We had to delay almost a week due to life circumstances, but it worked out because Nintendo dropped their largest direct to date right before we recorded. So obviously we talk about that and a bit about some random stuff that happened over the past few weeks. Matt played a bunch of 360 games which he adds to his rankings for us and then I talk all about Hollow Knight Silksong!
Jeff Grubb is joined by Jon Martin to recap everything you missed from today's Nintendo Direct. We're talking a new/old Virtual Boy, Mario Tennis, Amiibos, a new Fire Emblem game, Mario Galaxy coming to the Switch 2, new Mega Evolutions for Pokemon, and so much more from the Direct.

Twitch streamer Joey Vogt joins me from the great, untapped land that is Ohio for this latest episode of the podcast. Joey and I are both part of the Hyrule Gaming Group stream team, so I've had the pleasure of watching his Twitch streams and get to know him a bit more. Now, he gets to join me and share what he loves. We kick things off by talking about Game of Thrones. This show was not in Joey's wheelhouse to start with, as he wasn't so much a fantasy fan. That show changed his mind. We talk about the show - from storylines to favorite houses and characters, and why it kept him coming back for more. Joey also talks about how Game of Thrones opened him up to being interested in more fantasy media and even getting into history and mythology of the medieval time period. Our newest topic on the podcast is hiking! It's an unlikely one, but I do love getting to share what people love and enjoy. Joey talks about who got him interested in hiking and the great outdoors. We talk about some of the places that Joey and his partner have hiked, the experiences he's had in San Francisco, a hiking intersection with a popular fandom, and more. Then the back half of the episode, we talk about video games and Twitch streaming. Joey talks about how he got into video games when he was younger, including having owned a Virtual Boy back in the day. We talk about some of his favorites then and now, and what he looks for in games. Joey also talks about his decision to stream on Twitch. From his early days to the point where he thought about hanging up his controller. We talk about the community that he has fostered, the games you can find on his stream, and much more. Topic starts at 30:01. This week we discuss the Virtual Boy! You can find our Discord, Patreon, social media, and more at https://linktr.ee/retrowarriors.
Demons, monsters and elemental gems, oh my! Released in the same year as Donkey Kong Country, Mega Man X, and Super Metroid, this Capcom side scroller was a buried under an avalanche of classic titles. But one Julian of The Stage Select Podcast rescued this game from the bowels of a bargain bin and discovered one of the best experiences on the system. Join us as we discuss Firebrand, the Virtual Boy and the joys of mid-90's videogame magazine writing. This episode contains: Steven is under the weather and Devon had to run fast for Sonic 3. Ben's making his way through the Knuckles TV show (lots of bowling in this one) before seeing the absolute zaniness turned up to 11 of Sonic 3. Do y'all remember “Dumb Running Sonic” on Tumblr? Devon recommends Jury Duty (Amazon Prime): Imagine a prank show where everyone's an actor… except one guy. Chaos ensues. Devon says it's a must-watch, as is The Wild Robot. It's all about nature, death, and a reminder that “nature is real.” Production babies galore! Ben explains how he got a Virtual Boy emulator on his 3DS, while Steven has been reading the book Filter World. Ben's also been playing GRIP Combat Racing, which is kinda like Mario Kart if you prefer ecstasy to mushrooms. You can get it for free right now from Amazon Gaming. Devon's contemplating getting Mario Maker, but then he'd have to get a Switch and that's, like, a lot of work, man… Dumb Running Sonic: https://dumbrunningsonic.tumblr.com/ 3DS Virtual Boy Emulator: https://github.com/skyfloogle/red-viper Filterworld: https://www.kylechayka.com/filterworld My Video Went Viral. A quartet of kids in detention are schooled by an eccentric and sometimes cynical teacher who takes them on often horrifying field trips with the help of a time-traveling/teleporting/shrinking device. Their travels take them face to face with nature's most ruthless parasites, humanity's dumbest failed inventions, and much, much more. If WTF 101 had just made up all of these lessons, it'd still be a funny watch thanks to the clever storytelling, fast-paced plot, and punched-up dialogue. But it's the fact that the show seeks to educate audiences on real-world factoids that gives it that extra shine. It's hilarious, gross, weird, profane, and mostly true! It is NOT FOR KIDS and very much NSFW. Devon reflects on debates between theists and atheists. Why does evil exist? Maybe the animal kingdom knows. Watch the first episode for free on Youtube (The Gruesome Truth About Parasites): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3aZVgyUlSng Check out the entire series on Dropout: https://www.dropout.tv/wtf-101 Burn it all down: Steven presents a groundbreaking study that reveals RNA — not DNA — might trigger sunburns. Sunburn has traditionally been attributed to UV-induced DNA damage. However, a new study by the University of Copenhagen and Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, reveals that RNA, another vital cellular molecule, plays a major role in triggering acute sunburn reactions. Read more at Sciene Daily: https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2025/01/250117112413.htm Now for something a little more cheerful from Devon: Quantum suicide and immortality, a thought experiment exploring the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics. The experiment involves repeatedly engaging in an activity with a 50/50 chance of death, with the idea that consciousness will always exist in the universe where the individual survives. Ben is reminded of the short film “One-Minute Time Machine” where a man repeatedly uses a time machine to retry a conversation with a woman, but what happens in the realities he leaves behind? More on wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantum_suicide_and_immortality One-Minute Time Machine on Youtube: https://youtu.be/CXhnPLMIET0 “Book Club”: This week: Philip K. Dick's short story "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale” (1966). The story follows Douglas Quail, a man obsessed with Mars who seeks out a company to implant fake memories of a Martian trip. It's very different from the 1990 film adaptation of Total Recall, the film's action-oriented approach was very different from the story's focus on psychological elements. Is remembering something the same as living it? “I remember recording a good podcast once.” “Steven, we've never recorded a good podcast.” Read it here: https://philosophy.as.uky.edu/sites/default/files/We%20Can%20Remember%20It%20for%20You%20Wholesale%20-%20Philip%20K.%20Dick.pdf Next week: Alfred Bester's Fondly Fahrenheit. Though the story's disturbing premise—that a servile android-robot could turn on its human superiors and commit murder—was probably radical at the time, without Bester's way with words, Fondly Fahrenheit wouldn't have become the classic science fiction short story that it is today. It's still cited as one of the best sci-fi stories ever. Read it here: http://www.sfsfss.com/stories2/Bester,%20Alfred%20-%20Fondly%20Fahrenheit%20v1.0.htm

Comment 1: Ken Fallon on 2024-11-25: "Target Audience of 1" Mailing List discussions Policy decisions surrounding HPR are taken by the community as a whole. This discussion takes place on the Mail List which is open to all HPR listeners and contributors. The discussions are open and available on the HPR server under Mailman. The threaded discussions this month can be found here: https://lists.hackerpublicradio.com/pipermail/hpr/2024-November/thread.html Events Calendar With the kind permission of LWN.net we are linking to The LWN.net Community Calendar. Quoting the site: This is the LWN.net community event calendar, where we track events of interest to people using and developing Linux and free software. Clicking on individual events will take you to the appropriate web page. Any other business It's been another hectic month here at HPR Towers. As we discussed on the mailing list most of the time was taken by the migration to Mastodon, and the implementation of the mirrors on the Community Content Delivery Network. Some daily stats are been updated on https://hub.hackerpublicradio.org/hpr_ccdn_stats.tsv Summary of the changes to the repo https://repo.anhonesthost.net/HPR Dave updated his tooling for processing shows and they are now available on the Gitea repo. We finally got around to creating the HPR Documentation wiki. Community Content Delivery Network (CCDN) A location to track the deployment of the HPR Community Content Delivery Network, that provides a mirror network for our content. HPR Website Design This is literally in the whiteboard phase of the HPR website redesign. Where we can track Compatibility of the clients subscribed to our feeds. Useful Resources Where we can link to other free culture sites that provide useful services. Requested Topics Where we can track topics that have been requested, and link to shows that addressed them. There is also a list with information about Podcatcher and Podcasting Platform Compatibility. If anyone wants to adopt a player then please do so. The section on Workflow will be changing shortly due to Dave stepping aside, and also the need to distribute to multiple end points. All the processing will happen first, and then all the checks will be done at the same stage just prior to posting. For this to work we need help finding a simple manageable WYSIWYG editor that can produce sane HTML when the host uploads the show. We also need a new system to distribute the files from an origin to all the mirrors. Other changes and fixes. The day of the week is now available on the website. Fixed the RSS feed to show explicit status. Fixed a bug that limited the future feed to just 10 shows. Fixed a typo in the status page. Following feedback, added emphasis about the upcoming two weeks, to the scheduling guidelines. Notable shout out to the people who are promoting HPR and are helping people out with audio issues. Provide feedback on this episode.
