Rather than calling out bad attitudes about women, anti-domestic violence campaigners are advocating to call people in. This change of tactic includes meaningful conversations to promote sustained change - rather than shaming mates or colleauges who say the wrong thing. This new campaign comes ahead of White Ribbon Day, on 25 November. White Ribbon Day campaign manager Rob McCann spoke to Corin Dann.

This is a special series in which I will be interviewing 16 girls including myself about their experiences with Domestic Abuse to educate others on the signs and experiences, as well as the impact it can have on your mental health. The reason it's 16? On November 25th the United Nations marked this period the 16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence, starting on White Ribbon Day otherwise known as the International Day for the Eradication of Violence against Women, and ends on December 10th which is World Human Rights Day. I wanted to use my platform to bring more awareness to DV, and interviewed 16 pageant girls from past queens to future queens each day. Today I will be sharing Chloe's story about living with domestic abuse within the family home and the impact it can have on later life. You often find that people who have lived through domestic abuse as a child will seem a lot more grown up for their age, because of how quickly they have been exposed to a different kind of life. We talk about how we got over these traumas and how to focus our energy into things that bring us joy. Chloe will be competing in the Royal Miss International finals next year when we can safely fly to America and I can not wait to see her represent Scotland and bring that sass, who is looking forward to the national wear?! I think it is really important to tell our new partners about our past relationships, so we don't repeat the past but also they acknowledge that there might be a reason why we act a certain way with confrontation or avoid certain things. Being honest can help you heal and thrive in a beautiful relationship like Sheri here! Sheri will be competing at the Miss Atlantic Beauty Pageant finals next April representing Wiltshire and we are super excited to cheer her on! White Ribbon Day is the international day for the eradication of violence against women, and people everywhere are speaking up. Australian singer-songwriter Carus Thompson, inspired by current issues, has tackled this topic in his new single Ship To Come In. Carus spoke with Breakfast’s Tom Mann and Zoe Kounadis ahead of his show at The Wheaty this Friday (November 15) to talk about his single and his latest album Shakespeare Avenue. Produced by Tom Mann.Support the show.
Each week, at least one woman is killed at the hands of a man who was supposed to love her. Because the thing about domestic violence, is that it doesn’t discriminate. It doesn’t matter what colour your skin is, what you do for a job, or where you live. It’s all around us, and it happens every day. Gold Coast business woman Nicolle Edwards was going about her everyday life when she heard of a woman who had arrived into her community with three little kids and nothing else except the clothes on her back. She was fleeing domestic violence. And she had nowhere to go. So she decided to do something. And that something has turned into a community-based charity called RizeUp, to help victims of domestic violence. So far she’s helped 574 families, and she’s not done yet... In this episode of the Single Mother Survival Guide Podcast, Julia chats with single mum Angela Hadchiti. The 25th of November was White Ribbon Day - the International day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. The message is loud and clear - stand up, speak out, and act! And that is exactly what this week's guest, Angela, has done and continues to do. She is a domestic violence survivor, and thriver. Her story is one of horror, and one that no one should have to go through. Angela endured 19 years of physical, emotional, sexual and financial abuse from her husband. Five Apprehended Violence Orders were taken out on her husband throughout her marriage. Her husband abused her so badly that Angela received multiple injuries (including a broken neck) which led to hospitalisation. Angela received death threats, and her children were even told in graphic detail how he planned to carry that out. Angela was one of the "lucky" ones. She didn't die. She is here to tell her story. And despite the horror and unimaginable events that she and her three daughters had to endure, Angela has come out stronger than she has ever been. Furthermore, she has used her experience to help other victims of domestic violence. One of the hardest things she and her eldest daughter had to do (due to a major loophole that existed) was to go to Court and be subject to cross examination by the alleged perpetrator who was representing himself. This led Angela to wanting change. She didn't want anyone else to have to go through what her daughter and herself had to go through. And so a petition begun. Angela has had almost 20,000 people sign the petition which helped bring the matter to the surface. Steps have since been made to make changes to the legislation - The Family Law Amendment (Family Violence and Cross‑examination of Parties) Bill 2017 - which would see a court-appointed representative ask questions on behalf of the alleged perpetrator. Angela is one strong, brave, and incredibly remarkable woman. This is her story. Links mentioned in the episode: Angela has previously contributed her story to the Single Mother Survival Guide Blog. You can read that story here. Sign Angela's petition to help change the legislation here. Connect with Angela, and visit the Unheard Voice Facebook page here. December 6th in Canada is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. It is also known as White Ribbon Day. The National Day of Remembrance and Action was established in 1991 by the Parliament of Canada to mark the anniversary of the 1989 murders of 14 young women at l'École Polytechnique de Montréal. The victims in the shooting were killed by one man who called them feminists before he shot them. This year on December 6, an event called Speaking Up was held in Toronto. Toronto City Councillor Mike Layton spoke about his work organizing against gender-based violence, in particular with the White Ribbon Campaign an organization which aims to prevent men's violence against women. Also presenting at the event was Deb Singh. Singh is a survivor and an activist. She's a counsellor with the Toronto Rape Crisis Centre: Multicultural Women Against Rape.
