Our miraculous transformation in Christ does not just impact us, or our relationship to our church body - but it starts at home. The true test of our sanctification is taking place at home, with what our families see in us and how we love and treat one another.
My motivational quote for today is by – Stewart Stafford, “The greatest gift a parent can give a child is self-confidence.” I am proud of many things I have accomplished in my life. The thing I am most proud of is being a mom. For me my mom job has always been the most important job I've had. At time I have felt completely inadequate only to be surprised by something amazing my kids did or watching them interact with others using wonderful communication skills. compassion, and respect. So, I know I must have done some things right along the way…lol. Being a working mom and then a small business owner when my kids were young, my husband and I needed to create structure, routines, and clear expectations which allowed us to have a home filled with peace and joy in our family unit. As a social worker and mental health advisor, Lyle Burrup has seen many youth "falling apart". This is due largely to an increase in stress and a lack of resilience. In every spiritual tradition, we find teachings on the virtues and qualities that we most want to pass on to our kids―such as generosity, kindness, honesty, determination, and patience. Today, a growing body of research from neuroscience and social psychology supports these teachings, offering insights into cultivating these virtues in ourselves and in our families. In his new book Raising Resilience: The Wisdom and Science of Happy Families and Thriving Children (Sounds True, 2017), Christopher Willard offers a practical guide for parents and educators of children from preschool through adolescence, detailing ten universal principles for happy families and thriving children. Bridging the latest science with Eastern wisdom to explore ourselves and share with our children, Dr. Willard offers a wealth of teachings on: Getting through Giving―the many types of generosity we can model for kids, and the fascinating new findings on the power of givingWhy Doing the Right Thing Is the Right Thing to Do―living in harmony with oneself, one’s family, and one’s communityLess is More Parenting―how letting go of what’s no longer necessary creates space, freedom, and the possibility for something newBuilding a Wiser Brain―three types of wisdom and how to steer kids’ "under-construction" minds toward wise actionEven the Buddha Had Helicopter Parents―releasing anxiety about over- or under-parenting and the desire for the "perfect" familyThe Buddha and the Marshmallow―patience in spirituality and science, including practices to strengthen patience in yourself and your childrenWhat Sets Us Free―how truthfulness and honest behavior create safety and freedom for everyoneGrowing Up with a Grit and Growth Mindset―the best ways to encourage resilience and determination through reinforcing and rewarding the "growth mindset"The Kindness Contagion―cultivating lovingkindness, compassion, and empathyFinding Balance in a Broken World and Staying Steady through the Stress―how to abide life’s inevitable ups and downs through the attitude of equanimity"The practices in this book ultimately come together to help us build thriving, happy, and resilient families and communities, regardless of how we categorize them," writes Dr. Willard. Raising Resilience is an accessible resource to help each one of us and our family members, "evolve and grow into our best selves." Your natural mothering instinct usually means you put your childrens' needs before your own. But sometimes that can be to your - and their - detriment. Looking after yourself first helps you to be a better parent and a more positive role model to your children. In today's episode of Mum-to-Mum Monday we'll be talking about the huge impact that your own physical and mental wellbeing has on the way you parent. I for one know that on the days where I've got my head together and feel calm, happy and rested, I'm a far better mummy. And, as if by magic, those are the days when my children respond to me more positively. It's a win-win situation. My guest today is SuperMum, Clare Crew. Clare lives in Adelaide, South Australia. She is an Educator, Speaker and Mum to 3 children aged 5, 8 and 9. Clare always wanted to work with children and is qualified in neuro-development. She earned a degree in Early Childhood Education followed by a Masters Degree in Special Education. When Clare had her own children she thought that, with all the learning and experience she had working with children, she would have parenthood sorted. But her children taught her that there are some things you just can't learn from books. Parenthood led Clare on a journey of transformation where she realised that the well-being of mums is just as important as the well-being of children. In juggling her children with a small age gap, practising self-care was a critical component in making sure she became the parent she wanted to be. Clare now uses her academic knowledge and hands-on experience to empower parents and teachers with real-life strategies for supporting children's success. She does this through her blog, via the Thriving Children Podcast, and in her consulting work. In today's episode, you'll learn that your own mindset and well-being is a fundamental part of being a great parent. By making yourself a priority rather than always putting yourself last and making do with the dregs, not only are you thriving as a mum, you're helping your children to thrive too. I'm delighted to welcome Clare to my show today. She teaches us that, whilst there's no correct formula to parenting, looking at your own needs and answering them, helps you serves your entire family in the most productive and successful way. You can find the full write up from this episode including the Show Notes at www.Lisa-York.com/079 Your iTunes Rating and Review helps spread the SuperMum message. Thanks so much!
In this episode, I interview Clare Crew, a mother, teacher, speaker and host of the Thriving Children podcast. Clare shares with us some of the ups and downs on her journey of parenting and integrating that with her role as an educator, being still a great teacher while having some energy left for your own children. She experienced post-natal depression in her shift into motherhood, and I really wanted to have her on the show because of course teaching is still a predominantly female workforce and many still think of it as a very family-friendly profession, but it isn't always the case. Obviously every parent's story will be different and there is no one-size-fits-all but as you probably know by now, I think it's important to talk about mental health challenges and also to share a range of different career options for teachers at any stage of life.Clare talks in this episode about the different choices she's made in her teaching career since becoming a parent, and how that's still evolving. I also particularly love her point about superheroes being fictional characters and that we shouldn't compare ourselves to them, or to anyone else for that matter. Have you ever made a recipe -- but forgot a key ingredient? Or maybe put in the wrong ingredient? One time, I left salt out of a cookie recipe. It was pretty bad. Another time, I accidentally put salt in instead of sugar. It was awful. Ingredients are important. So, what are the key ingredients to help instill in a child? To help them thrive? Let's face it: we will be adding ingredients, whether we mean to or not. That's just what happens in the parenting process. The question is whether we are intentional about the ingredients -- and if we have the RIGHT ingredients to put in. Our goal: A Thriving Person. The starting point: A child learning to thrive. Listen to this week's podcast for the 5 key ingredients to raising a thriving child. Raising Thriving Children Series Introduction Eggs, Balls, And Turtles The Important Influence On Children
If you are a parent, you know that hope/fear. You hope to raise a wonderful human being, and you fear making a mistake on the way. This week, we begin a series on raising thriving children. During this series, we will look at the goals of parenting, the limits of parenting, and what a parent can do to help a child learn to thrive. Thriving is not an innate skill. It is learned. But it can also be lost in the shuffle of life. I believe there are two paradigms of parenting: children are like eggs or children are like balls. Since eggs can shatter, they must be protected and insulated. Balls, on the other hand, bounce. Which model do you see in your own life? (By the way, if you missed it, I challenged our common understanding of self-confidence just last week. You can learn about that by CLICKING HERE.) Listen below for the two theories of parenting and an introduction to this new series.
Clare Crew is an early childhood and special education teacher who specializes in the brain-body connection. She helps the children the system leaves behind, those with learning, attention and behavioral challenges. Her message is simple; children need more movement and play in the early years of life. Today we are chatting with Clare who we met on a business trip to the Philippines and instantly connected with her. She holds a special role where she helps to overcome children's attention, learning and behavioural challenges by incorporating more movement, play, connection and of course real food. Clare holds a Degree in Early Childhood Education and a Masters in Special Education. She also holds certifications in neuro-development with a focus on the brain/body connection. We discuss common foods that may be affecting the behaviour of your child and what signs to look out for. We also dive into interesting discussions on the topic of primitive reflexes. Clare touches on the importance of some of these reflexes in children's ability to take in the information around them. We also hear why specific reflexes are commonly holding kids back in their learning capacity. Clare talks about events throughout her life that have fueled her passion for early education and improving food choices, including challenges overcoming her own infertility. She is now a proud mum of three! We explore how homework has been shown to do more harm than good and options you can take if you don't notice the benefits of homework for your children.
