Hosted on Acast. Locked On Avalanche - Daily Podcast On The Colorado Avalanche
The Colorado Avalanche have likely been chomping to get back out on the ice after that 7-0 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights last weekend. They welcome a very good, but decimated New Jersey Devils team who is down their superstar Jack Hughes. At this point, we don't think the Avs care who they are facing. They need to get back to Avalanche hockey and start scoring goals again. The team did announce a call-up from the AHL Colorado Eagles. Many were assuming the next player to get the call-up would be Riley Tufte. He's been killing it with the Eagles and in the small sample size with the Avalanche has impressed. But he was not who they called up. That went to Ondrej Pavel. There could be multiple reasons why this call-up went to Pavel and not Tufte. Jared Bednar has stated he wants to get many players involved and get them some time. If the Avs feel like Pavel has a role with the club throughout the season, they want to give him some time now while it's still early in the season. It also has waiver implications. If the Avs were to call up Tufte, they would have to place him on waivers if they eventually send him down, which there is a very good chance he would get claimed, or at least they feel he could. So they don't want to risk that on a call-up that might not see any action for this game. A lot to cover on today's episode! So tune in, subscribe and enjoy! We know his teammates love him. We know he's an imposing figure on the ice. We don't know why the Colorado Avalanche continue with the Kurtis MacDermid experiment. And what the Avs are doing now with MacD is truly an experiment. His main position will be forward. Something he has never done on a regular basis.MacDermid might not be in the starting lineup come Wednesday night when the Avs take on the Los Angeles Kings. Andrew Cogliano seems to be trending in the direction of he will be ready. If that is the case then MacDermid takes a back seat. But if some other team likes what they saw out of Riley Tufte during his preseason with the Avs and wants to claim him, they can scoop him up and using him will no longer be an option for the Avalanche if MacDermid struggles at the position and injuries occur. We also dive into league awards and make our selections for some of the bigger ones. Avalanche hockey returns in the preseason format. The Colorado Avalanche took the ice for the first time this preseason against the Minnesota Wild, and while the final score (4-3 loss) never matters in the preseason, there of course were good and bad things to take out of the matchup. The good for the Avs? The Ross Colton, Miles Wood and Tomas Tatar line is going to be problems for opposing teams. It might take a few games for the three of them to get fully on the same page, but once they do you can see how they will cause fits on both ends of the ice. Riley Tufte is not making it easy for Jared Bednar. Tufte is making a strong case for himself to be inserted into the opening day roster. And if the Avs have an injury that they feel might be better to sit a player out a few more games or weeks, you can be certain Tufte will be the guy to hold that spot. We break it all down in today's episode, so tune in, enjoy and subscribe! The article starts with "Twenty years later, the Great PowerPoint Panic reads as both a farce and a tragedy." How could we NOT have a conversation about this and look back at Edward Tufte's (in)famous pamphlet, "The Cognitive Style of PowerPoint in 2003." Lisbon transit cartographer and designer Aurélien Boyer-Moraes talks learning to use a computer at 19, creating his first 3x4 ft. transit map of an imagined Brazilian city after reading Jacques Bertin's Semiology of Graphics cover-to-cover, preempting Google Street View in Lyon with his 6x6 Seagull camera, ten years of designing transit maps for French cities with Attoma, and his heavily-annotated collection of 2,100 transit and city maps (which he might let you see someday.) See his maps at https://transit-map.com/Indented below are Aurélien's notes on my notes (he is, as you can imagine, a precise man). Transit maps originally designed by Aurélien Metz, and Aurélien's original design “The colors were imposed, there was no discussion, the use of these specific colors was mandatory because they were the new colors of the authority overseeing the transport in the agglomeration. They do not convey any specific information, which is against my general ‘credo', but we had to use them in the map.” Toulouse “My map had a strong palette which was consistent with the offer (the headways and the span of service) as you can see in the original from sept 2013, but it was scrapped in-house.” Dijon “A picture of a bus stop with the maps displayed (plan schématique général and the city center) and a pdf of an early version of the paper maps as they were issued in three different configurations: North, SE and SW (SO for sud-ouest), only the geographic map changed accordingly, the plan schématique remained the same, it was the reference. This initial configuration was irrelevant for a city of this size (250,000 inhabitants), then they reversed back to a single issue with, on one side the schéma + the center + information, and overleaf the geographic map.” Lyon, and Aurélien's original design Milan street map, completed in under two weeks Lisbon bus, tram and subway map Marseilles transit as of 1957 Vignelli's 1972 NYC subway map (cropped seven years later without his input, quelle horreur!) “I have a lot of respect for the early version of the map that the MTA committee led by Tauranac (with Michael Hertz as designer) released in 1979 (and was left almost untouched until the 1990s).One of the most relevant features of this map was the introduction of a very well thought out color code system by trunk in Mahanttan, which finally served also Vignelli since it makes his redesign of 2008 even more efficient! I am not a ‘blind pro-Vignelli, all against-1979 map.' It is way more subtle than that.Although the 1979 map evolved in such a wrong way since the mid-1990s, that today it is a spaghetti plate, and the redesign—first with the weekender and then with the opening of the first section of the 2nd subway line (after the demise of Vignelli)—by Cifuentes-Waterhouse in 2017 is more than ever powerfull thanks to the work of the 1979 committee.” Jarret Walker: a transit planning consultancy Sanborn insurance maps of Manhattan Two cartographers Aurélien would like to honor: “A Frenchman (for once) civil engineer from the prestigious École des ponts et chaussées, from the 19th century Charles-Joseph Minard (1781-1870) whose work is stilll pretty obscure to the general public, I learnt about him while reading The Visual Quantitative Display of Quantitative Information by Tufte, and you can easily find information about his impressive charts on the www.” “A Swiss designer (alive) who worked mostly in France, Rudi Meyer, he designed the 1976 splendid RER diagram and the French Railway system map that was on display from the late 1970s until 2011 in the trains. So you have some information — how are you going to share it with and present it to the rest of the world? There has been a long history of organizing and displaying information without putting too much thought into it, but Edward Tufte has done an enormous amount to change that. Beginning with The Visual Display of Quantitative Information, and continuing to his new book Seeing With Fresh Eyes: Meaning, Space, Data, Truth, Tufte's works have shaped how we think about charts, graphs, and other forms of presenting data. We talk about information, design, and how thinking about data reflects how we think about the world.Support Mindscape on Patreon.Edward Tufte received his Ph.D. in political science from Yale University. In this show, three experts of health systems data bring us insights into how racism and bias contribute to all points of health data collection, from uncovering old assumptions--like assuming lower thresholds of pain for African Americans, competition among groups, inappropriate diagnoses for bodies of color. Our guests invite us to recommend engaging diverse stakeholders in problem-solving, centering narratives on the direct experience of patients, disrupting and questioning the norm of whiteness in all aspects of health systems. Our guests are Sharon Attipoe-Dorcoo, Janice Tufte and Rachel Dungan.Sharon Attipoe-Dorcoo, Ph.D., MPH is Principal of Tersha LLC, is grounded in her cultural identity as a Ghanaian-American who embraces the intersectional facets of being a wife and mom in her work. As a community scholar activist, she found her path from engineering into public health. The vision for her work is rooted in culturally responsive and equitable tools for co-designing research and evaluation initiatives with communities, for national and international research and evaluation projects.Janice Tufte, Seattle, WA., identifies as a #PatientPartner involved in Health Systems/ Services Research (HSSR). Her focus of work is within the social determinants of health (SDoH), addressing disparities and building community partnerships. Janice served on a Patient Centered Outcomes Institute (PCORI) Learning Health Systems (LHS/SDoH) clinic-community liaison project as a Patient Co-Investigator in 2012 and this was pioneering for research projects to include patients directly in research proccesses ten years ago. Multi-stakeholder collaboration is a priority when starting any project as this is a recipe component to ensuring success.Rachel Dungan works at the intersection of sectors and stakeholder groups, to advance health policy and systems research (HPSR) and enhance its impact. Rachel's portfolio of work, as Director at AcademyHealth, focuses on engagement science: how to conduct and measure the impact of meaningful, equitable stakeholder engagement in health research, policy, and practice. She also oversees projects focused on best practices for collaboration and codesign, and for building the health data infrastructure to support patient-centered research. Rachel recently completed a Fulbright Public Policy Fellowship (FPPF) in Côte d'Ivoire, while studying local approaches to community-informed national health policymaking. She earned a Master of Science in Social Policy (MSSP) from the University of Pennsylvania, and her Bachelor of Science (BS) and Bachelor of Music (BM) degrees from the Pennsylvania State University Schreyer Honors College. She serves as an active speaker and patient advocate in the vision research and disability communities Resources mentioned on the show (and more!) link to document Contact: Sharon Attipoe-Dorcoo, Ph.D.Author of the children's book; Koli and Bosco "the Dog": Rescue from the Fire: https://youtu.be/f6XhV0sjnlMFacebook: KoliBoscoTwitter: @KoliBoscoInstagram: koli.boscoLinkedIn pageJanice TufteWebsite: https://www.janicetufte.com Twitter: @Hassanah2017Rachel DunganTwitter: @RedunganEmail: racheledungan@gmail.comLinkedIn pageOriginally recorded on 2/2/2022.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/posts/35274155)

This season has been crazy left and right with changes to the NHL schedule, NHL season plans, and even NHL rosters. But what about the AHL? The American Hockey League is the minor league affiliate to the NHL, and each team has a respective affiliate where their prospects play and can be called up at anytime to make their big break with their NHL club. We are joined by Riley Tufte - a forward for the Texas Stars and 1st Round Draft pick for the Dallas Stars who is now developing in the AHL. Riley chats with us about how he got to the major leagues, from his hockey development, time in college, and the intense training, as well as what the AHL season has been like in COVID-19. The AHL COVID-19 protocol has been similar to the NHL, but the playoffs were greatly effected. The AHL will not be playing for their version of the Stanley Cup, called the Calder Cup, and has changed how they will hold their playoff run. All of this and more as we sit down with Riley Tufte!
