A “green and growing crop” is often perceived as a visual validation of a healthy no-till system. But subsurface investigation is wise to truly understand the biological stability of your soils for long-term success, says Brad Forkner. In the latest edition of the No-Till Farmer podcast, brought to you by NewFields Ag, the seasoned agronomist will explain how to decipher soil biology and soil moisture profiles and utilize the information to determine when to quit on a crop or when to pump it up with biologicals, plant growth regulators, nitrogen and much more.
Tilled has pioneered "PayFac as a Service," creating a new category in the payments space that allows vertical software companies to embed payments within their platforms without becoming registered payment facilitators themselves. With over $40 million in funding, Tilled offers an alternative to industry giants like Stripe, providing better economics while maintaining high-quality developer tools. In this episode of Category Visionaries, I spoke with Caleb Avery, Founder and CEO of Tilled, about his journey from solo founder to category creator, the challenges of competing with established players like Stripe, and how he's built a successful business by identifying and serving an underserved segment of the market. Topics Discussed: Tilled's origin story and Caleb's two-year journey as a solo founder before finding product-market fit The process of creating and defining the "PayFac as a Service" category How Tilled positions itself against industry giants like Stripe Effective content marketing and thought leadership strategies on LinkedIn The power of speaking at industry conferences to build credibility Leveraging a mixed strategy of inbound marketing, digital advertising, and channel partnerships Tilled's vision to expand beyond payments into comprehensive embedded fintech solutions GTM Lessons for B2B Founders: Create your own category when existing ones don't fit: When Caleb realized that existing terms like "PayFac in a box" didn't accurately describe Tilled's offering, he invented "PayFac as a Service." This new category clearly communicated their value proposition and differentiated them from competitors. He explains, "The concept behind PayFac as a Service was really resonating with these vertical software companies that were saying, 'I don't want to go be a registered PayFac, I want all of the benefits as though I'm becoming a registered payment facilitator with 5% of the effort.'" Educate the market on your category through content: Tilled invested heavily in education through LinkedIn posts, blogs, ebooks, and speaking engagements to establish their category. Caleb notes, "Over a period of three or four months, we started introducing this concept of PayFac as a Service...by the time we actually launched the fundraising process, some of the early investors that I talked to were like, 'Oh, yeah, we've heard of that category.'" Leverage fellow founders for early validation: Even without a product, Caleb reached out to other founders to validate his ideas. "Other founders are very willing to help founders, especially in the early stages where I had nothing to sell them...I was shocked by the response rates that I was getting." This approach helped validate assumptions about pricing, product features, and contractual terms before launch. Balance personal and professional content for thought leadership: Caleb's LinkedIn strategy combined educational content about payments with personal stories about entrepreneurship and family life. "I think by allowing people to understand who I was as a person, it made me more approachable for some of the companies that were coming to us and saying, 'Hey, we're not ready to make a switch, but we are curious.'" Apply to speak at industry conferences: Caleb was surprised by how many speaking opportunities were available simply by applying. "It just shocks me how few founders that I know are willing to go apply for those speakerships, but it's really an incredibly easy thing for them to go do." These speaking engagements provided valuable opportunities to reach ideal customers and establish credibility. Run targeted "conquest" campaigns against market leaders: Tilled runs specific digital advertising campaigns targeting pain points with competitors, using long-tail keywords like "Why is Stripe customer service so bad?" This strategy drives quality leads from customers already experiencing problems with the dominant player in the market. Embrace channel partnerships in B2B SaaS: Unlike many competitors, Tilled welcomes referrals from ISOs, agents, and payment consultants. "We're one of the few folks in our space, which is still bizarre to me, that embraces a channel strategy...it's been an incredibly lucrative strategy...it's still 30 plus percent of the deal flow for Tilled." // Sponsors: Front Lines — We help B2B tech companies launch, manage, and grow podcasts that drive demand, awareness, and thought leadership. www.FrontLines.io The Global Talent Co. — We help tech startups find, vet, hire, pay, and retain amazing marketing talent that costs 50-70% less than the US & Europe. www.GlobalTalent.co

With experience in the payments industry for over a decade, Caleb Avery was often asked to help software companies who were looking to monetize their payments. Unable to find a solution that didn't require his clients to compromise on either technology, user experience, or economics, he decided that he needed his own solution. That led him to build Tilled and create PayFac-as-a-Service.Caleb first started working in the payments industry while in college, co-founding a credit card processing independent sales organization, or ISO, with a few of his friends. Beginning with very traditional credit card processing customers including restaurants, salons, liquor stores and other brick and mortar businesses, Merchant Services Done Right later expanded into processing services for e-commerce businesses, software companies and now operates in 22+ states across the country.Over the years, he also consulted for larger software companies processing anywhere from $100 million to over a billion in annual payments volume. These clients needed a payments expert to help them negotiate agreements, develop new pricing models, and maximize their revenue from credit card processing. It was while working with these businesses that Caleb had a realization: software companies wanting to optimize their integrated payment processing solution were really looking for two key things. One, an instant digital sign-up experience for their customers. And two, to maximize the revenue they could earn.Tilled's revolutionary PayFac-as-a-Service platform allows software companies to enjoy all of the benefits of becoming a PayFac without any of the upfront investment or ongoing overheads, all while capturing the lion's share of the economics.Connect with Behind Company Lines and HireOtter Website Facebook Twitter LinkedIn:Behind Company LinesHireOtter Instagram Buzzsprout

In this week's edition of the Merchant Sales Insight, I explain how payments professionals can find, contact, and sell software companies on integrating payment processing. This edition is sponsored by Tilled, who has, in my opinion, the best all around package for technology companies who want to monetize payments. Fortunately, they also partner with ISOs and Agents, allowing them to sell software companies that add new MIDs to their portfolio every month on auto-pilot.
Story taken from Majushree Thapa's book, Tilled Earth
I believe a portfolio that grows exponentially without your involvement in the pinnacle of residual income. That is the opportunity that exists by selling software companies that service small business owners. Integrated your payment processing with their software allows you add a new MID every time they sell a new client. Tilled makes it easy to integrate payments into any software solution and allows the software company to remove the merchant enrollment barriers while increase income. When was the last time God broke ground in you!?!? I mean really dug deep into your inner most being and brought something to the surface? In today's episode, we want to ask all of you who have been “TILLED” to share how God changed your heart, dug up your soil, and showed you how you can be soft again. We have to allow ourselves to be broken apart if you have become hard soil, if we have been walked over again and again, and we know that nothing is going to sink in to take root in our lives. It is the tilling process that God does in us that can allow us to grow.

Microbes matter in the soil Microbes are tiny!!!!!! There are more microbes in a teaspoon of soil than there are people on the earth. Soils contain about 8 to 15 tons of bacteria, fungi, protozoa, nematodes, earthworms, and arthropods. Soil microorganisms exist in large numbers in the soil as long as there is a carbon source for energy. large number of bacteria in the soil exists, but because of their small size, they have a smaller biomass. Actinomycetes are a factor of 10 times smaller in number but are larger in size so they are similar in biomass to bacteria. Fungus population numbers are smaller but they dominate the soil biomass when the soil is not disturbed. Bacteria, actinomycetes, and protozoa are hardy and can tolerate more soil disturbance than fungal populations so they dominate in tilled soils while fungal and nematode populations tend to dominate in untilled or no-till soils. Organic matter decomposition serves two functions for the microorganisms, providing energy for growth and suppling carbon for the formation of new cells. Soil organic matter (SOM) is composed of the "living" (microorganisms), the "dead" (fresh residues), and the "very dead" (humus) fractions. The "very dead" or humus is the long-term SOM fraction that is thousands of years old and is resistant to decomposition. Soil organic matter has two components called the active (35 percent) and the passive (65 percent) SOM. Soil organic matter can be broken down into its component parts. One hundred grams (g) or 100 pounds (lbs) of dead plant material yields about 60–80 g (lbs) of carbon dioxide, which is released into the atmosphere. The remaining 20–40 g (lbs) of energy and nutrients is decomposed and turned into about 3–8 g (lbs) of microorganisms (the living), 3–8 g (lbs) of non-humic compounds (the dead), and 10–30 g (lbs) of humus (the very dead matter, resistant to decomposition). The molecular structure of SOM is mainly carbon and oxygen with some hydrogen and nitrogen and small amounts of phosphorus and sulfur. Soil organic matter is a by-product of the carbon and nitrogen cycles. Tilled or unhealthy soils release a lower percent of nitrogen due to lower microbial activity For several years, crops on the newly tilled soil will grow better than the surrounding soils, but over time the soil will be depleted of carbon and the newly tilled soil will become less fertile because the carbon is oxidized as carbon dioxide and lost to the atmosphere. In segment 2 Joey and Holly talk about some odd Garden remedies that actually work The composition of urine varies from person to person, but it generally has an NPK ratio of 11-1-2. The nitrogen found in human urine ensures lush foliage growth; hence, it is best for greens and grassy plants like corn. The high salt content may scorch the plants if you pee directly on them, so it is better to do it a little away from the base of the plant. Better still, collect the pee and dilute it with 10 times water before applying it to the root zone. For tender plants and seedlings, dilute it further. Bury your kitchen scraps Add egg shells Wood ash from wood burning stoves and fireplaces can alkalinize the soil in your asparagus patch and vegetable beds growing broccoli, beans, and beet Get rid of aphids with soap and water Neem oil Baking soda for fungal diseases In segment 3 Joey and Holly welcome their guest Author of The Farm Girl’s Guide to Preserving the Harvest Ann Accetta Scott of https://afarmgirlinthemaking.com/author/ann/ Ann Accetta Scott is an author, blogger, speaker, entrepreneur, and homesteader. A once suburban housewife turned sustainable homesteader. She is passionatr about the movement of cooking from scratch, clean eating, food ownership, preserving the harvest, natural living, and the art of living simply. 1. You did not grow up homesteading - how did you get into it and why? 2. Many people hear the word ferment and think beer, or yeast possibly, but in the world of homesteading or even gardening, fermenting is another way to preserve food. Can you expand on that and what are some ways an urban gardener could use fermenting to help preserve some of their harvest? 3. Many people dont think about using dehydration to preserve their harvest, and you can find dehydrators gently used for a good price. What are some ways you dehydrate to preserve? 4.Tell us about your book - The Farm Girl’s Guide to Preserving the Harvest - what can people expect from it and anything notable in it? 5. Tell us more about where to find you... In segment 4 Joey and Holly answer gardener's questions Q:How can I fix blossom end rot? A: Keep the soil moist. When the soil stays to dry the calcium that is available in the soil is locked out that is the element in which is needed to correctly form the bottom of the tomato. By keeping the soil watered and damp it will not fix the current problem on the plant but will prevent the next generation of fruit development from obtaining the rotten portion on the bottom as it develops. People often say use 2 tablespoons of Epsom salt for 1 gallon of water and water it in this works because you're watering the plants Epsom salt is different than calcium Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate so keep the plants watered if you do see fruit that is rotten on the bottom remove it before it is allowed to fully develop to allow the plant to focus on fruit that is good not rotten. Q:When is the right time to plant fall bulbs A: Not all bulbs should be planted in the fall.keep this in mind Dahlias and gladiolus should be planted in the spring, while daffodils and tulips do well when planted in late summer or early autumn. the rule of thumb: If you are planting a bulb that blooms in the spring, plantit in the fall. What does Peter Drucker have to do with your product team hiring strategy? Turns out not much really, but in this episode of The Dirt we attempt to make that clumsy connection. Richard did video interviews with smart design leaders across the profession. This desire to know what other design leaders think led to a book called Design Leadership. Richard gets transparent in this interview as he talks about how he had to change as a leader - focus and patience were his initial downfalls that he had to change. True creative leaders will stop doing many things, and will instead focus on the one thing only they can do well.Creation of a vision, and the values that support that vision need to be:- timeless- disconnected from technology, and- have immense focus built into themThere are many more leadership nuggets in this interview!
