A few months back, I was grabbing dinner with my friend Mark Fogel, and in the middle of our conversation about this very podcast, he leaned in and said, “You have to interview James Sarvis.”So I did.James is the kind of person who's built a career of commitment. He started at Delta Air Lines over 50 years ago — yes, five-zero — starting at the very bottom: cleaning bathrooms. Today, he's the VP of Global Cleanliness. But his story goes way beyond job titles.Over the years, James has held just about every position short of flying the plane: from leading airport customer service across 220 airports, to overseeing 24,000 flight attendants, to helping shape Delta's global partnerships. He's been through wars, recessions, a pandemic, mergers, even a hostile takeover attempt — and through it all, he's stayed grounded by one thing: a deep sense of purpose and loyalty. We talked about legacy, leadership, mentorship, being an 18-year-old college dropout, surviving a plane crash with his family, and why — even after five decades — he's still not done. You can find James Sarvis at:  LinkedIN: https://www.linkedin.com/in/james-sarvis-7183592/Email: james.a.sarvis@delta.comOur interview was recorded live at Delta Air Lines global headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia: www.delta.comSpecial thanks to Whitney Li for her production assistance!Click to text Bruce now!About Bruce Smith: Over the past 40 years, I've covered a lot of ground in my career: white collar, blue collar, college drop-out, college graduate, practicing CPA, multiple business owner, elected official, recruiter and career consultant. In this episode of the podcast we welcome Amelia DeLuca, Chief Sustainability Officer at Delta Air Lines.Besides being one of the World's largest airlines, Delta, is also a very active player in the field of air travel innovation and decarbonization.Delta has committed to getting to net zero by 2050 with Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) expected to play a big role in achieving this goal. To this end, Delta has signed a string of SAF deals across the US and is also working with SAF producers in several states to increase supply of this so-far scarce type of fuel. Delta intends to use 10% of SAF in its fuel mix by 2030 and to increase this figure to 35% by 2035. But this is not the only path to decarbonization that Delta is exploring. In fact, when it comes to sustainability, Delta is active on so many fronts that it has created the Delta Sustainable Skies Lab to gather all its sustainability-focused initiatives under one roof. Remarkably, just as Delta is marking its centenary, it is also actively investing in technologies that promise to re-shape the way to travel in the next 100 years. Two examples of this policy are Delta's is investment in leading eVTOL developer Joby Aviation and its strategic partnership with JetZero, a startup developing a revolutionary blended-wing-body aircraft concept capable of halving fuel consumption, all while redefining completely the passenger experience. So, tune in to listen to Amelia talking about all these exciting projects and explaining how they fit into Delta's vision of the future of commercial aviation!

Aviation accounts for around 2-3% of global emissions, and is showing no sign of decreasing. There has been a lot of focus on replacement fuels, but no real paradigm shift in the industry. Anders Forslund has a plan to change that. Anders is the CEO of Heart Aerospace, the Swedish airplane developers who've recently established an R&D facility in California to develop their 30 seater hybrid-electric plane. Later this year, their all-electric prototype will take to the skies in its first test flight. While there are a number of companies innovating in the aerospace sector, including Joby Aviation, featured in Episode 156 of Cleaning Up, Heart is targeting larger planes and longer routes. They already have orders to buy hundreds of planes, most notably from United Airlines, and have received early investment from Bill Gates' Breakthrough Energy Ventures. This episode was recorded at the Heart Aerospace facilities in El Sugundo, Los Angeles. Leadership Circle:Cleaning Up is supported by the Leadership Circle, and its founding members: Actis, Alcazar Energy, EcoPragma Capital, EDP of Portugal, Eurelectric, the Gilardini Foundation, KKR, National Grid, Octopus Energy, Quadrature Climate Foundation, SDCL and Wärtsilä. Today, we're talking about how GM has raised their 2024 guidance again, how Arkansas could be home to enough lithium to power all the world's EVs and how the FAA has issued its rules for air taxis.Show Notes with links:General Motors (GM) beat Wall Street's Q3 estimates, with shares surging 8%. Continued strong demand for trucks and SUVs drove the growth, while GM's revised 2024 profit outlook indicates industry resilience despite ongoing economic pressures.Adjusted earnings per share were at $2.96, surpassing the expected $2.43.Revenue hit $48.8 billion, outpacing forecasts of $44.6 billion and GM's stock jumped to a two-and-a-half-year high of $53.25.Strong SUV sales and cost cuts are expected to maintain dealer margins.EV sales are growing, but represent only 4% of U.S. deliveries."The consumer has held up remarkably well for us," said CFO Paul Jacobson.Researchers have found that southern Arkansas's Smackover Formation may hold up to 19 million tons of lithium, enough to meet global demand for car batteries nine times over by 2030. This discovery could have a significant impact on the EV market. The lithium is estimated to make up 36% to 136% of current U.S. reserves.ExxonMobil aims to start lithium production by 2027, supplying enough for over 1 million EVs annually by 2030.They are using dew direct lithium extraction technology that could be more environmentally friendly but remains largely unproven.Corporations are currently in a legal battle with landowners over mineral rights.Katherine Knierim, a hydrologist and the study's principal researcher estimates “there is enough dissolved lithium present in that region to replace US imports of lithium and more.”The FAA has released long-awaited final regulations for electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, marking a major step toward the future of air travel, including air taxis and cargo delivery.eVTOL aircraft are the first new aircraft category since helicopters in 1940 and the new regulations cover pilot training, safe altitudes, and visibility standards.Pilot training will include single-flight control for powered-lift aircraft, simplifying instruction.Industry players like Joby Aviation and Archer plan to launch air taxi services soon, with Joby's CEO praising the FAA for delivering the new regulations ahead of schedule.FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker said “This historic rule will pave the way for accommodating wide-scale Advanced Air Mobility operations in the future,”Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

The Joby hydrogen-electric eVTOL 523-mile flight, severe weather and the Southwest Dutch Roll, the danger of getting too close to an operating jet engine, excessive heat impacts on aviation, exploding soda cans that injure flight attendants, and turbulence and hot tea water burns. Aviation News Joby Aviation completes a 523-mile flight in an eVTOL powered by hydrogen-electric tech Joby Aviation, Inc. announced it has successfully flown a liquid hydrogen-electric eVTOL  demonstrator 523 miles over California. The aircraft was based on a Joby pre-production prototype battery-electric aircraft fitted with a liquid hydrogen fuel tank and fuel cell system. Joby Aviation photo. The liquid hydrogen fuel tank was designed and built by Joby. It stores up to 40 kilograms of liquid hydrogen which feeds the fuel cell system that produces electricity, water, and heat. The electricity powers six electric motors on the Joby aircraft. Batteries provide additional power primarily during take-off and landing. Joby plans to start commercial operations as soon as 2025 with its battery-electric air taxi. The company has a 6-year backlog of A320 family aircraft and is struggling to get production to the rate they desire. Aircraft owners who need narrowbody aircraft sooner are likely to look at Boeing and COMAC. So Airbus is seeking to focus its activity on an “improvement program,” although it may be years before the C919 is certified by Western regulators. For years, COMAC, the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, has worked to establish a viable Chinese commercial airframer. They started with the ARJ21 regional jet and then proceeded to develop the C919 narrowbody in the B737/A320 class. Lately, they've been working on a C929 widebody jetliner. A Southwest jet that did a ‘Dutch roll' was parked outside during a severe storm Investigators looking at the Southwest Airlines Boeing 737 Max that experienced a Dutch roll say the plane had been parked outside during thunderstorms with wind gusts of up to 84 mph. After some routine maintenance, the pilots experienced “odd movements of the rudder pedals.” The NTSB hasn't determined when the observed tail damage occurred. The speculation is that the tail damage occurred during the storm when the rudder slammed back and forth in the wind. Safety consultant John Cox, a former airline pilot, said “I do not see this as a Max issue. I do not see this right now as a 737 issue. I see this as a one-off.” Airport Ground Worker Killed After Getting Sucked Into Engine of Boeing 737 When They Stepped Into the ‘Danger Zone' The accident happened in Iran during routine maintenance when the engines were powered for a test run. The worker was trying to retrieve a tool left near the engine. As extreme heat bakes the West, emergency helicopters struggle to fly Medical helicopter flights have been canceled in some areas due to high temperatures. Air temperature and tarmac temperature can be factors. Also, a confined area can require more engine power to land, which is affected by high temperatures. Amid Oppressive Heat, Broiling Airplane Cabins Add to Travelers' Woes Unusually hot weather is causing cabin air conditioning systems to struggle to keep up. The Department of Transportation is studying whether to set minimum standards for cabin temperatures. Southwest Airlines Flight Attendants Are Being Injured By ‘Exploding' Coca-Cola Cans as Summer Heats Soar The Southwest Airlines drink restocking process is different than the one used by other airlines.

Episode Notes The Bahamas saw a drop in short-term rental bookings and hotel reservations in January after a U.S. State Department safety alert to travelers, writes Global Tourism Reporter Dawit Habtemariam. Habtemariam notes short-term rental bookings fell 7% in January from the same month in 2023. Meanwhile, hotels in the Bahamas also registered weekly occupancy declines from last year throughout the month. While higher average daily rates may have deterred bookings, those drops followed a U.S. Embassy alert warning Americans about crime in Nassau.  A State Department spokesperson said the overall Travel Advisory for the Bahamas is at Level 2, which advises U.S. citizens to be cautious in the country due to crime.  Next, Expedia Group's equity stake in American Express Global Business Travel has taken a beating — to the tune of $326 million, reports Executive Editor Dennis Schaal.  Expedia said on Monday the fair value of its equity stake in Amex GBT has dropped 40% since 2021. Expedia took a 19% stake in Amex GBT following its sale of corporate travel agency Egencia. However, Schaal notes Expedia may have benefited from the deal on several levels, including enabling it to offer hotel stays and vacation rentals to business travelers through Amex GBT.   Finally, flying taxis could take to the skies in Dubai by 2026 after local officials signed a deal with electric aircraft maker Joby Aviation, writes Airlines Editor Gordon Smith.  Joby's contract with Dubai's Road and Transport Authority gives the company exclusive rights to operate flying taxis in Dubai for six years. Smith notes Joby believes it could even operate air taxis next year, ahead of the planned 2026 launch. Joby has also signed a deal with infrastructure company Skysports, which will build and run take-off and landing areas for flying taxis in Dubai. Still, it's no sure thing: As with all pioneering technologies, progress in the sector has been peppered with pitfalls.

Listen to Future News Now 11.14.23 Our local eVTOL company, Joby Aviation did a demo flight over NYC this last weekend, showing they are ready for primetime, taxi-ing passengers from the Big Apple to JFK airport in 7 minutes!  It’s a slow couple of weeks on Mars now, as the Sun blocks our communications with the Red Planet.  But our fleet of robotic craft have plenty to do while they wait for us to regain contact.  The Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence organization just got a $200 million boost in their budgets from Franklin Antonio, co-founder of Qualcomm. NASA’s remote sensing tech for minerals is being tested at home via an sensor equipped modified U-2 spy plane, flying over America’s Southwest. They hope to find deposits of lithium, cobalt and nickel, vital for the electronics and battery industries. And it appears stem cell treatments can make a difference in preventing future heart attacks, the major cause of death in our country.. Enjoy our news segment!  Joby Aviation demonstrates their eVTOL aircraft over Manhattan
