Dr. Kari Anderson has positioned herself as a respected clinician and leader in the field of eating disorders. Her career spans over three decades of leading treatment teams in all levels of care, Kari has developed several treatment models, most recently for the treatment of binge eating. Kari earned her Doctor of Behavioral Health with her research project, The Mindful Eating Cycle: Treatment for Binge Eating Disorder, at Arizona State University in 2012. Co-creator of the Am I Hungry?® Mindful Eating for Binge Eating Program, Kari also co-authored the acclaimed book Eat What You Love, Love What You Eat for Binge Eating: A Mindful Eating Program for Healing Your Relationship with Food and Your Body. Her memoir, Food, Body, and Love: but the Greatest of These Love, was released in 2021. This work digs deeper into the science behind effective treatment and includes research on food addiction and issues faced in obesity medicine. She is an adjunct faculty for the University of New Hampshire, and trains graduate students in treatment methods for eating disorders. As a licensed therapist in three states and certified eating disorder specialist and supervisor (CEDS-S), Kari maintains a private practice in Scottsdale, Arizona. — “In 2018, I watched a good portion of Hurricane Michael blow through Tallahassee from my front porch. As a lifelong Southerner, I've seen a few tropical storms and hurricanes, and find myself stuck between being in awe of the power of nature and wanting to give it a wide enough berth to show my respect. As I watched the trees in the storm, I noticed that they were doing more than just standing there. They were swaying, bending, and releasing. Even when we are rooted where we are, we can do the same thing. The storms of life can definitely push us around, but we don't have to just stand there. Like a tree, we all sway from side to side throughout our lives to allow for this event or that unexpected change of plans. I believe that these times actually make us stronger, more cognitively nimble, and more creative. Sway when you can so that the things you do to take care of yourself can keep happening even in a storm. Swaying might mean compromising on when exercise happens so that it can, rather than letting it stop altogether. As I watched the trees bend I thought about how they were pretty stubborn and must really be committed to being where they were to withstand so much pressure and not fall over. It reminded me of those times when life gets so hectic that if we want to stay healthy in spite of it, we need to make even bigger compromises. Those trees were swaying, and they were bending, but they were also releasing some of themselves in order to stay upright. This is a loss, for sure, but one that is regained over time. Don't be afraid to let some branches fall off your tree if it means you stay rooted in what supports your physical and emotional health. It's likely that those things will come back in time, and the loss will be a temporary one. I believe that our roots will go deeper, and we will be stronger. If another of life's storms is headed your way, be like a tree. Often you need a little acronym to remind you of a path to follow. Here are nine acronyms to help your mental health.  Over the years, I have collected a set of acronyms that have helped my mental health and those I have conversations with. These are acronyms that aid in recovery. They are like little guide posts to get you thinking. I am sure there are probably others, but here are my contributions. Mental Health Acronyms F.A.S.S. – No Fixing, Advising, Saving, or Setting one straight This comes from the work of Parker Palmer and focuses on the kind of relationship we need to offer others.In my conversations, I keep F.A.S.S. in the back of my mind as a kind of guiding light.I try not to fix, advise, save, or set the person straight. Instead, I ask gently curious questions. Now there are exceptions. Sometimes you need to give advice and even save if someone is seriously unwell, but these are the exceptions, not the rule.I want to ‘listen people' into wellness and help them discover their path to change. F.A.S.S. challenges our need to be in control and to soothe our anxieties.Read further here. Please. No Fixing, Advising, Saving, or Straightening Out P.L.O.M. – Poor Little Old Me I discovered this one from Brennan Manning. It's the unhealthy victim mentality.There are healthy and unhealthy victims.Healthy victimhood sees the pain of life and wants help to go through it. They take responsibility for their lives and don't constantly blame others.An unhealthy victim has a P.L.O.M. attitude and wallows in what has happened. There is no shift in focus. If you talk to them a year later, they will still have a  P.L.O.M. in their mouth. It's an attitude all of us can easily slip into, but for some, it becomes a home where they live everything out of. Self-pity can be seen as a season, a time which you are passing through, but if you always stay in the winter, something of spring will never emerge.Mental health comes when we accept responsibility for ourselves and do not perpetually be the victim.Read further here – 7 Steps to Help Those with P.L.O.M's (Poor Little Old Me) in the Mouth  S.H.A.M.E. – Should Have Already Mastered Everything. Do you make mistakes, or are you a mistake?S.H.A.M.E. helps me understand that I am discovering and learning. Have I mastered everything? Of course not. It's the ‘Should have's' that dig in deep into the soul. Either we say them to ourselves, or others say it to us.It recognizes the shame stones we pile up for ourselves. Read further here – What to Do With Shame Slingers H.A.L.T. – Hungry Angry Lonely Tired This acronym comes from the recovery movement and acts as a kind of warning system reminding you to pause (halt!) and take notice of what's going on for you that makes you want to go to the pain relief strategy, such as picking up a drink or a drug.The question to ask is, ‘Am I Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired, or Stressed?' Then, ask yourself further questions such as ‘What are the healthy options I can choose rather than the old destructive patterns my brain is offering me? Read further here. What Is HALT? The Dangers of Being Hungry, Angry, Lonely, or Tired   S.T.A.N. Plan – Simple, Timed, Aimed, Negotiated This is a little acronym that I discovered in the story of Daniel and the plan he created to get him out of a tough situation.I often use S.T.A.N. when helping someone create a plan of action.  When creating a plan of action, I like to ask these questions.Is the plan … Simple to understand by all involved. It's not complex, long, or difficult. Timed for review, not completion. Good plans have a time for a review to see how progress is going and if anything needs to change in the plan. Aimed at achieving something of deep importance. Sometimes the reason we don't achieve the plan is because the outcome simply doesn't matter that much to the heart. Negotiated with key others. Who is helping you achieve the outcomes of the plan? Have you discussed this with them?Read further here – Lessons Daniel Taught Me About Achieving Goals. Part 2 E+R=O – Event plus Response equals Outcome We all have events happen to us, but how we respond will determine the outcome.The key to a different outcome is to choose a different response. Learning new responses to the events happening around us can bring us new outcomes. Read further here How to Stand Firm when the Rotten Tomatoes are Thrown A.B.T. – And, But, Therefore.  This is an acronym I use in my writing, similar to E+R=O. It comes from the work of Randy Olson and his study of great speeches.And these things happened But this was the response Therefore this was the outcome. Read further here – The ABT Framework for Listening Well B.G.E.S.C. – Brief. Gentle. Early. Specific. Consequences. This comes from the work of David Riddell and relates to expressing yourself to someone else when you have been hurt. Brief. Make your reply short. Don't go on and on. Keep it short Gentle. Speak in a tone appropriate to the situation. We don't need to yell, and we don't need to be meek and whisper. Look at them and speak gently. Early. Give your reply as soon as possible. Don't leave it till later unless you need to prepare your response. You don't want this anger to go on and on. Paul writes,” Don't go to bed angry” Ephesians 4:26 Specific. Make sure your reply is specific to the issue. Don't go on to past hurts and problems. Deal only with the current issue. Consequences. A good reply points out the consequences of what has happened and will happen. It is important to state how you feel about what happened. “By you doing this, I felt very sad, etc.”. You may also need to point out what will happen if they do that again. ” I have decided that if you behave like that again, then I will….”Read further here – 16 Tips When There Is Socially Unacceptable Behavior In A Group Setting J.A.D.E. = F.O.G. – Justifying, Arguing, Defending, or Explaining = Fear, Obligation, Guilt This is one that I have only recently added to my toolbox of acronyms.J.A.D.E. is an Al-Anon 12-step slogan that reminds us not to engage in justifying, arguing, defending, and explaining. When you do this with unhealthy people often they will throw something back at you that will stimulate feelings of Fear, Obligation, and Guilt. F.O.G.Often the healthiest response is to give no response at all.Read further these articles. Dealing with Difficult Family Members: Dont Justify, Argue, Defend, or Explain Circular Arguments, Emotional Reasoning and JADE (Justify, Argue, Defend, Explain) The Narcissist-Codependent Trap: Having Boundaries Ends the Relationship More Thoughts on FOG, Hoovers and No Contact When Ending a Relationship with a Narcissist, Borderline, Histrionic and/or Sociopath Another one, as a bonus. T.T.A.Q. = Title, Theme, Affect, Questions This is a useful acronym to help us understand our dreams Title. Always give it a title. It is a short story or movie and deserves a title. The act of choosing a title offers insight into the meaning of your dream. Theme. What is it principally about? This is a short phrase that describes the topic. If it was a movie, would it be a thriller, a comedy, a romance? Ask God to help you identify the overall theme. Affect. What was the emotional affect expressed in it? What were the feelings felt by the principal character in the story or movie? Were there certain emotions expressed by others? What feelings did you experience when you awoke? Describe the emotional tone or impact of the dream. Questions. What questions does the story seem to be asking of you? The authors of this technique suggest you listen to the story as if it were a friend asking you a meaningful question. The act of formulating the question/s will give an interpretation. For example, you were told that certain foods are “bad,” and when you eat them, you are “bad” too. Instead of play, exercise became punishment for eating or for earning the right to eat. It's Thanksgiving week! And that means we're officially in a time of year that I like to call Eating Season. And here at Heather Solves Everything, all of my coaching calls this week have been about intuitive eating, and how to get through the holidays without losing control around food. So I decided to put together a special episode just about that, and to offer up five things to think about as you approach the Thanksgiving table. The point of these five tips is to help you turn down the urgency and turn up the trust during the holidays. I want you to enjoy the scents and flavors of the season with your arms and hearts open wide, not feeling like you can only enjoy them within a controlled setting, or that there are some foods that you can't have, or that you have to do some kind of penance for eating them. I hope that your Thanksgiving is full of blessings, including a feeling of partnership with yourself so you can relax, exhale, connect with your body, and make your first bite the best one. Intuitive eating is something that takes some time to learn and master, so don't expect yourself to flip a switch and undo a lifetime of learned food rituals and self talk. Babies are born with a natural, instinctive relationship with food. They eat when they are hungry, stop when they are full and don’t think about food until they are hungry again. Food is not a focus, it is simply fuel for their bodies.As we grow, we are inundated with tv, magazines, social media, etc., showing us the wonderful foods we could be eating and in the next moment, giving us unrealistic ideas of what we should look like and what we should or shouldn’t eat to achieve that. We worry about what we are eating, calories, exchanges, grams or points. We are using so much energy and time to attain an idealized version of what it means to eat healthy that we don’t have space left to enjoy life, which is the ultimate goal.Today I interview Dr. Michelle May. Michelle is a former family physician, recovered yo-yo dieter, and founder of the program, “Am I Hungry? Mindful Eating Programs and Training”. found at www.AmIHungry.com. She is the author of the Eat What You Love, Love What You Eat book series that teaches mindful eating to help individuals resolve mindless and emotional eating and senseless yo-yo dieting to live the vibrant lives they crave. You can download the first chapter at https://amihungry.com/chapter1. Mindful eating takes you back to the natural instinctive state you were born with, but it is not a one and done. It is a tool to use every day. Your understanding evolves as you use it.-Unconsciously incompetent: You didn’t know better-Consciously incompetent: You knew there was a lot you didn’t know but didn’t know what to do about it.As skills and tools are taught, you become: Consciously Competent: You can use the tools such as the hunger and fullness scale to help you decide whether you are hungry or not. You can then make conscious decisions according to where you fall on that scale. If you realize that you are not actually hungry, but you want to eat anyway, it is time to figure out what you really need and what else besides eating could meet that need. Eventually it becomes natural and instinctive like it was when you were a baby. Unconsciously Competent: You don’t have to think “Am I hungry?” You just know. Not everybody gets there. As you continue to practice you go back to your instinctive, natural relationship with food and only occasionally revert. When that happens, it is a signal that something is wrong, such as you need rest or have too much stress. You can go back to basics and take better care of yourself. - Weight is not a behavior. It is not subject to behavior modification. Mindfulness is not about weight or a number on a scale. It is about awareness and purpose. It is intention and attention. By bringing awareness to what you really want, and the choices you are making, you can make little choices every day that bring you closer to feeling more energetic, joyful and having a more balanced, vibrant life. If you were doing those things only to lose weight and you weren’t seeing a change on the scale you might quit. When you stop using the scale to see how you are progressing, you can tune in to how you are feeling. That’s what really matters. Hunger and fullness scale: On a scale of 1 to 10, rate your level of hunger and fullness. One is so famished you could eat a chair, 10 is so full you could pop. Five is neutral, not hungry and not full.This is a non-diet approach to help you recognize whether you are actually hungry and if so decide how hungry you are. This knowledge allows you to make your own decisions about what, when and how much to eat. When you feel like eating, pause and check in. What is your number? If it is less than 5, you get to make the decision about whether you are hungry enough for a snack or a full meal. If your number is a 5 or above it means the desire to eat came from somewhere else. Seeing food, seeing someone else eating it or feeling deprived of a certain food are big triggers for eating. It could also be an emotional trigger. If you recognize that you want to eat but aren’t hungry, you have a chance to figure out what you can do to take care of yourself. Two-bucket concept: One way to visualize mindful eating is to picture your body with 2 buckets. One holds all the food you give it throughout the day. The other bucket holds everything else you need, such as rest, fun, pleasure, comfort, companionship, connection and organization. When we think we are hungry we fill the first bucket. Many of those times we actually are hungry, and our body needed the fuel we gave it. But, other times, we are bored, upset, tired or emotional and we think we are hungry. So, we add to our food bucket, not realizing that we needed to add rest, or exercise or conversation rather than food. Our second bucket remains empty. We can end up the day with our food bucket overflowing and our other needs bucket very empty leaving us feeling full but unfulfilled. We are filling the wrong bucket. Michelle has stopped using the word health and uses well-being because we are entire beings. We need more than just nutrition and exercise. We also need emotional and spiritual nourishment. These are things that can’t be addressed by what we are eating. Mindful eating is a new way to think about food, a way to avoid deprivation and guilt. Diets are restrictive and unsustainable, leaving the dieter feeling guilty and disappointed. Michelle is on a mission to help people recognize and cope with their triggers for mindless and emotional overeating, to rediscover joy in physical activity, and learn how to effectively nourish our bodies, mind, heart, and spirit. The3rd pillar of the Pure Joy Method Can you believe it? Mindset is STILL the #1 way to change and SUCCEED!  This is the Pure Joy Method's 3rd pillar in our 3 pillar structure for our Lovecamp (4-Week Keto Gone Green Coaching Program) because if we can incorporate mindfulness practices, journaling, meditating, exercise, intermittent fasting we can begin to switch our mindset YOU ARE WORTHY and WORTH IT! IF we eat when we are stressed, digestion is not optimized, and we can't digest properly. So even when you are eating the cleanest diet, if you are under stress (not mindful) you won't be fully  healthy (this leads to nutrient deficiencies, raised cortisol, ages you quicker, gain weight around the belly. etc,)  Leaky gut - cortisol connection  Relationships change Changing your health requires patience and dedication in order to fully transform. This is not an overnight fix! There is no magic pill.  PRAYER/GRATITUDE practice before eating (drink it in with your eyes first.  STOP AND PAUSE for 1 minute before taking your first bite (a great time to take your digestive enzymes) EAT, BREATHE and CHEW ONLY...No tv, phones, magazines, etc. MEDITATION: How this practice can stay with you throughout the day. From the book Mindfulness by Mark Williams and Danny Penman: “Numerous psychological studies have shown that regular meditators are happier and more contented than average.' These are not just important results in themselves but have huge medical significance, as such positive emotions are linked to a longer and healthier life.2 • Anxiety, depression and irritability all decrease with regular sessions of meditation.3Memory also improves, reaction times become faster and mental and physical stamina increase.4 o Regular meditators enjoy better and more fulfilling relationships.' o Studies worldwide have found that meditation reduces the key indicators of chronic stress, including hypertension.' • Meditation has also been found to be effective in reducing the impact of serious conditions, such as chronic pain' and cancer,' and can even help to relieve drug and alcohol dependence. 9 Studies have now shown that meditation bolsters the immune system and thus helps to fight off colds, flu and other diseases” To practice…. We are going to do 1-minute together.Sit comfortably, focus on your breath in and out your nose, maybe roll your eyes towards the center-3rd eye, then just be silent and breathe… If thoughts come up, just notice them and go back to your breath (no judgment). SET TIMER NOW. When we finish… what do you notice? Do you want to go longer? Do you feel a tiny bit calmer? 2ND FOOD MEDITATION PRACTICE...The chocolate meditation….dark chocolate, you and nothing else…(Elaina explains) Books and Apps:  Books-Mindful, The 4 agreements, Mindfulness, 10% Happier by Sam Harris, nonviolent communication, Untethered Soul (Michael Singer), The Art of Living, Radical Acceptance (Tara Brach)  Apps: Insight timer, youtube, headspace COUNT to 30 OR WAIT for 10 minutes JOURNALING NOTICING AND REPLACING- practice noticing negative thoughts or words around your food choices or your body/looks. When we catch ourselves saying something unsavory, without judgment, just notice it, then replace that thought with something believable (might just be something as simple as I can have that later or my skin looks amazing)  EXERCISE AND MOVEMENT- could be cardio or as simple as stretching and feeling your body inside and also with your hands. BODY SCAN- How do I FEEL? My eyes, my lips, my cheeks, my head, my neck, my shoulders, all the way down to your toes. AM I HUNGRY? Ask yourself this question… If no, then what is this sensation and is there something other than food that I can replace it with? Talking to a friend, a walk, some pushups or lunges, a bath or sauna, a drive or errand???? Benefits of Mindful Eating Learn to eat when you're hungry, and stop when you're sated. Learn to really taste the food, and to enjoy the taste of healthy food. You slowly start to realize that unhealthy food isn't as tasty as you thought, nor does it make you feel good anymore. Lose weight effortlessly  if you're overweight. Begin to sort through the emotional issues you have around food and eating. This takes a bit longer, but it's important. Social overeating becomes less of a problem — you can eat mindfully while socializing, with practice, and not overeat, having an experience of getting filled up with social connections Begin to enjoy your eating experience more, and as a result, enjoy life more. A mindfulness ritual you can look forward to. One third of people who seek out weight loss treatment are actually struggling with binge eating disorder. Pursuing weight loss actually makes bingeing WORSE! Healing your relationship with food is messy, but it's a beautiful mess, and it's worth it. What exactly does "overweight" even mean?? I say over what! Weight gain around puberty is COMPLETELY normal! But unfortunately we often shame girls for this. When the world tells us small bodies are valued and larger bodies are unacceptable, it lays the groundwork for the binge eating experience. Getting help can be the first step to peeling away the shame associated with bingeing. What's the difference between a "healing" relationship with food vs a "healthy" one? A healing relationship with food helps us walk away from the perfectionism and the black and white thinking around food. Kari Anderson from Green Mountain at Fox Run joins to talk more about binge eating! Sometimes we use food to try to calm our anxiety... and that's okay! You don't need to feel ashamed about it. Be compassionate to yourself instead! Trusting yourself around food again is a huge step towards healing your relationship with food. Food can have a sense of freedom, rather than fear. It is SO important to validate the role and the function of food in our lives... look at it as a coping mechanism that DID serve you, until it didn't anymore. We may even have to grieve our previous relationship with food in order to move onto the next version. We live in a world where we demonize our food choices constantly!! Our culture doesn't help when someone is trying to heal their relationship with food. We have to jump off the diet train!! The restrictive mindset CREATES the weight "problem." We should never limit the choices in our lives because of our weight! You have a choice in your eating behaviors. Every woman wants to feel empowered in what we do and the way we live. Too often, we limit ourselves and stifle God's power within us by looking to the world to define who we are and whether or not we are "successful." The net result is that we never fully live out our calling or purpose. Dawn's message of living an empowered life helps us to shift our thinking and the way we define ourselves so that we can be free to live the life we were fashioned to live, with passion and purpose. Dawn Rutledge is a Certified Personal Trainer, Master Holy Yoga instructor, Certified Thai Yoga Massage provider, Pilates instructor, and licensed Am I Hungry? workshop facilitator. She owned and operated Curves Ahwatukee for nearly eight years where she helped empower more than 4,000 women to strengthen their bodies, manage their weight, and improve their overall health and wellness. Dawn's life was transformed in 2005 as a student of Holy Yoga when she discovered the power of integrating her faith and yoga practice. Soon after, she became a certified Holy Yoga instructor. God slowly revealed a plan for her to offer wellness and healing through faith-based wellness programs. These programs are woven together in a tapestry only God could provide that combines Dawn's faith, fitness background, weight management experience, and passion to help others achieve wellness. Dawn serves within the Christ Centered Yoga Ministry at Mountain Park Community Church and Redemption Church. She received the 2007 Palo Verde "Business Woman of the Year" award for her charity work and dedication to community service while she owned Curves Ahwatukee. She lives in Ahwatukee with her husband and four children.
