Low-cost, Low-loss, Ultra-wideband Miniaturized Feed for Modern Interferometric Radio Telescopes by Vincent MacKay et al. on Sunday 16 October We have developed, built, and tested a new feed design for interferometric radio telescopes with "large-N, small-D" designs. Those arrays require low-cost and low-complexity feeds for mass production on reasonable timescales and budgets, and also require those feeds to be miniaturized to minimize obstruction of the dishes, along with having ultra wide bands of operation for most current and future science goals. The feed presented in this paper modifies the exponentially tapered slot antenna (Vivaldi) and quad-ridged flared horn antenna designs by having an oversized backshort, a novel method of miniaturization that is well-suited for deeper dishes. It is made of laser cut aluminum and printed circuit boards, such that it is inexpensive ($lesssim$ 75 USD when purchased in bulk) and quick to build; it has a 5:1 frequency ratio, and its size is approximately a third of its longest operating wavelength. We present the science and engineering constraints that went into design decisions, the development and optimization process, and the simulated performance. We optimized and built a version of this feed design for the Canadian Hydrogen Observatory and Radio-transient Detector (CHORD) prototypes. When simulated on CHORD's very deep dishes (f/D=0.21), with CHORD's custom first stage LNAs, the on-sky system temperature Tsys of the complete receiving system from dish to digitizer remains below 30 K over the 0,3-1.5 GHz band, and maintains an aperture efficiency between 0.4 and 0.6. The feed is designed to slightly under-illuminate the CHORD dishes, in order to minimize coupling between array elements and spillover. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2210.07477v1

Last night's Raw put a number of storylines into motion...leading to three pretty big matches being announced for next week. The Miz ambushed John Morrison, putting an end to their partnership. Those two men will meet in a match on next week's Raw. The breakup went down after Xavier Woods beat Miz. Morrison tried to spray Woods with a drip-stick...but got Miz instead. Doudrop formally cut ties with Eva Marie - although she's keeping the name for some reason. Eva attacked Doudrop backstage to seal the split. Those two are also set for a match on next week's Raw. Last night's show opened with the NEW United States Champion Damian Priest confronting WWE Champion Bobby Lashley. That eventually led to Priest & Drew McIntyre taking on Lashley & Sheamus. Lashley walked out on his partner...and Sheamus was pinned after a Claymore from McIntyre. So, Lashley will face Sheamus in a non-title match on next week's Raw. The celebration for the NEW Raw Women's Champion Charlotte Flair was interrupted by Alexa Bliss...but she only wanted to say “Hi”. As for the former champ, Nikki A.S.H. tagged with Rhea Ripley and beat Nia Jax & Shayna Baszler. Ripley pinned Baszler with the Riptide. Riddle pinned AJ Styles with Bro Derek to win last night's main event. Also, Karrion Kross - with some snazzy new entrance gear - beat Ricochet. This week we have some really interesting stories for you as David and Simon are joined by a couple of great guests: Gary Turner, a friend of the show and Co-founder and MD of Xero Helene Panzarino, MD of Rainmaking Colab Norris Koppel, CEO of Monese We kick off the episode by talking about the third major acquisition this year: Global Payments buys TSYS for 21.5 billion dollars! The combined company will be lead by a 12 member board and go by the name Global Payments. Gary points out that with a name like Global Payments, the strategy is kind of hiding in plain sight and looking at the current state of the industry, there are quite a lot of things happening, particularly within payments. Also, try and say multi monolithic architecture after a glass of wine or two. Next up, we talk about Revolut. Are they the most-complained-about small online bank? The bank, which has 2 million customers had 171 claims made against them between 2015 and 2018, compared to only 82 claims made against Monzo. Despite receiving more complaints compared to Monzo and similar online banks, the number is still far less than Barclays and Lloyds who both had more than 100 000 complaints made against them during the same time period! Simon argues the title is slightly misleading... and David agrees! It is making a lot of very little. It is also worth pointing out that Revolut has more features and products then Monzo, so is it really fair to compare them both? Other stories include: NatWest is the “most complained about” Plaid comes to the UK A Goldman Sachs rival pulled out of the Apple Card deal on fears it will be a money loser Robinhood on track for at least $7 billion valuation with upcoming funding round French teen banking startup Pixpay raises EUR3.1m CBA invests heavily in tech-for-trust image rebuild NatWest apologises for patronising women, by patronising women All this and so much more on today's show. The business of merchant services continues to undergo two forms of transformation. First, the merchant services businesses, either as acquiring banks or via non-bank acquirers, has undergone massive consolidation over the last five years and more. Fiserv’s takeover of First Data, announced on January 16, is just the latest example. The second sea change is the expansion of products and services these entities deliver. What was a fairly innovation-averse industry has become, under the competitive pressure of companies like PayPal and Square, far more committed to delivering value that helps customers run their business, not just accept card payments. At the POS, Square changed the merchant services game by delivering a great deal more business value to the small merchant than the traditional ISO or agent focused on placing stand-beside terminals next to dumb cash registers. For the price of payment processing, Square has given those merchants inventory, time and attendance, sales and marketing focused reporting, and more. As a result, the giants in this game have been forced to respond. In 2013, First Data acquired Clover to reach small retailers and restaurant customers. Others, like Global Payments’ Heartland unit, have invested heavily in serving the mid-tier and larger restaurant industry. To deliver similarly broad services, TSYS recently come out with three new merchant offerings targeted at micro merchants, single shop operations, and larger merchants. The new line is called Vital, at vitalpos.com and its solutions are called Vital Mobile, Vital Plus, and Vital Select. Along with the new Vital hardware, we can expect the offering, taking advantage of cloud delivery, to expand its software and services line-up in the future - a trick that the old POS terminal model never could pull off. Take a listen to this episode’s discussion with Gavin Rosenberg, vice president of product marketing, at TSYS. It’s a revealing conversation about the decision making and product strategy of a major provider of merchant services.
