Tony then looped a fishing wire tightly around Halls neck and then attached the wire to his modified, sawn-off shotgun Necklace trap (and attached the other part to himself.) Now he was able to lead Hall around by the Shotgun attached to Halls neck and if Hall tried to run away, or if Tony is hurt and falls to the floor then the shotgun goes off...along with Halls head. (Link to images bottom of description)This started a 63 hour ordeal that lead from Halls office, down the streets of Indianapolis, to Tonys booby trapped apartment via a stolen police car. The situation almost ends quickly when Mr Psycho Shotgun Man accidentally falls over while walking, the only reason Halls brain didn't end up splattered all over the pavement was because he used it and squatted down as soon as he fell, stopping the booby trapped shotgun from going off. Tony had even planned this to the point that his house was a identical recreation of Halls office that he took him from. On February 8, 1977, 43-year-old Tony Kiritsis walked into the office of mortgage broker Dick Hall and WIRED THE BARREL OF A SAWED OFF SHOT GUN TO HALL’S NECK.  This "dead man's line" meant that if a policeman shot Kiritsis the shotgun would go off and shoot Hall in the head. It all started with a friend request. Amanda Playle was flattered to see the Facebook request come in from her old high school boyfriend, Anthony Reynolds. The two hadn’t spoken for a while, but they quickly reconnected. They talked about their lives. So much had changed since their high school days. Amanda was married to her husband Paul. She’d become a mother. Over time, she admitted to Anthony that her marriage wasn’t perfect. But when Anthony pressed her to meet up, she declined. She didn’t want to cross a line. But Anthony refused to take no for an answer. Soon, he began stalking and harassing her. Then Kristin tells us about a man who fell behind on his mortgage payments. Tony Kiritsis planned to turn his real estate into a shopping center, but after falling behind on his payments a few too many times, he found himself under the threat of foreclosure. In February of 1977, a desperate 44 year old Tony Kiritsis walked into Meridian Mortgage in Downtown Indianapolis looking to clear the balance on his property loan once and for all...but not with money.He was having trouble keeping up with the payments for his investment property, and believed that Meridian had been steering potential tenants away from his property. As the true holder of the deed to his property, they purposely hid information about prospective buyers so that they could wait Tony out. They knew he was struggling to keep up with the payments and wanted to let him default on the loan so that they could seize the property...sell it...and keep all of the profits for themselves.He fully believed that he had been taken advantage buy a corrupt organization. The 40th Anniversary of the Tony Kiritsis hostage incident that captured national headlines and changed live news coverage. Forty years ago (1977) in downtown Indianapolis, Tony Kiritsis went to the fourth floor of 129 E. Market Street - his left arm was in a blue string, and carrying a department shoe box and blueprints in his right. It wasn't strange for the director of Meridian Mortgage, Richard Hall, to see Kiritsis sitting in the lobby of his office when he arrived after 8 a.m. Kiritsis would regularly show up to discuss his plans for a strip mall on the west side of Indianapolis. But this morning was different. Richard Hall invited Kiritsis into his office and for the next 63 hours, Kiritsis held a sawed-off shotgun to Hall's head with a dead man's line wired to the trigger. Alan Berry and Mark Enochs are Indianapolis filmmakers who have spent the last four years putting together a true-crime documentary about this importance piece of Indianapolis history. They have interviewed over 40 people - news reporters, police officers, lawyers, jury members, family, & friends - to help make this film. We had Alan and Mark on the podcast to talk about this crazy story and how it changed policing, news reporting, and even state law. The footage of the event is absolutely remarkable and to have all of this film available later in 2017 will truly be a remarkable piece of Indianapolis History.
