tigers and gave them their 10th victory in their past 17 games after starting the season 27-39. The five home runs matched the team’s total from its previous four games combined and brought in all 14 runs. Kerry Carpenter, Jake Rogers and Spencer Torkelson also homered for the Tigers. Torkelson’s two-run shot to left in the seventh inning was his team-leading 12th homer of the season and his fourth in the past five games. White Sox 8, Athletics 7 – Jake Burger homers, White Sox hold off A’s 8-7 to avoid a sweep Jake Burger hit his 18th home run and the Chicago White Sox beat the Oakland Athletics 8-7 to avoid a three-game sweep. The 34-year-old Fowler got his first PGA Tour victory since winning the 2019 Waste Management Phoenix Open. WNBA – Women’s National Basketball Association Yesterday Chicago Sky 89, Indiana Fever 87 Sky 89, Fever 87 – Williams scores 28 — including winning jumper — with 8 assists as Sky beat Fever 89-87 Courtney Williams hit the go-ahead jumper with 18.1 seconds to play and finished with a season-high 28 points with eight assists to help the Chicago Sky beat the Indiana Fever 89-87. Elizabeth Williams added 17 points, nine rebounds and six assists for Chicago. Marina Mabrey also had 17 points and six assists, and Kahleah Copper scored 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting. WNBA – Sky coach James Wade steps down to take assistant spot with Toronto Raptors Chicago Sky coach and general manager James Wade is stepping down to take an assistant coaching job with the Toronto Raptors. Wade helped lead the team to its first WNBA title in 2021 and had an 81-59 record with the team since taking over as head coach in 2019. Previously, he was an assistant with the San Antonio Stars and Minnesota Lynx. The Sky announced Emre Vatansever as the interim GM and head coach. Yohendrick Pinango hit two home runs! Yohendrick Pinango robbed a home run from the Sky carp in bottom of the 7th inning. Jacob Wetzel had a super defensive play in the bottom of the 8th inning to stop a Sky Carp rally to keep the South Bend Cubs in the game. The Blackhawks gave up a seventh-round pick in next year's draft to acquire the 18-year player with the belief they can sign Perry, who is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent Saturday. NBA – James Harden picks up $35.6 million option with the 76ers, AP source says James Harden picked up his $35.6 million contract option for next season with the Philadelphia 76ers, with the franchise exploring trades to move the veteran scorer, a person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press. Harden informed the 76ers of his choice Thursday ahead of the midnight deadline to pick up the option, according to the person who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the decision was not made public. The 33-year-old Harden could have declined the option and decided to try for free agency. The Sixers had the right to offer him a $210 million, four-year deal, $8 million more overall than any other team. NBA – The already hectic NBA offseason now poised for free agents to make moves It’s already been a busy offseason for player movement in the NBA. Now free agency begins Friday evening. There are big names that could be on the move, including Khris Middleton and Draymond Green. There are some players like Max Strus who are in line for big paydays for the first time. Trades are still a possibility, especially since James Harden has picked up his player option. And teams now have to navigate new rules that come with the new Collective Bargaining Agreement that goes into effect on Saturday. NFL – NFL suspends 3 indefinitely for violating the gambling policy and a 4th gets 6 games NFL has suspended three players indefinitely for violating the league's gambling policy and a fourth was sidelined for six games. Isaiah Rodgers and Rashod Berry of the Indianapolis Colts along with free agent Demetrius Taylor received indefinite suspensions through at least this season for betting on NFL games in 2022. They won't be able to seek reinstatement until the 2023 season ends. Tennessee Titans right tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere was suspended for the first six games of the 2023 season for betting on non-NFL sports at the team's facility. He is eligible to participate in all offseason and preseason activities, including preseason games. Hockey – Deal with Dodgers co-owner unifies women’s pro hockey in North America Professional women's hockey in North America was unified Thursday when a co-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers struck a deal with the Premier Hockey Federation. That’s according to two people with direct knowledge of the agreement who spoke to The Associated Press because the deal hadn’t been announced. A third person also confirmed the partial purchase of the PHF by Mark Walter’s firm. One of the people says the deal will result in a new women’s hockey league that is projected to launch in January. The PHF will cease operations under the deal, according to one of the people. Nassar – Sexual assault laws inspired by Nassar’s abuse are signed by governor Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has signed a package of bills that will create stricter punishments for sexual assault that takes place under the guise of medical treatment. The new laws will also protect students who report it. The bills were first inspired in the wake of the Larry Nassar scandal. Students testified that they had told adults what was happening but it went unreported. The new laws will also create comprehensive training materials for people required to report suspected child abuse and neglect. Harden informed the 76ers of his choice Thursday ahead of the midnight deadline to pick up the option, according to the person who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the decision was not made public. Isaiah Rodgers and Rashod Berry of the Indianapolis Colts along with free agent Demetrius Taylor received indefinite suspensions through at least this season for betting on NFL games in 2022. They won't be able to seek reinstatement until the 2023 season ends. Tennessee Titans right tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere was suspended for the first six games of the 2023 season for betting on non-NFL sports at the team's facility. He is eligible to participate in all offseason and preseason activities, including preseason games. Hockey – Deal with Dodgers co-owner unifies women’s pro hockey in North America Professional women's hockey in North America was unified Thursday when a co-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers struck a deal with the Premier Hockey Federation. That’s according to two people with direct knowledge of the agreement who spoke to The Associated Press because the deal hadn’t been announced. A third person also confirmed the partial purchase of the PHF by Mark Walter’s firm. One of the people says the deal will result in a new women’s hockey league that is projected to launch in January. The PHF will cease operations under the deal, according to one of the people. Nassar – Sexual assault laws inspired by Nassar’s abuse are signed by governor Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has signed a package of bills that will create stricter punishments for sexual assault that takes place under the guise of medical treatment. The new laws will also protect students who report it. The bills were first inspired in the wake of the Larry Nassar scandal. Students testified that they had told adults what was happening but it went unreported. The new laws will also create comprehensive training materials for people required to report suspected child abuse and neglect. NFL – NFL finalizing discipline for several players linked to gambling violations Two people familiar with the plan say the NFL is finalizing disciplinary action against more players for gambling violations, including Indianapolis Colts defensive back Isaiah Rodgers Sr. The people spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because an official announcement won't be made until later this week. Rodgers is the only identified player of the group, identifying himself in a Twitter post as the Colts player accused of gambling earlier this month. NASCAR – NASCAR brings season to Chicago for the first street race in Cup Series history It’s a big week for NASCAR as it visits downtown Chicago for the Cup Series’ first foray into street course racing. The Xfinity Series runs the The Loop 121 on Saturday, and the Cup Series takes over for the Grant Park 220 on Sunday. It has been quite an adventure to get to this point, especially when it comes to setting up for the event in the heart of a busy city. The races are the centerpiece of a NASCAR festival that also includes music and other entertainment options. NCAAFB – Former Arkansas and Michigan QB Ryan Mallett dies in an apparent drowning Former Arkansas and Michigan quarterback Ryan Mallett, who also played for New England, Houston and Baltimore during five seasons in the NFL, has died. He was 35. Mallett died in an apparent drowning, according to the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office. Mallett was a football coach at White Hall High School in his native Arkansas, and the school district also confirmed his death in a post on its website. Arkansas athletic director Hunter Yurachek said the university “lost an incredibly special person.”  Mallett played for the University of Michigan for one season before finishing his college career at Arkansas. He passed for 7,493 yards and 62 touchdowns in two seasons with the Razorbacks.  Mallett was selected by New England in the third round of the 2011 NFL draft. He appeared in four games with the Patriots during the 2012 season, completing 1 of 4 passes for 17 yards. NCAA – NCAA rules on NLI changed New policies in the National Letter of Intent Program will eliminate athletes having to sit out a full season of competition for not complying with NLI rules under some circumstances. The binding agreement between athletes and schools has been part of recruiting since 1964. The Collegiate Commissioners Association no longer will penalize athletes who renege because of a head coaching change or for leaving his or her original school after one quarter or one semester. A release must be requested in both instances. The CCA also is allowing athletes who transfer to another four-year school to sign NLIs. Golf – PGA – PGA Tour board reminds players they’ll have vote on final deal with Saudis The PGA Tour is seeking to assure players they will have a say in the tour’s new partnership with the Saudi funders of LIV Golf. The tour’s policy board issued a statement Tuesday noting players would have to approve any final agreement between the once-rival tours. The statement was released after a meeting of the board, which includes five players: Patrick Cantlay, Rory McIlroy, Charley Hoffman, Peter Malnati and Webb Simpson. The framework agreement between the tour and the Saudis says the parties would work together to decide how defectors to LIV Golf can return and what kind of punishment they would face. NFL – History says highly touted rookie TE’s don’t always make a major impact right away This rookie class of tight ends already made quite an impact on the draft. They’ll have to buck history if they’re going to leave the same type of impression on the field this year. Tight end is one of the toughest positions for rookies to make huge contributions. Only five rookie tight ends in NFL history have caught as many as 60 passes. This year’s rookie class features nine tight ends who got drafted in the first three rounds. That’s the most since the common draft era began in 1967. That gives DeChambeau a one-shot lead over Scottie Scheffler, Dustin Johnson and Corey Conners among those who finished. Thirty players have to finish the round Friday. Eric Cole is at 5 under and has four holes to complete. Johnson was tied for the lead until making his only bogey on the final hole. Tennis – Rafael Nadal to miss French Open with hip injury, expects 2024 to be last season Rafael Nadal has pulled out of the French Open because of a lingering hip injury that has sidelined him since January and says that he expects 2024 to be his last year on the tennis tour. Nadal owns a record 14 championships at the clay-court Grand Slam tournament and will miss it for the first time since making his debut in 2005. Nadal announced his withdrawal at a news conference at his tennis academy in Manacor, Spain. The 36-year-old Nadal has a career record of 112-3 across 18 appearances at the French Open and he won the title there a year ago. He is tied with Novak Djokovic with a men’s-record 22 Grand Slam titles. Indy500 – Ericsson, Dixon keep Ganassi atop Indianapolis 500 speed chart for 2nd day Defending Indianapolis 500 winner Marcus Ericsson looked like double trouble in Indianapolis 500 practice. First he charged to the top of the speed chart with a lap of 229.607 mph. Then he posted the top no-tow speed of the day at 224.414. Scott Dixon had the second-fastest overall lap for the second straight day as Chip Ganassi Racing had the two fastest cars in practice again. Dixon went 229.186. Speeds are expected to increase Friday when extra power is added to the cars. Qualifying is set for Saturday and Sunday. The race is set for May 28. Indy500 – Kyle Larson and Hendrick crew arrive for Indianapolis 500 immersion Kyle Larson was at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Thursday to begin his immersion in the Arrow McLaren Racing program. It will help him prepare for next year’s Indianapolis 500. The NASCAR superstar was accompanied by Jeff Gordon and several Hendrick Motorsports executives. The two-year Indy 500 deal with Larson and McLaren is backed by Hendrick Motorsports. Larson will also rac in NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway the same night. Five drivers have previously tried the double. Only Tony Stewart in 2001 was able to complete all 1,100 miles in the two races. Horse Racing – Secretariat’s 1973 Triple Crown record times now official When Secretariat won the Preakness a half-century ago, his final time of 1 minute, 55 seconds wasn’t all that noteworthy. MLB – Major League Baseball Yesterday St. Louis Cardinals 12, Detroit Tigers 6 Miami Marlins 5, Chicago Cubs 4 – 14 Innings Chicago White Sox 17, Cincinnati Reds 4 Cardinals 12, Tigers 6 – Goldschmidt 3 HRs, Cards end 8-game skid, beat Tigers 12-6 Paul Goldschmidt homered three times, Brendan Donovan hit a three-run drive and the St. Louis Cardinals stopped an eight-game losing streak with a 12-6 win over the Detroit Tigers. Goldschmidt, had four hits and four RBIs. Lars Nootbaar added a two-run single to cap off a seven-run sixth inning for the Cardinals, who had been on their longest skid in 16 years. Jake Rogers hit a grand slam for the Tigers, whose five-game winning steak was stopped. Marlins 5, Cubs 4 – F/14 – Marlins stop 5-game slide with 14-inning win over Cubs Garrett Hampson scored on Adbert Alzolay’s balk in the 14th inning, and the Miami Marlins stopped a five-game slide by outlasting the Chicago Cubs for a wild 5-4 victory. Hampson opened the inning on second as the automatic runner. He advanced on Luis Arraez’s groundout and trotted home when Alzolay was called for a balk with a 2-2 count on Jesús Sánchez. Steven Okert got three outs for the win, and Andrew Nardi pitched the 14th for his first career save. White Sox 17, Reds 4 – White Sox score 11 in 2nd, beat Reds 17-4 Hanser Alberto had four hits, a career-high four RBIs and Chicago scored 11 runs in the second inning to rout the Cincinnati Reds 17-4 on Sunday. The 11 runs are the most for the team in one inning in 16 years and third-most ever for the franchise. The White Sox had 11 runs in the fifth at Kansas City on Sept. 17, 2007. Chicago, which came in batting .176 with runners in scoring position, delivered plenty of big hits against Graham Ashcraft (2-1) in the second, sending 14 batters to the plate. Michael Kopech (1-3) allowed four solo homers by pitched six innings to earn his first victory of the season. Reinhart dumped the puck off the boards behind the net to set up his game-winner, taking a pass back from Anton Lundell and scoring to give Florida its first 3-0 series lead in 27 years. Anthony Duclair and Carter Verhaeghe scored for Florida. Sam Lafferty and Erik Gustafsson scored for Toronto. Kraken 7, Stars 2 – Kraken ride 2nd period outburst, thump Stars 7-2 in Game 3 Jordan Eberle sparked a five-goal outburst in the second period with his fourth goal of the playoffs, Philipp Grubauer made 24 saves and the Seattle Kraken beat the Dallas Stars 7-2 to take a 2-1 series lead in their Western Conference semifinal. Eberle’s goal was just the start for Seattle. Alex Wennberg doubled the lead 1:26 after Eberle’s goal; Carson Soucy became Seattle’s 16th different goal scorer this postseason, beating Oettinger five-hole at 6:30; and Matty Beniers made it 4-0 at 8:22. Marcus Smart’s potential winner was a tick too late and the Celtics now head home for Tuesday’s Game 5. Joel Embiid had 34 points and 13 rebounds. Harden added nine assists and eight rebounds. Jayson Tatum struggled to score early but finished with 24 points, 18 rebounds, six assists and four blocks. Suns 129, Nuggets 124 – Booker, Durant both score 36, Suns even series with Nuggets Devin Booker had 36 points and 12 assists, Kevin Durant also had 36 points and the Phoenix Suns beat the Denver Nuggets 129-124 to even their Western Conference semifinal playoff series at two games apiece. Backup guard Landry Shamet made four crucial 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to keep the Suns ahead. Denver lost despite a huge game from MVP runner-up Nikola Jokic, who poured in 53 points. The Suns took a 98-92 lead into the fourth quarter after a scoring flurry from Booker, who had 17 points in the third. Phoenix wouldn’t trail in the fourth. The series returns to Denver for Game 5 on Tuesday. Then he signed his sneakers and gave them to Hao after scoring 42 points and making the winning shot in overtime. The 20-year-old Hao was paralyzed from the chest down in a February shooting on the East Lansing campus that killed three students and injured five others. Harden learned Hao was a fan of his and the two struck up a friendship over FaceTime. Harden also donated sneakers and money toward Hao’s recovery. Hao recently left a Chicago rehabilitation facility and said he may move with his family back to China. NBA – Nick Gilbert, son of Cavaliers owner, dies at 26 Nicolas “Nick” Gilbert, the son of Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert who became the team’s good luck charm at NBA draft lotteries, has died. He was 26. A funeral announcement posted by the Ira Kaufman Chapel said Gilbert died Saturday “peacefully at home surrounded by family.” Gilbert was diagnosed as a child with neurofibromatosis (NF1), a genetic condition that causes tumors to grow in the brain, spinal cord and skin. Wearing a signature bow tie and dark-rimmed glasses, Gilbert became a sensation at the 2011 draft lottery. NBA – Analysis: Wemby’s farewell tour will be a French celebration Victor Wembanyama’s first basket on Sunday night looked so easy. He deflected a pass, ran it down, dribbled twice and dunked the ball with his left hand. And 15,000 people roared. He’s called a generational talent, though really, there’s never been one in France quite like Wembanyama. The 7-foot-3, 19-year-old, soon-to-be No. 1 pick in the NBA draft is on his farewell tour of his homeland, playing his final pro games there before he comes to North America and accepts the challenge of trying to truly become the game’s next superstar. Golf – PGA – Clark holds off Schauffele for first PGA win at Wells Fargo Wyndham Clark shot 68 on Sunday for a four-shot victory over Xander Schauffele at the Wells Fargo Championship to earn his first career win on the PGA Tour. Clark finished the tournament at 19-under 265, the second-lowest score in relation to par in tournament history behind only three-time champion Rory McIlroy’s 21-under 267 in 2015 when par for the course was 72. Clark struggled to hold back tears as he sank a bogey putt on the 18th hole to seal the win. Schauffele has accuracy issues with his driver on Sunday and shot 70, finishing at 15 under. Tyrrell Hatton and Harry English finished tied for third at 12 under, one shot better than Tommy Fleetwood and Adam Scott. Defending champion Max Homa shot 70 on Sunday and finished tied for ninth at 9-under 275.
