Theresa and I run the gamut in this conversation, from her many experiences as a nurse to her sudden role as a breast cancer patient. Her book -- Healing: When a Nurse Becomes a Patient -- forms the basis of our wide-ranging conversation. We cover her experience plus compassion, empathy, overwhelm, our for-profit medical system, and the varied challenges/obstacles/mazes that patients face. This discussion touches all of us at some point, because we all interface with the medical world. And how to do it in the best way possible, for everyone involved in patient care?

Theresa Brown, oncology nurse, author, and breast cancer survivor, shares what she learned from her experience as a cancer patient. As she did in her book The Shift, Brown draws us into her work with the unforgettable details of her daily life—the needles, the chemo drugs, the rubber gloves, the frustrated patients—but from her new perch as a patient, she also takes a look back with rare candor at some of her own cases as a nurse and considers what she didn't know then and what she could have done better. She shares her disappointments and triumphs and eloquently lays out what we need to do to be better at compassionate care. Today on the show, I proudly welcome New York Times bestselling author Dr. Theresa Brown, RN. Her new book, "Healing: When a Nurse Becomes a Patient," is now available in hardcover, and what read it is. Theresa has a phenomenal sense of humor and an inherently advantageous perspective on the inner workings of healthcare. Yet, when the coin flipped, she found herself a fish out of water while still swimming in the fishbowl. So, brace yourself for the usual 80s nostalgia train combined with some horrible Dad jokes, a smidgen of survivor guilt, and a wild ride through the "cancer is a contest" theater of the absurd. Fun fact: This episode may be the first show I've ever done that channels Fast times at Ridgemont High and Ferris Bueller through the lens of nursing while throwing tons of shade at Grey's Anatomy. Oh, one last thing. We had a couple of sound glitches during the show, and my editor Kyle did his best to compensate for it. So please forgive any blips, bleeps, and weird stuff. So without further ado, I present Theresa Brown. Enjoy the show.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
In today's episode, I speak with the NY Times Best Selling author, Theresa Brown, RN. In her new memoir, HEALING: When a Nurse Becomes a Patient, (Algonquin Books: April 12, 2022), Brown tells her intensely personal story and presents an honest – and rare – look at struggling with the illness while navigating the maze of American health care from the unique standpoint of both a patient and a practitioner. Brown vividly chronicles her journey, from the mammogram appointment that would change her life to her diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. She writes about the small joys she finds amid her fears – riding her bike to radiation appointments, a hiking trip with her husband and kids, and the constancy of her dog. But despite years working as an oncology and hospice nurse, Brown is constantly surprised by the lack of compassion she experiences during her treatment. Links: Buy the book. There are misconceptions about nursing that many people don't understand. As nurses, we struggle with many things, and as part of the healthcare system, we are expected to be at a particular place in the hierarchy. We are often looked down and are expected to "do as we're told" rather than a colleague. While this isn't always the case, it is happening in many hospital settings. How can we change these misconceptions? What can nurses do to help each other? In today's episode, we welcome our guest, Theresa Brown. She is a nurse turned author of the New York Times bestsellers Critical Care, The Shift, and Healing: When a Nurse Becomes the Patient. She also shared her experiences as a nurse and patient after being diagnosed with cancer. So join us as we learn about the misconceptions of nursing and what we can do to change that. As a nurse, you never truly understand the level of terror your patients are experiencing until you become one yourself. New York Times best-selling author Theresa Brown, RN, shares her breast cancer treatment journey along with details about her new book, “Healing.” Diagnosed with breast cancer in fall of 2017, Theresa underwent a lumpectomy and four weeks of radiation before starting Tamoxifen, which ruined her life for three and a half years before she quit. With our Season 2 Breast Cancer Stories co-host Natasha Curry, we uncover similarities and surprising differences in treatment as nurses-turned-patients. We were shocked to discover that like Kristen and Natasha, Theresa's breast cancer was missed by mammography and was only discovered because she was participating in a study in which women also received an ultrasound to see if it gave better diagnostic results. Theresa has been a contributor to the New York Times, and her words can be found on CNN.com, in the American Journal of Nursing, the Journal of the American Medical Association, and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. She's also been a guest on MSNBC Live and NPR's “Fresh Air.” She received her PhD in English from the University of Chicago. Episode page and links: https://valuecapturellc.com/he65 Welcome to Episode #65 of Habitual Excellence, presented by Value Capture. Joining us again today is Theresa Brown, PhD, BSN, RN. She is a nurse and writer who lives in Pittsburgh. Her third book — Healing: When a Nurse Becomes a Patient — is available now. It explores her diagnosis of and treatment for breast cancer in the context of her own nursing work. Her book, The Shift: One Nurse, Twelve Hours, Four Patients' Lives, was a New York Times Bestseller. Theresa's BSN is from the University of Pittsburgh, and during what she calls her past life she received a PhD in English from the University of Chicago. Today's episode is the second part of a two-part series with Theresa that started in episode #64. In today's episode, Theresa talks about the conviction of RaDonda Vaught -- why is this triggering a lot of fear amongst nurses -- and they talk more about the issues she raises in her books. Host Mark Graban also asks Theresa questions and discusses topics including: 250,000 Americans a year are dying from medical errors and “no one is doing much to change that” — why is that? What can be done (or needs to be done) to reduce infections and medication errors? You've written about mistakes you've made… and you wrote about how that wasn't easy. What happened with the mistake you made (and I hate how that sounds blaming) — the mistake you were involved with regarding the steroid injection? You wrote about being “too proud” to tell your manager that a shift's assignment was “potentially overwhelming” — Why was that? Thoughts on laws requiring certain nurse to patient ratios? What can be done about the problem of nurses not getting breaks or time to eat lunch Thoughts on 12-hour shifts? Increased risk of error, but fewer handoffs. Can we improve the way handoffs are done? “One of the key factors in burnout, though, is employees feeling like they have little control over their work environment. That's pretty much status quo in hospitals for nurses and doctors.” — What can be done about that?? Epilogue - your main recommendations for our American health system?

Today's episode is the first part of a two-part series with Theresa. Come back in two weeks for the next part in Episode #65. In today's episode, Theresa talks about the need to improve healthcare for the sake of patients and for caregivers. How did Theresa's view of healthcare change when she became a breast cancer patient? Host Mark Graban also asks Theresa questions and discusses topics including: Is there sometimes an "empathy gap" in healthcare? Making things easy for patients is not currently a goal of healthcare? It sounds like nobody was coordinating (or explaining) your overall cancer situation? Why did you feel "left in the dark?" Did caregivers know you were a nurse? Were you reated differently? “This job would be easier if there weren't such a narrow divide between being the canary in the coal mine and Chicken Little" -- is there an empathy gap toward nurses and other caregivers? Nursing shortages are being reported across the country, but there's also rising interest in this critically important profession. This hour, hear from nurses entering the field in our state, and from nursing educators and experts about why the term “burnout” doesn't capture what's driving the shortage. University of Saint Joseph professor Heather Evans prefers the term “moral distress.” Nurses are by nature the noticers, the canaries in the coal mine, but the conditions of the pandemic have prompted reports of higher-than-average nurse-to-patient ratios, exacerbating a long-looming shortage. As nurse and author Theresa Brown wrote, "nurses are not an infinitely elastic resource; they're people, many of whom are exhausted, traumatized, barely holding themselves together. It's time to really see and care for them." What are the barriers to keeping new nurses in the field? Our guest today is Theresa Brown, oncology nurse, columnist, and author of The Shift: One Nurse, Twelve Hours, Four Patients’ Lives. Theresa began her career as a writer in 2008 when she published an essay in the New York Times about a dramatic and emotional experience she had with a dying patient. The piece received national attention, and was anthologized in the Best American Science Writing and The Best American Medical Writing in 2009. Since then, she has written dozens of pieces about nursing, and has become a leading voice for nurses and nurse advocacy across the country. Her first book, Critical Care was published in 2010, and is widely used as a textbook in nursing schools. Theresa’s writing frequently pulls back the curtain on the experiences and challenges that nurses face in their daily work. Sometimes this reveals frustrating working conditions, or difficulties dealing with hospital administration; but just as frequently, it shows the strength, skill, and commitment that nurses need to provide their patients with the best care they can. So it’s no surprise that President Obama quoted from Theresa’s blog when he was advocating for the Affordable Care Act in 2009. In what she calls her “past life,” Theresa received a PhD in English from the University of Chicago and was an English professor at Tufts University. I began by asking her about this past, and about the somewhat non-traditional path she took to becoming a nurse.
