This week, Donald Trump shared some deranged images on social media that called for the jailing of Liz Cheney. Taking his rage in a new direction, one image even called for her to face a military tribunal. Meanwhile, new reports suggest Trump is preparing an unexpectedly vicious wave of persecution if he wins. So what can Trump actually do to his political opponents if he unleashes all the powers of the presidency on them? We talked to Kristy Parker, former federal prosecutor and counsel at Protect Democracy, who explained why Trump's coming crackdown on his enemies could be more disturbing than we expect—and how to fight back against it. “Ethical non-monogamy isn't new… and it isn't exactly mainstream, but it isn't so fringe either (or reserved for those who live in the Bay Area).” That's according to New York Magazine, which released a cover issue on polyamory this month. Those who regularly date or love multiple people at once say it's liberating and fosters intimacy and connection. But even its most passionate advocates say polyamory can be emotionally and logistically exhausting, requiring extensive and frequent communication among partners. And the relationship style can carry stigma — prompting complicated decisions about whether and how to talk to friends, family or coworkers about it. We'll talk about polyamory and its increasing prevalence in popular culture and dating apps, and hear your experiences. Guests: Allison P. Davis, features writer, New York Magazine. Her reported story, "What Does a Polycule Actually Look Like?" anchors New York Magazine's cover story, "A Practical Guide to Modern Polyamory" Christopher Gleason, author, “American Poly: A History”; academic director, Georgia Coalition for Higher Education in Prison; part-time Assistant Professor, Kennesaw State University Josephine Chiang, film and TV actor based in NYC

Moscow's invasion of Ukraine eroded the concept of neutrality as an effective policy in a polarized world. That's especially true for countries in close geographic proximity to Russia. Recently, Finland joined the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, ending 100 years of neutrality. With 830 miles of border between Russia and Finland, NATO's newest addition changes the strategic balance in Europe. These major geopolitical shifts are likely to outlast the actual Russian invasion of Ukraine. What does that mean for the global world order? The Altamar hosts are joined by Mika Sinuhe Wallinheimo, Finnish Member of Parliament since 2011. Altamar's ‘Téa's Take' by Téa Ivanovic examines the increasingly conservative youth vote in Finland and Sweden. ----- Produced by Simpler Media
The continent of Europe has been home to every conceivable type of government over thousands of years, with democracy being the dominant force since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. Yet, with the elections of far-right politicians across the continent in recent years, the landscape has changed. In this episode of Big World, SIS professor and Transatlantic Policy Center co-director Garret Martin joins us to evaluate what this shift toward right-wing nationalism might mean for the future of European democracy. Professor Martin defines far-right nationalism (2:27) and explains its difference from the mainstream conservatism that functions within democratic norms (4:48). He discusses how Brexit has changed politics and the internal dynamics of political parties in the United Kingdom (6:17). He also talks about the results of Sweden's most recent general election and the new right-wing majority bloc (8:00). What effect does American support for right-wing leaders like Polish president Andrzej Duda and Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orbán have on European politics (11:25)? How has the war in Ukraine further complicated relationships and intercontinental politics among European countries (21:36)? Martin answers these questions and discusses what we can expect from Italy's new government, led by far-right Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni (24:55). The episode concludes as Martin examines both the extent to which this surge of right-wing parties threatens European democracy (29:13) and also current measures the European Union is taking to put pressure on countries that act undemocratically (31:04). During our “Take Five” segment, Martin shares five ways in which Europeans—whether officially, as in the European Union, or unofficially at the individual citizen level—can act to safeguard democracy (15:48).

Subway is in the midst of a turnaround that pivots on the sandwich chain's new ad campaign, Eat Fresh Refresh, a successor to some of the most effective marketing the restaurant industry has ever seen. Following up on the likes of $5 Footlong spots and the long-running focus on a customer's loss of 245 pounds from a Subway diet can't be a cakewalk. Just how difficult that challenge must be is the focus of this week's Restaurant Rewind podcast. Host and Restaurant Business Editor At Large Peter Romeo looks at two parallel situations from the 1980s: Wendy's iconic Where's the Beef? campaign and the cheeky run Burger King made on McDonald's via a series of head-to-head comparisons. As he shows, those attempts failed to have lightning strike twice. The recounts show how remarkable it is for a campaign like Subway's follow-up to deliver more thunder. Listen to this week's episode and every installment by downloading Restaurant Rewind from wherever you get your podcasts.
The Kremlin's decision to recognize the independence of the Russia-occupied Donetsk and Luhansk regions of eastern Ukraine, then launch an invasion of Ukraine, created new tensions between Kazakhstan and Russia. The remarks of Kazakh President Qasym-Zhomart Toqaev and Russian President Vladimir Putin when they were sitting together in St. Petersburg on June 17 showed the differences in opinion between the two governments on Ukraine and other issues. This week's Majlis podcast looks at the growing rift In Kazakh-Russian ties.
