Sam Bloom is a four-time para surfing world champion. But it was with the help of a magpie named penguin that she found her way there. Growing up by the beach, Sam always had a strong connection with the ocean. But after an accident left her paralysed and in a dark place, it was Sam's companion Penguin that helped reignite that love for the water. So much so, that she won two Australian Para-canoeing titles, and represented Australia at the Para-Canoeing World Championships. But she eventually found her way back to the Ocean, winning gold at the World Para-Surfing Championships, not once but four times, including most recently this year. This chat shows that sometimes you have to dig really deep to find your inner strength, but sometimes a feathered friend can help along the way. I am so excited about this week's guest having followed her story (and had her on our ultimate wish list) for many years now. Some of you may already know her, but if not, Sam Bloom is a world champion surfer, adventure traveller, best-selling author, neurology nurse and mother of three boys whose story also became a global hit movie, Penguin Bloom. That heartbreaking story begins in 2013 when Sam was paralysed in a terrifying accident in Thailand when she fell through a rotting balcony and it was the unlikely arrival of a beautiful magpie chick, Penguin, that helped her gruelling recovery back in Australia. The photos captured by her photographer husband, Cameron, were later made into a book written alongside legendary author Bradley Trevor Grieve and then became the basis of Penguin Bloom starring Naomi Watts. Having pored over Penguin Bloom many times, it was surreal to be able to hear Sam chat so candidly about grief and redefining joy in real time – she is so refreshingly honest about the defining trauma in her life and that the challenges endure everyday. But what I also loved was having the chance to also ask Sam about all the other parts of her life that perhaps don't relate so much to the story many know her for. I could go on forever but I'll let Sam tell you the rest herself – this is one of my favourite chats to date and I am so grateful for her time. I hope you enjoy as much as I did! If you don't know Sam Bloom for her sporting feats – she's won two golds and one bronze at the World Para Surfing Championships and represented Australia in paracanoeing – then you might know her as the inspiration for the global hit movie Penguin Bloom. In 2013, Sam's life changed dramatically when, while on holiday in Thailand, she leaned against a rotten balcony railing. As it fell away so did Sam, plummeting six metres onto the concrete below. The accident left her paralysed from the chest down.Coming to terms with her new reality, Sam fell into a depression, grieving an old life and sense of self. Then, the unlikely arrival of an injured baby magpie – who the family called Penguin – helped her recover.A lot has happened since we last spoke to Sam in 2019, but she continues to defy barriers in life and sport, inspiring people around the world to do the same. In this chat with our executive editor Kara Byers, Sam talks about what sport means to her, chasing a third title and what it was like to have her life given the Hollywood treatment. In this episode we discuss suicidal thoughts. If you are struggling or having suicidal thoughts or worried about someone you know, please call 000 or Lifeline on 13 11 14.CREDITS:This podcast was hosted by WH executive editor Kara Byers and produced by WH editor-in-chief Lizza Gebilagin, with additional sound editing by Abby Williams. For more from Women's Health Australia, find us on Instagram @womenshealthaus, womenshealth.com.au or find the print and digital editions of the magazine. Type 2 is a podcast from Looking Sideways in association with Patagonia that explores the intersection between the outdoors, action sports and activism. This week's guest is Sean Doherty - a journalist, writer, editor and activist who has been one of the key voices in the Australian surf industry for the last twenty years. In a way the path of Sean's own career reflects the shift that has occurred in the industry in the period since since the early 2000s glory years, when he came to prominence as editor of venerable Aussie surf mag Tracks. Sean was at the helm of Tracks for the best part of a decade, during which he helped to transform the much loved titled both commercially and reputationally, before leaving to forge the career he has today, and which sees him deftly balance editorial and brand work. Today (as you must if you hope to have any type of career in the industry), he wears many hats. He works for Patagonia Australia, is publisher and editor of venerable Aussie surf magazine Surfing World, and is still one of the most respected and sought-after writers in the game. He has also, almost to his own surprise, embraced his own particular form of highly influential and effective activism. As he explains during our chat, this evolution has been a gradual one. Today he finds himself at the forefront of the activism conversation in the Australian surf industry, thanks to his involvement with causes such as Fight For the Bight, and the impassioned, hilarious way he raises awareness about specific issues on his very singular Instagram feed. Sean justly has a reputation as one of the savviest, funniest and generally most essential voices in the game, something this honest, open and frequently hilarious conversation amply demonstrates. Hope you enjoy our conversation. New episodes of Type 2 are released every four weeks through my Looking Sideways channel. Hear it by subscribing to Looking Sideways via ApplePodcasts, Spotify or any of the usual other podcast providers. Thanks to Ewan Wallace for the theme tune, and to my editor Fina Charleson.
