John Setka (born September 1964) is an Australian trade unionist. He is secretary of the Victorian-Tasmanian division of the Construction, Forestry, Maritime, and Energy Union which also administers the South Australian division under a temporary arrangement. He is a controversial figure in the Australian trade union movement. He is known for his strong support at a grassroots level, especially among the rank and file of the CFMMEU. His supporters regard him as a strong advocate against political, legal, and industrial opponents; the national secretary of the union, Christy Cain has called him one of the "most fair dinkum union people in this country". On the other hand, Setka's political opponents have derided him as a bully, and criticized his purported stance that it can be necessary to break the law to pursue union interests. He has also faced strong criticism for alleged public remarks on the topic of domestic violence, and a guilty plea for harassing his ex-wife via text, issues that contributed to his formal expulsion from the Australian Labor Party in 2019. In recent years Setka's personal life has been the subject of considerable media attention. His marital breakdown, and associated legal issues, have led to additional public criticism. John Setka was born to a Croatian family. His father was a labourer named Bob Setka, who survived the West Gate Bridge collapsein 1970, one of the worst industrial accidents caused by employer negligence in Victoria's history. Setka began working as a labourer at the age of 19. He began involvement with trade unionism first after joining the Builders Labourers Federation. He was mentored by state secretary John Cummins. Under John's leadership, media commentators have noted the "pervasive power of the CFMEU over construction companies". In 2012 he unsuccessfully attempted to sue the opposition leader Tony Abbott in defamation after Abbott called him a thug. In 2015, Setka encouraged workers within the Rail, Tram and Bus Union to strike during the Australian Football League finals to "use finals fever to their advantage in their bitter industrial fight with Metro Trains and Yarra Trams". The decision was criticised by Victorian Labor minister Jacinta Allan due to the strike's impact on businesses. Setka openly criticised the former prime minister Kevin Rudd in 2018. During a speech, he said: 'he's one of the worst fucking Labor PMs we've ever had ... (because) ... he kept the ABCC and coercive powers and he wants to talk about workers and the trade union movement.' Setka is known for his public condemnation of the ABCC and its staff. In 2017 he publicly threatened to target the home addresses of building watchdog inspectors and lobby local footy clubs so their "kids will be ashamed of who their parents are". These comments were controversial. On the other hand, he is regarded by many in the union movement, especially in the industrial left faction; to be a robust and genuine union activist. He has in the past had strong support from Luke Hilakari, among other prominent leaders in the trade union movement. In August 2022 a unanimous ballot at the South Australian branch of the CFMMEU brought about a co-operative administration arrangement between that branch, and the Victorian-Tasmanian division led by Setka. In 2015 Setka was arrested and forced to appear in court to face blackmail charges. On the day of his court appearance, around 2,000 CFMEU members and other unionists gathered outside the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on 8 December to show their support. Three years later, the Victorian prosecution office dropped the charges, a decision that the Magistrate Charles Rozecwajg described in court as 'very sensible. Setka spoke outside of court saying that he had been the victim of a witch hunt. He later sued a group of executives from the company Boral, successfully obtaining a settlement after alleging they conspired in the tort of malicious prosecution. Expulsion from Labor In June 2019 John attended a meeting of his union's national executive. It was reported by The Age that during that meeting, he made comments to the effect that the work of Rosie Batty had left men with fewer rights. Setka publicly denied that he made the comments. Following the reporting of these comments, the Australian Labor Party leader Anthony Albanese proposed to expel Setka from the Labor Party. John publicly objected to this attempt at expulsion and claimed that there was "dirty politics at work". He made an implicit claim that he was the victim of a witch hunt, driven by his "view of where the union should be in regard to the ALP, and some people probably don't share that view". Reactions to John's behavior and his potential expulsion were mixed. The CFMEU Victoria branch (that he controlled) threatened to cut financial support to the ALP if he was expelled. The NSW and WA branches also expressed their support. Numerous politicians, as well as the ACTU secretary Sally McManus called on John to step down. Additional pressure upon John arose after the Senate crossbencher Jacqui Lambie threatened political blackmail, making a demand that he steps down or she would vote for a bill strongly opposed by the union movement. This threat was made during a lunch invitation at her Tasmanian house. In the midst of these events, John pleaded guilty to using a carriage service to harass a person in the Melbourne magistrate's court. The victim was identified as his wife at the time, Emma Walters. Following this, more than a dozen individual unions, including the three biggest in the country, renewed their calls for Setka to step aside. Some factional allies of Setka, like the then head of the RTBU Luba Grigorovitch , maintained their support. In July, John applied for an injunction at the Victorian Supreme Court to stop the expulsion decision. He argued at court that the ALP national executive didn't have the legal power to expel him, and that it was instead a matter for the Victorian State party branch. The court decided in August 2019 that the motion to expel Mr. Setka was 'outside the court's jurisdiction', and that it 'could not interfere with internal decisions of voluntary unincorporated associations'. In October he commenced an appeal of this decision, before withdrawing. After its withdrawal, the ALP immediately expelled him.

On this episode we tackle several topics we have missed while being away! Including the PWC debacle, Victorian State Budget and the issues facing the construction industry.
In their latest budget, the Victorian State government announced a series of measures that will cost the average investor an extra $1,300 per year… At a time, when interest rates are at the highest they have been in for over a decade… At a time, when rental returns in Victoria are amongst the lowest in the country. That's why I'm doubling down on my statement that Melbourne is the worst property market for most investors. And it's not because property prices won't rise. They will! There just aren't enough properties for people who want to live there. So the fact that demand is higher than supply will drive property prices higher. But what's the point of buying an investment property that rises in value, only for it to bleed you dry in the process? What's the point of buying an investment property that rises in value, but hurts your ability to build a property portfolio? For those of you who have read my book, Wake Up Wealthier, you'll know I say that Capital Growth is the destination, but cash flow is the journey. If you cash flow dries up, there goes your dreams of financial freedom. And the Victorian State government's latest budget will definitely eat into your cash flow. I explain everything in this episode. Here's a snapshot of what you'll discover… How the Victorian state government plans to legally siphon $4.7 Billion from average mum and dad property investors EXPOSED! The secret cover up! What the Victorian State government failed to reveal in their 2023 budget announcements … and why it actually makes things worse for property investors. Proof that property investors are not welcome in Victoria. Why politicians will continue to drain our cash flow to line their coffers Plus so much more… --- Looking for a blueprint on how to build passive income through property? Then get a copy of my book free (both the digital and audio versions) here

Our great coach on This episodes is Peter Giles. Peter is currently the Australian under 19 Head Coach. A role he has had since 2011. He started playing baseball in 1969, finished in 1994; and began coaching in 1995. He won a championship in 1998 with Sandringham; and then led Essendon in the Victorian State league to 6 successive championships from 2011 to 2018. He has also coached the Australian U17 Baseball Team in 2015 was voted baseball Victoria Coach of the year. In 2020 he launched the Academy of Baseball Excellence that he now heads up. Peter is coach with a heightened focus on leading his club, not just the team of players who suit up each week. He is comfortable in his leadership philosophy in the way that only coaches with a long history of success and failure can be; and believes that his role is to be as fair as possible to everyone. His background in teaching enables him to communicate in way that engenders both belief and motivation and this translates into a mantra of asking his players to know their role and do it to the best of your ability, which you actually also hear him say in the opening theme for this podcast. This discussion with Peter is a masterclass in the art of coaching, it was actually one of the first interviews we did when we started this podcast, and his ideas have shaped many of the questions we have gone on to ask other Great Coaches. Some of those ideas include: The importance of not being afraid of bringing in support staff who are more knowledgeable or better than you in certain areas. His advice on building culture by firstly have shared belief across the coaching group in the game plan, then ensuring that every member of the team, either playing or in a supporting role, feels valued, and then thirdly connecting the teams mission to something bigger than the present team or season. Where culture is driven by the coach it is not sustainable, instead It must be led by the senior group of players in the team, and the example he gives of the All Blacks and Richmond Football Club to illustrate this. And his view that the role of the coach is to ensure that the players have a good work life balance so that they don't burn out or have their motivation diminished. I am very excited to share this interview with you and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. If you would like to send us any feedback or if you know a great coach, who has a unique story to share, then we would love to hear from you, please contact us at thegreatcoachespodcast@gmail.com You can also follow us and comment on all our Great Coaches here Twitter @CoachesGreat Facebook @TheGreatCoaches Instagram @the_great_coaches_podcast YouTube The Great Coaches Podcast LinkedIn The Great Coaches Podcast

As head coach of the Caulfield Grammar athletic program, Kim discusses both the barriers and opportunities that present when working within the school system and broader athletic community, an area of expertise Kim hopes will assist Athletics Victoria to develop sustainable strategies as we emerge from the COVID period. In a candid discussion of her own athletic career, Kim reveals for the first time the story of her PB Discus performance in the US and the question mark that this throw still has surrounding it. In the second of our series focusing on the many and varied clubs that make up our state association, Bryan Cake from the Traralgon Harriers provides a wonderful insight into the club and the characters that have played an important role in the LaTrobe Valley and greater Gippsland region for many decades. With a wonderful history of community involvement and early recognition of the 'recreational running' boom, the Traralgon Harriers in the traditional black uniform have been a mainstay of our XCR competition, whilst still providing track and field and recreational opportunities for their members. With weekend one of the Victorian Track & Field Championships completed, there’s plenty to talk about in Episode 34 of Down the Track. Fresh off her Under 20 400m win in the Vic Champs, and a recent 100m PB of 11.70, Mia Gross joins Sean and Tim to discuss her performance and review other standout performances from the first weekend. We get to hear from Dalton Di Medio, Emma Werner and Jake Penny who all took home Victorian State titles, a first for Dalton and Emma. The breaking news last Friday was Eleanor Patterson breaking the Australian High Jump record at the Capital Classic in Wellington, with a clearance of 1.99m. After reaching 1.96m as a 17 year old, Eleanor’s foray back into top level jumping that has involved a number of critical changes behind the scenes, sees the 23 year old now in a position to challenge the best in the world. Already dubbed ‘Geelong’s finest’ by Sean, Mia then tells us her story that includes some amusing tales from the self confessed accident prone athlete who has faced numerous challenges in competition both home and abroad. Mia describes her support network, the special bond in her family and the support she has received from Joe Gulli and Jess Gulli-Nance that has enabled her continued involvement in the sport. Sean enlightens us on a low key meet in Canberra that saw both Peter Bol and Joseph Deng record 1:45’s, with Mason Cohen and Dylan Stenson not far behind with sub 1:47’s. For Stenson this was a new South Australian state record and first time under 1:47, after recording 18 sub 1:48’s in his career! Tasmanian junior sensation Sam Clifford also produced a top performance in his home state’s championships with a solo 14:05 in the 5000m. Continuing on the record breaking theme, Swede Armand Duplantis continues to extend his Pole Vault World Record run with am indoor clearance of 6.18m in Glasgow, another 1cm advancement on his own performance in Poland the week before. Meanwhile all distance running eyes were on the US Olympic Marathon trials in Atlanta where some expected and totally unexpected results occurred to shape the US team for Sapporo. Victoria’s own Amy Cashin recorded her first sub 9min 3000m track performance in the US, finishing just 1sec behind event winner Jess Hull in an Indoor meet in Boston. Sean then explains the science behind the varied dynamics of indoor tracks in the US, a must listen for anyone of the nerdier types fascinated by centrifugal force! And to round out the international news we talk Coronavirus and it’s potential impact on world sport. With weekend two of the Victorian Track & Field Championships upon us and all of our Specialist Groups in action the week after, there’s plenty to look forward to domestically as we head towards the Australian Championships later in the month. In 2016 he published 'Creating Opportunity: Postcodes of Hope', a blueprint for cultural, generational and systemic change delivering lifelong learning, economic development and jobs. This is the first event of Victorian Fabians' Spring Series for 2018, and will feature talks by Professor Barbara Norman and Frank McGuire MP, with a special introduction by Fabian Luminary and National Treasure Barry Jones. Our familiar urban and suburban areas are at the forefront of much of the economic, social and environmental change sweeping Australia. Challenges arise in an arc of suburbs around Melbourne and other major cities. They are the result of the closure of old industries and changes in employment. Furthermore, the rise of inequality between suburbs contributes to the challenges, where some may become waiting rooms of permanent unemployment and a marginalised existence, with little expectation of the better future that spurred on former generations. Challenges to planning are also waiting in the wings from the social and physical effects of climate change, whether from increased numbers of people harmed or displaced by drought and flood, or from the struggle to adapt our cities to new land-use, energy and transport imperatives, as food and energy are stretched and the natural environment put under even more pressure. How can we address these issues so that people can have confidence in the future of the communities in which they live?

My guest for Episode 57 of The Startup Playbook Podcast, is Rachael Neumann, the new Venture Partner and Head of Australia at 500 Startups. If you are connected to the startup ecosystem, I am sure you have read the accounts of the sexual harassment scandal sweeping the startup world over the last few months, thanks to some courageous women sharing their story and shining a light on this issue. These accounts led Uber's Founder and CEO Travis Kalancik to resign and one of the bigger pieces to come out recently was a New York Times article that named several influential VC's such as Chris Sacca from Lowercase Capital and Dave McClure from 500 Startups. Following subsequent revelations of sexual harassment by Dave against a 500 Startups entrepreneur, he has since resigned his post as general partner. All of this was against the backdrop of Dave McClure being in Melbourne just a few weeks ago to officially launch the 500 Startups Melbourne program which was part funded by the Victorian State government's $60M ecosystem development fund - LaunchVic. Caught in the middle of this firestorm was Rachael Neumann, the new Venture Partner and Head of 500 Startups in Australia who I had arranged a podcast interview with on the 29th of June, the day before the New York Times article was published As a result, this podcast is split into 2 parts; the first one covering Rachael's background as the former Head of Eventbrite in Australia where we talk about her experiences and insights into launching into new markets, the importance of having a mindset of abundance and why you shouldn't build with a focus on being acquired. The second part of the interview was recorded a few days ago over Skype, so please excuse the audio quality). In this part of the interview we cover what's happened since the New York Times article was published, how much was shared internally at 500 Startups before the revelations came out, the KPI's for the future program and Rachael and 500 Startups's plan and next steps in building a safer and more inclusive ecosystem. If you want to jump to part 2 of the interview, skip to the 47:51 mark.
