Let's be real: there's nothing atypical about “atypical anorexia.” In fact, it's one of the most common eating disorder presentations—and yet it's still misunderstood, misdiagnosed, and too often ignored. In this episode, I'm joined by Registered Dietitian and eating disorder specialist Emma Townsin (@food.life.freedom) to break down what atypical anorexia actually is, why the name is a problem, and how weight stigma keeps so many people from getting the care they deserve. We talk about what happens when restrictive eating shows up in people who don't fit the “textbook” thin ideal, how BMI gatekeeping plays out in treatment settings, and what needs to change in how we diagnose and support people across all body sizes. This one's for anyone who's ever been told they're “not sick enough”—and for every provider ready to challenge that harmful narrative. ABOUT EMMA TOWNSIN, RD Emma supports her clients to take the stress out of food. Emma's unique method focuses on reframing how you think about food, building connection with your body and feeling confident in your food choices. So, instead of food controlling you, food supports you to live the life you want. Combining her skills as a Registered Dietitian and Certified Intuitive Eating Counsellor, Emma supports people experiencing stressful eating such as binge eating or uncomfortable emotional eating and those who want to feel good around food after long term dieting. Have you struggled, even secretly, with food and suspected that you have an unhealthy relationship with food? Maybe you've wasted a lot of time, money and energy trying different diets and programs, then given up. In today's podcast, we remind you that you were born with a natural, instinctive relationship with food. This relationship was apparent as a young child when you knew you were hungry and when you were full. Our guest today, Dr. Michelle May struggled with her relationship with food and body image for nearly 25 years and saw many of her patients struggling with the same pattern. She finally realized that diets made her feel powerless as they gave food all the power. Today, over 20 years later, she can eat what she loves without deprivation or guilt and is passionate about sharing her findings to help others do the same. In this podcast we cover “mindful eating” and four main eating styles. Want to increase your metabolism? Or at least ensure it doesn't slow? Strength training increases the size and the density of your lean muscle mass. Muscle mass requires more energy than fat, so your energy expenditure or caloric burn goes up for every activity – even sleep. Exercising of course burns more calories while you're doing it – but that's a small part of the benefit of exercise The influence of exercise on your energy expenditure AFTER exercise is next: called the “after burn” or excess post oxygen consumption, this increase in energy needed occurs when your body repairs muscle and tissue damage from exercise, and restores your circulatory and respiratory systems from the work of exercise… Its like the interest paid on a loan. Depending on the exercise that can be higher or lower and last for a few hours or day Long term – the increase of lean muscle in turn promotes the reduction of fat tissue so over time it is the last two that are the most impactful on metabolism and body composition: What you burn all day matters MORE than what you do during a 45–60-minute exercise session A change in body composition that increases muscle and decreases fat ultimately means more energy expenditure… and more energy to spend. Why Diets Don't Work… And then let's talk about the elephant in the room. They do. Oh, they do, right? For a period of time. But the roller-coaster ride that nearly every woman has been on at least once in her life, is that a diet will work.. until it doesn't. When you eat less. You tell your body to burn less. It does. You become more tired. Your body is trying to conserve energy. It will tell you more often you're tired, you'll lose your motivation*, you'll become more hungry more often and when you do eat, you won't eat normal portions potentially. *A lack of motivation is something that many women in our community ask about. Why they have it, what to do with it, how to stay motivated. There are biological things going on… fewer receptor sites for neurotransmitters like the “feel good” hormones that used to come from exercise. You've heard me talk about c60 and I'll link to podcasts about it We've forgotten these basic parts of exercise. Even trainers are not focused on them. Often caught up in trying to trump each other with creative and innovative workouts, they've forgotten principles of solid science. Weight lifting with basic movements done enough times to fatigue, repeated at minimum 2 sets, and given adequate recovery between… will allow muscle to respond positively. And in other good news… When You Lift, You'll Need to Eat to Gain Muscle So, say goodbye to diets. To gain muscle which will help you burn more energy all day, you need to have a surplus of calories. You can't starve and even fast, avoiding food for hours a day and not do damage to your thyroid, or your muscle. Refeeding after a fast is crucial to your success of metabolism-boosting muscle as well as bone density. Exercise during a fed state for many women midlife and beyond (as well as younger female athletes) is crucial to optimal health. We've become a society obsessed by fat burning and low fat and thinness. When it happens because of selfcare that's nature. When you try to attain it by starving, playing games, avoiding food most of the time and bingeing others, rarely will you find a healthy body composition. You're not forced to fast or even diet like a body builder (and fasting to lose weight can backfire on thyroid and metabolism if it's done incorrectly). You can avoid soreness from lack of repair of tissue when you focus on total body strength training. Hint: for virgin lifters, you have the most to gain so changes in strength and muscle mass will come even if you have a slight caloric deficit. If you've been lifting for say two years, you will need to eat, and eat well. It's not too late.. but almost! Strength train with STRONGER. Setting a big goal has nothing to do with losing weight. Our guest today Camille Marin Martin is a registered dietitian, public health writer, and former chronic dieter dedicated to helping women quit dieting, set bigger and better goals, reclaim their excitement for life — and lose weight in the process. She spent nearly 25 years of her life on a diet, and she's passionate about showing women how to break free from the downward dieting spiral of failure and improve their relationship with food, change their destructive habits and negative thought patterns, and lose weight without dieting. She also wants to show women how setting and achieving a big goal that has nothing to do with losing weight is what will help you lose it – because the confident, inspired person you become while working toward it naturally adopts the thoughts and habits consistent with health. In this episode, we will be unpacking Alexis's Diet Free Revolution. We talk about incorporating mindfulness (insert eyeball if you feel like it, we'll talk directly to you soon) and compassion and why they are so important. We'll talk about some major problems with diet culture, society's obsession with wellness and thinness, and how you can break free from the ridiculous standards. Alexis Conason, PsyD, CEDS-S, is a clinical psychologist and certified eating disorder specialist in private practice in New York City. She is the owner of Conason Psychological Services, a Health At Every Size ®-informed group therapy practice specializing in the treatment of binge eating disorder, disordered eating, and body image. Talks about her book and how she wrote Why don't diets work? Research that backs up the idea on why diets don't work Our bodies go into crisis mode when we try to restrict ourselves Diets are the way to get healthy, and sometimes it's hard to shift gears 7:03-11:40 If Diets Don't Work, How Do You Get Healthy? Start disentangle weight from health Internalized weight bias can add increased risk for metabolic syndrome We can impact our health by making changes that are entirely independent of losing weight and dieting When we think of health, we often narrow it to diet, exercise, and losing weight which is entirely false because health goes beyond that Health includes physical, emotional and mental well-being Some healthy steps that work that are not related to weight loss 11:41- 22:10 What Determines Our Health? Factors in determining our health Why do genetics and wealth impact our health? How could mindfulness help have a healthier lifestyle? Mindfulness can sometimes happen in the context of chaos, and that's okay Meditation practice is linked to mindfulness What is Hunger-Fullness physiologically, and how do we respond to it to better our relationship with food? 22:11- 36:41 Communicating and Listening to Our Bodies Through Food Why do we feel disconnected from our bodies? We can use mindfulness to tune in with our bodies more The use of hunger and fullness scale to connect more to your body Your body has cues for some reason The trends in nutrition change overtime Tuning in to our body is more reliable Enjoying your food and connecting to it in a more profound way Emotional eating isn't necessarily a bad thing Food isn't a one size fit solution for our emotional needs Recognizing our emotions instead of using food as a coping mechanism 36:42-42:50 Body Positivity and Body Acceptance Judgment vs. Observation Acceptance is a core piece of mindfulness Accepting our body and recognizing how messed up the world around us is, and changing the systems of weight biased Body positivity is an outgrowth of the body acceptance movement Our body is an instrument, not an ornament 42:51-43:49 Outro Connect with Dr. Conason Resources Mentioned: The Diet-Free Revolution: 10 Steps to Free Yourself from the Diet Cycle with Mindful Eating and Radical Self-AcceptanceBook by Alexis Conason, Psy.D. Imagine… Eating the foods that you enjoy—with no guilt. Eating until you feel full and satisfied—and ending your meal. Having those cookies that you usually can't stop eating sitting right on your kitchen counter—and being able to walk right on by. Not being able to remember the last time you ate in response to your emotions--it's been that long. Accepting your body for what it is right here, right now. You may be shaking your head and think, "Yeah right Kim! Whatever! There's no way I can do any of those things!" But you can. You absolutely can. You can feel completely calm around food. You can eat the foods that you enjoy without feeling guilty. You can move past hating your body. You can learn to eat when you're hungry and stop when you're full. You can learn how to cope with your emotions and your stress level without using food. You can do all of that (and more!) with an approach to food called Intuitive Eating. Intuitive Eating (IE) is an approach to food that was created by two dietitians back in the 1990s. It includes 10 principles that fall into one of four categories or goals of the model: Tuning into your body Developing body respect Breaking free from diet culture Making peace with food The 10 principles of IE hit on every aspect of changing your relationship with food and your body. Which is why it's one of the keys that you need to change your relationship with food! And we're starting our discussion of it today! In this episode, I'm discussing what IE is, what the goals and the Ten Principles are, and how IE helps with emotional eating (because yes, it does!). Today's episode is brought you by my FREE E-Course, Why Diets Don't Work and How to Quit Them for Good. Head here to grab it! I don't like treating weight loss. As a naturopathic doctor, my principles are to treat the root cause of disease, do no harm, and work with the healing power of nature. Most patients who want to lose weight expect to be put on a calorie-restricted diet and, frustratingly, calorie-restricted diets don't work. Most people enter a cycle of calorie (or carb, or meal) restriction, find the diet gets harder, they inevitably fall off the wagon, and "cheat", and then gain the weight back and more. This is why 95% of people who go on a diet, gain everything back and more in the subsequent 1 to 5 years. A yet even modern medicine conspires to recommend weight loss to patients with pre-diabetes, or diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and hormonal conditions like PCOS. But, in the words of Linda Bacon from her Scientific American article "Fat is Not a Problem", "Telling people they need to lose weight is a lot like telling someone with a cold to stop sneezing so much—it may not be possible and won't make the cold go away." The problem is that, in order to lose weight, we need to get healthy---metabolically healthy. And now, because of diet culture, we often have to break through walls of stigma, shame, yo-yo dieting, poor relationships with food, and body image, in order to get to the core of metabolic healing, which works very differently from traditional weight loss methods, and may not result in immediate weight loss, or any weight loss at all, despite being beneficial to your body as a whole. So, I created a course called You Weight Less on the Moon, on my site The Good Mood Project (check the link in bio to join for just $34). This episode of the Good Mood Podcast gives you a sneak peak in to the first chapter, called "Why Diets Don't Work", as well as my story with body image, food, and dieting---it should be an interesting listen if you're at all interested in dismantling diet culture, and restoring metabolic health through root cause, guilt and shame-free medicine that honours your body's wisdom and hunger cues. About the course: The course contains 11 Chapters and 38 lessons, with mini videos, journalling prompts, and audio meditations and visualizations. It even contains a 40-minute yoga flow. We talk about body image, diet culture, and weight stigma Metabolism, set point weight, reverse dieting, and stress' impact on the metabolism Hormonal causes of metabolic dysfunction: cortisol, insulin, leptin, the thyroid hormones, and the sex hormones. Relationship with food: Intuitive and Mindful Eating. Body Image: self-compassion, body neutrality, and Polyvagal Theory The digestive system and lymphatic system Gentle nutrition, such as reducing inflammation and satiety building And embodied lifestyle practices for helping us develop more interoception to start improving our attention and attunement to the body's cues. This month, the podcast will hit our three year anniversary. And for THREE YEARS now share my adoration for intuitive eating...and it all started from a realization years ago, that diets don’t work. I saw it in my personal life after a 10 year battle of on and off again diets and developing orthorexia as a result. I saw it in my clients. In my friends and family members and co-workers. I saw it in the research, too. And a shift as a wave of dietitians decided to so loudly claim that diets don’t work that a large sector of the RD population now, myself included, call ourselves non-diet or anti-diet dietitians to dissociate ourselves from dieting. Why? Because...Diets don’t work. And I want to dive into this deeper with you, which is why I’m hosting my next free workshop, called Why Diets Don’t Work (and What to Do Instead). And yes...your clean eating regimen counts as a diet and you’ll learn why that is in the workshop. This workshop is for you IF: You’ve been on and off diets, clean eating plans and you’re starting to question if your habits are truly healthy You’re heard me share about intuitive eating, but you’re confused about how to apply Intuitive Eating to your life You're frustrated that when you’ve previously tried to give yourself unconditional permission you ate everything in sight Or maybe you’re embarrassed that everytime you try to give yourself unconditional permission you end up spiraling even deeper into another diet or restrictive eating because the lack of control scares you deeply You’re fed up with the hamster wheel of always dieting and losing weight and you are overrrr it and trying to figure out next steps to take You’re inundated with all health and wellness information, you want to learn to trust your body and be your own guru. What does it mean to “listen to your body” You know every fact there is to know about all nutrition, health and wellness, so much so that it’s hard now to listen to your body The workshop will cover the science of why diets don’t work, what to do instead and understanding what exactly intuitive eating is (and is not). I’ll help you understand the physical and mental health benefits of intuitive eating and why it builds sustainable, long term health habits that stick. Because i know you want to know, if you are going to stop dieting- you need to know what you’ll be doing instead. Plus, I’ll review with you the 4 P’s of the permission stage of intuitive eating. That way you can from food obsession to food flexibility. So you can make peace with not only food, but with your body and finally stop micromanaging it. That way you can learn to practice wellness without obsession. And so that this year, even amongst the craziness that is 2020, you reach your goals and become an intuitive eater. Once and for all. Because one of the many amazing things about intuitive eating? You’ll never have to diet again. How cool is that? And, if you are interested in joining my online course, Permission Stage Playbook, you’ll see if you’re a good fit for the program &I’ll be sharing a special offer only workshop attendees will receive. I’m hosting three available workshop times: Wednesday August 12th at 11am EST Thursday August 13th at 6:30pm EST Saturday August 15th at 10am EST CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR THE WHY DIETS DON'T WORK WORKSHOP! Looking forward to meeting you in the workshop next week!
Why don’t diets work? Every one of them claims they are the answer to our weight loss problems, and basically every one of them fails to produce lasting results. Today, I’m going to dive into the five biggest reasons why diets don’t work and give you a few options for what you should focus on instead. The post 25. Today's show might seem like a slight deviation from my usual focus on creating a compassionate vegan world however it's an important topic that's close to my heart. Let's start 2020 with a F*ck It Diet 101. A Primer. (Again!) My instagram grew by 100,000 followers in 2019. That's an average of 273 new people a day. Big picture, that's fantastic and super exciting. But day to day, it means new people are seeing random, one-line posts that speak to one tiny piece of this whole puzzle, and they are intrigued, but more: they're confused. And instead of saying: ok let me check out this woman's site, podcast, or better yet, book, they ask for me to explain The F*ck It Diet to them, right there, in the comments or direct message. The hardest part is that there is no short answer. It's complicated. It's nuanced. There is a lot to explain!!! Also, when I am writing things for social media I have to make a choice: Am I posting on social media for newbies? Or for people who've read the book and already get it? That's a pretty wide divide, but I kind of have to do both. So if you're new, and confused, a great way to get a basic primer on TFID, is to sign up for the "Free Fun Stuff" right here! I send the beginning of the book, and three free primer lessons. Another really great way to understand WTF The F*ck It Diet is and why I think what I think, and how to actually do it, is to read the book. But also, here is another primer on WHY DIETS DON'T WORK: Our bodies are wired to push us off any diet or restriction - and, even though we tend to think this is a horrible thing, or something we need to overcome and conquer, it's actually a good thing. Our resistance to dieting is a biological advantage for famine survival. But that inherent protection against dieting is why dieting is so hard, and leaves us so obsessed with food. And why we get so hungry. It’s why we can’t stop thinking about food. It's why we binge. And why we almost always gain the weight back. We are wired that way. So, what counts as restriction? Calorie restriction, macronutrient restriction (like keto), time restriction (like intermittent fasting), any over thinking or micromanaging of eating amounts or times or purity, over-exercising, over-thinking and over-worrying about hunger and fullness (yes!), and any intentional weight loss. Dieting causes food addiction. Well... sort of. This is nuanced. And semantics. Food addiction is both real and ... not very real at all. It's not an addiction in the true sense of the word. But we definitely feel addicted when we are restricted in any way. Even just mentally restricted (more on that soon). It's that same protection against famines I just mentioned. Dieting makes us fixated on food. Chemically. In our brain and in our body.) Dieting and restricting make us feel (and act) addicted to food (and carbs). It feels VERY REAL, but it is just the state we are in when the body is screaming indiscriminately for food. (“PLEASE DON’T LET US DIE THIS WAYYYYY".) Our culture has a disordered relationship to weight. Which gives us a very disordered relationship to food. Our culture is extremely and insidiously fatphobic. What's fatphobia? For our purposes here, compare it to homophobia. A very cultural fear and judgment of certain people. We make assumptions about people. We believe the stereotypes. Not only is this messed up, but it messes up all of our eating - wide scale. Insidiously. Subconsciously. We have to unlearn all the things we’ve learned about weight, especially as it relates to health. Our relationship to weight is f*cked up, and based on faulty information. Weight is not a direct result of our habits. And you cannot tell someone’s habits or health from looking at them. That widespread belief is simplistic and causes a lot of harm, cruelty, and mistreatment. Our own healthy weight range is very genetic, and can only be manipulated so much, without consequences. This requires more than an instagram post or a blog post to unpack. I recommend lots of further reading on this. Read my book. Research weight stigma.

Why Diets Don’t Work Smart women don’t diet... they do THIS instead. After 27 years of dieting, I’m clear on one thing… diets don’t work. 91% of all women are unhappy about their body and resort to dieting. We think that a “thin” body is going to unlock our happiness, our acceptance, our joy. And 95% of all dieters regain their all weight within 1-5 years. Yet we keep dieting. We keep hating our body. We keep judging ourselves for our inability to be in freaking control… yet neuroscience is clear: WILLPOWER is a limited resource. "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results."- Albert Einstein The question is… are you? After making peace with food and my body by going beyond the food as a nutritionist and looking at what was really driving our desire to eat and judge our body, today, I help women do one thing: Transform your relationship to food and body so you can…. *FEEL BETTER about YOUR body as it is today without having to lose anything. *BE HEALTHIER in your body and mind as you make aligned choices. *Finally no longer being controlled by food instead, having the power to say yes or no. *Being able to release the emotional blocks that keep you stuck. *Be at peace with your body, eating and most importantly, yourself so you can be happy NOW… not conditional to losing something. If you’re not sure if you need more peace around food or your body OR if you are the right fit for the food freedom challenge, I have the perfect thing for you… Get Your Food Freedom Score Today, we are going to find out how you fare on the scale of food freedom (10 questions only). Are you “normal eater” and have no emotional attachment or control issue with food? Or are you a woman that is being controlled by food? … And worst-case scenario, you’ll spend 90 seconds seeing what could be possible for you that maybe you aren’t ready for in your life or maybe you’ll have a realization that what you thought was a healthy relationship to food isn’t? Who knows what will be the outcome of this 90 secs assessment score?!?! Get Your Food Freedom Score In this episode I discuss The real reason why smart women don't diet Why I don't talk about weight loss and my programs are not designed Why your intention is key in changing the way you eat The truth about why diets don't work Last episode, I talked about the "All or Nothing Mindset" trap. This absolutist thinking is one of the most common denominators in our Going Beyond The Food community. It’s the source of many emotional eating loops, overeating weekends and restricted food binges. In fact, this all or nothing mindset is a negative thought process also known as cognitive distortion. Everything- from food to your views of yourself to professional life– is divided into black or white terms. Everything is either success or failure. So, this episode focused on defining this mindset and providing you with a step-by-step solution to the "black or white" mentality. You don't wanna miss this episode. Click here.
